Had the cassis cake for my birthday - one of the best cakes I’ve ever eaten!!
My go to for all my cravings from Eclairs to Cream puffs to their delicate cakes. I love that they use real cream and nothing is overly sweet. The prosciutto sandwich is great and of course their cheese croissants.
Been there and it's very tasteful. Delicious pastry, friendly people, pure artisan bread ... super!
The best bakery in Calgary hands down. There baguettes to breakfast items can't be beat. Love the people and the service. Wish we lived closer.
Nice to see how local Canadians love our Belgian patisserie :)
I like THE taste of Your fresh bread
Flawless bread....the sourdough gorganzola is amazing. ....THANK GOODNESS FOR GLUTEN!
My family and I have been enjoying all the delicious treats and savoury specialties since 2001 and it remains a family favourite and tradition! Everything is outstanding! We hope they recover quickly from the flood of 2013! There are no substitutions so we suffer with them. The Gau family.
Still amazed that there are eateries in 2017 that scorn pictures, but finding just that as I casually snapped a photo of Manuel Latruwe’s pastry cases, it was after a brief moment browsing the shelves that the urge to leave was set aside, a good choice as the Belgian Patisserie’s Viennoiserie are some of the finest in Calgary.
Told that the warning was given due to the Chef’s policy of hiring a photographer to take promotional shots, but that I was welcome to take pictures of anything I purchased for ‘personal use,’ it was with a curtailed order of four items that I seated myself at a small table towards the back of the café, the four item spread clearly the work of someone with talent, a quick perusal of the website indicating that the Chef had enrolled in culinary school at age twelve and had thus been pursuing his craft for nearly four decades.
Now offering his confections in Calgary for over eighteen years, the season and region continuing to inspire innovation to this day, it was with a loud crack and shower of crumbs that a knife cut into an Croissant topped and filled with lightly sweetened ground-Almonds, not one drop of Frangipane to be found here or in the Apricot and Almond Danish that spoke volumes about the benefit of an early arrival as the layers were still crunchy and the filling still warm-to-touch.
Told that the Sour Cherry Turnover was a new item, the separation providing an almost a Cruller-like effect to the pastry itself, suffice it to say that those favoring tart over sweet would be well-advised to investigate this option further while traditionalist will be pleased to see a textbook Mille-feuille that would only be better if made a la minute.
I have been patronizing this business for more than a decade. Although the pastries are still terrific, of late the tortes have fallen off. The last two I ordered had gelatinous coatings that didn't stay firm even when refrigerated. When the cake was cut into slices, the coating was ugly and rubbery - not nice in the mouth. Not sure what this is - it wasn't on the cakes in the past. Disappointing.
Came here for lunch today with couple of coworkers. We were greeted by friendly staff that let us know that there was bench seating to accommodate out party of 6 (4 adults and 2 kids). They gave us menus to look over at our table before heading up to the counter to order. I got the small ham & gruyere quiche with salad and it was delicious! Perfect size for lunch. The dressing was a nice honey mustard vingarette which I really enjoyed. They have a variety of beautiful cakes, macarons and pastries along with many frozen taken home to bake items. I have bought and made the frozen cinnamon buns and ham and cheese croissant and they are amazing! Will definitely come back soon
This patisserie is located a couple blocks away from Victoria Stampede Station so it's got easy transit access, but it is a bit off on its own on 1 St SE. It's actually a pretty busy cafe so it's probably for the best it's not located in a high traffic area like 17th Ave. Their coffee is some of the best I've had in Calgary and their baked goods are delicious. I'm a big fan of the quiches, which come with an unusually yummy side salad. I get half to go and eat half there as their sizes are quite large. Definitely a cafe worth venturing to.
Giving this place 4.0 stars. Could be 5.0, The desserts at this place absolutely "wowed" me. I ordered a small mousse like cake with macarons decorating both the sides and the top. Delicious. I was so impressed by the look of the croissants, I had to have a couple of the almond ones. They did not disappoint.
This could have been a five star rating, but taking a star off for the "off" service. Coffee Barista was not customer oriented,, and when I asked to take home a menu, I was told that they were "short" of menus. That being said, I left the menu there. After spending almost $40, you would think that they could try to better accomodate a simple request.
Almost perfect! Very good tasting product, I think we tried every type of croissant... ^^
We had patisserie as well, very well made. If I have one remarks to say...decoration reminds me salon de thé in France 20 years ago.... ;)
When you visit Manuel Latruwe's you are swept away to another place & time. Prepare to treat your senses with the smell of sweet delights, fresh baking, rich chocolate, the sounds of families laughing with one another, and a visual smorgasbord of endless options. You find yourself searching for the one you want & the one to take home for later as the line moves steadily along. There are so many options & such elegant work, makes it a difficult choice. They have mastered a Romantic Patisserie.
The pastries that I've tried from here so far are really delicious. There are a wide selection of pastries, so I'm sure that anyone who comes in can find something they'll love. The thing I enjoyed the most here was the 'red apple macaron'.
Manuel Latruwe locate at the edge of downtown Calgary. This bakery offers french pastries like macarons and even belgium chocolates. They offer both sweet and savory macarons. I was skeptical of the savory macrons which included salmon+cheese flavour and also duck liver. But surprisingly, it was YUMMY!
Love almost everything here. .. best patisserie in town! The macarons are also crazy delicious as it doesn't just taste like sugar... their best is the red velvet and Paris brest! I have yet to try their breakfast and lunch menu as well as their tarts.
I love this place. Hands down one of the best bakeries in Calgary, and definitely the number one place to get croissants. If you want to ensure that you can get your hands on one of these delicious croissants, you can always call ahead of time and let them know you will come pick them up and how many you want. Sometimes we are lazy and we don't call in, and they are all gone before noon, and definitely all gone by the time afternoon rolls around.
It is a lovely little place to sit with someone for a coffee and some delicious baked goods. They also serve breakfast and quiche as well. I have to agree that this place is definitely on the pricey side, but for me, the quality is worth it.
Wish they were open a little longer and later, but that's just me :P
Finally made it here! I love French bakeries and this one also serves breakfast and lunch! Just off MacLeod trail, there is free 90 minute parking out front which is really nice.
DECOR: the restaurant was beautifully sunny with small clusters of tables. They also have a few tables outside. The main focus is of course, the baked goods which are amazing to look at.
FOOD: I resisted just eating the cakes and ordered the croque madame which was really good. The bread was soft and light and the cheese was melt and perfect. The poached egg was perfectly done. The accompanying potatoes were well seasoned and not too much to finish.
Of course I came home with some macarons!- will do another view when I eat those!

#fullpost{display:inline;} Growing up I never had much of a sweet tooth. If you asked me about whether I preferred candy or chips, I would almost always go for the latter. Ever since I met my husband however, his sweet tooth seems to have slowly transferred over to me. Now we don’t usually have a meal without something sweet at the end. It isn’t necessarily a bad thing since now we balance each other out. My husband never feels satisfied unless we start with something savoury so he ordered a Croque Madame and I had the Focaccia Baguette. I like that we can enjoy brunch dishes without having to fuss with the brunch crowds. His croque madame, which is made with toast, ham, a ton of melted gooey cheese and topped with a runny poached egg, was amazing melt in your mouth delicious. My baguette had slices of prosciutto, olives, roasted red peppers and bocconcini cheese served in their house made bread. I was surprised it wasn’t on a focaccia bun, but I guess that was just the name of the sandwich. I liked the taste combination but did the find the filling a bit sparse. However that is how it’s normally served in Europe where the bread is truly the star. There are actually several different types of waffles and the ones we’re used to eating is the American waffle, where the texture is similar to a pancake. Over in Belgium, the two most popular forms are the Brussels or Liege waffles made from yeast leavened batter. The waffles served at Manuel Latruwe are Brussels waffles. Made with a lighter batter compared to the liege version, they exhibit a larger rectangular form with deep square pockets, a crispy outer layer and are quite thin overall. I could easily eat 3 or 4 of these waffles because of how light they taste. They were perfect with a sprinkling of powdered sugar, or in my case, some sweetened strawberries with a side of whipped cream. Although we’re normally there for the waffles, we never leave without ordering additional goodies. You can’t go wrong with a Croi
Very much worth the high price tag.. I received a cake from ML for my birthday and I must say it is one of the best I have had. It reminded me of the patisseries and sweets shops in Paris and Belgium. Yum!
Very good bakery but also very expensive in my opinion. I bought 2 pieces of cakes plus a small bag of cookies for $24...
Easily some of the best pastries I've had including those I've had during my travels in France. Also probably the best classic European (Belgian) breakfast I've had in the city. All the breakfast dishes, sandwiches, pastries, and breads served here are consistently delicious. There is really nothing to complain about with Manuel Latrwue and you can taste the unmistakable passion he puts into all of his food. If you want a true Belgian food experience, visit this place. 10/10
Amazing.... This is a regular stop when we need special treats for the office. The quality and variety of pastries they have here is unmatched in the city.
Yummy. Great bread, great sweets.sometimes good coffee and service lots to learn....
Best croissant!. Easily the best croissant I have ever had. Even better than ones I had in Paris! I could smell them from blocks away and I decided to pop in before work... best decision ever.
Tess Goes to Manuel Latruwe for her Mother's Birthday.. I came here to get a cake for my mum's birthday, but once I saw all the precious little individual desserts I knew that would be just as special! They were all as delicious as they looked and so much fun to share! I will definitely come back here, maybe for my birthday!
A little piece of Europe in Calgary. This place has amazing food. I've been coming here since it was a hole in the wall, about 1/4 of the size it is today. Amazing bread, food, and quality. You definitely pay for the quality ingredients, but it's worth it.
TIP : You can call in your order in advance, as most baked goods sell out very quickly.
I think the mediocre customer service actually reminds me of being in France! I dig it. I find it a bit annoying how they just close without notifying anyone on their website or voicemail - but all in all, this place rocks.
Excellent. Love all the products
Oh man! Best brunch!. The bread! The eggs! The coffee! So delicious. I want to live there.
Eat the Ham and Cheese Croissant. If there is one thing you do before you die - eat their ham and cheese croissant. Five bucks, but worth every penny. It's a piece of heaven.
I enjoy their take and bake items like quiches, croissants chocolate pastries. They are elegant and always a hit with guests.
Don't forget the bread...... Latruwe's pastries are delicious and authentic - some of the best in Calgary. I must admit I'd rather see a wider variety, featuring more of the everday pastries you'd see in any patisserie in France, but I'm not really complaining.
However, for me, one of their very best things is their bread, which i think people often overlook. I really think they do the best wholewheat loaf in Calgary. Their specialty artisan breads are all wonderful too, but for a really great, tasty, darn near perfect wholewheat loaf to take home - a real staple in anyone's kitchen - Latruwe's version can't be beaten. I'll gladly pay double the price of a supermarket wholewheat loaf - it's worth every penny.
One word..... Quiche! Anyone who makes quiche that is requested to be transported half away around the world knows what they're doing. This mealt in your mouth selection of quiches is just the beginning...pastries, bread, coffee yummy!
Best in Canada. How can I tell you such a beautiful and artistic cakes.
Oh! Just perfect size and sweetness.
You should try their croissants. Best way to start my day is undoubtedly a cappuccino and fresh-baked croissant from Manuel Latruwe, possibly also picking up a baguette sandwich for lunch (the brie with house-made jalapeno spread makes my day every time). I haven't a croissant this light and flaky since I was in Paris. They also make a fantastic mushroom toast.
Happiness! When I visit from Winnipeg, visiting Manuel is a must!! I will be picking up frozen croissants to take home and bake. Quality, and overall a beautiful bistro.
Good soup and desserts. The sandwiches here are made with great baguettes and really yummy fillings. The desserts are also delicious. Should mention had two bowls of soup the other day and both were amazing- tomato with meatball and chicken with egg drop. Super Super Super Soup.
Fine Ingredients Excellent Food. I stopped in yesterday for lunch and ordered the croc monsieur and a freshly squeezed glass of orange juice.
Taking the first bite of the sandwich was one of those moments where you just pause and realize what you are eating at that point in time is something truly special.
The quality of the sandwich was excellent. It arrived on my plate crisp and done to perfection. This is how a croc monsieur should be. The orange juice was another experience all together.
I don't know what oranges they use but I watched the machine squeeze my drink in front of my eyes and it was the sweetest more purely squeezed juice I have ever had.
I have gone back a second time and everything that I order there is high quality and just truly an amazing place to try out. I highly recommend it.
Un-believ-freaking-lievable. One bite of their praline cake and i thought i was gonna die from happiness. I don't have much of a sweet tooth but i could not get enough of this cake. Its layer and layer of creamy mousse, crunchy wafers of heaven swimming in a caramel bath, oh god my mouth is watering right now. And the best thing is that its not rot your teeth sweet....i can't wait to go try some of their other pastries!
Mindblowingly awesome!. I cannot even begin to describe the joy I experience when I know I am going to be stopping by this amazing patisserie. Secret Santa first introduced me to the fare here, and I am so grateful it did! I highly (highly) recommend the "Temptation" treat made of mousse and fruit compote... So increbible. Also, the crossaints (of any flavour) are superb. I just can't say enough good things about the food quality. The prices are high, but definitely worth indulging - the staff are kind and patient, and the decor is lovely, warm and comforting. A place to truly feel welcome.
YUMMY. The coffee is soo good and I am a coffee snob, I only like espresso based coffee not drip coffee. The cakes are to die for and the best thing is the meringe, it is crunchy and chewy and melts in your mouth.
I've been going here for about 7 years now. Simply the best pastries, cakes, tortes and breakfast in Calgary. Great place to sit down with friends for some Belgian waffles and a latte. 5 out 5 stars
Finalement - a REAL pâtisserie!. Words cannot express my utter delight at walking in and seeing what I thought I couldn't find outside Québec (in Canada, anyway). Everytime I found a bake shop with "pastries" or "patisseries" in the name, I'd show up a bit disappointed that they really didn't have what I call pâtisseries. The display in this lovely shop reminded of the wonderful things I find in Première Moisson (a popular bakery/pâtisserie chain in Québec). The desserts were a feast for the eyes (and our coffee cream éclair was a feast for our taste buds!). My husband and I managed to resist the éclair long enough to savour our warm, melted brie over caramelized onions served over a nice multigrain bread (with a side of spring greens & balsamic dressing). Fabulous. The only snag: the girl taking our order needed me to repeat everything 2-3 times (hey I tried English AND French... sorry, I don't do Flemish). I don't care if it's pricey - you don't head to a place like this for a bargain - you go for pure eating pleasure, and a bit of something français/belge :)
Favourite Gourmet Cakes. For some really tasty baked goods, make the effort to cross a busy downtown Macleod Trail to get to Manuel Latruwe.
Their baguette was a bit crisp, but nice and soft in the inside with a slight sourness. The ham and cheese bun was amazing, using some high quality cheese. If you like gourmet cheese, definitely pick one of these buns up.
As for the cakes, they were nothing short of amazing. Rich, sweet and delicious, this is definitely a gourmet bakery. I haven't found another Calgary bakery currently open that offers the same quality of pastries.
My favourite has to be the chocolate hazelnut cake. A great rich chocolate mixed with a crunchy hazelnut base that has a wonderful texture as you savour it. The creme brulee is a close second favourite, but that's no surprise. A good creme brulee is realy hard to beat and Manuel Latruwe's is really creamy and eggy which is absolutely pleasing. The lemon tart was nothing to scoff at either, a great mix of sweet and tart, I'd definitely pick one up again.
The prices are high, but so is the quality. When I want to find a nice rich cake I now know where to go in Calgary.
Felt like a bit of Paris in Calgary. I highly recommend the rosemary, potato and guyere cheese quiche and the vanilla slice - outstanding!!! The second time I visited, I purchased a variety of decadent small desserts. Sadly, these were expensive and not great to my surprise. Next time I visit, I will stick to the quiche, vanilla slice and breads-they are worth the visit. I wish the staff provided more efficient and friendly service.
Not sure about the service. Great bakery that produces wonderful pastries and the best croissants in town. Yet, I find the attitiude a bit much sometimes. They don't open on time, are snobby and always seem to make me think twice about going there. I will find a good bakery to replace them if they don't have an attitude adjustment!
As bad for my wallet as my waisteline. While I really enjoyed the treats and friendly staff here I was very much caught off guard by the prices. After picking a few pastries to sample I picked a small bag of almonds to take home. I have never paid so much for nuts in my life.
The food is without a doubt very high quality and the pastries are excellent, but be prepared for the premium you will have to pay for the quality here.
Service was lacking, partially because it was so busy and I don’t think they anticipated that. Overall, this Big Taste experience was disappointing.
...has casual sit down breakfast and lunch dishes, beautiful pastries (including macaroons!), baguette sandwiches for around $7.49 that made my mouth water and a great selection of cappuccinos. I ogled the gorgeous cakes for a few minutes and decided on a ham and cheese croissant for breakfast. I have a feeling I will be frequenting this cute bakery often and you should check them out.

One place that has received more of my business lately is Manuel Latruwe Belgian Patisserie. They won me over with their Nutella icecream so last week I decided to surprise the family with dessert. Tip day - an excellent excuse to spend extra cash on delicious, fattening treats.
Overall, this was a great place to sit down to eat a great lunch. It is a little costly but well worth it if you’re looking for a great quality sandwich or treats!
Located in a tiny spot a hop and a skip away from Bernard Callebaut, its a sweet lover's haven, with... bread, cakes and pastries... they also do ice cream and pizza too.
I hear the Belgian waffles are to die for, but today what caught my eye was the pizza. Pear/Gorgonzolla!
