I don’t often make the trek down International Avenue but now that most of the construction is done, it’s not that bad to get to. I met a new friend at the restaurant for supper – a fellow IG foodie @the_exploring_palate. Anna and I hit it off through social media and thought it would be great to check out a restaurant new to us both. We figured Indonesian food would be a safe bet for dairy free (since many of the dishes use coconut milk).
Amazing and authentic Indonesian flavours! My Indonesian sister in law was thrilled we found this place for a special night out. Lovely family run restaurant.
Cozy place with excellent service and amazing food!!!
The Wonton soup and noodles with egg are the goto dish each time! The best soup in the world is also a great dish and a must to try! Ginger tea to finish off!
Outside appearance/parking space isn't great.
The inside is small, but cozy, and has a hint of cultural richness to it.
I ordered the BBQ fish and BBQ wings. Was done, presented, and tasted very nicely. Had an interesting grocery section where some people walked in to buy sauces and spices.
Would like to try the ginger beef next time. I would recommend. The place had friendly service.
My wife went here after googling restaurants looking for something different. We ordered the Nasi Goreng Seafood Special and the Nasi Padang. Both of these dishes were incredible. The server was friendly and the service was fast. The place is cosy and small. AAA
Excellent food, well balanced flavors, friendly service. I had "the best soup in the world" and my husband had mie goreng (I am going to guess that isn't spelled right). The good reviews are justified. We will be back.
It's the only one Indonesian restaurant in Calgary and they try to make the food as authentic as possible. This is a family owned place and the food didn't disappoint my in-laws who were born in Indonesia but came to visit from Toronto. The owners who run this place are very friendly and my in-laws had a wonderful time to chat with them. The place was not busy at the time we were there but maybe because not many people know about it but they have been in business for quite sometimes. It definitely is a hidden gem not to be missed in this city that is lacking a lot more diversity of food but it is slowly getting better with restaurants like this.
This family owned business is way underrated! The outside doesn't look very inviting but the place is petite, clean and very personal. It makes me want to visit Indonesia everytime I come here and the food, oh the food is unbelievable! Please try it for your own sake. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE.
Delicious! I went on Saturday and wanted to go back today, but they were closed. Food is excellent and is priced reasonably. The service is fantastic. Family owned and it shows they take pride in what they do. It doesn't look like much from the outside but inside is very intimate and clean with an Indonesian flare. Our food was a little cold when it came out but still tasted amazing. Definitely recommend.
We've driven by this place for years buy have never gone in. BIG MISTAKE!
Curiosity got the best of us and we finally went in. Yet another gem hidden on 17th Ave SE. It's a small and cozy restaurant with friendly staff. Our waitress was really helpful and answered all of or questions. We ordered several small dishes and coconut rice to share. We received or food fairly quickly. The portions were a bit small for the price but everything tasted sensational.
So many other dishes on the menu that we still need to try. Can't wait to go back.
One of my favourites in Calgary, the restaurant is small and cozy. The staff are very nice and friendly, I believe this is a family own restaurant and it has a warm atmosphere.
We ordered a lot of small plates and shared everything with sides of rice. The lamb curry, beef satay and beef rendang were great and the favours were amazing.
We finished with a small desert in mango sauce and it was delicious. This place is highly recommended.
Great find, sweet staff and there's a wizard in the kitchen. And am looking forward to checking out more of their menu... and their new location downtown! For my full review check out my blog at the experimental approach dot com :)
Closed between 2 and 4 Most Days and all day Monday. I tried to visit this restaurant the other day, they are closed between 2 and 4.T-H
Went again a week or so later and tried the beef sate and nasi goreng. Both good dishes, great flavours and quite authentic. I took it take out - the person at the counter was very friendly and pleasant.
Awesome little hole in the wall. This place has amazing food. What's more, the prices are amazing as well. Most ethnic restaurants in Calgary try to increase their prices, without even offering an authentic product. Indonesian Kitchen is different. They offer great and delicious food that is very reasonably priced. I had the Nasi Goreng- an Indonesian style fried rice. It was a little too sweet for my taste and I needed some hot sauce to make it work for my palette. I asked the waitress and she gave me some red chilli sauce with chopped green chillies on it- when added to the rice dish it was elevated the flavour of the dish. If you are like me and need your food to be a little spicy, just ask for some hot sauce ;) My bf had the goat curry and it was delicious! It was full of traditional flavors like lime leaves and coconut! Overall this was a great experience. I will be returning in the near future to try more authentic Indonesian dishes. I highly recommend this place to anyone wanting to try a new cuisine. There is ample parking here and it is transit friendly as well.
Very Authentic Flavour. Went here a couple of days ago, and for those of you who don't know - if you're looking for truly authentic Indonesian food, Indonesian Kitchen is the place to go. The presentation of the dishes are awesome, and the quality of the meats are high standard, packed with great flavour. Kaffir Lime may be a little bit cheaper but the quality and authenticity certainly lacks in terms of classic Indonesian cuisine. I've traveled to Indonesia, and Kaffir Lime is more likened to Thai food than anything else.
I'm very happy to have found this small, hidden gem and I've found myself coming back here many times. Definitely try their Ayam Rica Rica as I find the consistency and flavours to be just like back in Indonesia. The Rendang is superb. Coming here always brings back very fond memories and the people there are always warm and friendly.
Tiny place. Huge Flavor. BEEF RENDANG.. I've passed this place so many times without even noticing it. It's a small boring looking spot in the middle of a strip mall but MY GOD am I glad I found it. After seeing the high reviews on here, I figured I had to check it out. We started with the Lumpia Goreng, which is a sort of fried spring roll... but the filling has a flavor all it's own. Love the spices they use. Then I got the Beef Rendang with the Coconut rice. It was absolutely delicious. The cubes of beef were extremely tender, and the sauce was creamy and full of diverse flavors, but not too spicy. The coconut rice with it was perfectly cooked, and had such a delicate coconut flavor. It accented the beef so well. My girlfriends dish was awesome too, but it was quite spicy, so ask the waitress if you're not a fan of heat. The Beef Rendang was very mild in heat though, and would be delicious for anybody. Highly recommend checking this place out. BEEF RENDANG.
So Friendly!. The owners are incredibly kind and welcoming. Definitely try the ginger-based tea...oh.my.god!
Fantastic. Stopped by for takeout last night and I am thrilled that I did. Have missed Indonesian food in Calgary since the place on 14th Street closed, and found this place on urbanspoon when looking to grab something in the area. Lovely people and wonderful food. The Sayap Ayam Bakar, Kari Ayam and Nasi Goreng Special were particular favourites. I will definitely go out of my way to go back here.
Hidden Gem on International Avenue. I've always wanted to try Indonesian Kitchen and I just so happen to go there this weekend! I would like to start off by using that the service here is the best I have had in the entire city. It was so genuine and you can tell that the servers were proud to work here.
If you do get a chance to go (not alot of parking, but lots of side parking). I would recommend that you get the Coconut rice, Special Seafood noodles (sweet, but a nice kick of spices), any dish with chicken (seriously, looking around at the other tables, I could have eaten any of it) and the tofu (toucho) dish.
If you do get the ginger tea, order it early, as it oddly comes after the meal. Its very gingery so be prepared.
Highly recommend to any family, couple, or if you are a sole eater, this place is great as well!
Good Food, Very Small Portions. Came here for dinner. Ordered the Beef Rendang, Green Beans with shrimp, Seafood noodles, and coconut rice. Dishes were very flavourful, although noodles a little too sweet. However, the portion and plate size is TINY for the prices charged. Two of us shared these dishes, and there was no leftovers. I was actually still hungry when we left. The bill was in excess of $45.00. The green bean dish was well over $12.00, with perhaps 8 green beans and 4 small shrimp. Green beans are not that expensive. Service was top notch. However, we cannot see returning here, as there are alot of good restaurants that give you both value and taste. The restaurant is beautiful, but had very few customers. If the restaurant adjusted the portion size to a reasonable one, lots of customers would come.
Indonesian Kitchen is an amazing restaurant, great food, comfortable atmosphere, kind owners and I would highly recommend this place.
Yankee says "makanan enak". Nice little restaurant, tasty food. I had Lamb Satay and it was delicious. They have Tempeh (fermented tofu fried) as an entree but I asked them if I could get a smaller portion to go with my Satay and they gave me a nice helping for $5. Not many places will deviate from the menu like that. I lived in Indonesia for two years and the food was authentic and good. Makanan Enak=nice food.
Delicious & authentic Javanese food. I really enjoyed their tempeh, ayam bakar (grilled chicken), Gule Kambing (lamb curry), satay ayam & satay Kambing (chicken & lamb skewers). If you are a well travelled foodie, I recommend this place.
I recommend everyone to come, the food is amazing and so good! Sambal Goreng Tempeh is the best! The staff are very nice and friendly. The ambience is fabulous with so many gifts from Bali. The prices are affordable and worth every cent. Tasty, yum! One of kind, a gem when it comes to Calgary's food scene. Will be back for sure.
Splendid!!!. Just dropped by Indonesian kitchen for lunch. They have a new lunch menu so I tried the Nasi Padang. It was so tasty and flavorful. It comes with rendang, egg belado(tomato based), mie goreng, steamed rice and curry tofu. It was the best. I will certainly be back for dinner as well.
Spectacular food!. I've been a regular customer to Indonesian Kitchen for a very long time, and I can honestly say that the food is always consistent and authentic. The staff are continuously amazing, attentive and so friendly! Their Mie Goreng is so tasty, and their Sambal dishes are the best.
The Nasi Lemak is very DELICIOUS! You actually can replace the fish with chicken for just $7 which is a very good price; if you have both then it becomes $12. I really have no idea which place NL went to because the staff are so beyond friendly and to the point!
I enjoy this restaurant immensely and urge those to come experience true Indonesian food. I'll continue to come by for great food. :)
Great Meal! Loved It!. Great little restaurant! I've never had Indonesian food so I can't make a comparison, but I loved it! All the dishes we ordered were extremely flavorful and delicious. The meat in the dishes we ordered was moist and tender. No over cooking.
I can see where some folks might feel the dishes were small for the price, however when you eat it "family style" as we did plus add a side of rice, it was more than enough food for everyone. If you like a little "heat" in your food, ask for a little Sambal on the side as that was the best! (ok for some Sambal would be a LOT of heat...ha!)
As for cost, I felt it was well worth the price. I don't mind paying a bit more for food that doesn't taste like it's been cooked in a microwave. The restaurant itself is very small, but that lends itself to a home-like feel. Service was attentive and kind. The decor was great too....added to the ambiance of the meal. Overall I would highly recommend the Indonesian Kitchen. I'd say it's a great food "treasure" for the city of Calgary.
Best Indonesian food I've had since I was last in indonesia
WOW! We're we ever impressed! The food was fantastic, and the staff was incredibly attentive. Best Indonesian in Canada by far.
Amazing food; wonderful staff! Friendly and great atmosphere. Highly recommend!
Lovely people!. Went here for a friend's birthday and really enjoyed the homey and delicious non complicated food. I visited this place after coming home from a big trip around Asia and reminded me of the food I became accustomed to on my trip. The owners and her daughter were there and were so lovely. Would definitely come here again :)

Great Food. Nice Decor. Very friendly service.. We stumbled on this place accidentally and walked in to find a very nicely decorated space. We were greeted by a friendly, smiling face at the door. We tried the Sambal Goreng Udang (Prawns in sweet/hot sauce), Ayam Bakar (BBQ chicken) and Mie Goreng (fried noodles). Everything was delicious. The food takes a while because everything is fresh and made to order. Definitely going back again with friends soon....
Tasty/Authentic. Very diverse amount of dishes to try. The food is superb, and the atmosphere is very friendly. The Sambal Goreng Ayam, Soto Ayam and Nasi Goreng are all beautifully made.
And while it's true that they make Indian food as well, the flavour is just as excellent. Their Butter chicken and Jalebi are to die for.
Amazing. The food was excellent. I had the kroket, rendang, sate sapi, and cocunut rice.
These were amazing flavors and this is a welcome addition to the Calgary restaurant scene.
They also have some amazing Indian food and it was nice to have a combination between Indian and indonesian as I has some samosas as well.
Great job to the owners
Good Food but confusing identity. I love Indonesian/Malaysian food. Coming from Richmond Hill Ontario where Restaurant Malaysia (top restaurant on my list) is located. I was very excited to find a Indonesian restaurant in Calgary. To be honest The food was good but not very good. Also I was disappointed when I got their because they restaurant serve both Indian food and Indonesian. I am not a big fan on one kitchen serving two totally different cuisine. I will still be visiting this place as lack of other options. It would be nice if the owner actually turns this in to a Indonesian place.
One could argue that Indonesian and Malaysian food are similar right? Well, for arguments sake, let’s say so, because I’m comparing everything to the delicious Malaysian lunch we had at Banana Leaf Tropical Cuisine. The bar is set high, can Indonesian Kitchen keep up?

...Starting off with an order of Lemper Ayam (steamed traditional sticky rice with chicken), we savoured the flavours of the chicken hinted with lemongrass that was stuffed inside the sticky rice, and couldn’t wait for the next dish to arrive.
I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted to try here, but something different than the every day usual.
I’m on a mission to try all the southeast Asian restaurants in town. Well, mostly the Malaysian and Indonesian ones. Indonesian Kitchen is a small family run restaurant located on the ethically diverse International Avenue. Not much to look at from the outside, but the interior is warmly decorated. There are also shelves of crafts from Indonesia and a small selection of dry groceries. If I were more familiar with Indonesian cooking, I would have picked up some. We started with the fried cassava. So good. Think of it as a spicy french fry. The chicken curry was up next. It was pretty average; I definitely expected more of a flavor hit. The mie goreng satisfied my craving for carbs after climbing. It was slightly sweet, which I was also craving. The shrimp chips and fried egg were a nice touch. Surprisingly, the tempeh was my favorite dish. Tempeh is a fermented soy product. I’ve cooked it before, and found the taste a little hard to swallow. But this version tasted good and combi
The most authentic Malaysian cuisine I have ever had the pleasure of tasting since being in Canada. The place is a small family style restaurant and the place was packed at closing, but the service is fast and courteous. The portion size is very generous and food was top notch for the price. I would gladly return to this place again to fulfil my Malaysian food cravings.
Friendly service. Food arrived quickly. Generous portions. Very tasty. If you're not a fan of chili peppers in the sauce, you can have the sauce on the side.
I come here once in awhile I think it's a bit heavy to have too often but it's awesome. Super spicy so be ready for that. It's often not busy so it's great for a quick meal.
Authentic and delicious!
As a Malaysian I highly recommend this place! The flavor is 90% close to what I’ve had back in Malaysia. The Hainanese Chicken Rice is very authentic (don’t let the pictures fool you, it’s just the restaurant doesn’t have the best lighting). The chicken is very flavorful! Just like Jesus, tender and mild. Nasi Lemak is very good too! The sambal is the best I’ve had in Canada. Will come again to try out other dishes for sure!
Great food, great service, great restaurant. We came after the lunch rush, but the restaurant was still full. It was definitely worth the short wait. They asked us to wait outside and called when the table was ready (very good). They inspected our Vaccine Passports, and everyone else that came in after (very good). They cleaned thoroughly between guests, and spaced the tables out really well. Thanks for that.
The meals came out very quickly. We had the Seafood Laksa and the Hainanese Chicken & Rice. Both were wonderful. The Laksa was spicy, rich and delicious, with big chunks of fish, squid, shrimp, fish balls, tofu. I am a big Laksa fan, and this one was awesome. Big dish too, could easily be shared by two people. The Hainanese Chicken was perfectly cooked, steaming and tender. Such a beautiful dish. Way too big for my wife, we took home half for dinner later.
Service was friendly and fast, the two young men that served us were terrific. The room is cute and spotlessly clean, prices are very good. We will be back to try the rest of the menu. Thanks!
The food was delicious, although some of the party found it too spicy.
Service is friendly and quick. The place does only accept debit card or cash, and therefore can be an inconvenience for some.
Authentic Malaysian food that is full of flavour and delicious! The seafood laksa is my go-to, along with the roti and Hainanese Chicken Rice.
Greeted with plastic tumblers of boiling water, just as if we were in Malaysia. Nasi Lemak. Just like in Malaysia except for the bonus that it came with coconut curry chicken! Milk Tea just like I remembered it. Perfect breakfast.
