Normally I'm not one for fish and chips but if you're craving for something different on the Western menu try these guys out. We stopped here on a Friday night and this restaurant was packed. The interior had a nice blue decor which felt like you were actually at the pier. We ordered the trio fish and chips (3 different types of fish) where the fish was lightly battered and came with a house made tartar sauce (delicious). The other plate we ordered were the fish tacos which were delicious (Panko breading, good portion of fish and pickled onions). I really liked their choice of tortilla and onions (tortilla was not soggy and onions were not overpowering). Taking a bite into those tacos you hear that nice crunch. I'd recommend giving this place a try.
My first visit was a success!
The decor is extremely sea-like and kitschy but oddly I didn’t mind it.
It was quite busy on the right side if the
Service is friendly and quick. The food is great. We ordered he starter seafood chowder (which is meal-sized) and it was so hearty with large chunks of whitefish and salmon. The fried oysters and crab cakes were good but the calamari was the star. Not too much batter and it melts in your mouth!
We will definitely go back for more than appys next.
Always excellent. Never been disappointed. One of our family favourites. We've tried everything on the menu by now, always great. We shop at the little market often too. The key lime pie is lovely. Highly recommended.
Calamari used to be some of the best I've ever had but I've noticed over the years it's gone down in flavour and quality same with the fries they have been soggy the last few times I've gone. Service is hit and miss. Good atmosphere and love the decor and fresh seafood market.
A hidden fish and chips place that never fails to deliver quality dinner at a reasonable price. There is also a small fish counter for take home and cook yourself people. Get there early and enjoy some perfectly deep fried goodness.
For traditional fish and chips, chowder and more, you really can't go wrong here. Their location in a very old, small strip plaza makes for sometimes awkward parking, but the food inside is what really counts. The interior is, well, a little (a lot) tacky, but that's also what makes it fun. Service is always good; and the food is outstanding. I don't go often, but I always enjoy it.
One of the last true fish & chips places in Calgary. Its decorated like a ship and the seafood chowder is amazing as are the fish and chips!!
LUV SEAFOOD. Visited on a Friday evening with my cousin and his girlfriend. The have never really enjoyed Seafood before so I brought them here to introduce them to the flavours . We ordered a selection of seafood whcih was all very good. The server/owner I believe was wonderful and funny, and made the experience even better. The only complaint I have I guess is that I found it a little expensive. The food, plus 3 beers and tip came to $100. but Other than it being a bit pricey, I would still come back to try more of their menu as their menu is quite large and has something for everyone.
Yummy Fish Tacos!!!. So I came here for my Birthday dinner last night. I was wanting to go for the Scallops & Chips for sure. But then I saw something new on their menu which was their Fish Tacos. Then I saw somebody on the table next door order it & it looked pretty nice so I ordered it too. The fish tacos were really decent size portions. I got lots of fries on the side. I was actually really filled up. My partner got the 2 piece fish n chips. This place is really good stuff & is not greasy like a lot of other places. I highly recommend!!!!
Great seafood. Always fresh, always delicious. This is a great hidden gem for Atlantic seafood lovers. Best fish and chips in town.
Best fish and chips in the city. We moved to the south and it's well worth the drive. The price is reasonable as well. Make sure you make a reservation.
Fish + chips. The best seafood in the city
Took my family (we have a 2 yr old and a 7 yr old), and the food and service were good.
Of course, it is a fish and chip place. The fish platter are pricey and so is the chowder. I had the cod, my wife had the pollock and my kids had the kids fish and chips. All were good--the fries are salty and great with vinegar! Ordered a small chowder too, but it was average.
Service wise, the manager waited our table and was great!
Good fish and chips, but not worth driving across the city for. However, way better than Joey's Only
NW Fish & Chips. Despite being an established restaurant, I only stumbled across Pelican Pier while looking for a decent fish and chips joint in the northwest.
While the small family run place is pretty small and cozy for a restaurant/market, the food isn't too bad. It's better than the chains, with light fish and light crispy batter. A good selection of fish to choose from as well as a few other dishes on the small menu.
For a lunchtime visit, it wasn't too packed, so the service was quick and friendly.
The prices do seem a bit steep, but for a small run place in a hidden strip mall, I can get over it.
Wonderful and Fresh. I went to the Pelican for the first time today it was chosen by a few guys that said that place is wonderful. I will be honest I do not like seafood. Sometimes I can eat Calamari and shrimp but otherwise I don't eat it. Today I tried the coconut shrimp and the calamari and it was amazing. Not greasy and very very tasty. The dipping sauce was also homemade. Since I do not like fish I ordered the chicken fingers. After years and years of eating chicken fingers at multiple different restaurants I have never come across such tasty delicious fresh chicken fingers. They we so lightly battered and fresh not frozen just so awesome. Yeah you think just chicken fingers how boring...NO not these ones they were so good. My garden salad had home made raspberry vinaigrette dressing and it was so good. Not to mention the 3 new people that tried this restaurant will surely return and we all live out side of the city in the far far south. I highly recommend trying this cute little place. You will not leave disappointed. I would like to add the manager is so wonderful and great. Thank you Pelican for an amazing experience. (PS. I opened a urbanspoon account just for this post because I think it is very much worth it). :)
Very very small portions wit.... We had a carry out - it was far from the usual small portions with around 20 fries (chips) that you get at other fish shops -- Come here instead and get a really generous portion of fish and a field of potatoes.
Loved it. Thanks guys.
Great Fish & Chips. We like great fish and chips and The Pelican Pier has always proven to serve an outstanding product. I feel there is a lack of good seafood restaurants in Calgary, so we often visit this location. The fact that there is a great seafood take out market as part of the concept is a bonus. The food and suroundings are top notch but the flow of service needs some work. I do not like getting my soup and main course at the same time. We found Carliee provided very friendly service during our visit. Will certianly visit the pier again!
Dependable. Our go-to-place for fish 'n chips in town. Good chowder, good calamari, good slabs of halibut. Generally satisfied and full after a meal.
Just Your Average Diner
+4.5
Great food! Can order pollock, hammock, cod or salmon. Ordered mussels, scallops and panko coated salmon, all was excellent! Keylime pie was incredible! Friendly staff, good food! Recommended!
Time of day. My husband and I have gone to Pelican Pier once or twice a month for years. We have definately noticed that the food and the service is better if you go at lunch time when the owner is serving and cooking.
Great first time dine-in!. I stopped in tonight to this cute, quaint restaurant at about 9 tonight with my fiance, and I just have to tell you all the experience was fabulous. From the beginning, where we were greeted by two very nice young ladies, who were very hospitable and outgoing. We had ordered the "to-die-for" crabcakes, which came out quickly and just as soon as we were done our appetizer out followed my fiance's cod and chips and my deluxe chowder. Both were good, hot and quickly served yet again. We loved the great personable service we chuckled at the server's witty demeanor, loved the piping hot food-we were first timers and now going to be regulars. The food was exceptional, so was the service.
We love it. It has fast become the seafood restaurant of choice. The food is terrific and reasonably priced. Unfortunate that they took the corn and crab chowder off the menu but we still return and bring new friends with us each time to try other items beautifully prepared and presented. Lindsay Harper is a gracious efficient host as well has having a great memory for people's favorites. This place is a gem!
Good but. Chips let it down
Good fish, chips not so much. I really enjoyed the lightly battered fish we picked up from Pelican pier, it was crisp and nicely cooked. We had the pollock this time round and found it mild yet nice.
I didn't like the chips as much, they were overcooked and a tad oily. The variety of potato they use is too waxy and the chips brown badly when cooked. These also were quickly limp after returning home with them.
I'd go back but would dine in so that I could enjoy the freshness of the food more. I also would like to try more from the menu and sample some of the fresh and cook at home offerings.
We have eaten there a few times and really enjoy the place. We don't live in Calgary, the atmostphere is really good as well as the food.
Casual, comfortable and affordable..... Pelican Pier is a spot you can count on for affordable seafood in landlocked Calgary. It's one of those unassuming restaurants that isn't gimmicky or flashy -- it is what it is and it's good. Seems to be quite popular with the 'older' generation (okay, everytime I've been there, it's full of seniors --- that's all I'm trying to say, nothing wrong with that -- just noticed the popularity with that group) and it is a family friendly restaurant.
Most days, I order one of the chowder soups or an appetizer (love the oysters and crab cakes) -- they're all delish -- and the Scallops! But on Tuesday, you just have to go for the buy one get the 2nd half price deal on 3 pce fish and chips. Of course, I had to start with the Crabmeat and Corn Chowder -- it may be one of the best chowders I've had in Calgary. The fish and chips is usually decent but on Tuesday, it was a little greasier than usual and the chips unfortunately are never my favorite cuz I like my chips crispy not soggy. The portion size of the 3 pce fish is quite large. The ambience is casual and the service is consistent but nothing spectacular.
I like the seafood market/bar part of it as well -- I've bought the crab cakes and cooked them at home in a little butter and it tasted great! Pelican Pier is consistent and a good place for reasonable seafood in a casual atmosphere -- not upscale like Catch or Murietta's, which are also good restaurants.
FREQUENTED FAVOURITE. Definitely my favourite family seafood restaurant.
And the fish "bar" is perfect to pick up already prepared ready to cook options for dinner that I know are natural and not processed.
I have gone at least over a dozen times and I have tried everything on the menu never to be disappointed by over cooking or under cooking..
The menu has great prices if it compared to the quality and to other restaurants, I thought the pricing was much better than the seafood chains and the atmosphere is a nice get away from the every day.
