Review Noodle King - Calgary

Doug Schneider { * hecschneider * }
In terms of Vietnamese Restaurants in Calgary, this one ranked mid range in my opinion. The place was clean, service was quick and the food was decent. I might consider returning here in the future but only if I was in the area, and in the mood for this type of lunch. However I wouldn't plan a special trip here. Not a big attraction to me at all.

Phenomenal food! We ordered a vermicelli dish with one of the best spring rolls we’ve ever had and my the pho sate! Delicious! Highly recommend.

Best Vietnamese restaurant in my opinion and I've tried many! The marinate on their pork (pork vermicelli dish) is amazing! It's charred but still has a little sweetness to it. I also think they have the best chicken Satay noodle soup.

#21... happens to be my favorite number and the number of this EPIC VERSION OF PHO SATE. SUPER PEANUT-Y & COCONUT-Y. Definitely come and try it. I can definitely understand what the hypes about!

I waited 4.5 years to have there amazing beef and peanut noodle soup(was literally dreaming about it) , after i had it … my eyes started watering… probably from that extra spices I added…so to the question how good it is , my ( and I’ll point out word MY) answer is this ,-“ Every time i finish a A bowl of that soup im thinking of going to a washroom to throw up just that i could fit another one in.” ( sorry for being Gross but that’s how much I love it) Place itself is clean and cosy, ladies who work there, might seem to be loud at the first look , but they are very friendly, kind and will take care of you! Definitely recommend to try it out ! P.S sorry if i made grammar mistakes, English is not my first language :/

Best Peanut Sate Beef Pho Soup you'll ever have!!!! I've been coming here for over 6 years and the staff know who you are, what you want, and make a delicious meal. I'm a weekly regular here.

Ok so this one I have to explain. 1. They have the best pho broth in town. I am particularly about my pho. 2. I was dissatisfied with their take out. Since I enjoyed the dine in, I decided to order take out a week later. 3. The take out portions are sooo small compared to the competition. 4. Food is delicious, however you are receiving a better value dinning in than take out.

This is a good place to have a, quick lunch. Services are fast and efficient. The food taste amazing and the portions are properly sized for a single individual.

Best Beef Sate in Calgary by a mile, it’s a fusion with Coconut Milk so it’s not traditional, but you’ll be hard pressed to find a better Vietnamese dish in Calgary. I’ve eaten the Beef State at literally every other “best” Vietnamese place in Calgary, don’t even bother saying you’ve had better.

The satay was made with coconut milk and really tasty but not too spicy. The vegetarian spring rolls were good but a little too mushy inside for me. Overall atmosphere is alright at lunch time but otherwise a little sketchy. Friendly service.

Sate beef Pho is amazing and different from all the rest! Keeps me coming back, a few times a month. The rest of the menu is the same-old Vietnamese that you get everywhere.
Busy on weekdays between 12-1 get there early or later..

Went here for lunch and it was not overly busy. Food was average and the decor is a bit out dated and the place is quite dark. Don't think I will be back any time soon ..

We had a takeout and we tried the deep fried wantons, beef satay, shrimp stir fried chowmein and beef fried rice. The wantons were nice and crispy. The food wasn't hot. Liked the fried rice. The food lacked salt which made it a bit tasteless.
What's Good
I've been frequenting Noodle King about once a week for the past few years, each time looking to satisfy my Asian comfort food craving. First off, the one lady (I can't remember her name) will take your table's order for 10 (even with modifications to your dish) and nail it each time. It seems like the staff really takes pride in and from what I've learned, they are a legitimately hard working family operation. Somewhere I'm glad to spend my lunch money.

Also, It doesn't hurt that the food is consistently satisfying. Their best seller is the Satay Beef Noodle Pho. I have about 3-4 other go to dishes that are pretty unique to Noodle King. The Bun Bo Hue, Noodle King Special, Beef Stew with Noodles, and the Noodle King Special Rice Vermicelli bowl. They are really generous with the amount of protein/vegetables for each dish as well as accommodating for whatever type of noodle suits your taste/texture. Their Banh Canh (Thick rice noodle) is uniquely delicious and I have yet to find it anywhere else in the city. Be sure to beat the lunch hour rush (noon) if you don't want to be waiting for a table. Also if you are there enough, the ladies will probably remember your favourite dish!

Really good beef satay and seafood satay! Service sucks but the noodle is still worth it. It has a nice peanuty broth. I must have this at least once a month.

Located just off of 32nd Avenue on 23rd Street in the N.E. (in the same strip mall as Thai Boat), this hidden gem of a Vietnamese restaurant is my friend's favorite in this area. I think it is because her family knows the owners, and the food is pretty good here. This is my and my friend's default restaurant when we want to get together for lunch or dinner. We have been coming here a few times a year since they first open at this location.

Love this place, I believe they used to be the owners of noodle world on 17 se. Consistent dishes always get #61. Highly recommended for Vietnamese if you are in the area

I get takeout from noodle king about once a month and I've always been happy with the dishes. The restaurant is busy at lunch and if you order takeout be sure to order it by 11:45 to avoid a long wait. The soups are delicious as well as the vermicelli and rice dishes.
Me Want Food
Excellent food. I had the vegetable rice noodle soup and my husband and kids had the grilled pork. We all raved about our food. They also served the kids food with smaller dishes and fun spoons. I would definitely recommend this place for families or anyone really.
Hungryguy321
Best Pho I've had yet.. quick service.food is always on point . the lady's working there are always very nice and helping . I am starting to become a regular because the food is so good . Their Viet subs are good too

SO SAD. I usually get the light and crispy, battered salt and pepper squid. I got some today, and you changed it. Instead of the light batter, I was given gross squid, covered in some sort of coating that was not even crispy, or cooked correctly, that was DEFINITELY NOT what I was expecting. I'm so sad, I was craving this like crazy and this is one of my favorite treats. If you change a recipe can you let your customers know? I'm so disappointed. Definitely not the same salt and pepper squid you used to make.

Usually come here often for lunch, the staff are very nice and we get seated right away. Food is served quick and I'd recommend the seafood Banh canh, cooked perfectly!
Tkhuynh
Pho is average, seems like they cook the noodles for too long.... The seafood Banh canh is really good! The broth and everything is very tasty

If you like thick soup with chunks.... I personally did not enjoy my satay chicken soup. First of all, I got take out and they sent me off with RAW red meat. Gross. Then when I called they could barely understand me. I went back and the lady was apologitic but she should have reembursed me. The actual soup was almost white. It was thick and had ted chunks in it. I've never had red chunks in my satay soup before. Lastly, they don't use VERMECELL NOODLES IN THE SOUP!! I think it's egg noodles but they're gross. If you want good satay chicken soup go to Hung Viet in crowfoot /Ranchlands.

Beef Satay Soup ..Nom. Incedibly flavourful. Rich and delicious broth. Takes how most places serve pho to the next level!!

I tried noodle King today and I am craving it again now!

Good food; dodgy service. Came here to grab lunch and it took way to long for us to get our order in and even longer to get our food.

The best Pho Satay on the planet!....Im serious......You have been warned!!. My wife and I have been all over the place trying pho satay, including Vietnam, and I can tell you that this is by far the BEST there is to offer........I cant say anything about any other dish, as I cant bring myself to miss an opportunity to eat the soup!! I usually get the seafood satay, but the beef and chicken are also great ( same amazing broth). I have told countless friends about it and now they say I ruined their life because they drive from all over the place including Cochrane for lunch and are always late for work!!. I work in the deep south and go there at least twice a week. Be early as it gets packed. Great staff and was just renovated. AWESOME!!!!!
Oh ya, they are open sundays from 11:00 to 3:00 which is perfect for a hangover brunch.......Nice touch!

Amazing!. The Noodle King is beyond amazing food is absolutely great lots of food and the price is good, i have been going to the Noodle King ever since they were on 17th Ave SW, absolutely friendly staff!!

Best Satay Pho in Calgary. Noodle King's satay pho is the best in Calgary! I've tried many satay phos and the broth for the satay is the best here. Lots of other vietnamese restaurants just add hot sauce to their soup base, but they actually make a satay soup base at Noodle King. Highly recommend!

Ridiculously expensive, small portion, mediocre service. Just went there today. The pho noodle starts at an insane $9.00. You can't choose the size as it's listed at only one price.

The sizing proportion for a $9.00 noodle soup was pitiful. This thing was smaller than other Vietnamese restaurants' size medium.

The moment the waitress placed the bowl on my table I knew it was an immediate rip off.

Ugh, who would come here? The windows are blocked with graphics and the suite sits at the back of the building where the Thai Boat restaurant is (across from Joey Barlow), completely hidden from view.

I'm hesitant to come here again.

Message to Robin Walker. I think the restaurant that you are referring to who claims to have the best wor wonton is King's Wonton Restaurant on Meridian Ave, NE, a 10 min drive away.

Disappointing. There was alot of food selction on the menu. We tried the phoa and broken rice with chicken. The food was okay, nothing special. Whats dissapointing about this place was the restaurant server, she was very in a hurry to take our order and was very rude.
Robin Parker
OK they say this is the best wor wonton soup well I was very disappointed I want to get a the truck and drive to Rocky Mtn House for really good wor wonton soup at pearls restaurant so if your willing to drive for this soup then take a drive to pearls in Rocky Mtn House

Pho Sate beef #21-- ordered 2 spring rolls as an appy and were very good. As well as the Pho Sate Beef soup. Really creamy, spicy coconut/peanut broth. Added touch were sliced tomatoes and cucumbers. There could of been more meat. Noodles were of the vermicelli kind. Peanut sauce was great too. Fantastic bowl of Pho. I give this a 9.3 rating. Staff was friendly and courteous. I will be back!!

My favourite vietnamese place ever!! The Satay soup is unlike any I've have anywhere else. My co workers and I come here for lunch often and the staff know exactly what we want without us even having to say it. Hands down the best!
Therealpopo28
Beef satay soup. Had the beef satay noodle soup. The broth was fantastic! It's was a coconut milk and peanut base. beef was perfectly cooked but there wasn't a lot of it. Noodles were well done as well. I give it a 9.4 out of 10. Only real complaint would be that the portion is small. Would relate to most smalls at other places. Will come back for sure!

Favourite place for Vietnamese noodles. Excellent and friendly service, fair prices, delicious food (try the satay soup noodles).
That should be reason enough to go.

Beef pho sate is the best ! Delicious broth very unique unlike any other pho place in the city. Salad rolls are also delicious ! Their hot sauce is sweeter then most but very delicious. I always look forward to eating here

Beef Sate? Yes Please.. I am very torn - my usual go to Pho place is just a few blocks from here, but this week a coworker convinced me to give Noodle King a try and now I find myself questioning what I thought I knew about Pho.

The Beef Sate Noodle Soup here is unreal, but different than most, in a really good way. The broth has more than the usual, with coconut milk and peanut sauce (I think), and several other different elements that set it apart. Great spice, amazing flavor, the broth I am sold on and would actually order by the cup full if socially acceptable. I can see me coming here often (since I just returned from my second visit in 3 days, it's clearly becoming a habit already). I do have to admit I liked that the pop comes in the old style glass bottles... small things amuse me, but I enjoyed it. I have heard the Subs here are also amazing, will have to gain the will power to skip the soup and try one eventually.

I was a bit disapointed by the portion of beef, I had maybe 4 slices in my bowl. Normally I cannot finish a full bowl of Pho in one sitting, but here I polished off all the noodles and beef without problem. So, maybe the one draw back is you aren't getting as much as with other places, but then again, it's still a giant bowl of delicious soup and for just under $10, I shouldn't complain that much.

The vermicelli noodles are so good. I work next door and order the same thing everytime and when I call in my order they know exactly who it is

It's tue night 7pm I'm the only one in here and I'm high! Pho hete is amazing and the price is right! Very relaxing

Great Sate Soup. I came for the sate soup, and I'm glad I did. It is probably the best sate pho I've had in Calgary thus far. Many viet restaurants will do nothing more than throw some chili oil into their regular broth, but a select few will do it right, with peanuts, coconut, and satay sauce. I believe Noodle King does it best.

I don't think their regular pho is anything special, but the sate is worth the drive across the city, as another reviewer mentioned.

I work next to noodle king do it's easy to grab food at lunch. I have loyally been going there for months and I'm sure I've spent at least $250 there. Lately their debit machine has not been working so well. This time today it took 6 times to get it to work. She wanted to take my card from me and I said no, I'll use my card and she got very upset. She told me i should bring cash next time. I told her I won't come back if I'm treated that way. Their customer service skills have always been a little rough around the edges, but she was downright rude this time! It doesn't take many customers to set a trend. There is food elsewhere and I'd rather that, thank you.

Love the Sate Beef. I drive across town for the sate beef pho here. I love the deep, peanutty, coconutty broth. The service is always great. There's taro root in the spring rolls, which is unusual, but tastes great. Also, coke in glass bottles. Love this place

First timer here but the pho was so good. Fresh ingredients and friendly staff.

Good so far. I've been ordering Satay Chicken Salad Rolls for a year from this place and have been pleased every time. Tonight I tried the fried rice and it is by far the best I've had in this city! Haven't tried any pho or rice noodle dishes, but the subs are delicious too.

WTF?. I order the Beef Satay, what a shock. I know each Vietnamese place had it's way of making soup and some you like more then others, but this was absolutely the worst I've had out of at least 2 dozen Vietnamese places I've visited. The soup was a muddy colour, Bland (not spicy at all) had tomatoes and cucumbers in it (who eats warm cucumber?) Worst of all it was gritty, weird unexplainable grit? Inedible. I will NOT be back!
Wanda
Disappointing. Visited this restaurant recently since we enjoy Vietnamese food as a family. First time trying it out. Was very quiet.

My husband ordered #106, Chicken with Mushrooms. Sauce was bland. Mushrooms were out of a can (like really?).

Kids ordered #50, Charbroiled chicken, spring rolls on vermicelli. The spring rolls were good. The chicken tasted like shrimp (my daughters quote) and the vermicelli sticky. Our kids typically devour this dish (in other Vietnamese restaurants) and they hardly ate it here.

I was feeling like Pho and ordered #21 Sate Chicken Noodle Soup. They brought me Beef Noodle Soup. So I flagged the waitress and told her. She brought the bowl of soup to the kitchen and apologized. Two minutes later she returned with the same bowl of soup and said you can continue eating it if you wish. I said no and she left without the soup. So it sat on the table. 2 minutes later she was back with a bowl of chicken that she plopped into the bowl of beef pho and said here is your chicken, its ok now? I was truly mortified. I wonder how John Gilchrist would have felt. I had another 3 or 4 bites of the soup and since I really didn't enjoy the flavour all that much (the chicken was bland and did not take on the flavour of the soup) I didn't want any more. Plus it was slightly gritty (?).

Disappointed = Yup. I do have to say the service was very quick and our food came out steaming hot. However each dish was disappointing enough for us that we will not return or recommend this restaurant.
The.Greg
Been here about 10 times with work people, tried 10 different things and have never liked or managed to finish anything. We just go elsewhere now, food from a vending machine is better.
5starG
Come back here for million times, but only and the only one food that I eat here.

fried rice & fried chicken, the waiter always knows without looking at the menu..

best fried rice & fried chicken in town, braaatttt.....

FANTASTIC!!. Take it from a 100% Vietnamese gal who gets authentic Vietnamese food from home as well as have frequented a ton of Vietnamese restaurants in the city, this is one of the top Vietnamese restaurants to go to in the N.E. as far as taste, pricing and service go. I agree, it doesn't look like much on the outside but we're not paying for the looks of the place. We are always seated quickly, the food arrives quickly, the prices are great and we love Monica, one of the regular servers there. Another place for Pho where the taste and price (even over Noodle King sorry NK can't be beat) is called Pho Xuang across from (East Side of 36th Street) Franklin Mall & T & T
Bring cash if you go to this restaurant as it speeds up your paying process when you leave. If you're looking for Vietnamese Subs, go to the Sub shop in that plaza. $5 gets you a huge, fresh filling sub. So there you go Calgary folk. 3 establishments to add to your favourites! Happy eating :)

Great vietnamese food in NE. This is the one of the best vietnamese food i have ever tried, they have variety kind of food for customers to chose, such as rice, excellent beef noodle soup ( the one i like the most), broken rice, vemiccelli ( which i was impressed)... Not only that, the drink in this restaurant is awesome, i like the bubble drink and the milkshake here.
The price in this restaurant is not espensive, it is arround $10, and they have the special lunch on weekend just under $10.
Generally, this is the good place for those who like cheap - tasety - vietnamese food.

Solid Vietnamese. Although from the outside, it looks like nothing special, Noodle King is surely one of the better Vietnamese restaurants in the NE. I visited for lunch and the service was excellent, with the food coming out almost instantly. I ordered a tofu and vegetables dish over vermicelli and I was very impressed by it. The tofu was nicely deep fried, and the quality of the ingredients was noticeable, as they used "higher end" vegetables like baby bok choy and red pepper. My counterparts were equally happy with their beef soups.

The menu is quite extensive, and even though there is only a small vegetarian section, at least there is one!

Awesome food, missing drinks. Gotta love the Noodle King. It is a staple for me and my coworkers as it is close, reasonably affordable, and very tasty.

Only complaint would be the perpetual lack of drink ingredients, including common items like red beans and tapioca pearls.

Many restaurants come and go from our lives. There one minute, gone the next. It’s a hard reality, the restaurant business - most establishments don’t succeed. Quality and price aren’t the only things that matter; location, and a certain element of luck m
