Review John's All Day Breakfast And Lunch - Calgary

You come here not because you want a fancy brunch spot with the glitzy decor and instagram worthy pics. This place is about the atmosphere, service, good food and the home feel you get as a breakfast/brunch spot. Local + family owned - we are always welcomed with friendly staff. It can get busy in the morning but the wait is never too long. The pancakes have a crispy edge to it and resemble that of Mickey mouse - overall good pancakes that captures a good mix texture of crisp and fluffy. The sourdough option for bread is a must here. It stands very unique to any other breads tried in diners. Food is not greasy nor oily. The menu goes from $9-16 and food is worth/reflective of that amount charged. Some patio seating as well as indoor. Would recommend getting the clubhouse!

A great little spot to eat breakfast comfortably. Great, attentive service. We sat out in the patio and the street wasn’t noisy at all, didn’t want to leave because of how comfortable the environment was. I’m lactose intolerant and they offered oat milk for my coffee which was amazing! Would definitely recommend. The food was great!

I really enjoyed the atmosphere, service, and food here. Classic traditional western brunch food, cooked very well and I would definitely recommend. Although it would’ve been nice if they had a dish with chicken instead of everything being ham, bacon or sausage. The food was cooked very well though. There was a bit of a draft in the restaurant and I had to keep my jacket on the whole time. Overall, would visit again.

Good with a homely feel. The food was really good with a generous helping at such an affordable price. The server was very attentive and came back to check several times how I was enjoying the food. Had the loaded omelette. Nothing fancy but I was say it’s a little gem to discover for a good brunch. Would recommend and be back for more items on the menu.

I have been here for breakfast and lunch. Delicious both times. Not greasy. Generous portions. Quick friendly service. Highly recommend this local eatery. And they have breakfast poutine!

First time having brunch here and this place is truly a hidden gem! Also got to try the wonton soup and it is super authentic! Amazing service as well. Very friendly owners.

Family run little gem offering large portions of excellent food at very reasonable prices and attentive friendly service. Small sidewalk patio is a great place to enjoy some Calgary sunshine. Wish I had discovered it earlier!

Really tasty! Very home feeling!
Cafe Addict
Had the eggs Benedict with hash browns & coffee on a Tuesday morning. Both were just ok, simple but nothing to write home about. Egg was cooked really well. Service was prompt and polite. Atmosphere is pretty basic, and it’s fairly small inside (under 10 tables).

This is a cute little local restaurant. They serve good sized portions of homey breakfast staples at a very reasonable price. Service is good too.
Steve Glazier
Great strait forward food and quick friendly service at a great price make for a great neihbourhood joint. Have never had a bad visit. Eggs benny is terrific.
Jamie Lekivetz
Great service and great food for the price!! Moved from the area and we still drive down to come here. Highly recommend the breakfast poutine!

Love this place. It's our neighbourhood goto. The staff (owners I'm assuming) are always super friendly, and love the food. We try to go every weekend, and just has a homey, comfortable feel about the place. Would definitely recommend.

It was a sunny Sunday morning and my Urbanspoon app pointed me in the direction of John’s as we were looking for a quick breakfast in the NW. The menu items are all very reasonably priced, with the specials being around $8 for a loaded omelet (which my guest ordered) while I opted for the Eggs Benedict. Note it is often packed, and the restaurant itself has limited seating. It is ideal to visit in the summer when the patio is open! Nothing super fancy about their breakfast, but it hits the spot on a lazy Sunday and its convenient location makes it easy to meet up with friends.

This is a tiny yellow building on 4th street and is easy to miss, but good food here. The food taste good and is a homely feeling. There isn't anything too special on their menu that you can't make at home yourself. If you're looking for a casual brunch place with decent price and not a long wait, this is the place to go!
The Davo
Great food, excellent service, reasonable prices. Very straight ahead food here, no fusion whatever but very good and big portions. Excellent service when I was there and prices that were quite reasonable. The interior is a little tired but then I wasn't there for the scenery.
Jenna LeBlanc
Nice little hole in the wall breakfast joint. The atmosphere is nothing to write home about, but it's great for a cheap all-day breakfast when you're hungover. Not open Sunday's, unfortunately.
Bob J
I love 80% of the menu at this place!!!! Good food at great prices. Breakfast here is great, same with their sandwiches. Small and cute establishment.
Kaylabmedley
Nothing special, but a cute little place to drop in for a simple breakfast or lunch. That is, when it's open! We've gone by this place countless mornings to see that it's closed. Glad we finally got to try it though! Food was decent, again nothing special, but you do get a lot of it for the price. I'd go back for sure.

Very friendly and fast services. If you want a quick cheap meal this is the place to go. Nothing to fancy. Just a good breakfast.

Yummy Breakie!. Read the positive reviews and we wanted to try a new place. Terrific! A cozy family owned restaurant. Excellent service.
Large portions. We enjoyed the French Toast and Bacon, Mushroom, Cheese omelette. Tasty sausages. Thumbs up!

Great bang for your buck!. I went to John's on Victoria Day for brunch with some friends. As my friends said, it definitely is a mom and pop kind of place with a small town feel. I didn't find service slow or lacking. The restaurant had a steady flow of customers, but wasn't full. I opted for the French Toast, which at $10 was a steal for the amount of food I got. 3 thick slices of french toast, hashbrowns and 3 breakfast sausages with butter and syrup on the side. The hashbrowns were the low point of the dish and were pretty bland, but nothing a liberal sprinkling of pepper couldn't help fix. The french toast was great with icing sugar and plenty of syrup on top. The sausages were your usual breakfast sausage, but I was definitely not expecting 3 and I liked that they had been cut in half. I somehow managed to finish my food! My friends all enjoyed their choices. They had an eggs benny, which came with a pool of hollandaise sauce, the breakfast special, which is probably your best bang for your buck breakfast choice and an omlette that was loaded with fillings. Overall a great experience and a great place to go for some cheap good homemade feeling kind of food.

Excellent hash browns. I think the hash browns are fantastic. They are homemade, taste delicious and not greasy. Besides the veggie omelette has lots of vegetables inside, not overcooked and quite healthy. The price is just unbelievable for that kind of serving size.

Great Food & Service. I love going to John's! Food and service is never disappointing!

Best breakfast ever!. I decided to try this place out, went in and ordered the loaded cheeseburger, it was freakin delicious! It's interesting because it says it's breakfast and lunch but they also have some vietnamese dishes as well, ill be back to try the springroll noodles, and the wor wonton! The service was friendly and pretty fast.
Brent Kirschner
Sloooooooooowwwwwwww service. Very..very...I mean very slow service. We ordered an omelette dish and a 2 egg breakfast. It took over 30 minutes for our food to come out. The food itself was okay but you could see the frustration of all the customers waiting for there food.We sat outside and the decor needs some serious upgrading as they keep covering the tables with plastic table cloths over the old ones.
Slappy McBabyeater
They might have messed up my breakfast but they went to great lengths to make it right. I will definitely be back!

Quaint breakfast. Service was super fast and friendly! Menu could have used a tad more variety. Pleasant and quite reasonably priced! Quality was very good as well
Spiderwoman
Average food, friendly service. The omelettes had no taste to them, same applies to the french toast, tasteless and dry in the centre. Milkshakes were good, overall food is average, wouldn't really recommend it. But staff is friendly and the service was fast unlike what other reviews said.
Laura Rhodes
Love this place. It's our go to place for breakfast. The staff are always friendly. The food is always great. I usually order breakfast but occasionally have their wor wonton adding noodles. Yum!

Good People, Alright food. Traveling from California we had pretty high hopes for the hole in the wall called johns breakfast. The parking was horrific, as expected, but the restaurant next to it had a whole parking structure that it had bought out for its costumers. hmmmm...why not johns???

Nonetheless the food was alright. the way that it was described seemed to be better than how it came out. Now we aren't just picky americans we have eaten all over the world but I can honestly say that this place has the WORST potatoes that I have ever eaten. The omelet that I had was alright and not to mention that coming in from out of town the food was a big overpriced for the quality and the serving amount.

It was okay, but totally not a place that I would recommend to somebody that wanted to know where the best breakfast in Calgary is.
Ricosuave
Our go-to breakfast place. Good food, good prices, especially compared to other breakfast joints in this town

my only complaint is that they dont open until 9 am. 7:30 or 8 would be much better on weekends, since we are early risers

Been many times will go back for many more!

Watch your server carefully!. I thought I was going to like this place and come back, but I was wrong. I love traditional breakfasts, I go to Denny's all the time for the Grand Slam, and I was going to order smth similar at this restaurant, which I did. The food was ok, not great, but what stands out for me is the server's actions. She has long, long hair, and when she moved a patron's plate of food to the inside of the restaurant bcz of a pesky wasp on the patio, I watched while her long hair literally dragged into the food as she leaned over and picked up the plates. She didn't even notice! wtf?!! And then the patron ate the food. Yuk!

I've had long hair in my lifetime, for years, and I sure as hell would notice if my hair was in my food as I was carrying it! This is the only thing that stands out after my visit of a few months ago, and I've finally gotten around to warning about this. And I did make conversation with this waitress so I know for a fact that she's been working there for at least a couple of years. I think she's prob part of the family of the owners....

Anyway, she should know better, hopefully she sees this and smartens up!

This was a very nice quiet place. It picked up as we were leaving. Lady asked what we wanted to drink right away and we recived it shortly after. I had the two eggs bacon and hashbrowns. The hashbrowns were way awesome on flava. My friend had the ham omelette and he said it was very nice and cheesy and loads-o-ham though the ham it self left something to be desired.
MeAndMy3
Nicely Done. Great start to the day with bright sunshine, good coffee & excellent omelette that was generously loaded with fresh fillings & served piping hot. The servers were very welcoming, friendly & efficient. Never missed an opportunity to smile or refill the coffee cup. The price point is very affordable. Coffee & omelettes for 2 were about $20 before tip/tax.

Bad service, Mediocre food. I finally got a chance to come here seeing the good reviews, but ended up really disappointed. First, the service was very slow - the 2 waitresses seemed very uncoordinated and both assumed one or the other have already taken our order after a very long wait after being seated. I saw 1 man simply walked out because the coffee he ordered didn't come after quite a while; a mother with her daughter also up and left after paying for their Snapple lemonade after the long wait for their food and bad service. It took me 10 mins to get my juice which was bottled and was in the fridge and it wasn't even busy! Second, the food is mediocre, I simply don't understand what the entire hype is - Pancake I ordered was actually burnt and dried it was tough to cut. Omelette fillings were all focused in the center the side was simply egg and when you got to the center your entire omelette would fall apart. I would have to choose disappointingly my local pub brunch over this place or simply buy groceries and make my own omelette. Be warned that the service is slow and bad, food is mediocre if not average.

Great little neighborhood diner joint with friendly service. Recommended for a great no-frills meal.

Best kept secret in town. By far the BEST little hole in the wall in Calgary.......
I've been going there fo years and I've never been disapointed.....great service, fantastic food, servings are not for small appetites...but on a Saturday or Sunday be early or be prepared to wait in line cause it fills up real fast....Just talking about it makes me want to head out there immediately......definately a "must experience" at least once...but if you do you'll be back time and again.

Comfort Breakfast. For a casual, quiet breakfast in Calgary, John's on 4th St. North is a great option for some simple and affordable. Most dishes were just under the $10 range.

As far as breakfasts go, the food we got was satisfying. Kind of what you`d get out of your home kitchen - Comfort breakfasts of eggs and pancakes. The pancakes were a decent fluffiness, enjoyable slices of grilled ham, and the omelette was packed with veggies - both filling and hit the spot.

The atmosphere was a little tight in the restaurant, but not so busy to overwhelm you. There`s also a patio which is nice on summer days. The service was also relatively quick. So as a breakfast stop in north Calgary, if you`re looking for something simple and filling at an affordable cost, John`s might be a great place for you.

Worst restaurant ever!. The food was mediocre, and the service was the worse that I have ever received. It took forever just to get drinks, then they lost our order (we later saw that they are hap hazardously thrown by the till) and it took about an hour and a half to get our food. If you don't order coffee don't expect to get your drink refilled.
Over all I would never go back, and caution those thinking of going.

Breakfast Blues :(. It was a sunny Sunday morning and my Urbanspoon app pointed me in the direction of John's as we were looking for a quick breakfast in the NW. We arrived and were fortunate to get patio seating right away....or so we thought. We quickly ordered, the menu items are all very reasonably priced, with the specials being around $8 for a loaded omelet (which my guest ordered) while I opted for the Eggs Benedict (~$9). We waited, then waited some more and had almost reached our 50min breaking point to walk away, when our food FINALLY showed up. Maybe it would have been understandable if the servers actually acknowledged us during our wait time, but seriously though, we ordered EGGS! And the special nonetheless! I likely could have pulled off grocery shopping plus made my own eggs in the same time period (note this is hypothetical seeing as I was extremely lazy that day). The food itself, was ok but unfortunately not worth the 50 minute wait.

The breakfast food we had here was absolutely terrible. Despite hearing good things, the food was terrible. I had french toast and it tasted like cardboard. It was a very disappointing experience.
Trustmeonthisone
Great little place! Family run, with good service and delicious breakfast. Surprisingly large menu for the pricepoint, too.

Amazing Food, Service, and Price!. I walked into John's with a buddy a couple weekends ago and was astounded by the line-up. As we were about to leave, due to the wait, a couple told us that the wait was very well worth it. After less than 10 minutes we were seated.
Their Chorizo Omelette ($8.50), which came with toast and home-made hashbrowns, was the best omellete I've ever had. The spice of the chorizo sausage, mixed with the tang of the cheese, tomatoes, and other delicious fillings, made the perfect start to my day. As for their home-made hashbrowns, crisp but tender and perfectly seasoned, Im still craving it like crazy!
As an added bonus, the servers were very friendly (and easy on the eyes).
Went for lunch the other day and tried their clubhouse, it was very good, but I'd definitely recommend their breakfast items.

Breakfast is Good. I've tried out John's Breakfast & Lunch twice now, liked the food both times. I got bacon & eggs both times, "how could anyone possibly screw up bacon & eggs?" you might ask, plenty of restaurants do! but not John's. I'll be back for more, I'm always happy to find a new breakfast spot, John's isn't fancy but it is tasty. What more could a girl want?

Don. Great little place, very good food, great service and will certainly go back agin and again and again.

Talk about false advertising. A handmade sign on the wall at John’s Breakfast & Lunch warns there will be a bit of a wait for the small kitchen to prepare ordered meals. But I’ve hardly had time to digest this news when my veggie eggs Benedict arrives. Admittedly, it’s a weekday mid-morning, and there are just a handful of regulars, including a couple of uniformed cops, in attendance. Still, I didn’t realize perfectly cooked poached eggs could be produced so fast.

The meals come out a little slow, but it looks like a family owned and ran restaurant – which they’re doing an amazing job! The food was quite good, no better or worse, but it was a fun environment. We had fun and we left happy and satisfied. What more do you need/want!?
