Lina's has always been a pretty special place. For groceries, breakfast, lunch, coffee or a snack, it is the closest thing we have to a European, neighborhood, casual dining experience. The food is made from scratch, made with love and is affordable. We didn't think it could get better but the recent changes have indeed, made Lina's even better. The menu is not too different but the twists are amazing, the grocery selection more vast yet the neighborhood feel of the "old" Lina's remains intact and a special place may be even more special now!
I have driven past Lena’s for years but have never gone in. Tonight my son and I decided to pop in for dessert and coffee. It was more than worth the wait! The desserts were absolutely delicious as was the coffee and everything was so reasonably priced ! I can’t wait to bring my husband here!
Great staff and tasty food! The cafe in the store has better food that most of those fancy places downtown. Don't miss out and come and visit!
Absolutely loved this place, my Daughter also loved and my husband. Our first time coming to this Market keep up the great work
Lina's is not only a great community grocery store with the best cheese counter, they care about their clients and the community they live in. I am a client for life.
Was here last week shopping for the Football Supper....Awesome...great Christmas packages...I would love them all!!! Lovely visit with a "new" friend... and the Almond Croissant and Large Cap was out of this world. The best part is greeting the staff who have been sooo good to me. Many of us share a similar "health" journey! Great place!!!Love it!!! This is 5 star all the way!!!
Today was my first visit to Lina's and it was amazing! Friendly staff, quick service and delicious food! We will definitely be coming back!
Awesome food and great staff. The family goes there often. And they supply everything we need for pizza night.
Literally the greatest cannoli I have ever had. Pastry was perfection, so delicate and flaky. And the dilling was rich and slightly tart with a subtle hint of orange. Incredible job. It's been hoyra since I had it and haven't shut up about it since!
One of my favourite spots for cappuccino and Italian pastries in YYC
Stopped in for a bowl of chicken tortellini soup - most delish bowl of soup I've had in years! What is in it??
Bloody great food, the lasagna and lentil soup is top notch
What a hidden gem!! It was Sunday after lunch and the place was still packed!!! The panini was so good. It was the in store fresh bread that made the sandwich. The meatballs and gravy were so old school. Love the raisins in the meatballs. Such a lost taste. The boccocini and tomato salad was so fresh. Now to go shopping!!!
Good food. Not expensive. Good atmosphere. Have a coffee. Then do some shopping. Buy a few items for home. This place has been a Calgary staple for many years and will continue for many more.
The sandwiches here are tasty and well priced, and they have a delicious bakery section with lots of sweet options. Recently tried the hot food line: the pasta was mediocre and expensive, although the arancini was delicious. Service can be very friendly or very abrasive depending on who is serving you.
Continuing my tour of Italian grocery--Lina is good but not fantastic. Still a good size but slightly more spartan than others in the city. The prices are on the high side. We tried to make a deal on some prosciutto ends and they wouldn't go for it. My GF is Italian and was a bit disappointed. Selection is good but not outstanding--still more of a specialty store than a true market. You're still going to have to hit Coop.
Love Lina's.
Stick to the stuff behind the glass. I love the hot food section, the desserts are mouth watering and the cheese, all the amazing fresh bread and olive section are what keeps me coming back. (The stuffed peppers are a must!)
I also buy their pizza dough and toppings for about 15$ much cheaper than people pay for the bad pizza that exists in this city. Also a little bit of fun. I will always visit this place but only once every 1-2 months. It is pricy if you shop for normal groceries but who goes here for normal groceries?
Pistachio cannoli, frozen ricotta gnocchi, very good tiramisu, affordable fresh pasta, fresh in store prepared sauces, organic vegetables, nice mushrooms, porchetta. Espresso bar with all sorts of Italian sodas and good selection of Italian staples. What's not to like? Definitely one of the better Italian markets in the city.
I knew Lina and have been going for years. Now Lina is gone and I'll provide an overview of what's good, what's not and also what's changed.
Generally Lina's Italian Market is a bit overpriced but conveniently located. They have fairly good selection of groceries and a larger selection of deli meats, cheeses, salad and antipasto with a small produce section. Their gift wares and kitchenwares have been scaled back dramatically ... not much left. The cafeteria style restaurant offers pizza, hot lunch, sandwiches and desserts. Best bet are the sandwiches followed by the hot lunches then pizza. As for desserts they are relatively good but becoming more common and less traditionally Italian. Coffee/espresso is pretty consistently good. My 3.5 review is down from a 4.0 a year or two ago.
I love Lina's!! The olives, cheese, meat! I have yet to try their sandwiches, pizzas, and bread because every time I go there they're always sold out but they must be deliciousness
First time having a cannoli and I decided to buy two big ones and a tiramisu. The tiramisu was the best dessert I have eaten in a very long time. Very light and smooth served in a delicous chocolate cup. I would go back for 4 more. Yummy.
Wasnt a fan of the cannoli filling. I guess I didn't really know what to expect being the first time I've had one. I did love the crunchy exterior I just didn't like the creamy filling. Everyone has their opinions of the cannoli but this is my first time trying it so I think I'll try another one somewhere else and see if they compare.
Really friendly service from the handsome young fella at the check out. Lots of amazing ingredients in the store, some not so cheap. 2 Cannoli and a Tiramasu cost me $10 and change. I'll be back!! :)
Favourite place in Calgary, not only do I love shopping and buying my food here but the restaurant portion is amazing. The best pizza I have ever had, tastes different from any Italian pizza I've ever tasted. I find that no matter what restaurant I go to the pizza is always the same, first place I've gone where I was totally impressed. Their desserts are to DIE for! Only downside is that there are so many selections for dessert that I can never choose! Tiramisu and chocolate hazelnut cream filled rings are my favourite!
Nestled in an Italian market it's no wonder that the food served at Lina's is quite fresh. There's a variety of food items available from sandwiches, pizzas, soups and pastries made in-house with ingredients from the market.
For me, the sandwiches are the prime item. They're pre-made with the Italian meats, cheeses and veggies, but to warm them up under the panini press just takes a few minutes. Nicely layered equally with meats and cheeses on a crisp bun, it's a great affordable meal in the suburbs of Centre Street. Of all the shops located on this street, it's a great option to consider when you're hungry.
Best cappuccino in town. Don't have to go to Rome anymore you try an amazing cappuccino. Their treats are truly worth it too. Not to mention they have groceries as wel.
Pretty overpriced but food and cappuccinos are really good although sometimes they put too much cream in the tiramisu but it's still really good. The rice croquets are to die for !
Go early!. I love this place. Many, if not most, of the staff there are Italian (very friendly people).
If you want the good stuff from the lunch and cappuccino bar, go early (i.e., 11:00 am) and beat the rush.
I had a wonderful eggplant pizza. Very delicious - on par with the ones I had in Italy. The price is very reasonable when compared to the ones that I had in Europe. Of course, I can't leave Lina's without a nice cup of cappuccino for the morning. Total was less than $10.
Lastly, fresh bread and groceries are also available! Plenty of parking!
Well done!
It was fabulous. The food was delicious and filling, sandwiches were great. Low on soup and salad, but pre-made sandwiches are good. It is a cafeteria style lunch bar, but totally worth it if you don't mind that! The desserts were a little on the dry side though custard filling was nice. I would definitely eat here again. The grocery side and kitchenette side of the building was wonderful, you can find almost anything you'll need and some things you never thought of! Will definitely return again.
Lina's is great ! Amazing deli selection of meats and cheeses. Delicious fresh made salads (boccacini, Greek salad etc) good bread. Love it all
Best Italian Sausage in Town. This is THE ONLY spot in town to buy truly authentic Italian sausage, Hot or Mild, they blow Spolumbo's out of the water....
Service is excellent, just get in line, assert yourself and your needs. It's a busy place and they have young talent behind the counters so sometimes they all don't know the ins and outs, but they do try to help & serve the best they can.
Have patience when shopping at Lina's it should be more of an adventure rather than a dash in & out
Great food, hostile service often times though.
Good food but....... But service can be very indifferent & rude, during busy lunch hours is not the time to visit with friends & family!
Customers should always come 1st...
I enjoy the selection of products they carry. The deli counter is awesome, and so are their buns. It is also a great place for soup and sandwich. Oh and try the rice balls. Only problem is the parking- lot is always full.
Love it. Great lunch food! We shop their all time for specialty items and for deli meats!
Great Italian. Lina's is a terrific place to come and get your fill of Italy!! They are extremely polite and the place has everything you could possibly want and some things you didn't know you needed. Lunch is always decent and the price is fair. Go to Lina's and enjoy!!
Authentic Italian. This is your authentic Italian supermarket / deli. Comes with a great salad bar, cheeses, European imports, hot meals and a typical Italian grandma ignoring you at the till.
Good homemade split pea soup, awesome selection of salads, pasta, pizza and panini. I'll be back again.
Great food!. I had their Italian style panini and split pea soup. The Panini was really tasty and was freshly made. The Split pea soup was also really good, a tad bit on the salty side, but still really good. All their food looked amazingly appetizing. They had a variety of foods like Paninis, Soups and Salads, Pizza and tons more. The Price wasn't bad as well.
I didn't receive any bad service, but my friend encountered the grouchy lady who was helping him. Thankfully I didn't get her, everyone else was super nice.
Will definitely go back again.
Wow!. The young guy at the deli is amazing!
he knows his meats and cheeses very well, is always ready with a new recommendation, and it always helps that he is tall, dark and oh so handsome.
I love going here to get my meats and cheeses on the weekends just to have him serve me!
Went to this establishment for lunch today and was very pleased with the quality. The menu was a bit difficult to decypher properly because the food was unlabelled but the attendant helped me pick out my meal. I had a breaded chicken pallard with long green beans and tomato sauce. Simple yet trully Italian. The flavours were large and the meal was wholesome. I will be eating there again I'm sure.
Their seafood salad in the deli is pricey but worth every cent!!!!!! DELISH!!!
Fantastic. I have been going to Lina's for a number of years now. I love going there for lunch. They make the best pizza and desserts. They also offer a wide selection of coldcuts and cheeses. Lina's is clean and has extremely friendly workers. It is a must.
Hidden gem.. The restaurant/cafe was delicious and authentic... right down to the ladies yelling at me from behind the counter. The deli has a HUGE selection of assorted meats and cheeses. I bought prosciutto on sale and it lasted me a few days (which is saying something). Fresh bread and lots of variety in the grocery store.
Next time, I'm gonna plow through the deli, buy a giant focaccia (which they sell) and make a shockingly large sandwich. Mmm...
Better Bruschetta. This supermarket and cafe is a gem tucked away on Centre Street. Fantastic choice of gourmet Italian Foods and beyond a doubt fantastic breads and bruschetta.
Friday Afternoon Lunches - Lina's. Come on foodies, 'fess up: there is always that one place you've heard nothing but good things about, and you always seem to zip right by and never get to go in until that one time...and you know what they all meant. For me, Lina's is one of those places (yes, I have more than one.)
Highly recommended as a Italian market in town with a wonderful cafe to boot filled with lots of Italian goodies -- and the recommendations were not wrong. The service is cafeteria style, but the food looked wonderful. The focaccia pizzas were soft and loaded with toppings, perfectly warmed in the ovens. And the selection of Italian sodas and beverages were amazing...some items I've never seen, even while I was in Italy (over ten years ago, mind you...)
I didn't have much time to browse (or have time for a more extensive experience of the menu) this time, but I feel that sometime soon, one of my bus trips down Centre Street towards downtown may have a detour along the way...
Nice market. My husband and I picked up some potato gnocchi, spicy garlic sauce, some type of nice little italian cookie (they have many to choose from) and some osso bucco. Apparently they get their osso bucco from Montréal, so it arrives frozen, but I was able to get some from their display case (thawed). I decided I don't like potato gnocchi (probably not their fault... I'd been mislead by less-than-authentic Italian restaurants feeding me what they called gnocchi). The spicy garlic sauce (jar) was good though, and the cookies were delish (especially dipped in the latté I'd ordered at their cappuccino bar). The osso bucco was good overall - though that was my first time buying & preparing some - just the odd piece seemed a bit sub-par (perhaps a bit much fat on some, and I'm not a fat-phobic).
They seem to have a great selection of deli & cheeses, as well as many packaged items (canned stuff, pasta, sauces, sweets, etc). I think they maybe do gelato - I'll have to come back in the summer.
Lina's is a Gem!!!. Lina's is a one of a kind place in Calgary.
The market side of things has all of the best Italian food imported from around the world. They carry the freshest herbs in the city, amazing cheeses (try the sicilian pecorino) and aisle after aisle of canned and jarred goodness (try the canned octopus in marinade).
The cafe side serves authentic pizzas, sandwiches and espresso...delicious.
All I can say is thank god we have a place like Lina's in this city!
Mama Mia!. Lina offers hearty, home cooked type meal that are both rich in flavour and heavy to digest. There isn't a great variety of items to choose from, but the pastas, foccacias and soups are excellent, I specially like the croquette smothered in tomato sause. Get there early or the food will be gone by 12:30, parking can also be a problem. Totally recommended!
Love the market, food is okay. After much observation and trial and error I now understand the ordering method in the cafe at Lina's. Basically you have four areas to order food - pizza, sandwiches, salads/pastries, and hot dishes. If ordering a pizza or sandwich to stay, make sure you request it be heated as you may receive it cold (unless you like it that way). Once you have ordered, take your plate with you and proceed to the till. If ordering a hot beverage just pay for your meal and drink, find a seat and then watch for them to make your drink and retrieve it when ready. If i order a sandwich and hot drink I just pay for both and then my hubbie grabs us a seat and i wait around to the counter area to retrieve the items. I stick with the Italian sandwich that includes mortadella meat, roasted red peppers, and provolone cheese on a fantastic crusty roll. It sounds boring, but its very good. Lina's makes the most fantastic white buns/rolls and you can buy them in bulk from their bins for a really cheap price. The buns are crusty, light and flaky without the toughness and crunch that hurts your mouth when you bite down. I also love their cappuccino and my husband is a fan of their mocha. Regarding dessert, their biscotti is amazing and so is the sticky cinnamon bun. I have tried many of their other traditional desserts and hot foods and I didn't really enjoy any of them. I have not tried their minestrone soup, but I hear from others it is good. Just take a breath, don't get frustrated and you will get the hang of ordering. Be patient, as the staff is not very friendly or helpful.
Nice sandwich. I shop at Lina's occassionally and usually grab a quick lunch. Not fancy and service can be brusque. However the sandwiches are tasty and the cappuccino is among Calgary's best.
The great thing about this little market is that in addition to the huge selection of cured meats, fine cheeses, and Italian specialties, there happens to a pretty solid little cafeteria section that offers everything from hot Italian entrees, made to order sandwiches and a nice selection of deserts. Whenever we go to Lina's for a spot of shopping and lunch we invariably end up settling on their selection of Italian sandwiches. Aside from the delicious fillings, credit must also be given to the bread which all is served o
