Review Basil - Calgary

Corey Johnson
Excellent pho! I had the spicy chicken pho and it was great. Fast and friendly service. Large portions.

I travelled around Calgary for 6 years in search for the best beef pho sate. I tried friends' and coworkers' suggestions, and the ones top-rated by online food bloggers and influencers. My final verdict: Basil has the BEST PHO SATE in the city! The first sip of the broth ignites the senses. No other pho has done that to me. Also, it's the only pho I could finish the broth of without feeling nauseous. I just keep coming back here to cleanse my tongue of other pho's. 😁 * * * I wrote this review in 2019 on Facebook, and I realized this review is long overdue on Google. Photo is from 2019 as well. I now live in Edmonton, but I can't wait to taste this again. I have been to several pho restos in Edmonton, but nothing beats this wonder.

This is one of my favorite spots for lunch! The pho and vermicelli bowls are always consistently delicious and fresh. Service is always very prompt and friendly. I mostly do take out but the restaurant looks clean and a good, cozy place for a meal.
Jade Pho
Tasty food, quick service, great portions, very friendly staff and clean and bright space! What more can you ask for? Not many places impress me but I will definitely be back!!

Delicious Vietnamese cuisine! I had the beef stew with buttered baguette which really hit the spot! Reminded me of my childhood eating my dads Vietnamese cooking. My friends had pho and vermicelli which they said they would come back for again. Only thing was I wish they served complimentary tea instead of just water with the meal.

Fast, friendly service. Really accommodating for guests from Europe who arnt familiar with vietnamese food. Food was hot, really tasty. Would definitely recommend to anyone!
Merkulow Dmytro
Really tasty and thanks owners that served us even we get there during last working hour
Sarah Drinkwater (Sarah Munsie)
Lovely employees and the food is very good! Really a great spot to eat and happy to be able to dine in the restaurant again.

Stopped here simply based on the fact that it was close to the hotel I was staying at. Checked the reviews and they were good.

Now I love PHO and it is hard to impress me with PHO as I have enjoyed some amazing bowls over the years across the country.

I had the Ph.5 medium rare beef.

The bowl was insanely good! Fresh mint along with a hot pepper on the side are great touches. In fact one of the best bowls I have ever had.

I’m glad I’m in town all week. I will be back as much as possible!

Good food fast service and a clean restaurant.

Food is consistently tasty. Can be quite loud during the lunch rush hour. Plenty of seating though and food comes out quick. Would come back

I ordered the Sate Vermicelli with chicken, prawns and pork as it was too hot out for soup. I found it to be quite salty and. It spicy at all. I quickly wished I had tried the soup instead 😕
This is one of the nicest Vietnamese restaurants that I have been in though. Very very clean, classy decor and they have a little patio! The staff was wonderful as well. I think I'll give it a second try so I can see what the pho is like...stay tuned.

I first ate at Basil probably around 2010 and I was in love. The beef sate soup was spicy and rich and I always named Basil as my favorite Vietnamese in the city. I didn't get to go very often for quite a few years as I had moved away, but recently have made several trips there as I'm in the NE more often. It's definitely not the same, not even close. It's like any mediocre place you can find anywhere in Calgary. If your pho broth isn't good, nothing else can be good either. The food isn't bad, it's just average now. I don't know what's happened between the first times I ate there and now, but it's not a must go destination like I used to think of it.

I am a pho lover! I love the special combo pho in this restaurant, but it varies a little bit from visit to visit. Sometimes really good, sometimes just good. You may find it’s a bit pricy comparing with other pho places but they put a lot of beef! My husband had a sandwich with beef and chicken the other day and he liked it quite a lot.
Patti Taylor
Went for lunch. The food was ordinary but still decent. The place was not clean...greasy prints and splashes on the walls and door. Needs a really good cleaning. Felt rushed by staff even tho it wasn't full. Won't go again.
Lynn
Acceptable food. Loaded with MSG. Service is dicey. Triple check your order or they'll blame you for ordering wrong if the wrong food item comes out. I ordered by food name and they wrote down the wrong food number once and came out insisting I ordered phở bo when I adamantly said phở gà by name, not the food number. Make sure you don't have an important function too soon after unless you feel like falling asleep from all the MSG loaded into their soups.
M D
The soup here is the best vietnamese ive had, spicy and incredibly flavourful. The vermicelli bowls are also very good.

They have a very delicious and flavourful stew as well; the broth tastes like a sweet potato and veggie mix with very tender beef.
Lap Chi Duong
He best com no luc lac in the city. Tender and juice brought out steaming hot perfect for lunch, order a soup in the side to quench your thirst a bit.
Tmoski
The pho was alright. Meat was super thin and overcooked. Tripe was brutal - tough and old! Noodles alright and broth was good. For $12 it's not a big portion. Most places the pho is $8-$9 and it's a massive portion. Don't need to go back here the value isn't there. Service was mediocre.
Konnymi
Food is great, they only have one size but big portions prices are decent. Service is OK. Will be back for the Vietnamese stew!
KT
Very diverse menu. While being in the NE you'll find their pricing to be quite high. Their pricing seems equivalent to downtown Vietnamese restaurants. Their Pho Sate is good, comparable to their old location on 17th ave. Their rice dishes and bun dishes are not so much.
Sally Zehan
Quick service and good food. Their sate noodle soup is one of the best in Calgary, similar to that of Pho Dau Bo's. They also have good Vietnamese beef stew and the servings are huge. All the food came out pretty quick and our spring rolls were warm but that's alright. All in all, somewhere I would come back for Vietnamese cravings.
S
Their pho tai bo vien was good. However, their portions are too small... and at $12 a bowl you should be getting more, not less, than what other (cheaper AND better) pho places offer. When my fiancé, who's Vietnamese (and knows good pho), first tasted the broth, he was certain there was plenty of MSG in it, which is unfortunate. The food did come out super fast, which was nice.

I have been here a couple of times and honestly it is not one of the places I would choose to go to from my previous experiences. However, my friend suggest we meet here since we haven't seen each other in a while.

The service here is not good, boarding on rude, and I'm the type of person that is use to typical Chinese restaurant service where it is a prerequisite to have mediocre service. My friends and I were catching up and didn't look at the menu once we immediately sat down. The server came up to us twice (within 5 minutes), and we told her we weren't ready. She looked pretty offended the second time. So the third time, a different server, took our order, and she was very polite. One of my friend ordered a sub which didn't require utensil so the first server came back, after we order, and grab her utensils and placed it, rather forcefully, in front of me as I didn't have any. After that, she didn't come to our table and our water was refilled by other people.

The food here is typical and not memorable. I had pho here before and it was ok. This time I ordered vermicelli with grilled pork and spring rolls. There was a lot of vermicelli, little vegetables, and an okay amount of meat. The dish came with two spring rolls, and they were not cut. I found this very odd as everywhere I know cut their spring rolls into a bite side piece so you don't have to pick it up with your fingers to eat it. If I wanted to do that, I would have ordered it as an appetizer.
S.W
I came here a couple years ago and had the pho sate beef it was phenomenal !

I came again a couple weeks ago and tried the sate beef salad rolls (not the best) and a pork vermicelli. It was quite bland and boring. The spring rolls were tiny and not cut up. I wouldn't order it again.
Scruffle
This place is awesome. When gangstas get murdered in it, you know it's good. Not meaning to be glib, and it might be in bad taste considering what what really happened there but the Pho is killer. If you have any insecurities do yourself a favour and go for lunch.
Nabeel Shamji
I usually come here for the sate beef soup as it is some of the best in the city and is great when you're under the weather. Feeling sick I thought I would order some to help me feel a bit better. I placed the order for the soup and some sate chicken salad rolls. When my sister went to pick up the order for me they had screwed it up and instead of the salad rolls they had made some spring rolls. The spring rolls contain pork which is against my religion to eat. She told them that we did not order that and don't want it because we cannot eat it and it will go to waste. They proceeded to be quite rude with my sister and insisted that's what we ordered. They kept arguing with my sister to the point where they said they are going to charge her for it regardless if we take it or not. My sister, because I was sick and she was tired of dealing with them paid and left. On top of this when she went to pick the food up the employee was eating and approached my sister, mouth full of food, what did you order. Horrible service, rude employees without any manners and management that doesn't care. Save your money and time and don't visit basil I know I won't be ever again.
Tkadventures
It's pretty good, came here a few times. Service is always fast! Servers are very friendly. I love the broth it's very tasty compared to most pho restaurants. I usually order the pho dac biet so good! Will definitely come back!
HungryNikkki
I absolutely love this place. I always get the Ph1 (Beef Sate Pho) and am never disappointed. The broth is spicy and delicious and I haven't had anything else around the city that compares. My only complaint is the staff seem to make up their own hours. The menu states when they are open but there has been numerous times I called and there was no response. When I was last in, they mentioned they're phone has problems... I think that was a silly excuse for them closing early.

Came here today for lunch and had the "ultimate vietnamese sub". It was really really delicious.

The bread was crispy but soft, the beef had amazing flavour, and the cucumber and carrot inside was crunchy. Really thought it was fantastic.

The menu said it was spicy, but it wasn't really. Other subs from other places can sometimes have an unavoidable spicy sauce, but this sub's spiciness came from the large jalapeño style peppers perched on top. Easy enough to remove if you're not feeling like something spicy.

We also had the pork spring rolls. They were pretty good. Crispy and tasty!

The restaurant is pretty nice and modern, and I would definitely come back again if I was in the area!
Kaycee Ann Lunde
Awesome Pho!! I always order the spicy beef sate soup, extra spicy and then get 2 to take home. I haven't tried anything else on the menu because its SO good !!!! They are packed at lunch and have fast service. I drive in from Airdrie just for Basil Pho.
Michelle
This place has some good pho! This is one of the pho places that I would recommend. The broth is very tasty. There's a huge parking lot so tons of space. The service is decent. Also serves the pho in a good time too.
Jenna
My go to place for lunch! Despite always being full, you are guaranteed to be in and it within an hour. The pho broth is packed with flavor and the meat portions are more compared to other places. Service is always so friendly and even though they water glasses are super tiny, they always make sure it is filled!
Don CS
Probably the best pho in the city....there are so many mediocre and crappy places to get pho.....but these guys know what's up! Fresh ingredients, good quality meat, good portions. The name says it all "ultimate pho". I frequently go here for lunch, which is super quick.
Heather Gummo
For a long time I took the Vietnamese food in Calgary for granted. We may not have the delicious, cheap sushi of Vancouver, or the mind-blowing bagels of Montreal, but when it comes to pho and vermicelli, it’s hard to argue that we have some of the best! Everyone has their favourite noodle soup and for me, Basil is some of the best in the city.
Maxwellbracey
First time to Basil. Place is fairly clean, staff are a bit cold. Ordered Sate Beef Soup and Not so Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice - not nearly enough noodles in the soup and the juice was powdered with a wedge of a real orange for $4.95 Yikes!! If you want the best Pho experience in Calgary go to Bagaloc next to the Chinook LRT.

Been here many many times, and I’ve always enjoyed their shrimp salad rolls, veggie spring rolls and one of the best sate seafood pho I’ve tasted. Service is quick, and the restaurant is tidy and clean. Would recommend!
PhilipD
I've been to this place many times and was just here recently.
The pho is always delicious. The broth is unique to other restaurants as it has a "sweeter" taste to it. The sate is also good but I like the regular broth much better.
I used to add hot sauce and hoisin sauce to my pho but stopped because it masks the taste of the broth. Instead, I just add the sauce to the side dish and dip my beef balls in it.

I've only been here during their steady times and the food comes out quickly.

The service is good, the restaurant is very clean and the decor is modern.
Daniel
Good food..services a bit slow..other than that everything are good..
Erin Matthews
Flavours are underwhelming.
I had their veggie stirfry.
Three pieces of tofu (come on, it's my protein) and a few veggies. I've had much better portion sizes at other Vietnamese restaurants in the area.
Definitely lacking salt. I had to add my own and I never consume that much sodium to begin with.
I wouldn't eat here again.
Their veggie spring rolls were good.
Foodaddict
This is the best pho I have ever had. Ph.1 beef rare with peanut sauté is what I always get. It's spicy and flavourful and unlike any other pho. I have tried other pho places and have not been able to find anything comparable to basil.
Sharon
Ive been to basil a handful of times, mostly for lunch as its close to my work. It gets quite busy here during the lunch hours. Dinner time is more steady. I usually order soup here and my brother mentioned that he enjoys the sate. I differ, as im not the biggest fan of the sate there. It not bad but i find it a bit more on the spicier side and not much sate taste.
The service is good here and i really did enjoy the veggie spring rolls the most. I love taro mmmm.
Aventura_girlz
These guys have the most amazing chicken sate salad rolls. Heaven. I love the Sate soup and the Sate bun too. They make my bubble tea half sweet also. Subs are not my favorite here but everything else is 200% better than anywhere else in the city.
Magically Delicous
Delicous springrolls!!! Ordered B4. Yummy. Good peanut taste!!
Only didnt like the watered down hot sauce but overall, great bowl of food!! :)
Martin Dvorak
Favorite Sate beef Pho in Calgary hands-down. Always spicy and flavorful with a rich peanut taste, the large bowl seems too big as first but always ends up empty. The beef is 9 times out of 10 very nice lean beef. Great Vietnamese coffee as well. Sometimes I'm on a special low-carb diet and they can accommodate me by substituting vegetables instead of Vermicelli noodles. Nice staff as well.

I end up here every week or so when the craving hits me. I highly recommend it.

Disappointed. I went to Basil and we had a server, a 40 something lady who was not that polite to us. She even asked me if I know how to use chop sticks before she gave them to me. Once we got our bill we noticed an extra charge that said open table. We inquired about the extra charge and she said that it was because I ordered extra vegetables but I was already charged for it. Then she said that it is because i ordered the spicy soup but the soup on the menu was spicy and i already paid for the soup, there was no indication on the menu that there was an extra charge if you wanted the soup spicy, i didn't even ask for it to be spicy. During this period of me inquiring why our bill had an extra charge she started speak Vietnamese to the other workers. They all went to town speaking Vietnamese at each other in regards to our concern. I was so embarrassed, obviously i don't speak Vietnamese in front of your customers...rude and i felt that they were speaking poorly of us because we complained about our bill. In the end they took the extra charge off and we left a tip because the food was good but they were rude about it and we all felt embarrassed, you should never have to go through that when a restaurant tries to sneak more money on your bill. Be ware of your bill next time you go!

Top Pho spot in Calgary. Food and service are top quality, only spot I've ever gone to in Calgary. All dishes have very rich and authentic taste!! 5/5
Shantilovesfood
AMAZING. I went here yesterday the food was amazing and the price was great for the amount of food you get I can't wait until I go here again , service was quick and friendly ! I would definitely suggest to go here and get the pho ! I also got the spicy sub it was so good my husband took it from me . 10/10 most 100%

BEST PHO I HAVE EVER HAD.. BEST PHO, BEST SUBS, EVERYTHING ON THE MENU! I've searched Calgary for good pho, and this is the spot to hit! they put so much effort and love into the food they serve. the pho had amazing flavors every time. Best sate soup I've tried as well. service is always amazing. other pho restaurants should really learn from Basil.
Mr Mayhem
Don't waste your money. Horrible food horrible service plain and simple. trust me I wouldn't waste my time to post this otherwise

Wasn't impressed with the food. I ordered a chicken sate salad roll and chicken pho and both were lacking flavour. Salad rolls weren't fresh; pho had a lot of chicken, but didn't taste very good. Service was really good, just wish their food was better.
Jon B
Best pho in Ne?? not really.. Overall i rate their pho 2/5!
Way too much msg. After eating i feel like having an msg overdose every time. and im Vietnamese.

Best Pho Sate in Calgary. IMO, the best vietnamese restaurant in Calgary. Always order the pho sate, and it is consistently delicious. I have recommended this restaurant to everyone I know and they always come back to me with the same positive feedback. Customer service is good as well -- food comes out very quick and as we are (somewhat) regular customers, the lady there always remembers to give me a fork (can't use chopsticks well) even without asking!
Chuck M
Good Food Served to you hot and efficiently - but WAY TOO LOUD!. I love the food here, but it's virtually impossible to carry on a conversation here without literally screaming at your party. It's impossible to have a conversation over the lunch hour- I wish they would do something about this.
Kyle.fm.davies
Fast and Friendly. My fiance and I really enjoy Pho restaurants. I've been to a few and often find that the service is often lacking. Usually the food is always good, but the servers dont ask how your meal is, they have to be bugged to bring you water or refills. I never thought Pho was that good until I went to Basil.
Basils staff is extreamly friendly. The food comes out hot and fresh very quickly and it always tastes great. I have returned to Basil over and over again and always go home full and happy. I would recommend this place to anyone.
Stuff My Face
Sate Chicken Sub with extra veggies. My favorite sub place but last time they used banana peppers. Didn't expect that. Will have to cut those out.
Rick E Bobby
Good sate! Well it should be it's owned by the same people who own pho dau bo, a sate staple in the hood. Spring rolls were pretty bland tho. Good service but a little more pricey than pdb
Hose.Water
Great soup. Bad atmosphere.

Big bowl SMALL PORTIONS. Came here for lunch and ordered a beef ball soup with veggies (instead of noodles). looking at the bowl they served me, the beef balls were cut up into very small pieces to make the soup look full. i counted 21 pieces of these beef balls, so essentially they gave me 5 and quarter beef balls with 2 stems of broccoli, 2 stems of cauliflower and not even a handful of chopped up carrots. the photo was taken before i started eating... you can see how full OR EMPTY the bowl was filled from the level on the spoon... there are NO NOODLES in this soup...
this all costed $9.50 + GST!!!!!!!! OUTRAGEOUS.
this place is definitely not worth coming back. they also watered down their sriracha sauce... or put a fake/cheap version of it on the table. it was watery and tasted more like spicy vinegar.
Family Man
Good food but mistake on the bill. My family was traveling through Calgary and my wife wanted Vietnamese. Basil's was close to our hotel so we tried it. The food was delicious and the service was good and the menu prices were very reasonable ... the only problem is that we got overcharged. They had just switched to a new till software system (according to the owner) so that may have been the cause. At any rate, I'd recommend the place, just be attentive to your bill.
YumYum
Love it. Work really close and eat here at least once a week. Even on hot days, I'm always down for the Sate pho.
Alan
Just had lunch here , place was busy with the lunch crowd ... We had out 4 year old with us . Staff cleared us an outside table so we could eat in he sun... Wife is fussy, but we weren't let down... Food was quick , hot, and tasted great... Staff on duty were super attentive and despite the busy time of day were all over us when we needed it ... I'm stuffed and it' was a great experience ... Seemed everyone else was enjoying as well!!! Thanks

The salad roll sucks. Well my gf and I ordered a salad roll, within a minutes the rolls arrived.
we are sunrise that how fast it came!!

First bite from my gf, she can't bite off the roll skin. it made it like a day ago at least! so we ask for return it
the manager /boss shoes up and explain they made it when we order
and ask us Did we try the roll before anyway!! that very nice attitude!!

and I really don't understand how to make 3 rolls right after my order and Bring to my table within 1 minutes??

well the noodles soup is good and I think that is it!
Isaac Cortez Rivas
I've been to so many different Pho restaurants, I usually order pork spring rolls, pho tai or pho chin and beef, chicken and shrimp skewers. At basil I ordered springs rolls followed by pho tai. On a scale from 1 - 10, 10 being the most delicious, I give them a 5 compared to places like pho xuan and the one on 17th beside giant tiger and binh pho falconride. I give the pho a 6.5. Service an 7.5. The place a solid 8.
Fatso
Run of the mill food and terrible customer service. I've been here 3 times (not by choice) and all 3 we're let downs. Food is generic and if you are going to eat here do not anticipate a "thank you for coming" or "how was the food". Not even while paying. There is no customer service which add to the poor experience.
GURVIR CUMO
It is one of the worst places I have visited in NE Calgary. They have no sense of customer service. We being vegetarian asked them about the details of the ingredients- our server(who seemed to be owner or someone in partnership) talked to us so rudely. I quickly wrapped up everything and left. The guy didn't even try to ask us once if there is something wrong or if he could do something to make us happy.
Helen
Terrible. Spent my last dollar here today. Worst value for your money, they will nickle and dime you and provide terrible customer service. Too many places to choose from, dont waste your money or time here.
Therealpopo28
Sate beef noodle soup. Had the sate beef noodle soup. The broth was amazing! The noodles were great. This soup was by far the most spicy sate I have ever had it was perfect. The beef was very rare and cooked in the broth and was cut in very nice pieces. The only downfall is the Bowl was really big and they barely filled it half way (as seen in the picture I posted). I would give it a 9.2 but would be higher if the Bowl didn't look empty when it came. Staff was very friendly but started to turn customers away 30 mins before closing saying they were closed already. I guess they didn't need the business.
Girlcanuk
Basil's IS by far the best Vietnamese food I've had outside of Vietnam! I've tried most of their menu and it's always fresh and served fast. Most of the staff is friendly and helpful, the only problem I have is the woman (owner) where you pay is a tad abrupt and not overly friendly or personable. Aside from that the place is amazing!
ThamTham
One of my favourite places for vietnamese food. Prices are reasonable and the decor is moden contemporary inside. Food is good with a clear broth in the noodles. Portions are just right.

Great food, great service. I've been to a lot of Vietnamese places in town, but this was some of the best pho and spring rolls I've ever had. Staff was attentive and friendly. Orders came ultra-fast.

Chicken Sub. I had the sate chicken sub today and the little chicken pieces that was in the sub was so dry, my jaw got a good workout trying to chew it. The bun was fresh though. I've had better subs elsewhere. Won't be rushing back.

Stiffed with some elses tab. Food was good as always although the prices were on a bit on the high side. Our group sat with some folks which we knew and had a good lunch. When we went to leave (after paying) the Mgr came running out and started yantering that one of the folks in the initial party did not pay for his soup. Being a good natured person, and having worked in the food industry, I elected to pay for the soup. When I asked the other folks back at work who didn't pay, the three of them indicated that that they did pay, as it was on their cards. When I called the Mgr back and explained the situation, he indicated that it is not his problem, as he was not going to be out of pocket for the soup and that we should have not sat with them and should have sat at another table!! I know it's only 10 bucks, but it is the principle that matters.
Although the food is good, I will never go back.

-----08 Jan, 2014-----

Sticking you with the bill. Gross. I got the lemongrass chicken dish but on rice instead of vermicelli. The chicken was really old.. like it had been left over from lunch time. I went at 3pm. It was tough to chew and so dry. It was cold too, same with the rice.

Overpriced and not going back. It was sooo disappointing!
Eatfatfeelthin
Food was only mediocre and prices were high for random Vietnamese food in the NE. Beside people have been shot and died there so not really worth the risk for a bowl of less than average soup.
Amanda
Best satay in town!!!!
Jennlikesbeer
Crave the Pho. Sate Beef Noodle Soup... if I had to pick one thing to eat every day, it would be this. Best Pho I have had in the city, you get a lot more meat than at other places and it's not fatty or stringy, the broth is amazing, huge portion. I have only ever eaten in during lunch, and they are quick and friendly - food comes out very quickly, which is great when you have to get back to work. I pick up take out on my way home from work frequently. Love this place.

Only the soup is good... but the lady server seems rude... makes the aetvice bad

I dot know if ill ever good to this reaturant again

BAD service GREAT Food. I think the food here is better than any other Vietnamese restaurant I've been too. However the service is lacking as they definitely don't understand how to connect with customers properly. In addition, do to language barriers they sometimes mess up orders, which is OK as screw ups are bound to happen in a restaurant as busy as this one, however when you try to correct it they will NOT take blame - their policy seems to be the customer is always wrong!
Ayla Gold
Amaizing service amaizing food by far the best restaurant in the city for vietnamese and pho. My son got sick all over the table and they insisted on cleaning up the mess no matter how much I tried to do it myself they gave him a gingerale for his tummy at no charge and put tiger balm on his temples to help with his fever. Aside from having amaizing food they went above and beyond to help us out what a great place to eat.
Nadia8santos
Do the take out!. The food was absolutely excellent, fresh, spicy and flavourful. The service was on the other end of the spectrum, horrible. I usually tip very well, even if the service is mediocre. For the first time ever I left a minuscule tip. I hope they got the message!

Like it. Good Pho place, price is excellent and the service is good. The decor is ok and they keep it fairly clean. For the money its a great lunch spot
Kay
I called everywhere trying to find pho for delivery. I've never tried basil before, but decided to after he agreed to help me out and deliver. We ordered two bowls of the beef sate and two bubble teas. THIS IS THE BEST BEEF SATE I'VE EVER HAD. And the avocado bubble tea was also one of the best ones I've ever tried. I usually have to add so much hot sauce, but it was absolutely perfect. Most definitely going back. Side note, the prices are slightly different than the ones that have been posted.

Good food. Tasty food.the best soup in town.

Excellent! We've had consistently good service, and quality of food over the last 3 years. Every order has been excellent, and authentic. My husband usually orders the pho, and I the Vietnamese subs. Always amazing! I only wish they were opened later.

Basil is fantastic. The older asian gal is one of the hottest gals in town. Pho is pretty good too.

Excellent food. I am in Calgary several times a year and have been here many times - always leave full, never disappointed. The satay pho is awesome. The bubble tea is great!

Yuck. I tried this place once before the shooting and it was not good at all. i usually have the sate beef and when it came out, it was lacking in flavour and the portion wasn't the greatest. the meat seemed old like it's been sitting out for awhile. i decided to give this place another chance after the shooting and it was the biggest mistake of my life! the place was dead and the service is so bad like they don't even care about their customers. i would not recommend this place to anyone. thumbs down!

Yummy. This is my go-to restaurant for pho. I love their satay soup and regular soup. The portions are the perfect size to fill me up. The broth has deep flavors and much better than any other pho in calgary. The decor and atmosphere is nice and modern.

Average pho in my opinion, staff were very attentive and filled water many times throughout the meal. A lot of better places in Calgary but this was just plain average in terms of food.

Sizzling Beef. I went here with my wife and another couple. I has roasted chicken with rice. Other members had sizzling beef (I think that is what it is called), vermicelli noodle bowl with shrimp, and wor won ton soup. Everyone loved their meal except the soup. She said it had a different taste then she was use to. We surmised the difference was Chinese to Vietnamese cuisine. The sizzling beef was good enough the eater wanted to order a 2nd helping.

Restaurant staff were nice. Checked on us often.
My only complaint would be the hours of operation. We would have made a 2nd order with more dishes if the kitchen had not closed. My advice go early.

Worst food ever, very uncourteous staff and no customer satisfaction.

I love the sate beef soup. Best sate beef soup in the city

The food has been good, but since the shooting at this restaurant-the energy hasn't been that great and sadly, service has plummeted. It's not busy anymore which is a plus I guess because we can always get a table now but it's the only restaurant I've been to where if you're not happy with your meal - they pretty much say. "too bad...you ordered it". Business seems yo be suffering and I suspect I'll be hard to bounce back if they keep up the bad service.

Great Service - Great Food - I am happy to support a family run and owned Calgary Business .

Holy pho. We had the pork spring rolls and two bowls of the beef sate with rare beef and it was amazing. The beef was lean and tender with not a trace of fat or grisle. The broth was tasty with just the right amount of spice and the serving was huge. The spring rolls were okay and not my favorite part of the meal. The service was good and the food came out quickly. Our water was refilled several times during our meal. It was quiet in the evening and I imagine it is more of a lunch place.

Good viet. Lots of friends said this place was a upscale trendy viet restaurant. i live out in the nw, so therefore i pass a lot of pho places before i arrive here.i must say its good, but certainly not the best. don't get me wrong... it is a great restaurant the atmosphere here is top notch, the food taste great, fresh basil and sprouts. But ive had better pho for example the place on 64 close to deerfoot. however the prices here were fair for portions

Liars. For any vegetarians out there do not go here.

I went here because I was told that Basil had an amazing Vegetarian selection. Upon ordering I confirmed with the server to make sure that no animal was used in the making of the broth. She politely said no. I will admit it tasted just like Pho. Since I became a vegetarian, I hadn't been able to find a Vegetarian Pho that tasted that good....I should have known it was too good to be true.

Of course I had to tell my friend about this amazing find. Unfortunately she told me that the amazing flavour was from none other... chicken bones.

If you aren't a vegetarian, I say hav-atter. If you are a vegetarian though, I wouldn't trust a word these people have to say.

Good food, HORRIBLE SERVICE. Been there a few times, since the food is good( hoping service would be different). But nope, crappy service is what they do. Will not be returning. You think being in the 'serving' industry they would serve at a higher quality.

Good Food. Food 10/10
Salad rolls and spring rolls are a must for appetizer. They are good for sharing, although I usually wouldn't want to share since I could finish an order af each all for myself.
Always get the sate pho. You can get any of their phos and ask them to be served with sate broth. They are delicious! Best sate version I have tasted out of all Vietnamese restaurants I have gone to. It is creamy, sweet and spicy all at the same time. No other pho you will ever taste anywhere in Calgary. Always add extra balls on my soup no matter what it is. Bowls of the pho are really big and filling. My coworkers usually finish the whole thing and are full for the whole day! Vermicceli bowls are just as filling.
Food comes out quick! Delicious! Delicious! Delicious!
Vegetarian is made with beef broth. Always ask first, which just makes sense. My friend forgot to ask one time but the server did mention it anyway which is good for vegeterians.

Drinks
Drinks! Refreshing. Love the vietnamese coffee. Great bubble teas made with fresh fruits and orange juice is made fresh too. Drinks are healthy.

Service
Quick service. We walk in, get seated and given ice water and refreshments - all within seconds of walking in. .
Lunch rushes can be such a mess depending on who your servers are. One white female server always messes up my orders during weekdays. Refill your glass with cold water when they can. I love my spicy food so I need my water. Quick clean up when you are done your meals which is good so I can spend time socializing with my table rather than worry about the mess I made. I try not to eat late on weekdays. Eating at night time can be a horrible experience as the owners seem to screw around and talk to people, friends I assume, rather than work or serve customers. You could hear them laughing at their table or chit chatting away behind the counter. Expect to wait a while to get your orders taken and don't expect water refills when the younger servers aren't working. Once you get your food they will forget about you. So best time to eat is during the day or weekends.

Atmoshphere
Always clean. Decor is modern but homey. I once ate beside a family with three kids, two who made a big mess on the floor. They are quick to clean it up. As a patron I was disgusted by how messy some kids can be but they keep their cool which is good. Kitchen lady came out with a sour face on and made the family uncomfortable, even me. Night time is quiter and you can eat more peacfully versus lunch rushes that can get busy and loud when full. Ask for the bill when it is busy and a line up starts at the counter and ends at the door. Overall, great service!

Good food, horrible hours. We showed up at 7:30pm and were turned away. What kind of restaurant closes so early???
Carnivore
Fantastic upscale vietnamese cuisine. Great service, better food and more than reasonable prices.

I went in to Basils the other day to pick up lunch for my sisters and I. I had never been there before but my sisters quite liked the food their. I went to the counter and placed their orders and just got the same as one of my sisters, the lemongrass chicken with spring roll. I asked the girl at the counter if there was only Chicken in that meal, as I am a partial vegetarian and only eat chicken/turkey. I made this clear to her and she assured me that it was just chicken. I get it home and take a big bite of the spring roll dipped in the sauce provided and looked in the roll to see meat. I checked the menu and their was no mention of chicken spring rolls, only pork so I called basils to ask and got the same girl who took my order. I asked if it was chicken and she said "oh, I didn't know you mean in the whole meal, I thought you meant is there chicken in just the chicken part". Yes, I was checking to make sure you aren't breeding some sort of cow-chicken hybrid and feeding it to me. Idiot. So it turns out that was pork, oh and he sauce is a freakin fish sauce on top of that! Plus, the lemongrass chicken tasted like mr.clean. I will NEVER eat here again. Unacceptable and incompotent service and gross food on top of that.
