Review Wiener Schnitzel Haus - Calgary

Kyle Bailey
This has been one of our family's restaurant of choice for special occasions since we discovered it about 10 years ago. The quality of the food is consistent and we've never had a single dining experience that was less than superb. A locally owned and operated hidden gem, can't recommend it enough!

Definitely not the place to go for customer service. We were turned away because we didn’t have reservations when the restaurant was empty. It is a completely different experience than when we went to Germany. She was rude and just wanted us to leave, even though they were suppose to be open for another hour and a half.

I had the gulasch soup and jäger schnitzel. Both had incredible flavour, I would have wanted more soup but it would have been too much with the size of the schnitzel. The schnitzel was phenomenal. Definitely would recommend treating yourself at this restaurant.

I have dined at this fine restaurant 3 times now. Every time I have had an amazing dinner! The service is very good. Friendly staff and a nice environment. I don't mind paying a bit more for 5 star food. I will be back again.

It was Christmas Eve and we had not yet decided on a meal with lockdowns and all. I decided to try the restaurant for take out but it was quite late in the evening. They stayed open late to accommodate our family....Very kind! The meal provided was excellent. The Schnitzel was top notch as were the potatoes and cabbage. I can't recommend this restaurant enough and the exceptional owners.

We've been coming here for amazing, fresh schnitzel since they opened this family run restaurant over ten years ago. The food is always spot on and this is always my go to restaurant for my birthday or any special occasion that warrants a night out. Rich and a little indulgent it's a perfect place to enjoy authentic schnitzel. Our absolute favorite thing on the menu is the Jaeger Schnitzel (also known as hunter schnitzel with a mushroom brandy sauce) and the desserts are made in 'haus'. Can't recommend enough if you're looking for something different! It's a small family restaurant so I'd also recommend reservation if you're a large group.

Schnitzel and beer tasted great. Atmosphere was nice and cozy. Good service. For a drink and entree expect to spend at least $37 to $50 plus tip per person.

A friend treated me too dinner here. Came back two nights later with eight of us for a Birthday dinner. Yes the food was that good...in fact, I cant recall a restaurant in Calgary with this uniqueness! There was genuine care for customer needs. The staff keep it real. Their humor, and pride... shines in this atmosphere. Its all combined together.. Very delighted with this nugget in the rough!

Reserved a table for 8 guests, for 7:00 pm. Upon arrival, they could only seat 7 guests, no apology was extended, and the service was incredibly slow. When we inquired about vegetarian options, we were offered a sarcastic response, "there are no vegetarians here, this is a German restaurant"! Perhaps, they feel that providing poor service is ok with a party of 6 or more, as they add an 18% gratuity automatically. Food was good, however the sub par service was disappointing.

Delicious food and fantastic atmosphere. We couldn't have asked for nicer evening with lovely hosts. Definitely going back soon.

Spectacular meal last night, and darling little restaurant. Thank you so much for accommodating us with two newborn babies in tow, because of you we all had a delightful early Valentine's Day!

If you haven't been to the Schnitzel Haus you haven't been to Calgary! #yyc Great family and great food! Go! Do it!

Fantastic place to eat, and great service.

Exellent service, food and place.

Very over priced. My entree was a schnitzel entree which consisted of 2 small pieces of schnitzel in a mushroom cream sauce and nothing else. There were a number of choices for side dishes, veggies for $12, spaetzle for $9. I ordered the spaetzle side, small portion and very bland. A $37 meal that was not exceptionally tasty and did not leave me full either! If you are looking for tasty Austrian type cuisine at a reasonable price head to the opposite end of the city to the Austrian/Canadian Club. So much better not to mention a larger variety of food on the menu.

Great authentic German food, good drink, friendly staff, and a comfortable environment. It was a fantastic experience and I'll definitely be coming here again!

They have a good wine and beer selection. Hostess is very friendly. Most of all, the food is really good. We had the Jäger Schnitzel and the Tiroler Schnitzel, with Spätzle on the side. I thought it would be super starchy and filling, but it turned out to be just the right portion. Will definitely come back. It's a small, homey place. There were only two tables (including ours) when we came tonight. The food took a while to come out, but it was well worth the wait!

Great place with great, tasty food. Pretty authentic with good beer to wash it all down. I like the neighbourhood friendly and warm atmosphere. Nice staff!

I just want to start off by saying, don’t believe Mike, don’t even read his review. Although if you got to my review you probably already read it but don’t believe him.<br/><br/>I totally loved the Weiner Haus, ever since my trip to Europe I was intent on trying Weiner Schnitzel and I tell you, the schnitzel I had here was BETTER than the schnitzel I had in Vienna. But let’s rewind.<br/><br/>The Weiner Haus doesn’t look like much, it’s a quaint little place that almost feels like a house instead of a restaurant, but it also makes you feel more at home than a restaurant would. The carpeted floors made it was very warm and inviting, like a favourite grandparents place. I also really liked all the plates and dishes that they had, they were very authentic and fit the theme nicely.<br/><br/>Now the food was insanely good. For drinks we enjoyed a smooth Stiegl Radler, which is light, fruity, crisp and great for when you have to drive later (am I right DD’s?!). To start off we had the Mac and Cheese, which is one of their most popular menu items, as well as the pretzel and smear. Both were great but the pretzel stole my heart, I mean the smear was smashing!<br/><br/>Now the main course was a whole lotta delicious. I got the Alpen Schnitzel which was filled with air dried bacon, emmental cheese, and fresh mushrooms (wow). The schnitzel was breaded to perfection, not too much breading, not to little. Crispy but subtle and with a squeeze of lemon it was the flavour plethora your mouth has been asking for. To add to that it came with the best darn fries I have had in a long time. The fries were perfectly salted and cooked. I like my fries on the less crispy side and I was a big fan.<br/><br/>We couldn’t manage to eat dessert to but I am sure it would have measured up to the rest of the meal, and the great company we had! I am just grateful Jackie and Morgan showed us the place, and if I have to go back without my beloved Mike, I have to do what I have to do.<br/><br/>Check out Mike and our Guests review at the link below!

I decided to try this place for dinner a day after my birthday. I was super excited because the menu looked great if you like authentic German/Austrian food. I have been to both countries and the food at wiener-schnitzel haus is as authentic as it gets. (Delicious). The atmosphere is very cozy and owners are extremely friendly. My family will defiantly be back again. Thanks for the great birthday dinner.

Always great, fresh food. Small, family run and quaint. The service is lovely and the food is reliable, our family loves coming here. It really is worth a try.

Every time I go here I can't wait to go back. I've had the traditional wiener-schnitzel always with spatzle (it's the greatest!), I've also had the pear and brie schnitzel which is also very very very good. The vegetables are always cooked to perfection, as is the schnitzel and spatzle (German dumpling pasta). I have gone here multiple times with one other person and I've also been here with a group of 6. They are such friendly staff and the food is amazing! It's a small restaurant so you may want to make reservations.
Charles Mackenzie
Small plates, bland flavour, expensive, snotty staff. Left hungry and disgruntled. They want me to write 140 words but it didn't deserve that many. The wine was good. Twice the price is like to have paid even for that

My boyfriend and I decided to come here for dinner on a Friday evening. I called ahead to make reservations to ensure that we were guaranteed a spot :) The restaurant is not very big and I would highly recommend making reservations before going (approximately 10 tables). Once we got there, we were greeted by the owner. She was very sweet and advised us that it would be a few minutes as they got our table ready. Every table was occupied. The restaurant like mentioned above in the history is family operated. The daughter came over to serve us and take our order. She suggested that we try their Austrian Salad which is not your typical salad. The salad consisted of 3 different varieties of greens and vegetables, which I will go into more detail below. We both ordered a breaded schnitzel with a side of spatzle, and shared the salad.<br/><br/>Read more on my blog...

Very tasty! But also a bit unreasonably expensive for what you get. <br/>Unfortunately, the servers had a poorly hidden snotty attitude for some reason, right from "hi, could we have a table for 2?" I see many other reviewers have had a similar experience. <br/>I haven't had such bad service in a while and I won't be back.
Randy Mengering
Wow, we came in with no expectations. Were we ever impressed!! Really nice quiet atmosphere, great music, fantastic food. We will certainly be coming back. A very pleasant surprise!
Markoyl
Overpriced for what u get. Schnitzel itself was good. BUT service was at canteen level, meal assortment was poor and too expensive given restaurant's location, service and food selection. Not going back.
Seafood-Free Eats
Amazing Food.. We were in for my wife's birthday and were treated wonderful. It's seafood free so we don't have to worry about cross-contamination!
Gerbgilsky
Terrible service with average food. If the service wasn't so bad I would consider the food a little above average for the overall experience. But the waitress did her best to make sure that a return visit wasn't in the cards. Poor attention to any simple requests, rude comments regarding our delay in deciding to stay and have cake and coffee following a $120.00 meal . . . . . needless to say we didn't stay around for coffee and cake . . . . . couldn't wait to pay the bill and say goodbye and never look back . . . . save your time and money and go to a restaurant that will make you feel welcome and not regret the experience of dining here.

Horrendous Service/Overpriced Food. If you're not going to spend money on alcohol, and you're offended by your serving staff ignoring you and then calling you names, don't go to the Wiener-Schnitzel Haus!!! The food was okay, but way overpriced. The service was something to laugh about, once the shock wore off. Our party of four had a reservation, arrived on time, ordered and were presented our meals and had eaten within 60 minutes. When the decision on whether or not we were going to have coffee and dessert wasn't made within two minutes (after having been ignored for over 15 minutes), we were called "a peculiar group" - and not in a ha-ha kind of way. Decision made ... we would leave. When the server was advised that her behaviour was rude and unacceptable, we were told that they "needed the table" ... for whom, we have no idea. There was no lineup. We dropped $125 in 75 minutes, were treated with distain and disrespect. Never again!!

Good food but not worth the price. After seeing the good reviews for this place, I decided to try to place out. Had the Haus Schnitzel and "Gypsy" Schnitzel shared with a friend. They were good, especially the salad that comes with it. However, if you were looking for substance, don't go to this place. The price was well over than what the food deserves. If I pay this much for a meal, at the very least it better fill up my tummy.

We celebrated a birthday at the Schnitzel Haus tonight. It was our second visit and we had reservations both times( necessary). The food and atmosphere are amazing and service attentive. We especially loved the sparkler and happy birthday sing along with dessert. We will be back!

Decent food, service is lacking.. This small family runner restaurant does produce very appetizing food, but we consistently lack in service whenever we dine here.
Paula Elizabeth Shyba
Fantastic. I ate here this evening for the first time and was very pleasantly surprised. Being German I've had my fair share of Schnitzel, and this was one of the best I've had. The breading was crisp, it wasn't greasy or soggy, and the flavours were spot-on. The salad and roasted vegetables that came with my meal were delicious. They also have a well-rounded selection of German and Austrian beers.<br/><br/>Regarding the comments about "slow service", it's just a different style that's more similar to the European way of dining. Enjoy it!
Llhowes
Sucked. Way overly priced and the portions were way to small

So-So. Service was slow initially but improved over the course of the evening. Food was delicious but our main course arrived before we were finished our appetizer. Food seems a bit pricey for what it is.
Luke
The woman serving us didn't seem happy to be there at all and took forever to take our orders. The man that served us our beer however was very nice. The food took its time getting to us as well.

Fantastic. We have been to the Wiener-Schnitzel Haus, on two occations now, and on both occations the Food and Service has been FIRST CLASS.<br/>Schnitzel's are the Best in Calgary.<br/>I lived in Frankfurt for a few years, so I know a good Schnitzel when I eat one.<br/>Pity they do not have Eisbein/Schweinshaxe on the menu!<br/>Book in advance and you will never be dissapointed.<br/>Love it and can't wait for my next meal there.
Emilycat07
Surprised. I have to say i am very surprised at the negatives pointed out by a few people on here. I have been to the Wiener-Schnitzel Haus a dozen times over the past three years. I can honestly say that without exception, the food is always amazing, and the service great. In fact, I have found that although it may be months in between my visits, the female owner always remembers me, always remembers the type of wine I like and is always super friendly-and that is not because I go there often or I'm particularly memorable! <br/>As to the service, they may not "hover", but I don't like to be constantly interrupted when I am having my meal to ask how said meal is so perhaps its a perspective thing. The place is small enough that if you want attention, it is not difficult to get. Mouth is watering just thinking about my next meal there!
Ryan Coke
Come And Enjoy. Some people say the service here is slow. I prefer to think of it as European. If you want to dine and dash American style, go to McDonald’s. If you want to come in, relax, take your time and enjoy a good meal, then this is your place. The place is small and appears to be family run, but with an ounce of patience, you will have a nice evening out. Also do yourself a favor and phone in a reservation. Like I said, it’s small and I think it’s family run so any advance notice you give only helps to grease the wheels.<br/><br/>I've been here 5 or 6 times now over the years. Every time had a reservation and every time had an excellent experience. In fact, that’s the plan for tonight!

Slightly disappointing.. My partner enjoyed his first visit so much he took me there for dinner the same week, and he was surprised at the difference in service we received and the quality of the food. <br/><br/>The cucumbers in our salads were slimy, mushy and not at all pleasant, and there were fiberous inedible bits of something I could not identify in my cabbage, and again something hard and inedible in the veg that came with my schnitzel (one piece of which caught in my teeth and was very uncomfortable for the half hour it took to work it out). <br/><br/>Both of these issues I'd have been happy to bring up with our server, but she didn't reappear at our table until long after we had finished our dishes. Not wanting to be the person who complains about their food over a nearly empty plate, I let it slide. I suppose I could have carried my plate down to the service station and made a complaint, but I'm not that brave and I foolishly clung to the belief that she would eventually come ask us how our meal was before we'd cleaned our plates.<br/><br/>I don't normally care what I pay for my food, as long as it's good, but this time I felt like we'd been snookered out of $100. Because of the price point it just isn't worth it for me to try again and it be may be excellent or may be mediocre. For $100 I could get mediocre food and a great view at Sky360 in the Calgary Tower, haha.

GREAT dining experience. Had a great dining experience last night with 3 girlfriends and a baby. From the minute i had made a reservation and was advised that there are no high chairs, but if we brought our own we would be most welcomed. And we were. From beginning to end this place is fabulous. Viennese Schnitzel at its best (all different kinds) and the apple strudel was delectable. Bathrooms were so clean. We had a request for separate checks and this was not a problem either. Strongly recommend this resto. Do not judge a book by its cover though, because driving by it, the sign looks a little dated but truthfully, this is the only negative.. the sign could do with a facelift! Keep up the great work.

We have been going to this restaurant since it opened and we all love it. The owners treat us like family and it is wonderful to have your name and likes/dislikes remembered. The food is awesome and they really should expand! :)

The best Schnitzel I ever had in my life ....I know this place now for more than 5 years and I have try many Restaurants in my life but this place offers the best schnizel I ever had ....GOOD JOB....keep up the good work..:)<br/>Val.

Awefull service but have to admit amazing food. Service was so bad that we will NOT return. Made a reservation for 7pm. At 8pm we finally placed our order. Then they served me the wrong meal which is not a big deal at all if you just correct it. Instead they made a big fuss about it and they blamed me for it, truly beyond rude. As mentioned in another review it is pricy especially with zero service. I strongly suggest you take the same amount of money but then spend it in a nice fancy restaurant where their guests are valued.
Liketoeat
Completely overrated. I dont understand what the fuss is all about. If i wanted to eat some breaded meats, i can make it at home for less than $100, which is how much we spent for two people. I guess other reviewers never left calgary and try better food.
Kyle
Delish. Home cooked authentic austrian food.... it was great. very small but cozy inside so maybe make reservations..<br/>the desert is great too

Best Schnitzel Ever!. I grew up in Germany and sometimes do get a bit homesick for good traditional food. Tried out everything in Austrian/Swiss/German cuisine in Calgary and area and this has been by far my best dinner in town in a long time! <br/><br/>This is a small place with a small menu - and big flavours! The schnitzels are tender and done to perfection. You can choose if you prefer the breaded version or a pan-fried one. The last time we went we tried both options and loved them equally. My biggest surprise was the house salad. It comes as a combination of cucumber salad, potato salad, red and white cabbage salads and some dark leaf lettuce. Done with a fresh modern twist on the traditional recipes they were as successful as the main dish. Of course we couldn't resist trying the Apfelstrudel for dessert (served with real whipped cream and not the stuff from a can) and were not disappointed. I'm looking forward to going back to try their other traditional dessert option - the Cardinal Slice.<br/><br/>The drinks menu includes some hard to find Austrian and German beers. I had a Löwenbräu, served with a perfect head ;-) If you want water it is served from a bottle with some lemon zest and a fresh mint leaf.<br/><br/>Do give this little place a try and do make reservations ahead of time.
Stefan
Authentic. Finally; a place that sells true Austrian-style schnitzel; that means butterflied, pounded flat, with flaky light, puffy breading. None of this thick juicy stuff here. The spatzle is authentic as well. <br/><br/>Also had the kalt plasse which I can wholeheartedly recommend; having a nice assortment of dried meats and cheeses in typical German style. <br/><br/>Very cozy, great service. Prices are a bit higher, but well worth it.
Convolution
Good stuff overall.. Short version: tasty and comfortable, though not perfect. It's pricy, but worth it especially if you get the gulasch. <br/><br/>We planned a family dinner here tonight, and so we made a reservation (almost a must at this place). It was a bit unfortunate in that we were seated right by the door at a makeshift table, through which sub-zero breezes would blow every time people went in and out. But! There are few tables at this place, so it wasn't a huge deal. Somebody has to sit there, I guess. Still, a small screen would be very useful here.<br/><br/>First: cleanliness. Yes, everything was very nice and clean. The kitchen is mostly open, and I had a prime view of most of what was going on in there. It appeared to all be professional and respectable, sane and organized. <br/><br/>The service was friendly and warm, if occasionally absent-minded. A few times some small requests were forgotten and we had to remind them, but it was nothing that detracted from the overall casual and friendly feel that everyone had. <br/><br/>The food itself was all quite excellent. We started with a shared Kalte Platte. It was much more like a common e.g. French charcuterie plate than any kalte platte I've had while in Austria or Germany. That's not a criticism, exactly... The cured meats were all good quality, and while it may not be like any K-P I've ever had while actually in Europe, I'd say the difference is, if anything, an improvement. <br/><br/>The main event included traditional Wiener schnitzel, gulasch with spaetzle, jaeger schnitzel, and rahm schnitzel. The namesake Wiener schnitzel was tasty, and it was not the least bit greasy. The signature puffy cloud envelope of crust was not there, however, which means I still have yet to find a Wiener schnitzel comparable to those actually found in Wien. Rather than a puffy airy shell, it was a "normal" breading that stuck directly to the meat.<br/><br/>The Austrian side salads were interesting, tasty, and would not be out of place at all in Austria.<br/><br/>The jaeger and rahm schnitzels were both delicious: tender schnitzels with two tasty creamy sauces and excellent spaetzle.<br/><br/>Finally, the gulasch was the true winner overall I'd say. The meat was beautifully tender, and a little zing of spicy hot paprika kept it all very interesting. Add in some of those lovely little spaetzle and you've got an amazing meal. When I go back, this is what I'll order.<br/><br/>Finally, we had desserts and coffee. Between us we tried the apple strudel, the sour cherry strudel, and the Cardinal slice. The apple was respectably good -- warm and satisfying. I really liked the zing of the sour cherry strudel. I didn't get a chance to try the Cardinal slice, as it disappeared long before I had a chance to stab a fork at it. I'm assured that it was amazing :D

The Parisian schnitzel stuffed with Brie and fresh pear, served with spatzle, was delicious. Friendly service. Family run. Cozy. Reservations recommended.

Outstanding schnitzel and friendly service. We have been numerous times and brought various friends and family who all liked it too! Doesn't look like much from the outside, but the inside is nicer.
Jenny
Scolded by the owner but overall good experience. Me and my two good girl-friends tried Weiner-Schnitzel Haus for the first time. The service was great. The waitress who runs the restaurant with her family was really attentive, friendly and enthusiastic. Her attitude was really great and made the experience really nice. The food was delicious too. I've never really had German/Austrian food before, but I would imagine this is what it would be like. The restaurant is small yet cozy. Its definately worth a try and the trip out to Bowness. There is only one negative we'd like to point out. When our food came out, we were really excited because it all looked really good, so we took out our phones to take pictures and were prepared to TWEET about them, bascially to give the restaurant some free positive advertising, but, the owner came over and scolded us and gave us the impression that we were not allowed to do this. This stunned us, as we have never been repremanded for taking pictures in a restaurant before. So I suggest that if the owners are really that against it, they should put up signs asking patrons to not do such things. But in all honesty, its to their advantage to allow it, because the public do follow media outlets like Twitter and Facebook, why wouldn't want postive feedback? My one friend was offended by the scolding and has said that she won't return because of it. Regardless, we tried not to let it dampen our evening. Food was good and service was good.
JS
It's too bad we didn't make it through the doors. My boyfriend and I finally got a chance to try a supposed neighborhood gem. We got their at 6pm on a sunny Saturday. The doors were open and inviting. The restaurant was about 75% full with 4-5 empty tables. Two chefs turned to look at us. The waitress looked at us. Nobody greeted us or smiled. In fact we felt not welcomed. At first we thought they were just busy, but after standing at the door for over 5 minutes while the waitress served multiple tables without once coming over, we left. If they do not wish to have more business, we won't give it to them.

Absolutely Fantastic!. I dobn't know why I haven't reviewed this place before. We have been coming here for quite some time now, and we are always (always!) very pleased with our visit. Brian (a highly trained chef) knows exactly what he's doing with a schnitzel. And there are choices! Lots of good choices on the menu, and every one is made personally ... with obvious love and care ... by Brian. If you like schnitzel, and spetzle, go, go.
Char Brewer
Nice family restaurant. I TOOK MY THREE CHILDREN HERE TONIGHT AND BOTH THE SERVICE AND FOOD WAS GREAT! The schnitzel was outstanding. I am a chef as is my husband, and we loved it. OUr three kids all enjoyed their meals as well. The owner served us and she was a delightful woman. We will be back to try other menu items for sure.
Quebecoise
Great Schnitzel - harmony in flavour and texture. I'd had good schnitzel in London Ontario at Marienbad, and missed it when I got here... 'til I found this place. My husband and I each got a schitzel dinner (mine was the Tiroler and his the Zigeuner). Both were good, but my husband ooohed-and-awwed over my Tiroler schitzel: what with the bacon and melty swiss, it was a harmonious union. The dinners came with vegetables and spaetzel (both good). I admit I'm still left wanting that awesome creamy cheese-and-bacon-and-herb-sauced spaetzel I had at Tumbleweeds in Medicine Hat though...<br/><br/>We also got some good beers; I had Edelweiss, which had an interesting flavour (not for you if you like your beer pretty standard). Service was slow at the start, but smooth thereafter, and always friendly.<br/><br/>Dessert wasn't as nice as I'd expected - we split an apple strudel. The filling was a bit... mealy? (hard to describe) and the pastry a bit mushy. Oh well... I'll have to have try strudel at the Watermill Bakery sometime to make up for it (...or head to Edelweiss Imports to see what they offer besides Black Forest Cake ;)<br/><br/>The place is small, so call ahead (at a minimum) or make reservations. It's relatively casual.

Delicious Food!. I went to Wiener-Schnitzel Haus for dinner on Friday night. The food was so delicious, and so authentic. I spent a few weeks in Austria and Germany last summer, and the schnitzel here was as good if not better than any I tried in Europe. We also had spatzle, which tasted just like my grandma's. The restaurant is much nicer inside than the outside would lead you to believe. It seemed to be run by a mother-daughter team, and they were serving all the tables. Service was a tad slow at the end because they were so busy, but it was well worth it for the quality of food. I'll definitely visit again!
JP
My favorite!!. My favorite of all times and I am not even Austrian!! <br/><br/>The quality of the food is phenomenal and authentic. The atmosphere is outstanding. The family that runs the place is extremely nice and personable. <br/><br/>I am picky...I tend to look for things I don't like - I loved almost everything about this place. The interior of the restaurant is cozy and inviting. The only thing is...the restaurant owners would do well if the outside of their restaurant reflected more of what the restaurant actually is. It took me a long time to enter this restaurant because from the outside it looks dingy. If only they would just change the signs to something slightly more elegant. The location is fine and considering they are part of a strip mall they can probably not do much, but the least they should do is update those signs.<br/><br/>Having said all that, this is my favorite restaurant in Calgary. There are other restaurants that have great food, but few restaurants are run by such a genuinely nice family.
Spencer
Great food and it is run by a family that are very personable and friendly.

Authentic, Good Food - Poor Service*. This doesn't happen very often, but every once in a while we encounter a restaurant owner/manager that really does not want you taking pictures. <br/><br/>Tonight was such a night. I admit first fault. I placed the menu on the ground in the light coming from the window in order to get a photo of it. That was poor form on my part. Menus do not belong on the ground. <br/><br/>I was asked by a lady I presume to be the owner if I wanted a menu. I assumed she meant one to take home, so I enthusiastically said, "Yes, Please!"<br/><br/>Then she asked what I wanted one for. I didn't want to disclose that I was intending to do a review of her restaurant prior to being served the meal but didn't want to lie either so I simply said, "to upload to a site that features restaurant menus". <br/><br/>She asked whether I had asked permission or not. I admitted that I hadn't and apologized, immediately asking her if I could take pictures of her menu and food. <br/><br/>She said no, saying that they had a website of their own, and repeated that I should have asked permission, shouldn't have I?. She was right. She was right hostile. I have a feeling that even had I asked for permission BEFORE hand, the answer would have been the same. So I put my camera away for the night and hoped to enjoy the meal. <br/><br/>The food was actually very good - well prepared and authentic, including the wonderful spatzle. The jager sauce is fantastic.<br/><br/>The side salad that accompanied the meal was also above average.<br/><br/>The service however was horribly slow and borderline hostile after the menu incident. It was at least 20 minutes before we ordered, including our drinks. Our table was never checked on during the meal - so if anybody was missing something (which we were) - too bad and we were never asked if we wanted dessert. A raspberry cake sitting on the bar looked awesome. <br/><br/>In fairness, the slow service may not have been a direct result of the menu incident. It seemed the same lady was not only serving all of tables in the tiny restaurant, but also doing some food preparation and dish duty. <br/><br/>To put her mind at ease that I wasn't some competitor's spy, I explained afterwards who I was, why I wanted photos and why I couldn't explain fully before the meal. I got heck for the menu and was sternly told I should have asked again. I understand. Sorry. Perhaps I should have asked for decent service too.
