I went to Sushi Hiro tonight for dinner with my husband. The service was amazing (as always), they greet you the moment you walk in and let you chose where you would like to seat (they have both Japanese style tables and classic restaurant tables). The waitresses came around multiple times to check on us and brought the food at a nice pace (not too slow not too fast)! The food was great starting from the super fresh sushi and sashimi! The appetizers were delicious ( we had chicken kaarage, Japanese pickles and pickled crab). The tempura was piping hot and crunchy while the rice was very fluffy! Even the salad and the miso were great! The atmosphere is typical Japanese and perfect for a relaxing dinner with friends or family. I can't wait to dine here again!

A great place to go for lunch. Come early for the lunch specials as they seem to run out quickly. The food was delicious and high quality. Our lunch box came with tempura, sashimi, soup, salad and another small soup dish.
The nabeyaki udon was fantastic, filled with traditional vegetables, a molten egg, fish cakes, and chicken. The broth was rich and mellow. Every single vegetable was perfectly cooked: meaty shiitake mushrooms, nega negi (long green onion), carrots, spinach and cabbage. The tempura could have used some salt, but perhaps not. I asked for the tempura on the side, instead of served in the broth. I shouldn’t mess with tradition. The portion was large and served piping hot. L and I both raved about the nabeyaki udon and agreed we’d come back for this dish.

Sushi Hiro Japanese Restaurant is a casual Japanese restaurant, which located on 5th Ave Southwest Downtown Calgary. It is a medium size of the restaurant, but the location of the restaurant is not very easy to find. It mainly serves sushi, bento boxes, and kitchen entrees.
My friend and I had a late lunch at Sushi Hiro Japanese Restaurant. We arrived at the restaurant around 1 pm. Even though it was weekdays, the restaurant was still very busy. But, we had no problem to get a table. After we sat down, the server came to us and brought drinks and menu to us. The menu was very simple, but there were no many selections and no pictures. We had very hard time to order our lunch. The server was very friendly and helpful, who helped us.Â
We ordered $9.50 Chicken Teriyaki and $16.50 Nigiri Sushi special to share. After we ordered the food, our food came out the kitchen very fast. The Chicken Teriyaki was in the large portion and came with a salad with house dressing and a bowl of rice. The taste of the chicken teriyaki was very different from other restaurants. There were large pieces of chicken and the taste was very awesome. The salad was in Japanese style so delicious. It was a great deal for two people to share. The Nigiri Sushi Special was not that excited, which were fresh raw fish on sushi rice, included 8 pieces nigiri sushi and 2 pieces maki roll. Very easy, simple, and expensive. If two people share this dish, I would like to recommend people to order more stuff to eat.Â
In summary, both my friend and I love Chicken Teriyaki more. The prices of the food were expensive in this restaurant. But, it was very nice to try different Japanese restaurant in Calgary.
Traditional ambience, very attentive service, and stunning food. If you know traditional sushi, Japanese style, then you know that this restaurant is the best in town. Sushi Hiro has been in this location since the beginning, and that is going back at least forty years, if not more. This is the real deal, not a trendy approach at all. If you're looking for top quality cuisine and the freshest fish in traditional ambience that takes you out of Calgary, this is the place. Absolutely superb.
Honestly such a hidden gem in downtown Calgary! A Japanese owned restaurant with fresh offerings. We had the toro, salmon, ikura, amaebi nigiri, all of which were great. It's also great that they have more traditional items such as Japanese hot pot and chawanmushi. We'll be back again for sure!
Best sushi restaurant in Calgary. For great sushi, it's all about the rice, and Hiro does it best. It's soft and vinegar'ed to the right texture, which holds its flavour when biting down with the fish. The only other place in Alberta with such good sushi rice is Chef's Studio in Canmore, which also knows proper sushi rice.
The service here is always great for dinner, when it's slower than their lunch crowds. They provide the traditional attentive Japanese service.
I come here just for the chirashi bowl. I prefer the lunch version to the dinner version (more popular fishes for lunch like salmon, tuna, ebi). Tried various rolls and while the fish was high quality, they weren't worth their price tag imo.
Sushi Hiro is a classic sushi restaurant serving quality seafood skillfully prepared. Don't go there expecting trendy rolls that look like creepy animals but rather expect fresh seafood and good portions.
This is the first place I ate such over thirty years ago. I was converted to a sushi eater then and have eaten sushi in a multitude of establishments.
Hiro's cuisine is as good as any I've had. I'll be back there soon.
Haven't been here in years and decided to give it a try again. The decor was very 80's style.
We received the menu and ordered off of it but the selection seemed really limited. We find out later on that the waitress didn't give us the paper sushi menu. That was a disappointment since there wasn't much to choose from off the regular menu that I wanted and I was craving a few rolls and nigiri.
The lunch box seemed quite traditional. There were lots of different marinated veggies I've never tried before. It's not like the typical lunch boxes you get at other sushi restaurants. Good to try something different but still wished I had some rolls and nigiri.
Not a typical jap resto!. Went here to get some sushi rolls but then there wasnt much choices for special rolls . Ended up ordering the temaki which i didnt regret:) The sashimi was cut a bit thick compare to other place but it was good. The tonkatsu was ok the meat was cook well not chewy nor hard but wish it has more sauce in it. The teryaki chicken was my favorite . Very flavorful and cook nicely!

The zaru soban doesnt really have any taste.
They carry fresh fish,
but sashimi is cut very poorly and the the nigiri sushi with sauce had too much sauce (Unagi and Special Scallops).
But overall they are not bad.
I would go back for the Udon
Delicious Food + Wonderful Service = Magical Night. Thank you so much Sushi Hiro ! My first visit to Sushi Hiro was last night for my sister-in-law's surprise birthday dinner. There are not too many sushi restaurants that can host 16 people in a tatami room. We had an intimate private setting, course after course of delicious dishes and a diligent and helpful serving staff. My compliments and praises to the chefs. I drove from Edmonton to attend the function and I'll make a point to visit again the next time that I'm in Calgary.

Great Japanese Run Place. This place has the feel of a family run restaurant. The food feels authentic and very different from all the cookie cutter sushi restaurants downtown. Part of it stems from the fact that unlike almost every other restaurant downtown, the people running it are actually Japanese.
The restaurant decor is peaceful and homey, the staff are all , friendly and helpful. The food is tasty and fresh, without the pretentious stylings of typical North American restaurants.
My favorite meal is Ten Don. It is rice topped with fish tempura and a tasty sauce, served with a salad and soup for about 15$.
Great food, very authentic. I make a point of going to Sushi Hiro as often as possible.

Overall good experience. The selection of sushi is vast, and the service is good. Went with family and ordered a variety of rolls and sashimi. It was all fresh and tasty.
Authentic FTW. If you like fish then this is the place for you. Price is reasonable when you consider we are in the middle of a dry land. Sushi is good if the head chief is making them, not so much when his son takes over. One of my regular place for sushi. Must go if you are Japanese.

Great traditional sushi. Best spicy tuna roll in Calgary (and I'd go as far to include Vancouver as well). I go quite often, and have always received great service. I have ate at all of Calgary's popular sushi spots (Zipang, Towa, El's Fusion, Sukiyaki House, Wa's, Globefish, etc), but I find that when the craving hits I always auto-pilot to the bar at Hiro's!
Good for lunch. I have no idea what I ate and am not hallucenating yet so I recommend it highly!
Good food for 20+ years. This place has been around for as long as I can remember working DT. It's always been good authentic sushi at reasonable prices. If you want fast service, sit at the sushi bar. Not only do you get your sushi / sashimi within 30 seconds of ordering, any kitchen orders seem to come out faster as well. Well-made and tasty.

Very very great sushi place, very fast service and delicious food. I recomend the raw oysters and miso soup. They are the best I've ever had! The sushi is GREAT! and it comes very fast.

We got in from a day of driving from Kelowna. I had a craving for ramen, but we couldn’t find parking in Kensington, so we decided to head downtown. I haven’t been to Sushi Hiro in a few years so we decided to drop in. The restaurant serves traditional Japanese food – no fusion here. My friend and I shared the Yosenabe hot pot. It included: clams, squid, whitefish, Japanese fish cake, chicken, salmon, enoki and oyster mushrooms, green onion and nappa cabbage. It came with additional broth and udon noodles. I think the broth was kombu dashi as there was a large piece of seaweed in the pot. There was also a side of yuzukoshu which I have never tasted before. It is fermented paste of yuzu peel, chili pepper and salt. It is very strong and a little goes a long way. The taste reminds me of Szechuan peppercorns with a tart finish. The hot pot was more than enough for two people. The service was good and they speak Japanese. It’s a refreshing change to find a traditional Japanese restaurant

We were very lucky to be able to catch the store at the time of their reopening. The quality of the food is great, our meal averaged out to about 25$ per person and it was just enough. I would recommend for anyone looking to enjoy delicious authentic Japanese cuisine .
If I could give this place more than 5 stars I would! As soon as you walk in the place is warm, welcoming and extremely clean. The service is second to none. Also the skill of the chef is on display as you can watch him work his sushi magic, the years upon years of dedication to his craft is certainly shown when you eat anything (and I mean anything!) on the menu. Everything you can possibly order is very fresh and handcrafted to perfection. 10/10 recommend! This seriously is the best sushi restaurant, anywhere, that I have ever tried!
Best sushi & sashimi in Calgary 😊! Its fresh, authentic and delicious. Their Shabu-shabu is tasty, and they also offer Omakase (if requested ahead of time.) We did Omakase for our anniversary, and we highly recommend it.

For traditional and authentic Japanese cuisine, this is one of the gems to look up in this city. The menu is sophisticated and does NOT offer the overdone maki sushi offered almost everywhere that's covered in tempura bits, mayonnaise, and sauce that you can't even taste the fish. Worth trying are the yamakake maguro, kawari mushi, shishamo, and unadon. The daily special on the shima aji nigiri sushi that they had on my visit was absolutely amazing. I also found this place's iterations on saba and tamago to be quite delicious. The aji tatake was out of stock but I really hope to try it next time (I hope soon!). Very much recommended.
All the staff were really nice and helpful, it was busy when I was there and I came without a reservation but they were very accommodating. The sushi was fantastic and probably the best price in Calgary. I'll be coming back!!
