Review Shikiji - Calgary

Elie Meyer
Best ramen in town. We have been coming here for 8 yrs and despite all the new ramen shops that have opened around town, this remains the most consistent and best bowl in town: broth is delicious, fatty pork melts in your mouth, cabbage has the perfect consistency

Wonderful atmosphere with friendly staff. A good amount of food variety (even for those who don't eat raw fish). The food portions are large for rolls and if they are not, they are surely unique in flavour/taste. The rice and noodle dishes are large portioned and delicious. Highly recommend this place for everything.

It seems like a typical izakaya, but the menu is more diverse than you'd typically find. They serve ramen to sushi and lots of things in between, and they do it all very well. The sushi is fresh and the service was great. The ramen broth was excellent, though the noodles were not the classic style I was expecting from an authentic restaurant like this (ramen noodles really have to be made fresh in-house to be right, and these don't seem to be). The portion size was a happy medium, so don't be afraid to order a selection of things! If you want just one thing (ramen, etc.) in my opinion it's better to go to a specialty restaurant, but if you want a good selection of Japanese dishes this is a great choice that won't disappoint no matter what you order.

Best Chili Goma Ramen I've had in Calgary, but not the best Ramen. Noodles were good but a bit soft, and there were too many chives for my liking (I was picking them out of my spoon near the end of the bowl). Service was great, prices seem fair for great quality ingredients, and the pork was amazing! Update 2018: visited a few times and I'm still a fan of their ramen. Tried their Miso ramen for the first time today and it was excellent, noodles we're perfect. Still a few too many veggies for my liking so might ask for fewer chives/scallions next time. Also tried some sushi (hamachi, blue fin, toro) and they were all great but I felt the hamachi and toro were very very small. Service was ok but they were pretty busy.

This place is for the great ramen. Soy ramen is really good and I personally love the Chili Goma ramen. It's a small, busy, noisy and not so fancy place. But they provide good and quick services. One of best ramen place in this city.

They have some real tasty ramen here! I went with their basic soy ramen with fatty bbq pork. The broth is rich and coats the firm noodles perfectly. It doesn't overpower with the salt so it highlights the pork and bok choy. All the toppings are simply there for texture (seaweed, scallions). Lastly, the pork melts in your mouth. It's soft, fatty, and flavourful. It actually isn't heavy to eat so you don't feel weighed down afterwards. Their takoyaki is also very good (tangy, sweet but still savoury). Service is average but it's not the reason you go here. Besides, maybe it's better they don't bother you. That way, you can focus on chowing down.

Let's just say, some foods are delicious, but some are just the below average. Delicious ones are: Mini Unagi bowl Cold Soba Does not recommend: 1) Miso ramen - noodles has great texture and bite, but soup is too thick and overpowering. 2) Nigiri and possibly any raw cut fish, horribly cut, looks great but doesn't know how to cut a fish for Nigiri. The texture of the cut is stringy, and the entire fish was stuck and hanging on my teeth. Obviously the sushi chief has never tasted the food he makes. 3) As we were leaving to pay, we saw some cute Chinese canned like bottled sake as shown in the picture, was thinking of purchasing it to take home to enjoy, apparently if you put it right at the cashier counter with price, to my understanding it could be purchased to take home. If they don't want it to be sold to be taken out, then put it behind the counter, where it's unreachable, and price shown only in the restaurant's menu, to be enjoyed only within. Back in the days my Japanese friend's parents used to own this restaurant, it was amazing, I used to enjoy coming here onces ever 2 weeks. After it changed owners both service, and quality of foods downgraded tremendously. Service was slacking, and the short-haired lady that host, and as a cashier never thanked us as we were leaving, and was rude. I don't recommend this place, unless you are desperately wanting cold soba. I give them credit for making a good cold soba.

Tried this place out the other day. The menus is sushi, ramen, udon, and a few other Japanese dishes. Tried the BBQ ramen and the seafood ramen, both are excellent. The restaurant has a collection chilled out vide going due to the music. There is parking on the south side of the building in the parking lot next to the Madison apartment. Akashi beer is 6 dollars for a small, and 11 for a large. I thought this to be reasonable priced. Green tea is 1.50 a person. They make awesome takoyaki!

We used to come to this restaurant a lot more and were disappointed with how it has changed. The decor has deteriorated and so had the food.
Jessica Tran
Shikiji has best ramen in Calgary and the sushi menu is awesome too! The alcoholic options are authentic and I love the traditional Japanese feel to everything.
Annie Stoodley
The best matcha tiramisu!!! I am definitely coming back for it, ramen was okay iv had better but the dessert was great 😋
Jenna
Came here for Mother’s Day lunch. I used to love the ramen here but it’s pretty mediocre now compared to the other ramen places in Calgary!
Catherine
Ramen was rich and tasty, more sophisticated than the traditional ramen, reminded me of Shiki Menya but actually tasted better as the soup was piping hot. it would be perfect if the noodle could be a little bit softer, but not a big problem. Shrimp Tempura was not bad, either.
Food Fiend YYC
Ramen is quite good, sushi is okay. Great variety of items on the menu - something for everyone. I found the famous "Chili Goma" ramen to be far too heavy and oily, but not lacking in flavor. Too much for me! I prefer the BBQ pork ramen and the miso ramen. Very good ramen for Calgary standards. The sushi seems to be the Westernized roll-heavy varieties, overpriced and lacking in quality. I find much better value in their ramen.

This USED TO BE my favourite place for udon and donburi until now! They served us the Shikiji Udon dish that has gone bad!!! At first we though the sauce was just too overpowering with vinegar (and the alcohol from the fermentation) but about half way through we realized the sauce had actually gone bad!! My bf got sick from the dish afterwards. We didn't notify the server since we were half way through already and didn't wanna wait for another dish... but quality ain't there anymore. The katsu donburi was so soupy it was even like what it used to be. Very disappointed and won't be coming back.

Ok wow! I've just died and gone to ramen 🍜 heaven!! I ordered one of the popular dishes; the Chili Ramen and it was fabulous! It didn't have the egg in it but who cares when it's as magnificent as this?! The broth: homemade and so flavourful. ✅ Ingredients are primo. Just wow!
The service is 100% on point and the establishment is very clean and modern 👍🏼 OH Yes I will be back!!

I've been here twice now for lunch and both times I've had the Chili Goma Ramen and it was excellent both times. This was a dish that I would recommend to anyone if you like mildly spicy food. The place is always busy at lunch but the service has always been friendly and efficient. I will definitely go back to try other offerings.
Food Maven
We enjoy their ramen. Once we also ordered their gyoza dumplings. I enjoy their BBQ pork ramen with pork belly and my husband likes that and the chilli goma. The servings are generous and tasty. I like the toasted sesames that they serve on the side with a mortar and pestle so you can grind it before adding to your soup. They also serve garlic chips and a chilli spice.
Lap Chi Duong
I think this was the first ramen shop in Calgary. Not the best ramen but not the worst. Just right in the middle the location is perfect and parking on Center street. Their noodle is slightly on he chewy side but over all not bad.
Kevin Nelson
Came highly recommend. Gyoza was unique, had a really strong flavor that I couldn't put my finger on, had the chili goma Ramen and it was pretty delicious. Would recommend.
Mitchel
Love this place. Ive been a return customer for over 15 years and the food and service is consistently excellent. If I'm craving soul food their soups always deliver, and if I'm craving sushi it is always fresh. This is something that many Japanese restaurants fail at, but where shikiji shines. Great appetizers. Crispy tempura and karage. Friendly staff and a warm vibe.
Neltron
Friendly staff and good ambiance. It was quite busy but we were able to get a table near the back and I was craving ramen. I got the a shio ramen and my hubby got the special spicy soy ramen. The staff brought out fried garlic chips, chili pepper and chili oil to accompany the ramen which was nice. I thought my shio ramen had a little bit too much green onion and seaweed it in. The broth was a bit too salty for my liking.
Victoria Nguyen
Such mediocre food. Came here with high hopes but it was expensive for what it is. Its overhyped for nothing. Service was meh. Got the chili goma and it was okay. Nothing special though.
No toppings on it though. Costed 5.00 more for ONE extra piece of cha shu. and then 3.00 EACH for green tea. What the heck. Never coming here again.
Jessica Tong
After reading all the positive reviews on Shikiji, I was very disappointed with their ramen. The Miso Ramen was the least-authentic ramen bowl I've ever had. The broth was thin and lacked depth and richness. There were also far too many herbs and raw vegetables swimming in the broth (onions, green onions, ginger, cabbage, carrots, bean sprouts, etc.) that it made it somewhat medicinal-tasting. It was also strange that the ramen didn't come with a traditional marinated egg or wakame. Overall, the ramen lacked Japanese flavours and was, at best, an average bowl of noodles.
Afoodiesguide403
Heard all the hype of this place and decided to give it a try. The ramen was average at best. The noodle was really good but the broth definitely lacked flavour. To be honest, I'll most likely order sushi next time.
Michelle Bjorndalen
I love the chili goma ramen. Sometimes it is a little tooo salty but not enough to put me off of it, I always seem to come back! I have had the buckwheat noodle dish and also the sushi and ika is tasty too. All around I have never had a negative experience here. One time we celebrated my friends birthday here, they accommodated our large group and the food was on point, as per usual.
Katchii
Best Ramen I've ever had! Price is a bit higher but it's worth it! It's also worth the drive! I highly recommend this place if your craving Japanesse food specially ramen try the chili one!
Waiwai
On my recent visit, I was disappointed by the lack of toppings on my ramen. Broth was not as flavorful as past visits over the past 3 years. Used to come here every time I visit Calgary, sadly now I'll need to look elsewhere for my ramen fix.
DN
Amazing food and service, their pork katsu curry has me continuously returning. The service is also very good. Food comes out hot and delicious.
Emma Smith
Decent Japanese food in town. We go here when we crave Japanese noodle. It used to have good food all around but the quality of sushi has gone down in the past few years..

First time i have been here, went with a couple of friends for lunch, its a nice small place, tastefully decorated , easy to move around in, I liked the colour scheme , we all ordered the Chili Goma Raman, and a Tuna Poke' to start, it was all excellent and I enjoyed it, it was just right, cooked perfect seasoned perfect, i certainly will be back.

Exceptional restaurant ran by dedicated people with a careful eye to detail. I've had the pleasure of eating at Shikiji about 40 times and I've never left disappointed. The chili goma ramen is my favourite item. Sushi is pretty good and my favourite comfort item is the Katsu curry don. I've tried most of the menu and a quite a few different specials/ features they have had The servers are always really nice and welcoming. They have good drinks and interesting features. What's not to like? I would choose to come here over almost any fine dining or high price restaurant in the city time and time again.

Food: Average
Service: Below average. Need to remind them about your order.
Remember to give enough tips otherwise they will give you attitude.
Gummi_x
Very very sad that they changed the menu and took off the sashimi set. Now you have to order by individual pieces and is expensive. The rolls are good, we really enjoy the crispy tempura sashimi roll.

Enjoyable. We met our nephews for lunch here. Its a nice warm venue with quiet, pleasant service, perfect on a cool, drizzly day. Our group tried a couple of different ramen and a couple of different bentos. I chose the soy ramen with extra kimchi. Loved the broth, the pork toro and the kimchi. Yummy lunch. My companions were similarly pleased with their choices as well. The bentos are large and complete; the sushi fresh, the teriyaki delicious. Its a busy restaurant with many people coming for lunch on a Saturday. You should too. Thanks Shikiji!

Amazing ramen. The Chili Goma makes my mouth water just thinking about it. And the portions are big so you have enough to take home and enjoy later. My favorite ramen place in Calgary.
Alex
I have a special fondness for sushi and other Japanese cuisine, thanks to my years living in Vancouver during undergrad. My sushi cravings generally intensify as I spend more and more time away from the Coast and this weekend was no exception. After perusing Zomato I decided to check out Shikiji Japanese Noodles and Sushi restaurant.
Mish
I love ramen and Japanese food in general but the ramen here is not as good as I thought it would be. The broth is very salty and doesn't taste fresh nor authentic. I had the chili goma ramen. Average at best.
Emily Donovan
Sushi was delicious. My entire family loved it.
The soups were amazing, I had a simple udon but my 4 family members each chose different flavours. We each loved them but felt dumb because we hadn't realized how wonderfully HUGE the bowls were... we had already ordered an insane amount of sushi and reconsidered it as soon as we saw the soups.
Overall, loved it. Staff are kind, moderately attentive. Noodles were great and although the sushi list is limited the rolls are absolutely delicious.
Karen
Shikiji is famous for its Chili Goma Ramen and this is usually the only thing I get when I visit and it's plenty of food. I like to add the pork toro, which is the fattier cut of the pork. The ramen is $15 and it is $4.50 to add the pork, so I believe it is a more expensive ramen compared to a place like Muku, however this sesame based broth is so rich and flavourful you really are getting your fill of food. The service here is amazing and they are such nice people. This place never disappoints and you leave feeling way too full.
Nick Roth
I've been coming here since this place opened and have never been disappointed. The food, the service the ambiance are all exceptional. Reservations are recommended =)

My friends and I went to shikiji for lunch, ordered a cold soba which wasn't very great. We didn't get much service either. When we were going to pay, we were paying separately. My friend didn't feel the need to pay tip because we didn't get much service and the food wasn't that great, but the lady yelled at my friend asking why she wasn't paying tip. She was extremely rude to us, and stared at my friend until she paid tip, extremely unprofessional. Poor customer service.

What a disappointment! Do not even think of going near by this place. Worst service ever. Waited for an hour, they messed up with the waiting list. Please do not waste your time and money. Not sure about others who gave a high ratings, but from an asian who spent 5 years in Japan, the noodles aren't even so so. Soup does not taste anything. I recommend a $.99 instant noodle over the junks they sell here.
Christopher Zadworny
I have been here many times, the Udon and quality of the sushi is one of the main reasons I keep coming back. I can eat their tempura shrimp as a meal onto itself...
Seafoodie
Lets start out by by saying the sashimi here was probably some of the best I've ever had!!. The rolls however, were very so-so for the variety and price, not much flavor or quality. The waitress wasn't very polite and seemed to judge me and my boyfriend but did her job. We ordered the salmon and tuna sashimi and it was truly cut and selected with great skill. Will come again but probably won't get any rolls.

Never have I ever encountered such abhorrent customer service in my life which has prompted me to post my first restaurant review. Firstly, I do have to say that the food is pretty good considering the lack of ramen and sushi options in Calgary and Edmonton. However, I will never step foot into this establishment again due to the utter disrespect my family received from Jenna on front desk duty. She was asian with blonde hair if you'd like to avoid her.

We ordered the "sushi tray for one" tonight and I was pretty excited to have the special scallop that was supposed to come with the order. When received, I noticed that it was missing (to which I recalled the same thing happened last time I ordered it). We proceeded to wave down our waiter to ask why it was missing to which he brought our tray back to the kitchen for clarification. He ended up bringing it back with the special scallop and profusely apologized for the mistake and neglecting to let us know of the change prior to ordering.

AFTER my sister paid for the bill at the front desk, Jenna at the front desk told my sister that she should respect the service people at Shikiji more. I was utterly shocked to hear this because we were nothing but polite to our server and was appreciative that he acknowledged his mistake. I think it takes a lot of hubris and cowardice to antagonize a long time customer like Jenna did post-payment. I mean if you have the guts to accuse someone of treating your colleague poorly, stand up for him/her then and there, not after someone has paid the bill and tipped.

She said that the kitchen had full authority to change items on the menu at whim and I should have taken notice of the fine print on the menu. She also said that if I really wanted the special scallop so bad I should've confirmed with the waiter while ordering. First of all, when I look at a menu I do not cross-examine every line item. Secondly, having that policy is fine and well, but if something is going to be changed (arbitrarily it also seems because the special scallop was very fresh tonight.), that should be verbally communicated to the customer while ordering. Jenna was EXTREMELY rude when I confronted her disrespect towards my sister. I say this because she was smirking, argumentative, and not taking my concern seriously. She even invited me to write an online review so I did. Jenna also said that technically the tray could come with completely different fish than indicated on the menu at any time. If that is the case, the menu should just say it comes with assorted fish (like it happens to be on your ONLINE menu).

I recommend management to take action and teach your front staff to respect loyal clientele. I have been supporting this restaurant for the last 6 years and it is a frequent stop for many of my business lunch meetings. In the meantime, I will no longer be visiting Shikiji and will actively express my negative experience to my business partners, centres of influences, clients, and friends and family. I am sure other sushi establishments will be happy to have our businesses.

Changed to whole wheat ramen. If you've always really liked shikiji's ramen, you will find that it has gone 180 from great to terrible. It is now dark and chewy because it's whole wheat; the worst spin on an original that was already perfect. I dont know what else has been changed to whole wheat. Very disappointed and will not go back.
Shirley Huynh
Fanciest ramen I've ever had... I'm used to eating instant noodles, but these instant noodles came with a quail egg!!! Talk about gourmet cheap eats!!!!

Takoyaki was very cheesy. Ramen was different.... Fancier than I'm used to. I prefer normal cheap ramen, but if I'm ever feeling like a date night, I'll def think of this place.
Yolanda Chang
Some good things, some just okay about Shikiji. I went there for lunch today to try their miso ramen. The pork was tender and delicious and the portions are very generous for the price overall. Unfortunately, the noodles I had were a little bit too chewy for my taste and I was surprised that the ramen didn't come with a soft boiled egg like most other places do.

My mom had the bento which she thought was okay, but the rice wasn't to her taste (a bit on the dry side). Still, the value of the bento is great, because you get a lot of food.

We had the tuna and sashimi tataki which was excellent, however. The service was also impeccable. Would return, but probably not for ramen.
A.D.
Delicious. Very nice. Tasty. Yum. What else can I say. I've been on a ramen kick the last few weeks and Shikiji is possibly the tops of what I've had. Make sure to get a reso thiugh as it fills up quick. Folks know it's good.
Ktrnad
The sashimi was fresh but the rolls tasted bland. My brothers really liked their ramen and the katsu don w/ extra cheese. The beef tataki also taster very bland.
Dan Parker
This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. I go there often and the service and food has been consistently good. They do get busy so if you are going with a group, it is a good idea to make a reservation or you may have to wait. The sushi is good but my personal favorite is the chili goma ramen. The portion is huge and it is delicious. I also would highly recommend their gyoza. The dipping sauce it comes with is great.
Yunyun.z
I love the cold soba here. I can say it is the best i have ever tried in town! The lunch special is pretty good too. But make sure you make a reservation for your lunch, or you need to expect 20-30 mins wait time.
Ruotao Tang
Good Ramen, with plenty of potential to improve.
My wife has been a super fan of Ramen for years, thus when she said this place is about 75 percent as good as Sansotei Ramen in Toronto, I chose to trust her judgement. My personal favorite is the fatty BBQ pork. Their noodle is where a little improvement can really make a difference.
RaynaP
Went there for an early dinner so didn't need a reservation. Hostess and server were all courteous and friendly, service was quite prompt. Especially enjoyed their takoyaki appetizer (the octopus pieces were quite tender instead of gummy) which had hint of ginger in the batter to neutralise the potential fishy smell that could have come from the octopus. Vegetable gyoza didn't quite taste like our expectations, and relied too much on the natural flavour of vegetables in the dumpling to cut through the oil. It was perfectly cooked, but the vegetables were overwhelmed by the oil and soy sauce. Found the broth for both soy and miso ramen on the salty side, but their fatty bbq pork was well-seasoned and buttery.
Susan
Not sure when Shikiji decided to only use whole wheat ramen and not mention it in the menu, but there isn't even an option to get anything but. I was very disappointed as their goma ramen was one of the items I've always gone back for. The whole wheat version as you can imagine is darker and chewier. I had a friend that thought it was soba, ha. Will not go back.
Maki Hutchison
Fantastic food. Sushi and sashimi is also fresh and delicious. Really friendly staff, and a great location. I'm also a big fan of Shikiji's Ramen bowls, and love their lunch bento box combos, good price for lots of food!
Food4thoughtz
I did like this spot but I found the ramen to be on the saltier side. The decor is cute and the staff are friendly. We also had gyozas which tasted like everywhere else.
Catvsfood
The place is small but cozy, they already have a lot of people at the opening time.
I had the shio ramen. Although knowing it is on the salty side, you need water to accompany this relatively delicious meal.
We were full and satisfied.
Ryan Chen
My favorite is the hot Shikiji udon/soba. I like the sansai vegetables, which aren't common here. The fried bean curd complements very well also. The price may seem a little higher, but you get some fried tempura as well - fills you up. The chili goma ramen is pretty good too. Unfortunately, the miso ramen is not good.
Snacker
I have mixed feelings after hearing rumours that the owner is Chinese. Nonetheless the ramen with the sesame broth is delicious. A must have here.
Herb
Amazing Shikiji udon. $17 is not cheap but it was so good I would probably eat it everyday. I love a basic bowl of Marukame udon but this fancy stuff was really good too. I consider this the best in Calgary.
Nobody In Particular
I would have to say that this is my favorite Ramen place in the city. I like my soup broth spicy but I find chili goma is usually too thick for my liking so what I'll do here is order the miso broth and add kimchi to it. My husband loves their chili goma though. The only downside to the goma is that it comes with chopped up pork instead of the fatty pork slices, which I love.I'm not giving this place a 5 out of 5 because other than the ramen, nothing else on the menu stands out. Just another sushi restaurant otherwise.
Aaron
Not being a native to Calgary I decided to just take the plunge and try this place out. I had the Shio Ramen and boy was it delicious. The best part of the Ramen were the pieces of fatty pork belly. The portion size is pretty big which I don't have a problem with. They even give you a small portion of toasted sesame seeds which you can grind down and add to your ramen. My girlfriend ordered a bento box and for $14 with all the food crammed in, it was amazing value. Overall very tasty food and I would return.

Whenever anyone asks me what's the best place for sushi in Calgary? It's Shikiji. Their food really shines as arguably the best here. No matter what you order from sushi, grill, to ramen, Shikiji does an exceptional job on all of it. Their staff are experienced and efficient, and the restaurant is a tad small but still lovely. This place has been my family's favourite for a couple years now.
Pinklemonadeandpearls
This soup has an impeccable blend of robust flavours with a right amount of heat that still allows you to carry a conversation. It also has a nice balance of texture from the chewiness of the noodles and the crunch from the peanuts.
Munchkinmumbles
Shikiji Is a Japanese Noodle and Sushi place. John and I have been to this restaurant twice (the second time being Wedensday night) and have loved it both times. We have had both their Noodle soups and their sushi and have only really good things to say. So let me recap our eats last night

FAVORITE SPOT!. I have been a regular customer for years now, they are one of my favorite overall restaurants in Calgary. Great spot for Japanese food, their menu offers a wide variety of dishes! They are best known for their ramen and for good reason!

The Chili Goma Ramen is fantastic! The presentation is beautiful and the soup is packed with so much flavour. I have tried many bowls of ramen...the only place that rivals this dish exists in Japan!

After only trying the Chili Goma, I decided to try other items on the menu and I have not been disappointed. The BBQ Pork Ramen is delicious! If you order this dish...you must order it with the fatty pork slices. Yes, not the healthiest choice, but it's the best! My only criticism would be that sometimes the soup can be a bit salty (just drink more Japanese beer!)

The Tako Yaki on the appetizer list is awesome! Make sure to that out, if you are comfortable trying octopus. The sushi list is great, there is a wide variety and the presentation is always done well.

Try the Autumn Roll, it's not on the menu and you will only see it once a year on the feature menu. But they are willing to make it if you order it. It combines sweet potato tempura, salmon, and avocado and it's a very delicious combo!

The portions are great, you will not leave the restaurant hungry. And the prices are reasonable.

The staff are amazing! Super nice and attentive, you are never left wondering where your server is. Also, the place gets busy, but you will not feel rushed to eat quickly. Unless there are reservations, in which they inform you before you sit down.

Highly recommend this restaurant to everyone!
Kkol
Chili Goma ramen is changed!. Chili Goma ramen was only reason I liked Shikiji but I found something was changed on their ramen today.
It used to be peanutish soup but now it's more like Miso flavor...and noodle is more thicky too. My husband noticed meat taste different too.
Change is not a bad thing but I miss old Chili Goma ramen.
I won't crave their ramen anymore from now on.
Other than Chili Goma ramen, their food is nothing special.
Kathy L
Food is way too salty. Service is alright. We came about 20 min before their closing time at 2. We saw at least 5 group of people coming in and they said they were closed. We just don't believe in turning down business. Food was too salty. We had BC roll, teriyaki chicken with rice, miso soup and shikiji soba. None of those were right to the taste. I had to drink a ton of water when we got home. I can actually feel the bitterness of salt in their food. If you really in need of sodium, I guess you should go there. For me, I'm never coming back.
Lisa Nguyen
Fresh sushi, ramen wasn't too bad. I've heard lots of good reviews from bloggers to try this place out and it was quite busy on a Monday night! I enjoyed my meal and I'm glad I gave it a shot but I'm hoping to try their sister restaurant Shiki Menya and see how it compares!

Miso Ramen. Tasteless with a thick layer of grease I could stir away.

-----23 Mar, 2015-----

Octopus Balls. Not bad

-----23 Mar, 2015-----

I had hear great things about the ramen here from multiple people so I decided to try it. I was quite disappointed. The pork belly was to die for but that was where the positive ended. The soup base was flavourless and had about 1 cm of grease on top. There were so many veggies I could hardly find the noodles, which tasted more like udon noodles. Needless to say it did not live up to the hype and I won't be returning.
Chris Matthew
Ramen test. Heard so many good reviews about the ramen here, so I decided to try it. I don't mind it but definitely not a favourite. Got the soy ramen and there was not much in the bowl for $12. The pork was good and so was the texture of the ramen. One piece of bok choy and lots of green onions. The soup base was the most unfortunate part and can only be described as nothing special at best. Overall I can buy a package of Japanese ramen noodle that comes with packaged soup base, add my own ingredients and it can taste better.

Oct 2015:Dropped in tonight without a reservation and lucked out, they had a table for us. The Autumn Roll is SOOO good. Also ordered the Avacodo Tempura Roll, melt in your mouth good! As usual, service was top notch and the food outstanding. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Best sushi in Calgary.. I'm in a writing mood today so thought I'd catch up on reviews.
I actually eat at Shikiji quite regularly and the biggest plus about this restaurant is the consistency. The food is ALWAYS good and service the same. I've eaten at a lot of Japanese/sushi restaurants in Calgary and this place is my benchmark to measure others to. I've seen comments on here saying the sushi is low quality, definitely not what I've found. The rice is always perfect and the sushi fresh and tasty. We've also tasted a majority of other items off the menu and found them just as good. One exception I might say is the squid appetizer is sometimes overdone.
As for the service I always find it excellent. I can't say we've ever experienced sub par service here at all. Just make sure you make reservations.

MSG, MSG, MSG. After ate ramen my mouth really really needs a ton of water. Guess MSG a lots ...

Never been disappointed. Have been going here for years. I think it's one of the best sushi places in the city. The lunch menu is a bargain for what you get. The Raman soups are one of the best in the city and rivals some vancouver places I have tried.
The food is beautifully plated. The service has always been good.
Parking is on the side of building .
Love this place, never been disappointed.

Not good.
My ramen soup tasted like it was salt water.
No actually just salt with some water added.
The donburi was dry.
The takoyaki was good.
Low quality sushi. Uncomfortable seats.

Great ramen and quality sushi. Love the spicy goma ramen....the broth is very flavourful but I wished there was more meat included (like pork belly, perhaps!). Sushi is good quality..fish is fresh and rice doesn't fall apart after you take the first bite. My hubby likes the udon and soba noodles there too. We'be been here many times and will continue to do so. Service is good too and you need reservations for dinner especially Friday thru Sunday.

Chilli Goma Ramen. Wonderful - top ten all-time soup

My Top 3 ramen places in Calgary. I think this is #2, I still think Muku is #1 for cramped atmosphere which enhances the authenticity of a ramen place.

Shikiji is a good well-rounded place with sushi and ramen - but come here mainly for ramen :) It was a hidden gem a few years ago but now it is a well known fact that this place kicks ass. In fact, they opened Shiki Menya which I wrote in the other review as meh... just come to Shikiji and call it a day.

#1. Muku

#2. Shikiji

#3. Shiki Menya

Serves ENDANGERED SPECIES. Horrible customer service.. Shikiji was serving ENDANGERED SPECIES (bluefin tuna) as their sushi special tonight.

My husband and I went to Shikiji tonight and received terrible customer service. The waiter came to our table and told us about their specials, including bluefin tuna sashimi. Since this was the species featured in the documentary about overfishing practices around the world, "The End of the Line", and also the cult classic 'Jiro Dreams of Sushi", I asked, "Isn't that an endangered species"? The waiter said he didn't know anything about that, but in his opinion, 'everything's going to be endangered anyways'. I asked twice where they sourced the fish, and he tried to deflect my question by asking 'what is ethical and what is unethical anyways'? We decided to leave the restaurant after his rude and nihilistic behaviour, at which he wouldn't even let us peacefully leave. He tried one last time to stop us, saying "I admire your beliefs, but if you understood the world, you would think differently". UNBELIEVABLE.

The server was incredibly rude, and had no respect for the planet or his customers, and also no knowledge of what he was serving. This experience was unforgiveable - we will never go back.

Num nums. Just got back from Shikiji. They were unbelievably busy. I was there by myself and kind of feel bad for taking up a table for two. I never felt rushed at all although I as trying to eat quickly to free up the table for the next patrons. The server still managed to fill up my water several times and ask how my meal was. Amazing ramen and rockstar service. I can't wait to return for my next ramen fix.

25% tips?? not in this way. Me and my co-woker went for lunch, and the bill was $24, I gave the cashier $30, she asked me if I need any change, 2 raman for 25% tips???

then she gave me one $5 bill and some quarters, I asked her to break the $5, she was so surprised , looked at me and asked is there has anything wrong with the service??

I am ok to give the tips , but not in this way.

Waitress not quite impressed. I've been there 3 times and every time i had the same problem, waitresses. I get that the restaurant is busy and so on, but customers should not be treated like they're begging for the food lol. Last time, me and my friends, we just finished a sport tournament and we were all in sweat pants craving for ramen. My friends decided they want to try this place and i warned them abt the service, but no one seemed to care at first. However, the waitress we got (white girl with a little russian accent maybe) proved my point onve again lol. She treated us like we're lower class people, for example talking to us without making eye contact, her gesture and tone told that she doesnt want to serve us lol. I think this restaurant is just a hip. there are other ramen places that serve better food and service in Calgary, i think

Too salty ramen. We had dinner last night in Shikiji since the reviews was good. We are really disappointed with the miso & barbecue ramen TOO SALTY.
Sara Duong
Didnt even get a chance to try the food. Terrible service, we needed a table for 5 and the waitress seemed extremely lazy. They put absolutely no effort in accommodating their guests.

The service sucks like a vacuum.

Craving sushi? Go to Shikiji!. After trying several sushi restaurants in Calgary, Shikiji is now my go-to restaurant for fresh sushi at a reasonable price. Their takoyaki and chilli goma ramen are pretty good too.

Gone downhill but still good!. This is probably one of Caglarians' favorite Japanese restaurants in town. They have good ramen and katsu dishes. The sushi here though aren't really "sushi." The sushi dishes they serve is quite far from the proper Japanese sushi. They serve what we call "rolls." Nothing against it and their selection is pretty tasty. But if you're looking for some quality fish and proper handling of them, I don't recommend it. Their lunch bento box is also great. It comes in a very handy box, and they're quite delicious, but perhaps a little overpriced. I've heard that Shikiji's had some replacements of their kitchen staffs and, honestly, the food has gone a little downhill. However, it is still a good location.

Best ramen in the city!. I go here frequently for lunch, I've never been disappointed with the service or the food. The ramen is the best I have ever had in the city, my favourite is the Chilli Goma! The sushi they have is also excellent, seems to be high quality and well made food. Recommend to everyone!

Best Sushi in Town!. Great service! Food is always so fresh and delicious.

The best quality sushi in Calgary. Hands down. However, the place is not so good, it is small, noisy with not so comfortable tables and chairs.

Go for the Chili Goma Ramen. What was once a special item that was only supposed to be temporary has become a staple and a major reason I introduce people to Shikiji. The Chili Goma Ramen is great, you can get it spicy or medium, either way it will likely have your nose sniffeling a bit. I have yet to introduce this to someone who didn't enjoy it and that's over a dozen people.
They have good Sushi and Sashimi, with occasional special like Wild BlueFin Tuna and other seasonal and limited items. Sometimes they offer an experimental taster dish as a pre-appy. Even though I can be somewhat picky with briney , pickled or vinegary items, I never pass up the chance to try some new creation offered.
I don't eat rolls so cannot offer opinion, but my friends say they are also good.

Traditional feel to the decor and preparation. The staff is attentive and pleasant.

Be sure to make a reservation if going at noon on a weekday, and yoi may need to park one block over if it's busy.

Great sushi. Been here a few times and never had a bad experience with the food or customer service. I've ordered many different sushi rolls and sashimi and loved them all. I will definitely go back.

On the fence.... Decided to try on a cold Sundy night which is perfect time for some ramen. First of all I hate when restaurants put lemon in the water...it's like they are trying to hide bad taste or something. Do they wash the lemons? Anyway, just me being paranoid. Hd the chili go a ramen, and it was delicious. Filled with MSG, but delicious. Hubby had the Nebayaki udon and it was okay. The udon and soup at ith good, but the tempura was greasy and heavily battered. Now the rolls for the kids...California roll, bland bland and bland. The cucumber roll fire better but was so heavily coated in sesame seeds it ruined the texture. The worst has to be spicy scallop roll. Now scallop is already a very delicate seafood with not a lot of taste, now leave out any mayo, seasoning, and add a HUGE dollop to siricha on it...it was horrible. I love picy food, but I didn't pay it eat super spicy rice! There's absolutely no way you can taste any scallop at all. Service was good, water was refilled constantly, so not sure if I would come back.

Won't be back.. Food was pretty good and satisfied what we were craving but there's a bit of a pretentious vibe. One of us ordered a pot of green tea and the waitress refused to bring us a second teacup, stating that each person must be charged separately for tea and that the pot cannot be shared. In the end, over half the pot was leftover (not many people are able to drink a whole pot of tea with dinner). We asked for hot sauce and our waitress returned with no more than 1 tablespoon of sriracha sauce, boasting that they normally charge extra for hot sauce but that she was providing it for free this time. Atmosphere is nice, food is decent, and they have free parking in an adjacent lot - all good things, but the rigid "rules" and unnecessary money grabbers are reasons to get your Japanese fix somewhere else.

Best Ramen Ever!. I've always went to Shikiji for the sushi for many many years. Great service, great atmosphere! It wasn't until November of 2013 did I discover their delicious ramen- the Chili Goma Ramen. All I can say is that I've gone back 6 times for the Chili Goma Ramen 6 times since January- 4 times with my coworker (My coworker loves spicy food and I got her completely hooked on this! She's been asking me to go every time. Not going to lie, it was an evil plan from the start because we work in DT and she drives to work!! To defend myself, I did warn her about how delicious it was!), once with a couple of friends, and another time with my bf.

I would definitely recommend making reservations as the place is really tiny. They have incredible and consistent service.

I can't wait until Shiki Menya to open up in Bridgeland (same owner), supposed to be sometime this month! I bet there will be pretty tasty ramen there too!! Looking forward to it!

Good ramen. The chili goma ramen is the lunch you need to recover from a late night. Wonderful!

Very good. I've been here a handful of times and have never had a bad experience. The ramen is top-notch and very plentiful, both in quantity and in flavour. It reminds me of the hole-in-the-wall ramen shops back in Tokyo! My favourite menu item, though, is the katsu curry don!! (katsu is deep-fried pork cutlet) For those who have not tried Japanese-style curry, it's much different than Thai or Indian. I, personally, can't get enough of Japanese curry and to find it here (GOOD, at that), is nearly impossible. But Shikiji's is excellent. If you've never tried it, you should! I'll be back for sure to get my katsu curry fill!

The miso ramen and the tofu appy, both so good!! Best ramen in calgary

I wrote the below review just over 2 years ago and I still think this is one of the best original Japanese restaurants in Calgary. They maintain their consistency in quality and service. I still love their fatty pork in their ramens and the creamy scallop is especially my fave because they pack that with masago rather than just a garnish. The sushi always tastes fresh. Make sure you call in advance during peak hours for a reso or if they're closing early.

Jan 3, 2014
One of the best original Japanese restaurants in Calgary. Serving tasty ramen and fresh sushi! The restaurant is small but service is always fast.

Best Japanese food in calgary n most authentic, being to Japan n staying there helps n this is the only place where I can get certain dishes that taste just like they do in Japan ex: takoyaki and ramen

They are strange. The waitress brought me tea when I didn't ask for it, then charged me for it. I asked for spicy sushi, and instead of spicy sauce in the sushi, or spicy mayonnaise on top, they put a glob of chili sauce on the top. It was so weird. It is like no other sushi place I've been to, in a bad way.

Ramen... the usual msg. Good bowl of ramen, very tasty but had to have a post- m.s.g sleep after. Asked if they add msg and they said there is some in the ingredients - eg. the soya sauce which is unavoidable.... though it def is possible to find non-msg soya sauce.. Nice restaurant though, good vibes. I want to try the sushi next.

So tasty!. Have been here numerous times and each time the quality is high. Have had the ramen, soba, yakitora, and sushi. All are phenomenal. Even got takeout once and you can certainly tell they have a lot of pride in what they do. The takeout was put together with so much care and effort. SO DELICIOUS! Everything. This place is a favourite.

I've been back to Shikiji, since my wife is such a fan.
We now specifically ask for the soft noodle.
No more al dente and soup base taste better than a year ago.
I will come back.
Shir
Hands down best ramen in town!. LOVE the chili-goma ramen...prepare to be STUFFED. Have tried quite a few other places, none measured up, if you're looking for a super flavorful, full bodied broth - this is where you'll find it!
