Shikiji has best ramen in Calgary and the sushi menu is awesome too! The alcoholic options are authentic and I love the traditional Japanese feel to everything.
The best matcha tiramisu!!! I am definitely coming back for it, ramen was okay iv had better but the dessert was great 😋
Ramen was rich and tasty, more sophisticated than the traditional ramen, reminded me of Shiki Menya but actually tasted better as the soup was piping hot. it would be perfect if the noodle could be a little bit softer, but not a big problem. Shrimp Tempura was not bad, either.
Ok wow! I've just died and gone to ramen 🍜 heaven!! I ordered one of the popular dishes; the Chili Ramen and it was fabulous! It didn't have the egg in it but who cares when it's as magnificent as this?! The broth: homemade and so flavourful. ✅ Ingredients are primo. Just wow!
The service is 100% on point and the establishment is very clean and modern 👍🏼 OH Yes I will be back!!
I've been here twice now for lunch and both times I've had the Chili Goma Ramen and it was excellent both times. This was a dish that I would recommend to anyone if you like mildly spicy food. The place is always busy at lunch but the service has always been friendly and efficient. I will definitely go back to try other offerings.
We enjoy their ramen. Once we also ordered their gyoza dumplings. I enjoy their BBQ pork ramen with pork belly and my husband likes that and the chilli goma. The servings are generous and tasty. I like the toasted sesames that they serve on the side with a mortar and pestle so you can grind it before adding to your soup. They also serve garlic chips and a chilli spice.
I think this was the first ramen shop in Calgary. Not the best ramen but not the worst. Just right in the middle the location is perfect and parking on Center street. Their noodle is slightly on he chewy side but over all not bad.
Came highly recommend. Gyoza was unique, had a really strong flavor that I couldn't put my finger on, had the chili goma Ramen and it was pretty delicious. Would recommend.
Love this place. Ive been a return customer for over 15 years and the food and service is consistently excellent. If I'm craving soul food their soups always deliver, and if I'm craving sushi it is always fresh. This is something that many Japanese restaurants fail at, but where shikiji shines. Great appetizers. Crispy tempura and karage. Friendly staff and a warm vibe.
Friendly staff and good ambiance. It was quite busy but we were able to get a table near the back and I was craving ramen. I got the a shio ramen and my hubby got the special spicy soy ramen. The staff brought out fried garlic chips, chili pepper and chili oil to accompany the ramen which was nice. I thought my shio ramen had a little bit too much green onion and seaweed it in. The broth was a bit too salty for my liking.
I love the chili goma ramen. Sometimes it is a little tooo salty but not enough to put me off of it, I always seem to come back! I have had the buckwheat noodle dish and also the sushi and ika is tasty too. All around I have never had a negative experience here. One time we celebrated my friends birthday here, they accommodated our large group and the food was on point, as per usual.
Best Ramen I've ever had! Price is a bit higher but it's worth it! It's also worth the drive! I highly recommend this place if your craving Japanesse food specially ramen try the chili one!
Amazing food and service, their pork katsu curry has me continuously returning. The service is also very good. Food comes out hot and delicious.
Decent Japanese food in town. We go here when we crave Japanese noodle. It used to have good food all around but the quality of sushi has gone down in the past few years..
First time i have been here, went with a couple of friends for lunch, its a nice small place, tastefully decorated , easy to move around in, I liked the colour scheme , we all ordered the Chili Goma Raman, and a Tuna Poke' to start, it was all excellent and I enjoyed it, it was just right, cooked perfect seasoned perfect, i certainly will be back.
Exceptional restaurant ran by dedicated people with a careful eye to detail. I've had the pleasure of eating at Shikiji about 40 times and I've never left disappointed. The chili goma ramen is my favourite item. Sushi is pretty good and my favourite comfort item is the Katsu curry don. I've tried most of the menu and a quite a few different specials/ features they have had The servers are always really nice and welcoming. They have good drinks and interesting features. What's not to like? I would choose to come here over almost any fine dining or high price restaurant in the city time and time again.
Very very sad that they changed the menu and took off the sashimi set. Now you have to order by individual pieces and is expensive. The rolls are good, we really enjoy the crispy tempura sashimi roll.
Enjoyable. We met our nephews for lunch here. Its a nice warm venue with quiet, pleasant service, perfect on a cool, drizzly day. Our group tried a couple of different ramen and a couple of different bentos. I chose the soy ramen with extra kimchi. Loved the broth, the pork toro and the kimchi. Yummy lunch. My companions were similarly pleased with their choices as well. The bentos are large and complete; the sushi fresh, the teriyaki delicious. Its a busy restaurant with many people coming for lunch on a Saturday. You should too. Thanks Shikiji!
Amazing ramen. The Chili Goma makes my mouth water just thinking about it. And the portions are big so you have enough to take home and enjoy later. My favorite ramen place in Calgary.
I have a special fondness for sushi and other Japanese cuisine, thanks to my years living in Vancouver during undergrad. My sushi cravings generally intensify as I spend more and more time away from the Coast and this weekend was no exception. After perusing Zomato I decided to check out Shikiji Japanese Noodles and Sushi restaurant.
Sushi was delicious. My entire family loved it.
The soups were amazing, I had a simple udon but my 4 family members each chose different flavours. We each loved them but felt dumb because we hadn't realized how wonderfully HUGE the bowls were... we had already ordered an insane amount of sushi and reconsidered it as soon as we saw the soups.
Overall, loved it. Staff are kind, moderately attentive. Noodles were great and although the sushi list is limited the rolls are absolutely delicious.
Shikiji is famous for its Chili Goma Ramen and this is usually the only thing I get when I visit and it's plenty of food. I like to add the pork toro, which is the fattier cut of the pork. The ramen is $15 and it is $4.50 to add the pork, so I believe it is a more expensive ramen compared to a place like Muku, however this sesame based broth is so rich and flavourful you really are getting your fill of food. The service here is amazing and they are such nice people. This place never disappoints and you leave feeling way too full.
I've been coming here since this place opened and have never been disappointed. The food, the service the ambiance are all exceptional. Reservations are recommended =)

I have been here many times, the Udon and quality of the sushi is one of the main reasons I keep coming back. I can eat their tempura shrimp as a meal onto itself...
Lets start out by by saying the sashimi here was probably some of the best I've ever had!!. The rolls however, were very so-so for the variety and price, not much flavor or quality. The waitress wasn't very polite and seemed to judge me and my boyfriend but did her job. We ordered the salmon and tuna sashimi and it was truly cut and selected with great skill. Will come again but probably won't get any rolls.
Fanciest ramen I've ever had... I'm used to eating instant noodles, but these instant noodles came with a quail egg!!! Talk about gourmet cheap eats!!!!
Takoyaki was very cheesy. Ramen was different.... Fancier than I'm used to. I prefer normal cheap ramen, but if I'm ever feeling like a date night, I'll def think of this place.
Some good things, some just okay about Shikiji. I went there for lunch today to try their miso ramen. The pork was tender and delicious and the portions are very generous for the price overall. Unfortunately, the noodles I had were a little bit too chewy for my taste and I was surprised that the ramen didn't come with a soft boiled egg like most other places do.
My mom had the bento which she thought was okay, but the rice wasn't to her taste (a bit on the dry side). Still, the value of the bento is great, because you get a lot of food.
We had the tuna and sashimi tataki which was excellent, however. The service was also impeccable. Would return, but probably not for ramen.
Delicious. Very nice. Tasty. Yum. What else can I say. I've been on a ramen kick the last few weeks and Shikiji is possibly the tops of what I've had. Make sure to get a reso thiugh as it fills up quick. Folks know it's good.
This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. I go there often and the service and food has been consistently good. They do get busy so if you are going with a group, it is a good idea to make a reservation or you may have to wait. The sushi is good but my personal favorite is the chili goma ramen. The portion is huge and it is delicious. I also would highly recommend their gyoza. The dipping sauce it comes with is great.
I love the cold soba here. I can say it is the best i have ever tried in town! The lunch special is pretty good too. But make sure you make a reservation for your lunch, or you need to expect 20-30 mins wait time.
Good Ramen, with plenty of potential to improve.
My wife has been a super fan of Ramen for years, thus when she said this place is about 75 percent as good as Sansotei Ramen in Toronto, I chose to trust her judgement. My personal favorite is the fatty BBQ pork. Their noodle is where a little improvement can really make a difference.
Went there for an early dinner so didn't need a reservation. Hostess and server were all courteous and friendly, service was quite prompt. Especially enjoyed their takoyaki appetizer (the octopus pieces were quite tender instead of gummy) which had hint of ginger in the batter to neutralise the potential fishy smell that could have come from the octopus. Vegetable gyoza didn't quite taste like our expectations, and relied too much on the natural flavour of vegetables in the dumpling to cut through the oil. It was perfectly cooked, but the vegetables were overwhelmed by the oil and soy sauce. Found the broth for both soy and miso ramen on the salty side, but their fatty bbq pork was well-seasoned and buttery.
Fantastic food. Sushi and sashimi is also fresh and delicious. Really friendly staff, and a great location. I'm also a big fan of Shikiji's Ramen bowls, and love their lunch bento box combos, good price for lots of food!
The place is small but cozy, they already have a lot of people at the opening time.
I had the shio ramen. Although knowing it is on the salty side, you need water to accompany this relatively delicious meal.
We were full and satisfied.
My favorite is the hot Shikiji udon/soba. I like the sansai vegetables, which aren't common here. The fried bean curd complements very well also. The price may seem a little higher, but you get some fried tempura as well - fills you up. The chili goma ramen is pretty good too. Unfortunately, the miso ramen is not good.
Amazing Shikiji udon. $17 is not cheap but it was so good I would probably eat it everyday. I love a basic bowl of Marukame udon but this fancy stuff was really good too. I consider this the best in Calgary.
I would have to say that this is my favorite Ramen place in the city. I like my soup broth spicy but I find chili goma is usually too thick for my liking so what I'll do here is order the miso broth and add kimchi to it. My husband loves their chili goma though. The only downside to the goma is that it comes with chopped up pork instead of the fatty pork slices, which I love.I'm not giving this place a 5 out of 5 because other than the ramen, nothing else on the menu stands out. Just another sushi restaurant otherwise.
Not being a native to Calgary I decided to just take the plunge and try this place out. I had the Shio Ramen and boy was it delicious. The best part of the Ramen were the pieces of fatty pork belly. The portion size is pretty big which I don't have a problem with. They even give you a small portion of toasted sesame seeds which you can grind down and add to your ramen. My girlfriend ordered a bento box and for $14 with all the food crammed in, it was amazing value. Overall very tasty food and I would return.
Whenever anyone asks me what's the best place for sushi in Calgary? It's Shikiji. Their food really shines as arguably the best here. No matter what you order from sushi, grill, to ramen, Shikiji does an exceptional job on all of it. Their staff are experienced and efficient, and the restaurant is a tad small but still lovely. This place has been my family's favourite for a couple years now.
FAVORITE SPOT!. I have been a regular customer for years now, they are one of my favorite overall restaurants in Calgary. Great spot for Japanese food, their menu offers a wide variety of dishes! They are best known for their ramen and for good reason!
The Chili Goma Ramen is fantastic! The presentation is beautiful and the soup is packed with so much flavour. I have tried many bowls of ramen...the only place that rivals this dish exists in Japan!
After only trying the Chili Goma, I decided to try other items on the menu and I have not been disappointed. The BBQ Pork Ramen is delicious! If you order this dish...you must order it with the fatty pork slices. Yes, not the healthiest choice, but it's the best! My only criticism would be that sometimes the soup can be a bit salty (just drink more Japanese beer!)
The Tako Yaki on the appetizer list is awesome! Make sure to that out, if you are comfortable trying octopus. The sushi list is great, there is a wide variety and the presentation is always done well.
Try the Autumn Roll, it's not on the menu and you will only see it once a year on the feature menu. But they are willing to make it if you order it. It combines sweet potato tempura, salmon, and avocado and it's a very delicious combo!
The portions are great, you will not leave the restaurant hungry. And the prices are reasonable.
The staff are amazing! Super nice and attentive, you are never left wondering where your server is. Also, the place gets busy, but you will not feel rushed to eat quickly. Unless there are reservations, in which they inform you before you sit down.
Highly recommend this restaurant to everyone!
Oct 2015:Dropped in tonight without a reservation and lucked out, they had a table for us. The Autumn Roll is SOOO good. Also ordered the Avacodo Tempura Roll, melt in your mouth good! As usual, service was top notch and the food outstanding. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Best sushi in Calgary.. I'm in a writing mood today so thought I'd catch up on reviews.
I actually eat at Shikiji quite regularly and the biggest plus about this restaurant is the consistency. The food is ALWAYS good and service the same. I've eaten at a lot of Japanese/sushi restaurants in Calgary and this place is my benchmark to measure others to. I've seen comments on here saying the sushi is low quality, definitely not what I've found. The rice is always perfect and the sushi fresh and tasty. We've also tasted a majority of other items off the menu and found them just as good. One exception I might say is the squid appetizer is sometimes overdone.
As for the service I always find it excellent. I can't say we've ever experienced sub par service here at all. Just make sure you make reservations.
Never been disappointed. Have been going here for years. I think it's one of the best sushi places in the city. The lunch menu is a bargain for what you get. The Raman soups are one of the best in the city and rivals some vancouver places I have tried.
The food is beautifully plated. The service has always been good.
Parking is on the side of building .
Love this place, never been disappointed.
Not good.
My ramen soup tasted like it was salt water.
No actually just salt with some water added.
The donburi was dry.
The takoyaki was good.
Low quality sushi. Uncomfortable seats.
Great ramen and quality sushi. Love the spicy goma ramen....the broth is very flavourful but I wished there was more meat included (like pork belly, perhaps!). Sushi is good quality..fish is fresh and rice doesn't fall apart after you take the first bite. My hubby likes the udon and soba noodles there too. We'be been here many times and will continue to do so. Service is good too and you need reservations for dinner especially Friday thru Sunday.
Chilli Goma Ramen. Wonderful - top ten all-time soup
My Top 3 ramen places in Calgary. I think this is #2, I still think Muku is #1 for cramped atmosphere which enhances the authenticity of a ramen place.
Shikiji is a good well-rounded place with sushi and ramen - but come here mainly for ramen :) It was a hidden gem a few years ago but now it is a well known fact that this place kicks ass. In fact, they opened Shiki Menya which I wrote in the other review as meh... just come to Shikiji and call it a day.
#1. Muku
#2. Shikiji
#3. Shiki Menya
Craving sushi? Go to Shikiji!. After trying several sushi restaurants in Calgary, Shikiji is now my go-to restaurant for fresh sushi at a reasonable price. Their takoyaki and chilli goma ramen are pretty good too.
Gone downhill but still good!. This is probably one of Caglarians' favorite Japanese restaurants in town. They have good ramen and katsu dishes. The sushi here though aren't really "sushi." The sushi dishes they serve is quite far from the proper Japanese sushi. They serve what we call "rolls." Nothing against it and their selection is pretty tasty. But if you're looking for some quality fish and proper handling of them, I don't recommend it. Their lunch bento box is also great. It comes in a very handy box, and they're quite delicious, but perhaps a little overpriced. I've heard that Shikiji's had some replacements of their kitchen staffs and, honestly, the food has gone a little downhill. However, it is still a good location.
Best ramen in the city!. I go here frequently for lunch, I've never been disappointed with the service or the food. The ramen is the best I have ever had in the city, my favourite is the Chilli Goma! The sushi they have is also excellent, seems to be high quality and well made food. Recommend to everyone!
Best Sushi in Town!. Great service! Food is always so fresh and delicious.
The best quality sushi in Calgary. Hands down. However, the place is not so good, it is small, noisy with not so comfortable tables and chairs.
Go for the Chili Goma Ramen. What was once a special item that was only supposed to be temporary has become a staple and a major reason I introduce people to Shikiji. The Chili Goma Ramen is great, you can get it spicy or medium, either way it will likely have your nose sniffeling a bit. I have yet to introduce this to someone who didn't enjoy it and that's over a dozen people.
They have good Sushi and Sashimi, with occasional special like Wild BlueFin Tuna and other seasonal and limited items. Sometimes they offer an experimental taster dish as a pre-appy. Even though I can be somewhat picky with briney , pickled or vinegary items, I never pass up the chance to try some new creation offered.
I don't eat rolls so cannot offer opinion, but my friends say they are also good.
Traditional feel to the decor and preparation. The staff is attentive and pleasant.
Be sure to make a reservation if going at noon on a weekday, and yoi may need to park one block over if it's busy.
Great sushi. Been here a few times and never had a bad experience with the food or customer service. I've ordered many different sushi rolls and sashimi and loved them all. I will definitely go back.
Best Ramen Ever!. I've always went to Shikiji for the sushi for many many years. Great service, great atmosphere! It wasn't until November of 2013 did I discover their delicious ramen- the Chili Goma Ramen. All I can say is that I've gone back 6 times for the Chili Goma Ramen 6 times since January- 4 times with my coworker (My coworker loves spicy food and I got her completely hooked on this! She's been asking me to go every time. Not going to lie, it was an evil plan from the start because we work in DT and she drives to work!! To defend myself, I did warn her about how delicious it was!), once with a couple of friends, and another time with my bf.
I would definitely recommend making reservations as the place is really tiny. They have incredible and consistent service.
I can't wait until Shiki Menya to open up in Bridgeland (same owner), supposed to be sometime this month! I bet there will be pretty tasty ramen there too!! Looking forward to it!
Good ramen. The chili goma ramen is the lunch you need to recover from a late night. Wonderful!

Very good. I've been here a handful of times and have never had a bad experience. The ramen is top-notch and very plentiful, both in quantity and in flavour. It reminds me of the hole-in-the-wall ramen shops back in Tokyo! My favourite menu item, though, is the katsu curry don!! (katsu is deep-fried pork cutlet) For those who have not tried Japanese-style curry, it's much different than Thai or Indian. I, personally, can't get enough of Japanese curry and to find it here (GOOD, at that), is nearly impossible. But Shikiji's is excellent. If you've never tried it, you should! I'll be back for sure to get my katsu curry fill!
The miso ramen and the tofu appy, both so good!! Best ramen in calgary
I wrote the below review just over 2 years ago and I still think this is one of the best original Japanese restaurants in Calgary. They maintain their consistency in quality and service. I still love their fatty pork in their ramens and the creamy scallop is especially my fave because they pack that with masago rather than just a garnish. The sushi always tastes fresh. Make sure you call in advance during peak hours for a reso or if they're closing early.

One of the best original Japanese restaurants in Calgary. Serving tasty ramen and fresh sushi! The restaurant is small but service is always fast.
Best Japanese food in calgary n most authentic, being to Japan n staying there helps n this is the only place where I can get certain dishes that taste just like they do in Japan ex: takoyaki and ramen
So tasty!. Have been here numerous times and each time the quality is high. Have had the ramen, soba, yakitora, and sushi. All are phenomenal. Even got takeout once and you can certainly tell they have a lot of pride in what they do. The takeout was put together with so much care and effort. SO DELICIOUS! Everything. This place is a favourite.
I've been back to Shikiji, since my wife is such a fan.
We now specifically ask for the soft noodle.
No more al dente and soup base taste better than a year ago.
I will come back.
Hands down best ramen in town!. LOVE the chili-goma ramen...prepare to be STUFFED. Have tried quite a few other places, none measured up, if you're looking for a super flavorful, full bodied broth - this is where you'll find it!
Best ramen in town. We have been coming here for 8 yrs and despite all the new ramen shops that have opened around town, this remains the most consistent and best bowl in town: broth is delicious, fatty pork melts in your mouth, cabbage has the perfect consistency
Wonderful atmosphere with friendly staff. A good amount of food variety (even for those who don't eat raw fish). The food portions are large for rolls and if they are not, they are surely unique in flavour/taste. The rice and noodle dishes are large portioned and delicious. Highly recommend this place for everything.
It seems like a typical izakaya, but the menu is more diverse than you'd typically find. They serve ramen to sushi and lots of things in between, and they do it all very well. The sushi is fresh and the service was great. The ramen broth was excellent, though the noodles were not the classic style I was expecting from an authentic restaurant like this (ramen noodles really have to be made fresh in-house to be right, and these don't seem to be). The portion size was a happy medium, so don't be afraid to order a selection of things! If you want just one thing (ramen, etc.) in my opinion it's better to go to a specialty restaurant, but if you want a good selection of Japanese dishes this is a great choice that won't disappoint no matter what you order.
Best Chili Goma Ramen I've had in Calgary, but not the best Ramen. Noodles were good but a bit soft, and there were too many chives for my liking (I was picking them out of my spoon near the end of the bowl). Service was great, prices seem fair for great quality ingredients, and the pork was amazing!
Update 2018: visited a few times and I'm still a fan of their ramen. Tried their Miso ramen for the first time today and it was excellent, noodles we're perfect. Still a few too many veggies for my liking so might ask for fewer chives/scallions next time. Also tried some sushi (hamachi, blue fin, toro) and they were all great but I felt the hamachi and toro were very very small. Service was ok but they were pretty busy.
This place is for the great ramen. Soy ramen is really good and I personally love the Chili Goma ramen. It's a small, busy, noisy and not so fancy place. But they provide good and quick services. One of best ramen place in this city.
They have some real tasty ramen here! I went with their basic soy ramen with fatty bbq pork. The broth is rich and coats the firm noodles perfectly. It doesn't overpower with the salt so it highlights the pork and bok choy. All the toppings are simply there for texture (seaweed, scallions). Lastly, the pork melts in your mouth. It's soft, fatty, and flavourful. It actually isn't heavy to eat so you don't feel weighed down afterwards. Their takoyaki is also very good (tangy, sweet but still savoury).
Service is average but it's not the reason you go here. Besides, maybe it's better they don't bother you. That way, you can focus on chowing down.
Tried this place out the other day. The menus is sushi, ramen, udon, and a few other Japanese dishes. Tried the BBQ ramen and the seafood ramen, both are excellent. The restaurant has a collection chilled out vide going due to the music. There is parking on the south side of the building in the parking lot next to the Madison apartment. Akashi beer is 6 dollars for a small, and 11 for a large. I thought this to be reasonable priced. Green tea is 1.50 a person. They make awesome takoyaki!
