Review Jackie's Thai - Calgary

Dan Smith
We enjoyed our meal here very much. Great flavours, vegetables cooked perfectly and decent portions. A little on the pricier side for Thai but was worth it. Service was attentive and we liked it was smaller and quiet. Coconut rice didn’t have a strong coconut flavour was our only complaint really.

We had dinner here. Ordered Pad Thai and cashew chicken. They were not flavorful and the food was definitely not worth the price. The dumplings, however, were nice.

What a cute place!! The owner and staff were outstanding and the food was excellent! I’d recommend the salad rolls and the pad tai - everything was so delicious and well presented- just wow wow wow!!!

I’ve been passing by this place for a while and finally decided to try it today with my husband for an early Valentines dinner. We had the drunken noodles which were fairly good! We add spice to it! You can have a 1 star, 2 star or 3 star. We chose 2 star. It was the right amount of spicy. Not too spicy where it masks the flavours of the veggies and delightful sauces, just the right amount. We also had corn fritters which were like corn patties deep fried. It wasn’t too bad but they had a lot of other interesting appys too! Like the dumpling flower, I will try that next time! Our server was great too! I would recommend this place for Thai! It was such a lovely experience. Will definitely come back!

Large portions for a great price. Would recommend to anyone looking to try Thai food. I ordered vegetable spring rolls the presentation was so cute has sauce for dipping and was delicious. Also had prawn sweet and sour with coconut rice. Healthy options lots of veggie and vegan options as well.
Sarah Campbell
Really enjoyed our meal here, the staff was friendly and attentive. Everything was very flavorful and authentic. Would recommend making reservations on weekends.

Great food and amazing service. They go above and beyond to really make sure you are comfortable and are having a great time. Love this place.

The food was great and full of flavor! Service was great! Every time we eat here it's been very good. My wife is Thai and she loved everything! We will keep coming back.
Casandra Daze
Every dish is delicious, I've had each at least 20 times. Flavours are authentic and satisfying, I actually feel like I'm eating properly when I eat something from Jackie Thai. The service is warm, friendly and fast. And I've recently started ordering their spring rolls for events - it's incredible how fast they disappear as soon as they're laid out on the table.

Very good Thai curry and Thai Ice coffee Jackie's very good for quick lunch in food court So testy

After many, many visits to the Eau Claire food court to enjoy Jackie's at lunch, we had them cater our sons's first birthday, which was a primarily adult party of 15 people. They did a fantastic job, bringing everything we needed, as well as the appropriate heating unit to keep everything piping hot, and picked it all up the next day. We added the spring rolls and the saté chicken to the meal, which made for a tonne of food to go along with the 2 different salads, Pad Thai and 3 curries with rice for everybody. If you're looking for something different when hosting a group function, work lunch and learn, etc, that's delicious, doesn't leave you slaving in the kitchen, very affordable, and different than your regular pizza options, give Jackie's a call. It'll be well received by your guests! Thanks Thor and Jackie for helping make our little guys birthday a relaxing and enjoyable one.

Authentic Thai food for a great price, love to come here and eat while my kid runs around at the playground next to it.

Only wish it were closer! Missing the nourishing food almost as much as the chefs!

If you are in Calgary, you simply MUST have Jackie's Thai, so delicious
RJ
I love this place. Don't be fooled by its unassuming location in a mall. The food is fabulous. Red, green and all other sorts of curries and pad thai. Great thai iced tea too. Right price. Friendly, family run by Jackie & Thor. Definitely worth making it part of your weekly lunch routine!

It must have been fate to visit Jackie’s Thai in Eau Claire. I was just in Thailand in November and after adjusting back to my Canadian diet I was craving Thai food again!. When out of the blue, I was asked if I wanted to come down and try something off Jackie’s menu. I went with the tried and true, Green Papaya Salad. I had never had papaya salad until I went to Thailand and after eating it probably every other day I was definitely wanting another opportunity to eat it again.
Jomar
Jackie’s Thai is an underrated gem hidden in the confines of Eau Claire Market! It’s not a sit down restaurant, but instead it reflects the street food stalls you would see in Thailand. They offered all the vegetarian options including the vegetarian pad thai, veggie yellow curry and vegetarian som tam (green papaya salad). I love that were really so nice to accommodate my vegan needs (i.e. no fish sauce). All I have to say is that the food was extremely tasty, and my favourite is the vegetarian pad thai (but som tam was a close second).

Had lunch at Jackie's Thai in Eau Claire Market today. The Thai Basil Chicken and the Yellow Curry Chicken served over rice, and a diet A&W Root Beer. The Basil chicken was hot, really hot (as advertised) without the heat obscuring the flavors of the chicken and veggies in the mix. The Yellow Curry Chicken was mellow and flavourful - nicely balancing the heat of the Basil chicken.Surprisingly, the A&W Diet Root Beer was as good as a cola for also helping to mitigate the heat - and mixed well with the flavours of both chicken dishes. The service was pleasant and efficient - cheerful - and the food was as good as ever.

The people at this place are very nice but it is not the type of Thai food that fits me. Most of their curries are too spicy for me maybe that is real Thai food ... but I am sorry this is not for me. However if you are someone who loves really spicy food, then you should try this place. It is also very reasonably priced.
Famished Feline
Very flavorful 3 item combo.. I told the lady that Ive never eaten there. She promptly brought out sample cups and I got to try a little of everything before deciding. I got a really nice full plate for $13. I've even had left overs. The only thay bothered me was that their cc machine was not taking payment.
Herb
Epic. I haven't eaten a lot of Thai but the green curry with chicken and bamboo shoots was amazing. I cant believe it took me this long to try it and I cant wait to go back. The home options looked really interesting I will have to try that too.

One of my favorite places to get Thai food either to sit down and eat, or as take out. Service is great as they go above and beyond for their customers. The food is delicious and very authentic! Very reasonably priced Thai food, the cheapest in all of Calgary I think!
Konnymi
The food I had was so yummy! very authentic just like how my mom makes it! The service was great after we had paid for everything, I was talking to my friend asking what I should get for my babies. the lady over heard and gave me a small bowl of pad Thai for them! Prices are very cheap compared to other Thai restaurants. New go to spot for Thai! Must try!!
Justin Kettle
Great takeaway option here. Delicious thai food quick. Mrs had the beef panang which was creamy and full of flavour. I grabbed the spicy basil chicken which was super spicy which they warned but I love spice. It was perfect spice and tasty. Recommend this place for sure

In the summer I make the trek from 9ave down to Jackie's. Their curries are delicious, the soup is awesome. They are friendly , quick and the best part for a downtown lunch...affordable. Great tasty Thai. Always a line up. That says it right there.
LiveToEat
This is definitely my favorite place thus far in Calgary for Thai cuisine. I am addicted to their chicken pad thai. The toppings on the side add extra zing to something already delicious. The owners are very friendly and personable. I often go out of my way to get a meal or two because it is so worth it in my opinion.
Dan Lepkowski
Man, the whooping 91% intisced me to come check this place out. Tried the green curry and pad Thai and all k ha e to say it was awesome. It hit the spot and I got exactly what I wanted. I may not be a big curry conasure but I really enjoyed the green curry and the pad Thai was a good side dish to the curry. Perfect little place to grab a relatively cheap bite to eat that is full of flavour!!
Mr_dyip
You got to be kidding.. We tasted a few items to try it out according to reviews .. We didn't even finish 25 % of each dish .BLAHHH. Some people who rated this place above average must be relatives or friends or just don't know anything about quality.
Amanda
Just the WORST. Maybe those who have had a pleasant experience eating here haven't gone for lunch on a Saturday. All of our friends dishes were clearly a day old and not fresh at all. Rice was soggy and the noodles in the Pad Thai were not even correct. The lid for the Chiang mai soup I ordered broke as soon as we took it to the car because of the heat and cheap quality. But also they piled two other containers on top of it. I didn't even get to try my dish because of the chucks of plastic floating around. But based on the whole experience and with all of the other options in Calgary, I would never give this place a second chance. BOOH!
Vainsyl66
Sylvain & Watsana. Its very surprising to have such quality Thai food in Calgary, warm employees and owners, good customer services, passionate about there cooking and dedicated to there customers.
You can taste the freshness in every bite.
Me and my wife strongly recommend Jackie's Thai.
Xrzs410
This is the disgusting soupless noodle soup they gave me for lunch, YUCK!. Seriously, where is the soup? You might as well call it mashed noodle! All noodle are like mush, yuck! I came all the way here on a cold day for a bowl of noodle soup, you gave me this big blog of @#!@#%@#? I have to take the noodle out to the side lid and it is still impossible to eat, well trash it goes!
Colleen
I went to Jackie's for lunch today and had the yellow curry with vegetables. It was good and had nice favour, but was rather unremarkable given the great praise others have bestowed upon it.
I would not recommend making a special trip for it.
Af
Shocked this has such a high rating. Had the green curry and I was not very impressed. It was salty and bland.
Lev Kramar
Very disappointing for a 91% (at the time) rated place. Green curry was too salty rather than the authentic sweet/spicy taste. Had too many bamboo shoots in it, which were also salty.
Htkc
Lovely food and people. Love the veggie curry! Don't forget to add the toppings (near the cashier).

I always stock up on the frozen curries when I have to work overtime. Quick, economical and tasty!!!

Jackie and her husband are such kind people. They put in a lot of love into the food.
Ad.gazzard
LOVE this place!!. I HIGHLY recommend this place. I eat here for lunch A LOT. It is hard to find a delicious lunch in the $5 range downtown - let alone amazing thai food, but this place delivers. I usually get the yellow curry veggies, just for the reason that it is veggie. I have tried the red curry with bamboo (awesome although I haven't seen it there in a while), the basil beef, the green curry and the red curry with chicken. They are all soooo good.

The only complaint that I would have is that when I order the yellow curry with veggies, they are a little heavy on the rice and light on the veggies. Like maybe 2 broccoli pieces, 3 pieces of zucchini and 2 sweet potato chunks. For some reason this doesn't happen with other dishes as often ( recently had the red curry chicken and got a reasonable amount of chicken and loads of pineapple). I also always ask for extra sauce because sometimes they don't include enough to saturate the rice.

It would also be nice if they had another veggie option (or rotated the type of veggie option so it wasn't always yellow curry).
Alex Ciaciura-Homeniuk
Don't understand the hype. Tasted like the poor noodles I try to make at home. It was cold and stale and the chicken was over cooked. Not coming here again.
Travisd
Can't beat the heat!. This place does absolutely everything right and once you've stopped by you'll be coming back again and again. The food is well worth going out of the way for, the staff are fantastic and friendly people who go out of their way to tell you as much as you need to know about the various dishes and ingredients on offer. I love very hot food and Jackie's doesn't pull and punches in the heat/spice department either, which I love! It's one of those places where you're actually happy to give them your money, which is a very rare experience for me in this city of hype and frequent poor value. I hope they stick around for a while. They deserve to do well and have my business and support as long as they're around.
Kkuls67
Very good!. I went here on a regular basis when I lived downtown. Everything was authentic and flavorful. I was never disappointed!
Sploogeonfood
Best thai in the city. Had the green curry, sampled the red curry. Authentic thai food! Extremely surprised to find thai food that is edible in calgary, let alone high quality at a good price. Was in australia for a year (right by thailand), and there is more thai food then any other restaurant. This is very comparable. Looking at a guy order tacotime 2 stores down... God calgary is uncultured.
Aj
Service and food is too awesome. Hard to believe this is food court food. The chicken basil is very spicy but has really good flavours. Try the tea too!!
Kasia
This is some of the best Thai food in Calgary, on par with restaurants but with food court prices. The Ox tail soup and Yellow Veg Curry are winners in my opinion but there has yet to be an item that did not have great flavours and exceeded my expectations.
Sylvs
Why didn't I try sooner?!!!. Ok. I just had the first two bites of the Pad Thai & Yellow Curry Chicken combo. SO GOOD. This is amazingly good and you would never know it was fast food Thai.

I will be having this again.
IntoTheWild
Always a favorite!. A tiny little gem in a hidden little corner of Eau Claire food court.

Don't be fooled by its humble appearance, the food is fresh, authentic, and most excellent, not to mention affordable.

I'm a regular patron after my weekly river runs, having learned the hard way that Pad Thai BEFORE a run is ill advised.

The reviews speak for themselves. Highly recommend.
A. Chan
Decent tasting. Not as good as White Elephant - but they make up for it with their value and the vast amount of toppings you can put on:
hot chili oil (or pepper flakes), cilantro, peanuts, onions, limes, and best of all FRIED GARLIC. yummmmmm so good.

Ordered - green curry chicken with bamboo, yellow curry chicken, red curry chicken, curry beef with jackfruit.

Red curry chicken and beef were least favored.
Green curry chicken was good but a little salty
yellow curry chicken was very good.

One other thing - I've had non stop thai smelling flatulence the day after. =P

Better Thai than any sit down resto. I've tried many Thai restaurants in Calgary and none of them had the combination of great food, at a great price, with amazing service. Hands down the best Thai I have had in Calgary!
Alex
My review of Jackies Thai is simple: delicious food at a cheap price. Eat here if you like those two to things.
Barebuns1
Simply the best place to eat.. I found Jackie's Thai quite by accident. I was in Calgary for the Calgary Marathon. I ate here on a Saturday. I had the Yellow Chicken Curry. It was amazing. I will give it a 10/10. I got to meet Jackie and one of her staff. The friendliest staff. All other restaurants could learn a lesson from here. I took a couple of friends back on Monday for some more great meals. I had planned on the Chiang Mai noodles but everything looks so good. I ended up trying a Curried vegetarian dish. This dish was also out of this world. I am willing to drive 250km just for this restaurant. AAA
Mermaid
It was good and service was very friendly. Prices are decent. Pad thai does not taste like usual peanuty kind, more soy saucy. It was okay but prefer regular type. Flavours on everything are bold and full. Especially enjoyed the yellow chicken curry over rice. Delicious coconut flavour and yummy veggies.

Downtown's Best Quick eat. I am a personal trainer at Goodlife Fitness Eau Claire and I go down to pick up some delicious Jackies Thai food all the time. It is a low cost, but still at really BIG portion sizes. Not to mention it is all authentically cooked Thai food. It is 'fast food' but the food really is restaurant quality.

Healthy, high variety, and really nice people are what I love about it.

While you are down at Eau Claire come for a work out with Ty if you are interested in Personal Training.
Cell: 403-863-7875

Excellent food for price. I have been craving Jackie's Thai since I first tried it. I have been back half a dozen times in the last month. The best dish is the green curry with chicken. I would recommend this place to anyone! Best cheap Thai food around.
Jocs
If your are craving for it. I drove specifically to downtown just to try Jackie's thai. I would say it is ok if it Sunday and can't wait until White Elephant is open. I did not like the red curry with bamboo shoot. I liked the beef penang. green curry was so so... pad thai I've had better. So if you like White elephant , Jackie thai will make you regret not going to the NE and booking a reservation for thai food. But if you have never been to white elephant, jackie thai is the closes to eating in Thailand the fast food way. It is cheap to eat here. Buy 3 for take out and get 1 free.

Absolutely delicious. This salad is made upon order and it is one of the tastiest salads I have ever had - all thanks to the homemade salad dressing that Jackie has created. It's more of a savory vinaigrette with a ton of sesame seeds and possibly sesame oil, and it was so delicious that I had to walk up to Jackie afterwards to give my compliments to the chef. You get a decent amount of chicken chunks, all topping over iceberg lettuce, cabbage, carrots, red peppers, grape tomatoes and snap peas... I am still tasting the salad dressing in my mouth as I'm typing this. I can't wait to go back and eat this again!
M.Matm
I love it!. I just got the Red Curry chicken pineapple, its so Delicious!!!! Thank you Jackie's Thai for the great food and service.
Fattycatty
Meh. Pad thai was dark and tasted like soy sauce. curry was ok. had better thai is calgary for reasonable price.
Jen
Good, cheap eats. I've had the chance to try quite a bit on the rotating menu. The pad thai is done really well, and fresh. There's lemon wedges, cilantro, peanuts, etc for garnish as desired. Their curries are good - but the differences in taste between the sauces (ex. green vs. red) are extremely subtle. Mostly, it's all very similar because of the predominantly coconut-based sauce. For those who like spice - their Chili oil sauce is one of the best I have had in Calgary, and has a slight garlic taste to it.

However, their food is extremely extremely rich compared to their competitors. There's also a considerable amount of sauce (compared to other Thai restaurants that offer take out). I usually get take out, which comes in great clear containers. However, when they spoon the contents into the container, about 1/2-2/3 is the meat and veggies/potatoes. Near the top, their last few scoops are all sauce (at least 1/3 of the container). I end up having to strain out all of the sauce when I get home - if not, and I leave it in the fridge, the sauce becomes super thick when cold and sticks to all the meat...then it's harder to get rid of it before reheating (don't want to be eating all those excess saturated and trans fats!) If they could tweak their recipe to make it just a tad more healthy, I'd be back more often.

I work at eau Claire market I come here every single day for lunch, first time got me hooked and no other restaurant around here can even compare.
Jure Urank
Awesome authentic Thai food that you don't need to go in a restaurant for. Plus everything is around $8. Love it!
T
I like it. Big fan of the food. I can eat it everyday!
Tangsta
Overrated. I love Thai food, and after reading numerous good reviews (100% like rating) on UrbanSpoon, I had to try Jackie's Thai.

Unfortunately, it fell very short of expectations.

My wife and I shared the Papaya salad, Pad Thai, and Yellow Chicken Curry.

The papaya salad was pretty good, full of authentic ingredients... exactly the same ingredients that we used when we made papaya salad in a cooking course in Bangkok. But sadly the flavors were muted, it lacked the pungent, spicy flavor of a proper Thai dish.

The chicken curry wasn't very noteworthy, decent flavors, but full of carrots and potatoes and not much chicken.

The Pad Thai was probably the biggest disappointment. The shrimps were big and cooked well, but the noodles were dry, bland, and strangely dark as though they were coated with dark soy sauce (which does not belong in Pad Thai).

I wonder whether it was an off day (we went on a weekend) or if they've gone downhill due to a voucher promotion (which I didn't even know about until I went there), but the food just didn't seem to match the past reviews. I won't be back, there's much better Thai food (fast food and otherwise) to be had elsewhere.
CgyMom
I'll be back!. So glad I tried this place. It was kind of in the corner, so I didn't spot it right away, but I'm glad I did!
Food tasted fantastic, had pad thai with shrimp and the spicy beef with rice. The portion was perfect, there was nothing left on my plate!
If you want just a quick bite of Thai this is the perfect place, and they are very willing to let you try a little taste before you buy!
Ronald Mc
I am impressed. The food is fresh and fantastic. It could be just me, but my serving size could be a bit larger.
Jon Sedore
Great Flavor. Great curries with authentic Thai flavors. Fast and friendly service. One of the best spots in Eau Claire for a delicious lunch
Jeff Snow
Unbelievable! Everything is so fresh with so much flavor! Do yourself a favor and stop in!
P_petite
Recommended tasty Thai food at reasonable price.. I am Thai and what bothers me the most is pricey Thai food in Calgary, there is an exception for Jackie's Thai. The food portion here is big with reasonable price. Jackie often offered to make Pad Thai fresh from the stove for me. She is too modest for her creative and great cooking ability.
Eric M
Thai Heaven. I was referred to this restaurant by a family member who had discovered it before I did. Wow! The food was unbelievably good. The green currie was my favorite. Everything was fresh, and prepared as though you were in a beautiful Thai restaurant having dinner. This isn't food court food. It's worthy of any Thai restaurant I've been to, and I would predict that some day we'll be seeing a new Jackie's Thai sit down restaurant where we can go for an amazing evening meal. I look forward to it. You gotta try this place. Congratulations!

I had the Thai Chicken Salad. Fresh and very tasty. Can't wait to go back and try some of the tasty looking hot foods
JWong
BIG portions!. Came here for lunch the other day with my coworkers and it was wonderful!!! The prices are lower than other thai restaurants in the city and it tastes authentic, not the overly greasy pad thai North American establishments are grown accustomed to!
ShotCaller
Yes!. Everyone should make a trip out of their way to this wonderful restaurant/cubby hole. The food just cannot be beat! Don't be fooled by the modest decor. This is top quality food disguised as a fast food restaurant
Ella
I'm in LOVE!. Yesterday while waiting for movie to start, accidently I found Jackie's Thai and seriously, I AM IN LOVE! Great food at the great price! Best of all, you can take some home as they sell dishes in frozen format. Really, really great find. To everyone who likes Thai food, go there and try yourself! You will NOT be dissapointed.

Delicious. Incredible value!

Never Disappoints. I created an account just to share my review bc the quality of food from Jackie's Thai is worth the time. I ordered to go this round and once again I'm blown away. Everything is fresh and flavourful... and extremely reasonably priced for the value you get. Her Chicken Thai salad deserves a special mention - it is OUTSTANDING and everything else I've tried delicious. This place is a gem in the heart of downtown.

Craving. We came to Jackie's for my sis-in-law's birthday last night, our family has a soft spot for Thai food, and we were not disappointed by any means. In fact I woke up this morning wishing I had bought some take-out because I am definitely craving more today! Definitely high quality, authentic Thai food at a GREAT price, and if you have kids, great location right across from the indoor playground!
Elisa Park Kim
Authentic Thai for low price. Must have once a week. Incredible!
Louise Wong
Good food. Jackie's Thai food is the best Thai food in town. I've tried other Thai foods but its nothing like Jackie's Thai food, especially her papaya salad.
Lorraine Swift
Very fresh, very spicy, very delicious.
Blackdynamo
Don't let the fact that it is in a food court fool you. The prices are awesome, and the food is spectacular. The service can't be beat because its a start up and jacky is doing the cooking herself. Definitely recommend, you will not be disappointed.
JaBlam
I'm shocked by how delicious this place is. If you're in the market for some quick Thai then I recommend this booth. The Penang, spicy beef and chicken pineapple were all fantastic. Interesting couple run the place.

The green curry wasn't that great, but the rest is great

Alloy alloy alloy! Which in Thai means really really good! Tried the Tom Kha Gai Noodles (Chiangmai Noodles), Pad Thai and Papaya Salad. All three were really great, especially the Tom Kha Gai Noodles. I haven't had a meal like this in a long time since I moved to Calgary and for those who are of Thai decent like me, this place will give the comfort you need. Also, I would like to add that the folks here are really really great and easy to talk too. They're introducing Thai food that's really eaten in Thailand. It's not fancy, but believe me it's the real thing and you won't regret it.
Tim
Authentic tasty Thai food, always fresh and perfectly prepared plus a great range, generous service and everything with a smile.
I will become a regular HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Audrey
Jackie is a fantastic cook!. I first met Jackie when my family (2 kids and husband) stayed with her and her family in Thailand 3 years ago. She cooked for us every night and I cherish my memories of jumping on the back of her motorbike and shopping at the Thai markets for ingredients to make supper. She was a great cook then and Calgary is lucky to have her now! Jackis's kitchen is a great choice for authentic Thai.
Darryl
Fab Thai!. I have been going to Jackie's regularly since the week they opened and have sampled pretty much every item on the rotating menu. I can honestly say that his is some of the best Thai that I have ever had in Calgary!

I love all the curries and stir-frys and _almost_ all the soups (because I am not used to one of the recipes that has all the whole leaf and chunks of lemongrass stalk, but it was still delish!).

This place alone is worth popping into Eau Claire Market for (which is easily accessible via the central bike paths or use the cheap $2 pkg after 5PM / on wknds )

=-D
April Dawn
Tasty. Really enjoyed the Thai Chicken salad (which was made fresh).. and I like that there is a interesting choice of drinks. The service was really good as well. Definitely will visit again!
Sandra
Tasty Thai, easy on the wallet. At last, not only Eau Claire Market food court got a new food outlet, not only they now have a good Thai place, they have an excellent one. I have been there 2 to 3 times a week since they opened, have tried most of their dishes and I haven't found anything that I did not like. It's not good, it's AWESOME! Simple, FRESH, lots of flavours, and enough heat to make it nice without burning your mouth off! Small portions are very decent, regular size ones are quite substantial! And everything is very reasonnably priced. Surprisingly, the selection of pop drink is also interesting! And the staff is friendly and efficient. It makes lunch time in a food court very pleasant. I hope they're in for the long run!
Chris
Great Thai. Me and a friend tried Jackie's Thai today. We really enjoyed the food, nice and spicy and fresh. We will be going back!
Jason
Scrumptious!. Delicious food, friendly service and big portions. . I can't wait to go back. This replaces peters burgers by a long shot. Jackie changes the menu weekly. Excited to see what's next!
Cathy Mathieson
This place will become a habit for me! Had a beef curry and then went back for a chicken dish! Jackie is from Thailand and her food is delicious!
Miss Foodie
Jackie’s Thai is located in the food court of Eau Claire Market and serves up authentic Thai fare. Jackie, the owner, spent years in Thailand cooking for students and teaching cooking classes. After reading rave reviews about it from this post on the local Chowhound board, I was really excited to try

Big Pan meals for under $7 at Sunterra Market We briefly interrupt the Colorado road trip to bring you this lengthy post from my hometown of Calgary, Alberta (that’s in Canada for you American readers). Calgary has a boatload of “middle-class” millionaires, many who toil in the city’s behemoth oilpatch. When they’re not zooming off at 130 kph to their weekend condos in Canmore and Invermere, B.C. or the ski slopes of Lake Louise, they’re heading for brunch, a power lunch or a fashionably-late dinner at one of the trendy, chef-driven new restaurants that keep popping up in Calgary. Which is a long-winded way of saying restaurants are generally rather pricy, and a cheap-eats meal is considered anything less than $20. Well, for the benefit of penny-pinching road warriors and residents alike, I’ve scoured the city for what I call bargain-basement eats—tasty, filling and generally quick meals for less than $10. Yes, these are mostly one-course offerings, often served on disposable plates an

But boy, this was a good [oxtail] soup. This is the reason for me to go back to Jackie’s Thai!

Advertised as Calgary’s best Thai food under $10.00, I would say for lighter appetites, your meal may be even less than that estimated amount. L and I ordered the combination set for two ($19.99), which includes any four of their dishes of the day. We ordered: Thai Basil Chicken; Yellow Curry Vegetables; Pad Thai; and Red Curry Beef. We received two big plates of rice to go with our four dishes. As well, we ordered a freshly made papaya salad. The dishe

I chose the Yellow Veggie Curry. It was simple, the flavor was great, it wasn’t too spicy and the veggies were fresh and still crisp. We like crisp veggies! I wish that there had been more curry and less rice, that’s my only complaint.
