Review The Ship And Anchor - Calgary

Hesam Rezaei
It's a gem on 17th avenue, a classic place for all ages. You may find some places good for teenagers some for grown people, I want to say this place is enjoyable for everyone. Pretty clean and good service. Servers are polite and nice. Food quality is good, variety of drinks and cocktails. They have a good collection of Calgary draught beers.

We had a great time here today. We decided it was so nice we would enjoy the patio. It was beautiful when we first got there, then of course, it’s Calgary so we got a little snow. The service was great and the nachos were fantastic!
Boss Sales
Food and service was amazing! Had lunch on their patio after running errands in dt. Our server was Sam and she was fantastic. Drinks were prompt and food was extremely fresh with lots of flavor.

PLEASE READ THIS Honestly where do I begin? Our server was Evan, really nice person and amazin host! Did everything perfectly! Me and my girlfriend were visiting from Toronto and as you'd imagine, we've been to a few restaurants in our time( we both worked in the restaurant industry) Nothing compares to what we've experienced here. One of the low reviews suggests this place is pretentious, that couldn't be a bigger lie, really wish I could argue all of the low reviews and make it perfect. This place is straight forward and exactly what you want from a pub! We got a lot of recommendations for this place and honestly the hype was worth it. The food we had was delicious, I don't understand people complaining, if you want super fine dining with dainty servings go somewhere else and judge that, we got the fried pickles as a snack and those were really yummy, then we got the deluxe pizza and the bangers and mash, which was absolutely amazing. I'm a pretty big guy(6'5) and the bangers n mash filled me up! And it was delicious. Evan was also very knowledgeable about the menu and was able to recommend some good beers to me! Awesome guy! Their prices also are something that should bring you in to this place as you are able to have a really good time and eat well and not have absoulte regrets the next night about how much you spent! I don't think I've ever written a review as long as this one for a place, and there's so much more I could write about but honestly all I have to say is go and try this place! They have something for everyone! (Wish we took better pics) We are 100% returning to this place and cannot wait!

I went to watch a soccer game on a Sunday morning and it was great! Nice atmosphere, the staff were friendly and the food was great. Ordered an eggs benedict and it was great! Definitely recommend this place

It’s a cool place but the service wasn’t good. Seemed like they were under staff for a busy day like Saturday. It took too long for the server to get our order cause she had to take care of too many tables. My drink wasn’t good either.
Phaedra Cadsky
Patio is nice and sunny, great crowd, and very inclusive! I have a gluten allergy and it's hard to eat out, but our waitress Sam went out of her way to tell me about the options on the menu that were available to me before. It was the first time I ate tempura in 6 years and it was delicious. 10/10 love this place and thank you Sam, you are awesome! I will definitely eat here again.
Brittany Wagman
FEELS LIKE MY SECOND HOME! Brent is the best bartender ever and the main reason why we keep coming back. To be greeted by first name and to be given top shelf service, he deserves a raise. Amazing atmosphere, friendly staff, and an all around great time. We tried the nachos for the first time last night and they were absolutely delicious. Finally!!! A place that actually layers their nachos instead of putting all of the toppings on the top! We added spicy beef and it was so good that we ordered it again tonight. The salsa, sour cream, and guacamole come in decent sizes too! A gem of a place on 17th!!!
Joy Deines
Best pub in Calgary!! Best food, best staff, most/best beers on tap, best patio, best bands = one rad stop.
Denise Marie McCann
I love the Ship and it's the best patio on 17th Ave by far. Down to earth patrons and staff without the 17th Ave Barbie and Ken doll attitude you tend to find at the other bars along that strip. Great food and the locally brewed beer was a plus. The one and only thing that could possibly use improvement is the gravy. Was a bit on the soupy side and that didn't pair well with the amazing home cut fries our table devoured because they rocked! Thumbs up!

The Ship is a Calgary institution. But more importantly they offer some of the best service in the city. I became addicted to the hamburgers and the warm staff who used to run them to my work across the street every other night. As a 'Bertabeef connoisseur, I've had them all and it's the best burger service in Calgary with by far the best Karma thrown in for good measure. Any place that treats the homeless well (as an unwritten policy) is a fantastic place IMO. I might ask if they can houss my ashes on one of the high shelves when I die. I am a 2006 Ship and Anchor bonspiel champion after all!
Gina Konschuh
great little hole in the wall! Sat outside-huge patio! one the last nice nights this fall Great server recommend the hummus and chefs olive starter #olivelove FOUR Star! short rib pizza Just an overall chill place
Michael Sutcliffe
Consistently excellent service and food....the absolute best desserts at the best price point.....everything that a great watering hole should be!
Tom Tschritter
Great beer, food, music, patio, pizza, and service. May the Ship never sink!
Wanita Willier
I wish they would bring back their recession pint. Its a good place to go but the beer is slightly overpriced. But the music was good on saturday afternoon and they always have the football on.
Talicia Wagner
The best pub in the City. Best prices, best burgers, best patrons and excellent staff. Can't speak highly enough of this YYC institution, it's actually a part of what makes this city great 👍🏻
Mcgowanbrian007
I have been coming to this pub for years. The pub food is exceptional. Service and atmosphere is always friendly. The burgers are excellent.
Alexapashovitz
Very rude waitress. I do get that the vibe is very laid back and don’t give a sh*t attitude. But that is no reason to scream at a customer who just said “excuse me”. It was loud and he was not trying to be rude, just wanted to pay our bill and leave. I’ve been a server for 7 years and I understand you get stressed out sometimes. But I have never screamed at a customer before, and I never would. Other than this lady every other time has been okay. So will give it the benefit of the doubt. Was just shocking to have someone be so horrible !!
Jacob YYC
The Ship is one of my favourite Red Mile establishments, just blocks from the Saddle Dome and has a lot of TV's for sports events. It can get quite busy but that is a reflection on the food and service and prices are not exorbitant.
Narmi Eejaa
Great spot for a cold one and a european football game! hala madrid! Staff are a mixture Ive had pleasant ones and some kind of short and rude but given the fact that they were shortstaffed and over run that night I think we can let that slide! Ambiance is dimly lit and tightly packed to give you a more intimate feeling. Various seating arrangements around Ship and the patrons are awesome as well. I met a cool group and joined in on the fun!

Cheers!
Marshmellie
Pretty good pub food! I love that they layered the toppings for the machos so you still have all the goodness when you reach the bottom. Very little restaurants do that so big thumbs up!
Love coming here for Tuesday Bingo Nights!
Codi Kingdon
Cheap tasty pub meals, great patio overlooking 17th on a busy corner. There are plenty of tvs for any sports night that your not able to get the 5 blocks to the saddledome!

Always friendly staff, great drink specials... this is what a pub really should be, go see for yourself!
Mermaid
I really like the atmosphere here, and there is also a diverse age range. They make really good rum and cokes, maybe it was just my particular bartender that evening. Food is very decent. Big basket of yam fries for $8. My partners burger wasn’t out of this world but it was good. The severs and customers are all very friendly. I’ve never had a bad experience here.

Came here after a Stamps game and immediately knew we needed nachos. We asked for ground beef without asking the price, that was our fault. When they arrived they were huge. There are two layers and both layers the cheese is actually cooked which I find is apparently the hardest thing for most restaurants to accomplish. And since I'm a huge nacho snob I can say this as I've eaten them at too many places to count. Tons of jalapeños, basically tons of toppings...except the ground beef. I saw a couple crumbles but for $6.00 the thing should be smothered in it, after all a LB of beef at the grocery store costs about the same.

Would I return again? Yes, in a heartbeat. But I would order the nachos as is without adding meat. There are enough other toppings to suffice without.
Mr Jimmy
One of my neighbourhood pubs. Other night I got "hey old man, where you going?" So I went in to visit with a buddy. Had a nice time, it is a great spot to catch up, people watch and share a table with new folks. I always meet new folks there. The burger is good, but I go for the visits and one of the most relaxing busiest patio's around,
Nicole.e.toner
Great atmosphere! You'll never feel uncomfortable in this bar - it's always full and always a fun time. Love the darts in the back corner.
Large patio in the summer and always happy servers.
Scruffle
I used to live next to the Ship -- those were the days. It's still a pretty eclectic crowd, a little awkward if you don't have tattoos. The Ship burger has been a staple for 20 years and it's still under $10. Still a good place to get smashed on the patio after all these years.
Shannon Marco
Still the best pub in Calgary. The service is friendly, and fast. You can tell the staff a well trained and veteran servers for the most part. The beer selection is awesome. The music and atmosphere is awesome. The food is a great price and very tasty. One of the last pubs of its kind.
S.W
I love the ship and anchor. Always makes for a fun day or night out. Service is always good with experienced servers and drink prices are reasonable especially since it's on 17 ave. Since it's yyc burger week they had a special burger on the menu that was outstanding ! I literally can't stop thinking about it - if you can hurry and try it. Homemade cheese bun, burger patty, spulumbo sausage patty and pulled pork - Devine !

Everybody has a culinary happy place. A place where the food is always tasty, the beer always cold, the people watching always fascinating, and the memories, well, memorable. For me that happy place is the Ship & Anchor. I could write at least 47 blogs to the tune of “How do I love thee” about the Ship, but we’ll stick to this one in support of one of the many good causes the ship gets behind.
Lee Sara Vanden Beukel
The ship is always bumping, busy and fun! Whether it's patio season, or just heading there for a quick drink with friends, this place is always alive. 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Christie L
Serving up some great food with daily specials combined with a variety of fresh pints on tap and great staff, the ship is a very welcoming pub that keeps you coming back.
Toothpaste.
This bar is one of the staples of Calgary night life for over 10 years. Next to Cowboys, you would be hard pressed to find a worse place to end up or start your night at. Just don't expect anything artisinal or yuppie about this place. Its a purely 20'something after work divebar.
Len Mastaler
Always great food. Always great portions at reasonable pub prices. They serve a mean Caesar also. Great staple pub in the Beltline. Definitely recommend
RaynaP
Affordable, huge servings, decent service, clean facilities, good bartending, good ambiance. There is no cocktail or a separate drinks menu, but their bar staff seem to know their shots. Like all pubs, this location is a treat to go back to with good company though it does get loud and busy on Fridays.
Jessica Heinrichs
There are not enough words to say or explain how great this pub is. It's the heart of the Calgary community. Everyone fits in from blue collar, white collar, tall, short, skinny, large, you name it but it's the best place to hang and catch up with friends whether it's the dead of winter sipping on an eggnog special or the heat of summer on the patio with a dark and stormy. Don't miss this place!
Miss Zin
This place is a Calgary staple!
There is nothing bad anyone can say about it. Its legendary. A place to be seen and also not to be seen. Amazing crowd, ambiance, staff, ....and surprisingly enough, fantastic food. Live music and gritty. Such a great, non pretentious pub on the trendy 17th AVE. Cheers! 🍻

The ship has been a staple in my adult life. I have been there more times than I could count and the beer is always full to the rim, food has literally never failed and I've had most things on the menu. The staff, for the most part, do what they ought and it is always comfortable to be there.

Space can be at a premium so get there earlier rather than later, but that isn't a fault. The patio is a delight :)

Definitely recommend it if you want a chilled relaxing place where you can be whatever you want (suit wearing to punk, hippie to hipster, all are welcome).
Poguzia
One of my favorite places to sit enjoy a drink on the patio and have some really decent pub food. They do breakfast as well. But their craft is fantastic.
Emily Donovan
It may appear to be a crowded pub; but expect some delicious food.
The soups and curry are fantastically flavorful. There's awesome portion sizes with the nachos and burgers.
My visiting friends were thoroughly impressed. It's a great place to socialize or hang after work. Love this place.
AlissaandWarrick
This place is a Calgary classic. You'll find all sorts of patrons here, from bikers to businessman to preps to yobbo's. We love this place as it will usually offer some good people watching. On top of this, the food is great for what it is worth! It's super cheap (the average meal is $11), the portions are large, and the food has always been good. They have a good selection of beers on tap and in bottles, but you won't find much wine or cocktails. This is a pub's pub. The inside is decorated like the inside of a ship and it is nice and cosy. They also have game nights (punk rock bingo) and live music. The patio is prime on summertime. A good place to take anyone!
Chris
Went to the ship and anchor to watch hockey one night after work. A small group of us were sitting over to the right of the bar beside the larger tv having some food and drinks. The tv kept shutting off so we just kept turning it back on. After this happened a few more times, we told our server and she told us some guy kept turning off the tv with the remote at the bar. She told us we could all move to the bar to watch the game but we decided to take our business down the street. Horrible way to treat your patrons. Would only recommend stopping here for a drink if you are walking down 17th during the summer on a Friday or Saturday night. Food is okay, but there are much better options in the area.
HungryInYYC
Definitely one of my top choices for a burger in this city! Burgers are juicy, with a great meat to bun ratio, and on top of that, very reasonably priced! Where else on 17th can you sit on a patio and have an awesome burger for under $10?
Sam
Used to be a great place to celebrate but now the place is filled with loud obnoxious patrons and staff. The eggnog is alright during the holiday season.
World Foodie
Was here last Friday night, patio was busy as the weather was good..still managed to get a table for 5. Average food menu, nothing too good. I think what makes this place fun is their patio, its at a prime location and esp on busy nights you get to feel the buzz of 17th ave. Keep in mind they only serve beers for drinks & very limited selections of cocktails. It's a pub so don't expect wine either ..though other pubs do have wines this one doesn't! They don't serve mojitos or margaritas either. So cocktail/wine lovers this place is probably not for you!
Hitting The Sauce
Zee ordered the butter chicken, and boy did it look good. I could smell the curry from across the table. The heaping portion of chicken and basalti rice came with naan bread too. I could see nice chunks of tomatoes, peas and onions. Z gave two thumbs up for the curry, which he said was hot, flavourful and spicy.
-amanvel
Good central watering spot. Always theatrical. Every night is different. Better food can be had elsewhere. The patio is a great a spot to spend a social afternoon and evening.
Christopher Zadworny
Although this is one of my all time favorite watering holes in Calgary, the service makes it so I'm never going here as I am pressed for time.
YEGirl
I was here to watch the flames game. Because it was so busy, our drinks and food took forever to come out and the service was not that great. But the food was pretty good - greasy pub food. I would come back here if I had to.
Mark
made an account just to write about this place. my third time coming to the ship. the service is absolutely fantastic, i love the vibe i get as soon as i enter. the food was lackluster when i first came in march but the past two times ive been here in june it has been great!!! i had the crispy chicken sandwich and the french onion soup a couple nights ago and it was DELICIOUS. you must come here and try their new menu items!! great service and food.

Home away from home.

I've been drinking Guinness, and Lemon drops at The Ship for over 15 years, and it's never disappointed me. I've taken everyone from first dates, and close friends to my parents, and other family members here. I love the ship burger (loaded), and the deep fried pickles are always great after a few beers.

Whether you're looking for some cheap delicious pub food, or you're just looking for a good place to tie one on, The Ship is the place to be.
Thegirlwhoeats
Who puts bell peppers in salsa??. Ordered chips and salsa. When it came there was a mountain of chips and a tiny container of salsa. The proportions were WAY off. The salsa, if you can even call it that, was bland and had bell peppers in it. No spice at all and tasted sweet like ketchup. Can't comment on the rest of the food but just wanted to warn people to stay away from this appetizer!
Vanessa
Horrible service. Not once did a waitress stop by our table or the table next to us. Good atmosphere and great location but if you want service I do not recommend this bar.
Monika
Great experience after a horrible horrible experience at Local 510. Great waitress Jenelle....

Repulsive Service. I went to go see Holland vs Costa Rica and was denied entrance because my ID did not succumb to "Ship and Anchor standards" when it was in fact government issued ID. IBoth the manager and bouncer (who both looked younger than me) clearly rejected my money and my return to that disgusting bar. The same government issued ID got me permitted into other bars willing to take my service and even at Stampede. Really appalling service. Don't take your success for granted because when it's not busy people like myself will remember these things and look past your bar. I cannot stand when common sense and human logic is not used because two ignorant morons. Shame on them, honest to goodness. Never have I been so appalled by anyone. That same photo ID was used to verify myself to renew my passport but yet it did not mean the standards of Ship & Anchor, some poverty bar in Calgary. I'm not going to bend over backwards for some 3rd world TV's and mediocre food just because no one else in Calgary realizes there's better places to go. Crown & Rose is highly recommended to watch World Cup matches. It's outside in a tent and they have a 80 inch TV they show it on.
Mike
HORRIBLE Service. Incredibly disappointed with their customer service. We went to watch the Brazil-Colombia World Cup game, it was very busy and after the game ended they started to kick people out for celebrating. I have never experienced such unfriendly service in Calgary, if you can't tolerate passionate soccer fans, then don't show World Cup games at your pub. Never going back there again after the way that I witnessed customers being treated. Unbelievable and felt really discriminated against.
Lindsay
Literally the WORST customer service I have ever received. I am a server myself (5 plus years) so I can totally understand the odd mess up or longer wait times when busy. But this was horrible. It was Lilac fest so I understand it was busy but common... We got a table for 8 on the patio, our server came to the table and said "what do you want"... Than she proceeded to "remember" all 8 drink and food orders without writing it down. She brought singles instead of doubles, and screwed up 4 of the 8 orders. One of the guests at the table had ordered poutine as a side dish, the other a soup. She brought their sandwiches out with fries and when we said something about it, she argued and said "No you ordered the fries". She finally brought out the correct side dishes BUT charged us for them as if she was charging the appetizer price...WOW. She brought the table single Caesars in tall glasses.. Even though we all ordered doubles and thought that's what we had been receiving all day. She didn't smile ONCE or treat anybody with a shred of respect. She's lucky we gave her enough of a tip to cover her tip pool. Food was mediocre. Would never go back and all 8 people sitting with me aren't either. I will tell everyone I know too! This is my very first urban spoon review.. Made an account just to rant. I'm still mad and this was a week ago! Grr

Thumbs up for The Ship... I gave this place the thumbs up due to the great service from the bartender, and the cheeseburger special (5 bucks) that I had. I remember this place from many years ago, and the food was good back then too. If I was choosing a pub in that area,I would not hesitate to go there. Best to go early though, as it gets packed with people quickly!

The Ship never gets old!. I love this place. Its a mix of all types of people from all walks of life. You can sit next to a business man in a suit who is sitting next to a hippy street kid. The staff are generally pretty friendly and give good service. Drinks are always cold and the food is quite tasty for pub food! :)
H.deep
Bad food. The food is greasy and horrible. The patrons are not the friendliest bunch of people and this is coming from someone who moved here from the Maritimes. I go out to so many bars and pubs on 17th, but this is the ONLY one place where I have met unfriendly patrons. Everywhere else, I can go, sit at the bar and make new friends.
Ag
ARrrrrrr Matey. Love the breakfasts. Great patio and nice unpretentious pub. Always good service. Obviously this is not the place to go if you are wanting organic ingredients and a creative menu, but for pub food, it's great.
Lvincent1979
Delicious vegetable curry and they make gluten free pizza which we all shared, it was good. Food here is always good and prices are great.
SL
Overrated. The 2 good things I will give this substandard, grungy, musty, claustrophobic pub is its burger and patio. Checked this "Calgary institution" out after hearing all the gushing hype, but from the service to the ambience and overall experience of the place, "OVERrated" is an "UNDERstatement". As for the good burger and patio there's other and much better options elsewhere. I say jump Ship! to infinitely superior "National" next door.
Barnburner55
Don't waste your time.. I don't understand how people can say this place isn't pretentious. Between the doorman at the front sucking back cigarettes in front of customers to the servers pretending not to see you, I can't recommend this as a place to visit with my friends. Thank God there's a bar for adults right next door, as we left not half an hour into our evening this past Saturday.
Tylerdalton12310
Good food. Really solid food, excellent soups, always tasty features. Lamb shank $12 is the best I've ever had. Turducken sausage and mash and bison was amazing too. Best value food, great spot for lunch especially
Marie
Great place!. I Met my husband here 7 1/2 years ago! We frequent quite often and always have a blast! Staff and food are fantastic! One of my favourite pubs in the city!
Sploogeonfood
This place is disgusting. My last review got removed for being too vivid.

To keep this short and apparently approvable.
This place smells bad, the food is below average, you have to be quite uncultured to enjoy it. The people inside all look depressed and a large demographic show signs consistent among alcoholics. The place is dark and feels gross. The servers are extremely rude, I have not tipped maybe 5 times in my life and this was one of them. It smells bad.

Food, atmosphere, people, smell
All given a 0. So unimpressive.
Deiter
What happened to the Ship?. We arrived for brunch on the weekend and only were able to get a table in front of the stage - no room on the infamous patios. It was pretty loud in this section and the waitress took way too long to take our first order. On top of this there was an MC on stage going on and on like an MC at a stripclub. So annoying. Aside from that the food was just OK, service was terrible and I swear our server hadn't showered in days and reeked of booze. This is not the Ship I remember.
Foodie
Great Steak Sandwich. Love the atmosphere and they have the best steak sandwich in the city! I believe the beef is from a local farm.
Danielle
The best of the best.. They may not have great food, but they have the best patio in the city, and it is absolutely my favourite pub in the city. Great service, awesome crowd and atmosphere. Never had a bad time at Ship!
IsChad
I love this place! Great Staff and a Stellar Vibe! Been a favourite for 10yrs now... Something's remain good, always!
D Sneddon
Great food. Eat at the Ship lots, mainly for lunch. Great features, delicious lamb shank and great burgers. Haven't been in the evenings, it's always packed and lined up, I guess that says it all. My tip is go for lunch it's great!
Bettyboop12
Best eats in town. Best lamb shank and the loaded burger is awesome. We love the ship, best eats and bang for ya $. Love the ship xxx

If you are ever visiting Calgary, just for a weekend, you must go here. It was one of the first pubs I went to, and definitely have been back again and again. It's pretty much a Calgary icon - try to go for punk rock bingo on Thursdays - it's super fun! The nachos are always amazing - such reasonable prices for food and drinks! Definitely pleasing for all crowds - especially when the patio is open - one if the best ones in the city by far.
ThePubGuy
Just a Good Place to Go. There is nothing that jumps out to me at the Ship and Anchor Pub, but for some reason it has an interesting appeal to it. I recommend checking it out
Heather
Ugh.. Not trying to be prissy or anything here, but i have been to the ship on several occasions and always see something grotty. just ew. this one night I went, it was like an entire section of people had drifted together because they all reeked the same way: sweaty, rotting balls. gross? i know lots of people like it because the crowd is what "it" is; what "it" is, i have no idea. they could work on their speed/friendliness/accuracy of service, the hostility and prettiness of their servers, and lighting. i know i'm ugly, but when i'm blind and ugly, its really not going to be a good thing. patio is great during the summer, and yes, the beer is cold, and yes, drinks of all sorts can be ordered, and yes, either species of human can go to meet the opposite, or same species. so. there we have it. i'm complaining, i won't go back, but its there.
Jmac
Went Monday at 11am, got right in place is unique to say the least. Clean comfy and lots of character. Ordered the "big breakfast" it was a large serving for the price $8 and tasted pretty good. Atmosphere 6.5/10 Food 6/10 and service 7/10 keep in mind it was not busy.
Dawn
It's all about the patio! The food is average at best.
Mo
Brunch was really good. We went there on a Sunday, when it was quieter and not so busy as in the evenings. The omelette and breakfast burrito were one of the bests I've had around here.
Smarty
Standard pub grub. The breakfast we had was simple and tasty. Not to mention that they serve mimosas. Winner!
David Speed
Great food. Best value food In town! Love the chicken curry and always have some excellent features. Even the standard burger is good and cheap
Steph
Very disappointing. The food at the ship was very poorly prepared and over priced. My steak salad was literally a bowl of ONLY lettuce and overcooked steak that was overcooked and a cheap cut. No flavor and a very unoriginal menu. P.S. the staff should start wearing deoderant, it would be less offensive. The patio also smells like rottten urine in the heat. They should hire an actual chef to upgrade the menu and teach the staff how to cook.
Will never return.
Orange Blossom Special
Ship & Anchor… It’s like coming home. I haven’t been to this spot in years! A favourite of mine in the mid-90s (although I have passed it many times since, while perusing 17th Ave). Always busy and still looking the same, it was like coming home to ol’ faithful when my friend and I dropped in on a Saturday afternoon and hung out on their fantastic patio! It’s amazing how, in all this time, things haven’t really changed: Same attitude, same ambiance, same disinterested service from the waitress, same great greasy food (Ship fries $4.50), and same great prices on low-quality beer (Pint of PBR $5.95)! It’s comforting to know that no matter how long you’ve been away, the Ship & Anchor is a spot you can return to and pick up where you left off! Good on ya guys!
Ronald
The good old chimp & spanker. I'm completely suprised that the S&A is still there. I used to live a few blocks south of the bar in the late 80's early 90's. The ship was always packed back then because it was tied for the best bands, broads and booze with The Republic, just down the way on 1st St. & 17th. Long live The Ship!
Kayleigh Szott
50/50. The first time I came I was initially really excited because so many friends and colleagues really enjoyed their meals/experiences at the Ship. However my first experience proved to be less enjoyable with a rock hard chicken burger, the second time was much better with a bacon burger that was delicious. I can't decide if I like enough to go back for food but their location and patio are great!
NikitaLaBomb
LOVE this place!!!. Kind & fun-loving staff, awesome atmosphere, and the best patio- hands down. Always a sweet & eclectic live music line up. Tuesday night "Punk Rock Bingo" is a friggin blast! A bar where you can come in a suit or sweats and enjoy being yourself. The Ship will always have a special place in my heart.
G-Unit
Uncommon place for uncommon people. Seems like an everyday, rough-around-the-edges, grundgy, dank dive of a pub. What makes this ***the best pub in the city*** though is a perfect storm (get it ? ... har har) of all the right elements - unparalleled location, great south-exposed patios, diverse crowd that is tolerant of everyone else, great vibe, huge beer selection, great music, great events, little emphasis on sports (except for soccer ... woot !), dark cocoon-like atmosphere, and decent cheap food. And it feels like being in an old galleon ! The mgmt here appreciates its customers by keeping food and beer prices reasonable. It's been getting a little too "douche-y" lately and some mainstream music finds its way into the mix on busy nights, hopefully they fix that problem...
Culinarytravel
Since coming to calgary 4 years ago this is one of my favorites!! Plenty good choices of pints , the loaded ship burger is awesome as well as a good menu with veggan choices. Good service and the place is always busy!! Have to be early for the patio. For a pub i would have to say it has great good priced food and freindly service. This is my only eatting spot on the red mile.. I would reccomend the ship to anyone as i have always had great food and enjoy it also as a pint stop.
J-Mill
Will be around forever. Love the vibe here. Kind of prefer it mid-week when its not completely packed. Hardly the fault of this well run and cool joint.

Food's awful. This place is way overrated. Only good when you're drunk

Pretentious. Good food, but such a pretentious group of staff and patrons. Would a smile kill you?? We get it! You hang/work at the Ship....

Warm Goats Cheese Salad w/ Roasted Mediterranean Veggies and Pesto Drizzle. I think this might be the best salad I've ever had!

Fav Restaurant/Pub in town. Best food, lowest price!. We try to go here at least once every week - it's our favorite pub and the food is awesome. They've been making changes to the menu but finally settled on one. For a while, we tried to eat at diff restaurants, but typically spent 50-100% more and got shittier food with less drink choices. Overall I'd rather go to the ship any day, so we almost exclusively go here & to a few sushi places in town. They've got an awesome breakfast too. Nachos are huge, deep fried pickles are great, and you can't go wrong with a ship burger. There aren't many things on the menu I wouldn't recommend, so go try it out for yourself!

Good times.... The Ship is always a great place to get together with friends. I personally love their beer selection and as bar food goes it's not bad. I DO hate that if you sit down it seems to be expected that you order drinks from a server, but when it's packed you'd get quicker service from the bar. But otherwise.. a fairly diverse and good lookin' clientele, friendly staff and great ambiance. A Beltline staple!

Repeat and repeat again. Oh my gosh, this place is such a gem. I stumbled upon it one day when I was looking for a place to grab a drink. I agree 100% with the other reviews, this place gets packed! and for good reason, the food is fresh and hommade, the service is quick and friendly, great pub atmosphere, awesome vibes, and amazing beer selection and drinks! The bartenders actually know how to make a decent cocktail and pour a proper brew. Recoomend to all my friends!

Delicious gluten free sandwich!. Love the Ship, love the ambience, love the people, love the beer (especially now that they carry gluten free beer!!!) and was astounded and extremely, extremely pleased to find out that they have gluten free food options!

The sandwich was delicious! Thank you Ship, I love you.

I just feel the need to defend the ship about the "not impressed" review. Sorry buddy but if you were in the industry you would know that aglc rules are one bottle beer per hour is the legal amount you can be served. A pint far exceeds a bottle. The ship has a right to slow down service if that amount is exceeded. As far as your review, the bartender said you could try again in 20 min. YOU WERENT CUT OFF! He was just slowing your service down. TO THE SHIP AND ANCHOR I LOVE YOU AND YOU ARE GREAT!.

Great place. When you're making dinner plans you'd just assume the Ship is busy, because 90% of the time is. But if you're around, stop by, see if there's a spot on the patio, because the food is definitely worth it. Way better than the default pub food you'd expect to eat in Calgary, I can almost say you could go to the Ship even if you're not thirsty.
Add the great atmosphere and a good selection of beer on tap and you got yourself a great evening.

Gluten Free available. Just ask! Huevos on gluten-free bread from Care Bakery was tasty - and CHEAP! $7.50! Nice.

Thanks guys from @NomadMobile food truck in Edmonton. Really appreciate the tip.

Not Impressed. I was out with some friends on tuesday night, enjoying a couple of beers. Around 1:00 am, We decided we should go to the Ship to meet some people and enjoy a couple more beers. I'm not much of a drinker, but I normally have a great time at the ship (good clientele, staff, food, atmosphere, etc.) The bouncer ID'd my friends and I and let us in.

This is where my issue comes: I had had 6 beers that night over the course of 4 hours and when I asked the curly-haired, bearded Bartender for a pint of keiths, he flat out told me that I had had enough and he couldn't serve me, but to come talk to him in 20 minutes (I didn't, i've NEVER been cut off in my life and i have been far more drunk AT the Ship, so i wasn't about to buy anything after that). I got a glass of water and sat with my friends, who were all far more intoxicated than myself.

So if I'm sober and I am refused service at the Ship and Anchor, and the guy who's falling asleep in the chair next to me can get a beer, I'm wondering why I should even want to give them my money ever again? This is a shame because as I said, I very much enjoy the place. As someone who works in the restaurant industry, I know how you should treat a customer, no matter what they're wearing, and that was not even close. They just lost a good customer.

Nachos used to be good. Now 15 bucks for a single serve portion. Brutal portions

Impressive. Best veggie burger I ever had, keep up the good work CHEERS!!
Bryan Birn
Veggie Burger. By far the best veggie burger I've ever had.

Even better if you get it with Bacon, and the regular Ship burger toppings.

Trust me, you won't regret it.

What a Place. Good music, pretty decent beer selection (Creemore Springs is a must for me), GREAT PATIO and ambiance. The people watching is great, and as far a pub food goes, this is really as good as pub food gets. The prices are beyond reasonable. This is the textbook definition of a rockin' pub.

ERIN MORROW. Drop what you are doing NOW and go visit Erin Morrow at the Ship n' Anchor for an attitude adjustment....and some cocktails.

A lament for the past. I used to eat here at least twice a week, the menu had interesting options and the specials were always miles above what you would expect from a pub.

I don't know if someone got fired or someone quit, but the menu shrank down to just a slip and the specials became uninteresting.

food's still eatable, but uninteresting.

Obviously. A staple of calgary existence. the lame shank is good
