Review The Garrison Pub - Calgary

J. G.
Amazing food. Awesome place to have drinks and catch up with friends. Great pizza!! Probably one of the best in the city. Don’t find service to be overly friendly but that’s not why I go so don’t think it should have a bearing on the review.
Geoff Jumpsen
The Garrison is always, always a pleasant destination. Food is reliably tasty, portions are more than sufficient, beer selection is generous, and the fries are among the best in the city. Service is gracious, pleasant and professional.

Worst potato skins ever. Small, overcooked, hard as a rock. My bad. Should have sent them back. Overpriced Caesar.. Did like the laid-back vibe, however, and will maybe go back and drink beer 🍺🍺🍺.

The garrison is a great local pub, friendly, down to earth with actual locals from ML and GW. Food is pretty traditional pub food, wings are good, but for me, I love the ambience the most.
Laura M
Super helpful server. Great drinks and even better food !! I'll be back. Get the smoked meat sandwich!

A true gem of a pub right in our Marda Loop area. Great service and excellent food...the fresh ground sirloin burger beats the stuffing out of Clives and 5 Fat Boys and the fries are exceptional. Locally sourced products and Guinness on tap. Prices are great and I'd drive miles to spend time here...but even better that we can meander over on foot.

Great food Beer. Need I say more Staff very friendly
Stephanie Morrell
Great atmosphere, food is yummy. Great service, very clean. The server Robin is awesome . And the cook, Kristian, also awesome They should immediately get raises.
Jerod Fahlman
I've never had a bad meal here, but the steak sandwich and caesar salad just might be the best I've had in the city! Cut with a fork tender, and a perfect medium rare. Thanks for a great meal!

Excellent Service - amazing food. Holiday Monday stopped in for the infamous Monte Cristo ! Not disappointed - just as good as remembered. Had the Crispy Noodle Prawns and a Beef Dip - most flavorful food we have had out in a long time. The young waitress was a breath of fresh air - loved her job and did it well. We will be back !
Tanya Zoratti
Ordered a pizza from here and wasn't even cooked! The dough was so mushy and gross probably in the oven for maybe 5 minutes just to make it look like they made an effort, never again will I eat there again
Amy Walzak
The garrison food is absolutely unreal!! The staff is amazing and are all super friendly. Overall, a great neighbourhood pub!
Anthony Ilosvay
Always a great meal. Love the Sheppards Pie and the Prosciutto and Arugula pizza is amazing. Nice tight little beer selection too. Not too many to confuse you and constantly kept up to date. Service is quick and friendly.
Johnny Martin
Steak sandwich was crap, but in fairness most food there is good, but today the steak was very disappointing, how a chef cooks and puts that on a plate and feels good about it is curious.
Stephanie Flierjans
Terrific neighbourhood pub!! Great selection and great management
Philip Mackay
The food is excellent but a little pricey. The servers are great and the ambience is quaint.

Many thanks to Shannon and gang for helping make my husbands birthday memorable!! Amazing service - amazing atmosphere and most of all - amazing memories. Thank you!!!

Cool little Pub by the famous My Ice Cream Shop. The food here is surprisingly good. If your in the Marda Loop area I would definetely try this place out instead of all tje places on the main marda loop street.
Patti
This is one if the best pubs in the Marda Loope area. Unfortunately the food quality has gone down significantly since the summer. The last couple times we ordered pizza it was underwhelming, and for $25 a pizza this was super disappointing as it used to be fabulous. I hope they can step up the food quality.

Consistently great food, and service. Always get the hot turkey sandwich, if it's on the specials board! The pizza is one of my favorites in the city.

The Garrison has become one of my favourite places to meet pals. Great pub atmosphere, always sweet service and the food is enjoyable. The other attraction for me is that the house beer is Parallel 49's Craft Lager. IMHO its the best lager out there. Thanks to Laura and Team Garrison for many happy hours. Be back soon.

Lately L and I have been hanging out at the Garrison Pub and Eatery. I like the crowd and the food is superior to your average pub. Each time I’ve visited, the place was packed with customers. The two servers were busy as bees dropping off food and beers and picking up orders. I never mind the wait. The service is friendly and apologetic if we have to wait a little extra.

First time here tonight and we had a good experience. Nothing special but it wasn't as bad as the other reviews I have read. Place was quite packed but we were able to find a high top near the bar. Couple of tv around so we were able to catch the Flames game. We started with hot wings which came out high and tasty. 9 wings with some carrots and celery ans side of ranch for $12. I got the Cajun chicken sandwich with Onion rings for $1.50 more. The onion rings were crispy, hot and delish. The sandwich was ok, not what I was expected. My husband really enjoyed his pizza. Service was good and attentive.

Terrible meal. How do you mess up fish and chips ? You just put them in the deep fryer and then take them out. And pricey. Almost $ 30 for a pint of beer and fish and chips that were awful. Not good at all.
Ally
Love the burger here and the yam fries. I have also had the fish and chips and it was good. Cozy neighborhood pub. Service is usually good. It was a little slow last time due to the number of customers.
PersonalTrainer147
A perfect after work place for a drink! The service was friendly and quick. Great artisan pizza. A bit expensive but expected in the area. Will be back for more!

An Oasis from the typical bars around the city. Non pretentious, great food, great service, pure and simple.
Order a pizza or the fish and chips, you won't be disappointed.
Food4thoughtz
The best chicken tenders that I have ever eaten from a pub. I don't usually have dinner at pubs but when I do, I only ever come to this one.
Terry Wray
They're putting in a separate pizza take-out kitchen! #bestYYCpizza

Man, the food at this place is legit. It's not typical pub food, it's elevated. Everything tastes homemade. Not like original Joe's which has a greasy, restaurant chain quality. I love the pizza here, all the sandwiches, soups – everything is top notch. However, as other reviewers have noted the service is terrible! We get takeout from here a lot and at least 50% of the time there is a problem with the order. Like, there is no dip with the beef dip or an item is wrong or missing. If you're getting takeout from here, make it a habit to check the food before you leave. The worst part is that whenever there is a problem (which, like I said is frequent) the servers act like it's your problem! No apology, no nothing while you stand and wait for your food like a twit. But damn is the food ever good. I would stop ordering from here but I can't.

Service is a joke. Not a fan of the place. Servers are too cool.
Food is decentI
Don't even try take out

Kyla. I really like Garrison Pub and the food is great, but the service isn't good, or even average and there's a particular waitress named Maddie who would benefit from some guidance down the path of decent customer service. I ordered a couple of burgers and showed up and only one was made (honest mistake). I asked for two new ones because waiting for a second would mean the first would be cold and not enjoyable...happy to wait and pay for both (secretly hoping Maddie might take some responsibility and maybe cut me a little deal :)...nope! Asked if she would call when they were ready..."we don't do that". Maybe since you made a mistake you could work with me, Maddie!?...nope.

Best Pub Food! I love the G.... Best Pub Food!
I love the Garrison, we have always have very friendly and good service and the food is always excellent. This is mine and my boyfriends go to local pub if we have no food in the house or fancy a drink or two. There isn't much room or many table which can result in long wait times but we don't mind the wait. Would highly recommend this location to anyone looking for a local pub with good food for an easy going low-key night.

Not good. I had not been to the pub for a while probably 2 years as I moved to another area in the city . So a few friends and I decided to go to the pub and we had really bad service from the minute we walked in. The the girls were trying to be so funny around us but actually made me feel like a weirdo towards my friend. They are very touchy and then they insisted that we have pizza Pizza Pizza. we did not go for pizza we had decided to go for a couple wings and a couple beers like the good old times. however because she was so insisting on eating a pizza we decided to have pizza Pizza .I got home that night and i was sick all night . After I decided to call my friends in the morning to see if they were okay. they all had my scene issue: we were totally bloated and we believe it was the pizza. I will never go there again and neither will my friends.

Service Too Slow. We came in for dinner on a Tuesday night. The place seemed very low on servers. After waiting a half an hour for someone to take our order, we left and went elsewhere for dinner. We will not be returning.

Love this place!. Great food and service! Never had a bad meal there. Try the thin crust pizza it's amazing!

Just for "The Wedge". This place can get pretty crazy, often with only two servers. I think they do a great job considering. So your service may depend on how someone else's night has gone. This place has made some pretty big renos to their kitchen, and they either just expanded or now specifically deliver. So that's nice. Also love the parkinglotside window into said kitchen--nice touch.

Well, I will go to this place again and again just for The Wedge salad. It is amazing. As I'm not too deep into eating dairy I get it with the house vinaigrette, and I don't lose any flavour as far as I'm concerned. It's a wedge of iceberge lettuce with diced tomatoes and green onions with crispy diced bacon! Wash that down with your drink of choice.

Has gone downhill. This was a former favorite, but since the owner apparently spends less time there, I have become disappointed in the overall quality of both food and service. On my last two visits, one for lunch and one for dinner, I encountered poorly prepared barely edible food and at dinner, it was topped off with chaotic disorganized service.
StephMB
Really good pub food. Honestly - I love that most of their menu has items that are in-house made and very tasty. Seems difficult these days to find a good burger..this is a good place to go for that. I have tried many of the items on their menu and have never been disappointed. Generous quantities as well. Their baked chicken burger is awesome as well as their fish features.
TheHunger
Well, the server told us it was an extra dollar to make our drinks doubles...but when the bill came, it was an extra $3.10 on top of the $2.99 per drink. For 14 drinks that really adds up. Not happy about that.

Food is ok. Typical grease spoon bar food. I do like the monte christo though.
Time2Dine
The food is ok, but the service is awful. You're lucky to see your server, more or less to ask if you're ok. Our server seemed most interested in our table when it came time for the cheque. We work in the service industry and our crappy tip was a reflection of our crappy service. I wish I could say this was our first experience with this, but honestly these girls are far too busy everytime on their phones, chatting amongst themselves, or finding ways to be inefficient and rude.

Great burger but .... That's were it ends, servers "holier than thou" attitudes seems to be par for the course. They do, however, have a great Fresh Ground Sirloin Burger, not the Garrison burger ... trust me on this one.

Let me clarify that not all the servers leave you feeling cold, but they are in the majority.

Tried pretty well everything on the menu and the burger was the only about average item, The pizza sauce tastes like Ragu, my ex-roommate used to put it on everything so I know the taste profile.

To end the review off I'd like to say, who uses gravy instead of Au Jus sauce on a beef dip? Garrison, that's who

Enjoy
Amanda
Came here on the weekend for my birthday and again last night. Everything I've tried on the menu is delicious, service is great - friendly but not in your face. One of our new favorites!

Comfortably familiar. Every time I go to the Garrison, I vow to try something different on their menu...but somehow, I just can't and keep going back to my classic salmon meal which comes with rice and either the house or caesar salad. The sauce for the salmon is creamy and perfectly complements the rice while the house salad, with its burst of strawberries and a light vinegar/oil dressing keeps everything bright and fresh. No matter what night of the week - the pub is always busy with regular and new clientele but the service is always prompt and efficient with a smile. Way to go, Garrison! Thumbs up!
Mike
Feel fortunate that this place is right near our doorstep. Great pub food at a reasonable price, especially the Fish & Chips. The flavor in the garrison burger is also quite good - my only recommendation to the cooking staff would be to find a sturdier bun! Usually falls apart pretty quickly as you are eating it.
Philip Mackay
Gotta try the Garrison Burger, so big you'll need a fork & knife to eat it.
James Robinson
Besides having the best chicken burger in the city, all the other menu items that I have tried have been delicious and well prepared, I am a huge fan of the consistency and quality of the food. Add the always cold Stella draft and decent service and you have a pleasant outing

Best pub in the area.. A better midrange price to Fergus and Bix

Great Food! Great Service!. I eat here at least twice a week and always leave happy and full. They have great food and drink specials daily and everything on the menu is tasty! The house salad is one of my favorites, crisp lettuce, toasted pine nuts, and fresh strawberries topped with a light vinaigrette.

My only quip is that they don't use or have regular bread for the sandwich's, most days I don't like eating half a baguette when I order my BLT.

The servers are a fun bunch of girls that will remember you and most likely your order after you've been a couple times. Great service is rare in this city but you will find it here and with a smile to boot!

Beef Dip Rocks.. The Beef Dip is second to none ...mmmmmm gravy!
The owner Richard is good guy too!

Great Pub. Love their fish and chips. Can be nosiy but a good neighbourhood haunt!

Best Burger in Town. I really love the Garrison Burger. It goes all out and doesn't hit one bad note. I haven't gone on an exhaustive search but I have tried a burger just about every place I've ever eaten and nothing beats the Garrison Burger.

Better than average pub fare. 2013 Update: Serious competition has moved in the area now that Original Joes has a new menu and Fergus & Bix has been open for a while. Also I have to agree with other reviewers that the Servers at the Garrison don't usually seem happy that you're there. I think the owner is going to have to step up his game if he's going to keep former regular's like me.
-------------------------
I've eaten at the Garrison many times over the years, and it'a always been better than average for pub fare. Friends who I've taken to the Garrison have commented afterwards that they thought it was better than Original Joe's, which is a little bigger and better known. I also have to mention that their burgers are quite possibly the best in the city; I know this is a bold claim, but I'd encourage any doubters to try for themselves.

Great food friendly service like the space. There today on a Sunday afternoon. Halibut and chips made me think I was on a coast, good fries. Cold draft and helpful
friendly staff. Wish it was in Killarney. A good place to go for wings on weeknight after a meeting. An earlier review mentioned that it was called Garrison after the housing development ! ? It is called Garrison after Currie Barracks and Lincoln Park the army and air force "garrisons" dating back to the world wars. The military themes on the walls didn't sink in.

Garrison Goodness.. Went to Garrison tonight, have not been in quite awhile, and I am scratching my head as to why?

While it is not perfect, but what small pub is, the food is great, the portions well endowed, the prices quite reasonable. The service is worth mentioning as well.

D was feeling snacky so we ordered lamb spring rolls to start, then after looking over at an adjacent table decided to order some chicken wings and split the halibut and chips feature our server recommended.

Kudos:
The spring rolls rocked, the wings were larger that usual and good, the halibut had great flavour, and the fries were excellent! *Honourable mention for the gravy best pub gravy I have had.

Suggestions:
Cook the halibut a wee bit less, the flavour was awesome, but the texture was dry and flakey.

The spring rolls were listed as coming with a mango something or other, but instead came with bottled sweet chili sauce. Really recommend a minted yogurt garlic dip.

Looking forward to coming back to sample the crazy Garrison Burger again.

Great Fries. As the title states, this pub has really good fries. It seems to be hard to stumble upon a place that has even decent fries lately, so this place definitely gets a thumbs up!
James
Best pub food in the sw. I frequent the garrison for its food mainly but definitely enough tvs to catch the game. in my eyes they have the best fish n chips in the city, and the garrison burger is monsterous. everything seems to be made fresh so its a nice change from all the processed junk i get elsewhere.
Wes
Not a bad pub to have a drink or too if you live in the naberhood but the food is lakeing at best
Fat Cat
Same old. Same blah food as any other pub. Atmosphere is odd. Acoustics are terrible. Why bother other than its close.

Surprise in Marda Loop. Marda Loop is filled with some great little spots to snack at and the Garrison Pub is no different. This pub has some of the best food I've ever eaten in a Pub throughout town. All the dishes will leave you pretty filled but still with enough room to have a couple of shots or drinks.
Parking isn't exactly the best feature of the venue. Nobody can seem to decide if the parking lot is angled or normal perpendicular style. So I would suggest to just park on the opposite end of the street.
There is usually a solid crowd in the pub but the staff is on the ball and gets your orders out ASAP.

Good Food and Fun. The Garrison Pub & Eatery is a very popular place to hang out for good food and a boisterous pub atmosphere, especially on game nights.

Sports fans can keep their eyes on the game with TV's at every angle.

The Garrison (named after nearby Garrison districts, no doubt) excel at a decent assortment of pub fare (my fave is their awesome Monte Cristo sandwich) plus they also have better than average pizza, and burgers. There are a few surprising items on the menu - baked brie, crispy noodle prawns and lamb spring rolls. A foodie sports-nut would be so pleased.

The decor is pub-comfortable with garage-door style openings at the front which are usually raised in warmer weather. This lends a real fresh air neighborhood feel to the place.

It's a good spot for a quiet lunch but can be louder and hard to get in at night, again, especially on game nights. Come early if you want to ensure a seat.

I highly recommend going here and trying some of their hot sauce. It is a little bit on the spicy side, so be careful not to burn the taste buds right off your tongue! If you don’t have a taste for hot sauce, then definitely try the chicken tenders, the salmon salad and nachos are also amazing

We have a friend who loves eating as much as we do who has recommended we try Garrison Pub. Every time he goes there he texts us a pic of this crazy delicious looking burger. On Wednesday Fuzzy and I got a chance to head over there to meet one of our contributing writers, Guy. I've posed the question before about Garrison Pub and have heard nothing but good things about this place. It really is a pub, nothing special on the inside, just tables, a bit dingy but it suits the place. They have a bunch of different things on the menu, appy's, salads, burgers, sandwiches, and entree's. I've heard the burgers, pizzas and fish and chips are good. Fuzzy and I decided on the Garrison Burger which is loaded with House ground homemade beef patty topped with sautéed mushrooms, onions, bacon, ham, and cheddar cheese. The bun topped with mustard, mayo, pickle, lettuce and tomato. That's right! Shaved ham! What a great idea, I guess they call it a hamburger, so why not? It was a pretty good burger, I
