Not a typical Chinese restaurant, it's actually Macau food which was a Portuguese colony -- though they've changed the name to add 'Peking' which is mainland -- again slightly different. Most people won't notice too much of a difference unless you're used to Cantonese which is about 99% of whAt passes for Chinese food in this town.
Right around the corner from us and it's our go to Chinese restaurant. The inside is a bit warn, but the staff is always quite friendly. The unexpected thing about this restaurant is that they also have a Portuguese menu. We always order the Piri Piri half chicken with their homemade chilli oil. We mix this into the Piri Piri sauce that comes with the chicken. It is boneless and delicious. We usually order that with a Chinese beef and broccoli in garlic sauce with Singapore rice or thin Singapore noodles. The egg rolls are good. With the plum sauce, it's like having dessert so we only order it as a treat once in a while. The only disappointing thing with Emerald G is that they do not have good tea. They place a tea bag in one medium size pot. We only ordered it once and we will not order it again.

The inlaws were in town, and wanted some Chinese food. Emerald Garden was exactly what they were looking for. The service was good, the food arrived promptly, and all the dishes were excellent. We ordered the dinner for six, and we still had enough left over to feed for of us another meal.
Great restaurant. We had the Peking Duck, veggies, rice, and the sweet and sour pork. Great service, great price. The whole family enjoyed it. The duck was superb.
Best dumplings ever!!! They are a homemade recipe and they are so delicious! I have been coming to this restaurant since I was a child and I have never been disappointed. If you want fresh, delicious and flavourful Chinese Food, get it from here! It's best eaten at the restaurant but takeout is super yummy too. Not only that, the staff are incredibly friendly and accommodating too.
I've been living here 28 years and I haven't found a better Chinese restaurant in the city! All of their food arrives fresh and hot. The vegetables are crisp and the food is never overlooked. ( A common problem with ginger beef and sweet and sour pork. ) Service is always quick and courteous . The last time I went I felt bad as we arrived near closing but the server told us to take our time and not to worry about it.
This place has by far the BEST Chinese food in the city. The food comes out sizzling and tastes amazing. You cannot beat their quality! Honestly this is a hidden gem and I love it. Try the ginger beef!!
Pretty great Chinese food!. I have been consistently disappointed with the Chinese food I've order in Calgary since I moved here 9 years ago. Until the other night, I had yet to find a place that I really enjoyed. There would always be a good dish and a couple poor ones. Emerald Garden changed that, this place is great!
I ordered the dinner for six and all dishes were great. The salt and pepper squid was cooked perfectly, not rubbery. Ginger beef was delicious. Also super good were the dumplings. So tasty with the vinegar and chilli oil!
All in all, great "North American" style Chinese. Will be ordering again!
Very Tasty!. We ordered dinner and after being informed that delivery would be about 90 minutes as it was a busy Saturday night we were given the option to pickup our order in 35 minutes. After arriving to pick up the order the restaurant was indeed very busy but I was greeted immediately and the order was ready to go. We had the salt and pepper seafood, salt and pepper ribs and Yang Chow fried rice. All were excellent quality with the ribs being a standout. Will definitely be back.
Authentic? Probably not. Good? Yes.. I live in Sunnyside. I was looking for a Chinese food place after the one in Kensington shut down. This did the trick. Delicious North American style Chinese food delivered to my place 14bminutes!! after I hung up the phone.
Best Chinese Food .... Ever!. From a decent selection on their menu to the service... they strive to please. My wife and I have been going there for years now and the quality of food has consistently been fantastic. When we order we always make changes to how we like the dish prepared, like extra green onions on the Almond Chicken, and no green peppers in the Salt and Pepper Veggies, and they always accommodate us. I don't think they want everyone to make changes to their dishes but the staff is very friendly. My wife even suggested they used Granny Smith apples when they do up their candied fruit for more flavour and they listened and now use the tart green apples and I must say the candied apple tastes fabulous. Be sure to ask for the Chili Oil when ordering your dish, a little goes a long way and you can tell if it is fresh or a week or 2 old as it gets considerably stronger the longer it sits. Add just a couple of drops in the Won Ton Soup and enjoy! I use it on the Salt and Pepper Veggies and can't seem to get enough of it, so their staff always brings me a second Chili Oil dish. If you like currie like my wife and I do, then order the Mongolian Beef and savour the flavour! You simply can't go wrong.
Wow! Most delicious food! We were able to get egg rolls, which are somewhat rare in comparison to spring rolls. We asked for honey sesame chicken, which wasn't on the menu and were graciously told that the dish can be easily made for us. The chicken came with pineapple chunks which made it even more scrumptious! Our ginger beef was spicy and tender, while the coconut rice melted in our mouths! Yum! We ordered our food to our hotel room and it was still hot on arrival. Didn't even had to ask for plates as that was delivered as well. Great and thoughtful service. Thank you!
Margaret our server was an absolute Jem! She made our dining experience most enjoyable. Our meal was delicious, fresh and arrived hot and in large portions. Wish there was an Emerald Garden in the South!
Decent food at a fair price!. I am new to the area and wanted to try a decent Chinese food restaurant. I looked at many reviews for restaurants in the area and Emerald Garden seemed to have the best ones out of them all.
First impressions: the man on the phone was very polite to me and understood that I was looking at an old menu (the one found on here). He was accommodating and called me back to ensure my order was correct, as he thought he misheard one of my items.
Delivery was alright. I was quoted about 45-55 minutes and the food arrived shortly after the 1 hour mark. The driver was expecting me to pay with card but I had told the man on the phone cash. My order was about $48 and I gave him $60. The driver almost took all of it, so I had to stop him and ask him for my change.
The portion sizes are incredible. I ordered a large hot and sour soup and expected 1 big container of it (which is typical), and instead I got 2 of the large containers full! I also ordered ginger beef, beef and broccoli, sweet and sour pork, and got an order of Shanghai noodles for free for ordering $45 of food before taxes. I also got a handful of fortune cookies. The items were packaged with care to ensure nothing was spilled.
The quality of the food was very good. I -love- hot and sour soup and I was very happy with the taste. It was a bit too peppery, but every restaurant has their own flare to dishes. The beef and broccoli was also very well done, but a touch too salty. The ginger beef and sweet and sour pork was alright... nothing to rave about. A little on the soggy side, to be honest. And the Shanghai noodles were also very good! I was happy to see green veggies mixed in.
Overall, I would recommend this restaurant to others and I will order from here again. If I am ordering for delivery, I may shy away from ordering their deep fried dishes, as they got a bit soggy due to the delivery/wait time.
The service here was fantastic and so was the food. We were pleasantly surprised!

My family has been going to Emerald Garden for 15 years since I was 2 yeard old. It's absolutely amazing how consistent the restaurant is. For 15 years they have had the same staff Annd same chef and everytime we go there are greeted happily and sincerely by the friendly waitresses who make an effort to connect with every customer on a deeper level than just "server to diner". The food is AMAZING. We compare every other won-ton soup and salt&pepper seafood (classic chinese foods done perfectly and simply here) with the ones at emerald garden as the 10 on a scale of 1 to 10. Every single time, we get about the same items, and every single time they taste the same and wonderful. Try the salt&pepper seafood, eggplant hotpot, and piri piri chicken. There's no other place that makes these foods nearly as well, and many restaurants don't even have them.
If you are debating whether or not to go here for the first time and finding it a hard decision, take this review as your turning point. This place is missing from your life. Go now!
Emerald Garden Peking & Seafood. I have had many visits to this wonderful restaurant both for the lunch menu's and evening meals.
I have to say that l have always had well presented, clean looking food and the with the best taste in town..
I will continue to recommend this restaurant and its delightful, friendly staff...
I live far south and always drive here as l know l always get exceptional food and service.
Pretty darn good. Our go to chinese place - they serve large groups well.
id stick with the menu items, they seem to be better and more varietied than the lunch specials.
Take out delivery Emerald Garden Christmas Eve. It is very cold this evening so I ordered a delivery from Emerald Garden early. It arrived in about an hour as it was very busy. The person answering the phone understood my large order very easily. The food was absolutely delicious! Each dish was colorful and glistening with freshness. It arrived piping hot. The vegetables were crunchy fresh. The spicy dishes were delicately flavored entwined with different types of piquant spice and not too hot. My favorites are lemon prawns which are very lightly battered in a mild lemon sauce, pineapple prawns, consisting of bright orange red sauced circular morsels that are large, plump and juicy with a tangy crunch, mixed with fresh cubes of juicy, crunchy pineapple. The pan fried dumplings are cooked to tender perfection with zesty red-wine vinegar and spicy chili sauces. The salt & pepper seafood are delicately prepared with a light delicious batter coating with colors of onions with green & red peppers added. I also recommend the braised four jewels with crunchy brightly colored green broccoli, two kinds of flavourful mushrooms, and crunchy yellow baby corn. The Ginger beef is cooked to perfection, not too dry, with a hint of fresh ginger. The szechuan fried rice is wonderfully colored a bright reddish - orange and just the right amount of slightly heating spice blended with bright green peas, an appetizing Christmas dish. I highly recommend The Emerald Garden to be the ultimate Chinese cuisine fine dining and delivery experience in Calgary.
Downtown variety with suburban quality. Very prompt service, large variety of pekin (duck), seafood, Portuguese, and others non standard suburb dishes plus it's always good. So let loose and order something new... We have never been disappointed. PS there are two large christmas parties here and we got our dishes in under 15 min form entering.
Amazing food and superior hospitality!!!. We discovered this place 2 years ago and have been dining in or taking out a minimum of twice per month since then. It is a far distance away from us but well worth the drive. I am completely shocked to see less than favourable reviews but I am convinced these are from the restaurant's competition... its sad, really. The food is fresh, tasty, high-quality food EVERY single time. The service is so wonderful that every few visits, we take little gifts for our servers and they bring little gifts for us... that's how sweet these people are. Once, I ordered something new and ended up not liking it (it was a tofu dish and I had never had tofu before and I'm not fond of the texture) - and they removed it from my bill even though they were not at fault and I didn't even ask them to. We are proud to take friends, family and business partners here. It is always busy and filled with large groups celebrating birthdays, anniversarys, etc. It is our favourite place to go in Calgary.
Yummy. I have been ordering food for years from Emerald Garden. The staff are wonderful. The food is consistently good. The Salt&Pepper Squid is the best I've ever had. The dishes use quality cuts. The Mango Chicken is another of those yummy dishes you just crave.
Top Notch. I've only ever ordered take out/delivery but I've done it dozens of times from these peeps. It's t-notch food
One of the best Chinese food places in Calgary without a doubt. I never order from anywhere else. Service is excellent, prices are comparable and delivery is easy. A favorite!
Excellent. For more than 12 years we dine at EMERALD GARDEN, on 16 Ave. N at 9 Street (across SAIT). Is a Macanese restaurant where you can order blind form both Macanese (afro-Portuguese) and Chinese menus. We are not Chinese fans but salt-n-pepper mixed seafood and salt-n-pepper vegetables are exquisite, and then piri-piri, hotpot, whatever... Under priced for the quality and service but still reasonable.
Yum Yumma Yum Yum!!!!. BEST IN THE CITY!!! HANDS DOWN!
There is not a bad thing I can say about this place. I have been coming here for 13 years and it is by far the best!
