Review Sunterra Market, Keynote - Calgary

Disappointing service at the second floor restaurant at this location. There was barely any customers and the food still took a very long time, eventhough some of it was already pre-made. The staff wasn’t friendly and barely looked up during the order. The outdoor patio is the best aspect of the restaurant.

Very clean and organized store. They have lots of variety and their bakery items are delicious. We got a red velvet cake. It was very tasty and the cream cheese icing is not too sweet. Cake is also very moist.

It was my first time visiting Sunterra to pick up food for my travels. I ended up buying a chicken salad sandwich, or what I thought was a chicken salad sandwich. I basically paid $8 for 4 slices of bread, some lettuce, and maybe a scoop of chicken.

I recently bought a mango mousse cake from them and its so good. Its not that sweet and my kids love it!

While they have some good specialty items, it’s a horriblly set out supermarket and is generally very difficult to navigate and find exactly what you want (if they even have it). The pre made sandwiches are poor quality and overpriced for what they are. The best compliment I can give this store is they have good quality red meat, but I still end up having to go to at least one other grocery store to do a weeks shopping.

I had a very disappointing experience with ordering from the Catering department. I ordered a large order for a special celebration for our company 2 days in advance of the date. I had confirmation the order would arrive at 11:45 am the day of our celebration. The food did not arrive at the expected time. I called to confirm about 20 mins later and they said that dispatch was behind and they would call me back right away with update. I waited another 35 min and called back again to talk to someone else who told me they had called all the clients to let them know there was a back up. I made the call, they did not. By this time it was over an hour after expected delivery time and out of town staff had to leave to the airport. We called the store directly and were hung up on twice. After 1.5 hours we made alternative arrangements for food and had to eat at 2:30 pm. Will not be ordering thru catering again nor will anyone in our office. We cancelled the order and received no apology.

Wow, never knew this place existed. Definitely a hidden gem. Decent prices, friendly staff, great atmosphere, very clean store, well stocked and thousands of different types of foods/ products to choose from. If you live downtown, its very convenient and highly recommended to shop here. Great experience overall. If im in the area, will definitely be returning. Thank you.

Anytime I buy any of the pre-made items such as the bakery items, or the pizzas, etc they are always awful!! The pizza was so bad it was offensive. I bought a ginger cookie today and it tastes like no ginger or sugar was used and the steaks are cut way too thin. I used to live by the Sunterra in sirocco and the food was significantly better. The general groceries are fine at this location but something needs to be done about the pre-made meals, they are just, so bad. The pizza was so bad it was laughable, how do they screw up a pizza? It was like a child made it.

This company seems to avoid hiring white people. It is illegal to discriminate on race, last time I checked. Slow service and food was cold last time I went for lunch at Vic park. Good to have a new Kensington location but again, service at this new market is also poor.

What they have on their menu is not what they make daily. I've come there 4 times to have their Artichoke & Chicken and they don't have it. I ask what days of the week they have it, none of the staff can answer me.

Great and very reasonably priced meals on the third floor. We came for breakfast (ends at 11am) on a weekday and there was plenty of seating. I decided on a crepe and R had the breakfast bowl. The portions were huge and each dish was less than $9. You also have a large selection of drinks to choose from.

I absolutely love Sunterra's deli for a quick, filling meal or snack. The clerks are a little bit curt, but the food makes up for it. I usually get the chili tofu which is my favourite item, as well as either a salad or the roasted root vegetables. I find most of the deli items to be heavily dressed and try to avoid those as I prefer the fresh taste of the ingredients. The atmosphere is calming and I never feel rushed. The upstairs eating area is comfortable and bright.
Overall, an amazing place with options for all types of dietary restrictions.

Sunterra only understands one flavor: salt. If it weren't for the pounds of salt they pack in each dish, the dishes would be completely bland. I am not normally averse to salt, except for the ridiculous quantities that Sunterra uses.

Really like this place! Great for casual meetings and conversations. The view is great and it's very modernly designed. Unique selection of beverages and very friendly staff. Huge selection of groceries, prepared meals and desserts on the bottom floor.

I love this place. Always have a great experience stopping in here for a sandwich or one of their pre-made items from the deli. The BBQ chicken wrap and a small tray of mixed vegetables are my go-to (forgot to pack a lunch) lunch favourite.

They have a bakery, a salad bar, and a restaurant. So much variety. There is something for everyone. I love whole foods and this is about as close to that as you can get in Calgary.
Carnivore
The lunch specials are good and reasonably priced, this is a bit of a change from the grocery store which I find overpriced but convenient. The lunch paninis are usually ready to go and only 7 bucks.
Neltron
Very convenient location and there if you did not pack a lunch. Part grocery store/bakery/ restautant/deli everything all rolled into one. They have a make your own salad bar, can order from the deli where they can heat up the food for you. Hot meals right off the stove. The paninis are really good. Need to grab something for dinner? Just come pick up what you need before you head home or get a mid afternoon coffee and dessert. Come check it out!

Sunterra is a great place to pick up something tasty and affordable and decently fast for lunch or dinner. I haven't tried their Market Bar so this review is about their 'fast' section. I've ordered their asiago burger many times and it is a great price for a real burger (with asiago cheese and bacon) and a choice of side dish for about $8.50.

Sunterra offers a fresh market of delicious wholesome food, and the keynote location is no exception. The developers have a created an eatery here that highlights the design element of the dining experience, emphasizing the use of natural lighting and wooden furnishings. One of my go-to's for Sunterra is the chicken pesto panini. Each bite offers a crisp piece of toasted focaccia along with a generous amount of tender chicken, finished with a savoury pesto sauce that carries the balance of the overall sandwich. Definitely a great place to grab a quick bite to go, or spend the lunch hour with others!

Went to Market Bar last week for drinks and dinner before a show. Definitely a cool place, nice vibe. I liked the TVs and the pizza oven (looked gas). When we arrived we sat at the bar and were greeted promptly by the bartender. He listed off some specials, and we both had the 5$ Stella - great deal! We looked over the menu, decided on 2 of the pizzas to share, but they were out of one of them. Changed to the Smoked salmon pizza & maple habanero ribs. They were both so dissapointing. The pizza crust was so dry, it was like eating a cracker. And there was so little toppings on it. No sauce, 3 or 4 pieces of cheese and 2 pieces of smoked salmon. It didn't taste good AND was a rip off. The ribs were obviously re-heated, and weren't even heated through. When you put habanero on the menu, I expect some spice. There was nothing. It tasted like a peach/apricot based bbq sauce, overly sweet, with no heat. When the bartender asked how everything was, I expressed by displeasure but he just walked away. Brought the bill, we paid and left. Service was quick, prices were reasonable, but if the food sucks and the servers don't care, I won't be returning.

Who doesn’t like breakfast food, and some days you don’t want to make breakfast at home. Diners & other popular breakfast places are usually really busy on a weekend. This is when Marketbar by Sunterra comes in. I was not aware that the Sunterra Keynote had this. My girlfriend suggested this place & it was like finding a hidden gem (maybe it was just us). It has a big sitting area and very fancy inside. When you walk in you see the bar to your right & a dining room setting to the left. As you go further in, it gets brighter and more of a cafe setting (self seating on both sides). They also have an outdoor patio, which we couldn’t experience as it was gloomy and windy. The service was quick & efficient. Order, pay, receive a table number for your order which they will bring out to you.
Picky City
Probably one of the most disappointing sunterra experiences I've had, that meaning I've had more than one bad experience. I could go on and on about the inconsistencies, lack of quality and deception that Sunterra Market never fails to offer.

In the year 2010 they advertised their infamous yogurt cups as having fresh fruit, despite the fact that they were and are currently using frozen fruit in all yogurt cups. The trick? The fruit dethaws by the time an unaware customer decides to purchase it. This is straight up propaganda at its finest.

Every single thing you buy in the deli is made days in advance. If you think that $10.00 precooked bbq chicken breast is going to taste delicious and fresh, then you have no idea what delicious and fresh is.

So what is fresh at Sunterra? Technically everything, they just don't serve everything to you fresh that day. It's a marketing ploy that many are unaware of and unfortunately when employed by sunterra market in 2009, I was subject to many situations where clientele questioned the freshness of sunterra's product and I was basically told to flat out lie. For example when a woman approaches the deli and asks if it was fresh made today, I was informed to always tell her yes (even if the product I'd be selling her was made 4 days ago). So what's the catch? They make everything fresh daily but they serve it at a later date. So although everything in the deli was being made fresh daily, the product being sold was not the fresh product made on that day. Following me?

Anyways let's talk about my disatisfying experience I encountered today after buying a few groceries and eating in the market bar upstairs (which was nothing spectacular... I had the turkey dinner tonight and parts of my turkey were pink). I thought it would be nice to treat myself to something from the bakery. I saw a lovely looking dessert with a cream of some sort (possibly a mousse) sitting behind the glass in a chocolate cup. I asked the girl working what was inside the chocolate cup, and she said it was whip cream. I mean clearly it was not whip cream, it was a coffee color and there's no way a bakery would use perfectly good chocolate cups and fill it with only whipping cream. I was a little taken back. And then a gentlemen beside me asked the same woman "I'm trying to lose weight is there anything in here that would be good for me to have?" And she said "you can have anything in here, it's all ok" and he replied "no way all these are ok, you're lying to me" and then walked away with his wife. 2 sales lost in 1 minute of her time.

A couple minutes later I was able to find the manager, or supervisor (I'm unsure of his rank) however he was a short bald man (wearing more business attire ie: white collar shirt and tie) who when asked to speak with a supervisor, took it upon himself to help. I never got his name so i can only assume he was a superior.

When I explained what had happened, he basically acted like he didn't care. I'm telling him about how his staff behind the bakery are unknowledgeable and he tells me "well they aren't trained in knowing weight loss products" and I said "they clearly aren't trained in any of the products you have for sale". Either way, I pointed out the dessert to him and he told me it was a tiramisu mousse, further proving the fact that his staff lacks knowledge in product, and he just still didn't care.

First of all, if I am running an establishment that deals with food, I'm going to want my staff to know about what they are selling, and if not, I'd hope there would be tools available for these employees to know what they are selling (a sign for example in the front of the case distinguishing what dessert it was would've been perfect). If staff are really lying to customers about what's in a product it could result in serious problems. For example, let's say I bought the chocolate cup with what she told me was whip cream, took it home and ate it and died from an allergic reaction all because I thought it was just whip cream when in fact is was a tiramisu mousse the whole time?

But let's face it, the real icing on the cake is the fact that the manager of keynote sunterra straight up didn't care at all about the lack of knowledge his staff has, he wasn't apologetic for the treatment I received, and above all his lack of care for serious potential liabilities is outrageous. He is putting Sunterra Market at a serious risk by not hiring thorough and competent staff, but overall it reflects more about him and his lack of care for his career.

Hopefully next time we will be able to sit on the patio.

Check out my blog for full review & pictures

Disgusting. Worst of the worst. No service whatsoever; everybody on staff seems to have a break and the served food was way over priced. They have a very bad reputation how the Price family treat their staff. Esspecially in Trochu. Thank God they are unionized now for the workers.

Social kitchen. I bought a couple seats at the social kitchen as a Valentine's gift for my boyfriend. It was a great experience.
Unfortunately the other couples were rather shy and the majority of the table was a large group so we didn't get to be too social but we will admit the food made up for it.
The chef Richard was very prepared and very knowledgeable. We did a Mediterranean dinner of couscous, kabobs, roast veg, soup, pastry and baklava. The chef not only was agile in the kitchen moving from station to station helping people but he was also very knowledgable of the products. He replaced the pastry dough with puff pastry due to a bad batch which was a great success. He even served!

This is where my problem starts. There was a server who was very inattentive. When we arrived she said something about drinks that wasn't clear but I did request a glass of wine which she forgot but luckily she listened to my boyfriend who requested one for me. But she appeared only serve select few because my glass was never offered a refill and he was offered several. As I said the chef served. Richard was social and smart and we didn't mind this but the guy obviously works hard and should not be on serving duty and music duty as well as teaching us.
When it came to paying we had to stay an extra half hour because the server dealt with the large group before us and let them split the bill. This was annoying because I overate and was feeling ill. And lastly she had the audacity to tell me I should have tipped. I would gladly tip the chef by slipping him a ten but she was neither nice nor professional. And it was a class. We cooked for ourselves and I understand there was still a service of sorts but I don't tip my yoga instructor or my university professor. At $50 a plate and drinks extra I feel they got properly compensated for the two hours we were there.
Food Sensitive
Patio umbrella disaster. I went to eat on the patio of the MarketBar during the summer of 2013. I chose a table with the umbrella already open. A gust of wind turned my table over, spilling coffee and red pasta sauce on me and my handbag. There were some helpful customers nearby, but none of the staff came out to help me (hold the table down or clean up). Also, the staff did not offer me a coffee replacement because my coffee cup was still full before it toppled over. Thankfully, a customer brought me a wet cloth. I was out there for an ample amount of time wiping the front and back of my pants, handbag, and cake container, and even some of the table and chair. I had maxed out that cloth, and I then noticed my white shirt was also stained and had to go inside to ask for another cloth, and then go to the washroom to wet it because the dry one he gave me was doing nothing for it. I was so distraught that I forgot another errand I had planned to do afterward. I had been waiting so long to be in the area to do this errand, so I was even more annoyed.

I'm surprised that this could happen at such a nice looking place. However, my friend, who’s been there multiple times was not surprised. Their tables seem too lightweight to be held down with wind on the open umbrellas. I doubt this is the first time that it’s happened because a staff member did not seem phased when I courteously informed him about the mess out there. (He just said not to worry because it’ll be cleaned up eventually. I was flabbergasted because it was a disaster zone around that table because the full cup of coffee had spread out more than imaginable over the table and floor, not to mention the pasta that also spilled.) Shortly after, I e-mailed Sunterra about it in case they wanted to make it right before posting a review about it, but I never got a response.

When I went there in probably 2017, they charged me more than the price on the board for pasta. The staff member told me that the price had changed a long time ago.

I went upstairs to the full service lounge- awesome service, decent food, tho the menu is kinda basic, unreal wine list. I didn't even know this place existed. Prices are very inexpensive-especially for downtown Calgary. 2 entrees, 2 glasses of wine and a pint for $40. Seriously. I will be back!

Neat Selections. Really enjoyed the food selections in the restaurant and market area. Loved the salad bar and foods to go. Also, the bakery- especially the cakes and pies. The prices are not bad for entire cakes. Where places with not so great cakes could charge more.
I really liked the food and array of desserts and coffee in the restaurant area. The food was light but filling- I had their tacos and my friend had their pizza. I did not leave with a heavy feeling. I like the quality of their food each time there.
The only negative thing is the service. People working there were friendly, but the process of ordering was confusing. It was my first time there. Didn't know where to stand to order and had to look for the sign. The menu was in two different places.
The guy taking my order was not paying attention to my order. I was placing an order for my friend and myself. He assumed I was cancelling my order when I started to order for my friend. The guy then was making food for me that I did not even mention.
My friend and I thought: "they must be starting out that is why they are not organized in the restaurant...". By the looks of it, this area was a bit of a problem for a couple of years by the looks of past reviews.
Still would go for the food. The food, concept and building itself was marvelous.

I've eaten at this location once or twice a week for the past year and a half.

The salad bar is just so convenient that, damn the price, I keep coming back. I've been doing the keto diet for a long time, so it's an excellent place to get your fats and proteins as well as your allotted 20g of carbs in leafy green vegetables. I've also eaten their baguettes (which are really good), their squares, which are as good as mom makes them. They make a lemon coconut square that I really like and I feel like is very good value. Their canoli is also very good; as is their meatballs in the deli department.

When you are in the checkout line you also get to watch hipsters pay a premium for buying groceries from their hella expensive grocery store. It's a lot of fun.

Why I keep coming back to Sunterra:

Their Salad bar is convenient (but expensive)
Their dessert selection is REALLY good (and more reasonably priced)
It's the only place near work where I could manage my macros

What a GEM!. Found this place due to hubby"s work and have been hooked since. I am a foodie and love passion in food. This place hits it in spades both in the restaurant and in the marketplace below. It is above average, heathy and scratch made which is very rare in this city! Market produce and meats and seafood are very above average especially in the long winter months when everything tastes flat. If you enjoy food and want to eat well - this is the place for you.
Kimberly
This is a really odd attempt at a restaurant and a take away in one space. I do not like that you have to walk through the bar or restaurant to enter the take away section or that the restaurant is so far away from the washrooms. The food was okay but a bit over priced. Service was spotty at best. Had gift certificates or I wouldn't have gone and definitely won't be back.
Empty Tummy...
Eat from the deli, NEVER the restaurant upstairs.... Keynote deli is fine, no complaints...however the restaurant located upstairs is the biggest joke I have seen in a long time. Where did you find these servers??? Menu is microscopic and terrible, I wanted to go down to the deli, put food in a plastic container and bring something back up to the restaurant....horrible service and food upstairs in wine bar...
Naki
We've had our Xmas party here for the last little while... From a catering perspective it wasn't very good. The food was cold, not refilled very often, and the drinks (alcoholic and nonalcoholic) are pretty expensive. Dropping in for lunch is pretty decent though. Like the patio in the summer.

Reviews of cakes/bakery?. Hi - Is there anyone out there in Urbanspoon Land that could either recommend (or not!) this Market's Cakes/bakery? I am hosting a b-day party for my dad soon, and want a great tasting cake.
Thanks SO much!!

Chocolate Chip Muffin. Addictively sweet and impossible to resist!

Very modern great Atmosphere. I love the layout very Modern and the food is great also I like the fact they have an wine bar very cool. Very clean as well
I would defiantly come back again.

Hmm. I stopped in today to check out their produce selection as I've just moved close by. & it seems wonderful! Nice veggie & fruit selection! Although it's really annoying to see NOT Ripened Fruit sliced open with a for sale mark on them! :/ Papaya's are NOT ripe when they are GREEN people, c'mon. *shakes head* well not the one's they were selling.

Anyhow, they have what looks to be a LOVELY sized RAW Food Salad Bar. A cozy modern "cafe like" seating area.

I thought that perhaps with the fermented kefir yoghurt, they might carry Daiya Cheese (Vegan) products, but they do not.

I will be back, this place is cozy, homey, & clean!
Becky
Terrible. I had the misfortune of working for Sunterra at this location. I have never seen such a disorganized place, they will hire anyone with a heart beat so the staff rarely knows what is going on. It's nice as a shopping experience but the two kitchens there are absolutely terrible.
OAK4EVER
Let's see. 1.Raw cookies (more than one occasion). 2.over seasoned chicken. 3. Rotten veggies in the produce aisle. 4. Poor customer service (lady painting her nails at cash point), 5. Poor food quality. The only perk is that is conveniently located near home. PASS

Wonderful market and delicious food. Guided here by a friend who works downtown, my love began as I explored the market on the ground level. This is the only Sunterra Market that I've been to, so the whole experience was quite exciting. With so many people bustling about trying to grab a healthy bite, I immediately noticed the plethora of fresh items surrounding me. I could have easily grabbed something pre-made here and been content, but the smell of more food from the second floor kept me walking.

The restaurant on the second floor is an open concept, illuminated by sunshine through their many windows. Sauntering past the rows of food being cooked, I was immediately confused as to how one went about ordering. After asking around, I finally settled on their Garlic Clove Chicken on a bed of brown rice (other choices included white rice, spinach, and pasta). The servers were very friendly and helpful, and the portions were quite large.

When ladling the stew atop my rice, the servers make sure you get the most meat and veggies as possible. The chicken was tender, the veggies cooked to a perfect texture, and the overall flavours just perfect. My dessert was a delicious chocolate chip muffin. My whole meal was under $10, which I feel is an excellent deal.

In conclusion, my perfect world would have me living in one of the condos that towers above this market, thus giving me full access to Sunterra's food at all times. Alas, this is not yet possible, so I must therefore make as many excuses as possible to return. A myriad of healthy, fresh food choices for a truly magnificent price: I am at peace.

Market is great for lunch. Can't speak to the restaurant itself, even though the smells are lovely. I use this place for healthy quick lunch carryout and it definitely fills that bill. Salad bar is fresh and stocked, many sandwich choices, lots of fruit. Quick in and out is what I need and the fact that there are NUTRIENTS in my food here... total bonus. :)

In a word: average. I agree with James' review regarding the second floor restaurant - quite disorganized. As well, they over salt everything, often to the point of making the sides inedible. Service, although slow on occasion, is typically with enthusiasm. Two small things that bug me every time I visit are, 1) the employees smoking en masse right outside the parking entrance; 2) watching the employees eating the samples while working. Overall, very convenient and good more often than not. Hoping they continue to improve with time.

GREAT food but takes navigating. Love the concept the second floor is really comfortable and a great deck. The are also open early you can show up at 6:00 am get fed a very good quality breakfast for a reasonable price and on the road by 7:00 am But watch the parking - confusing the main floor is small but seems to have everything I want in it If I lived in a Condo I would pay an extra $50,000 to have a place like this on the main floor makes living easy. Lunch and dinner are again good quality and "the price is right" I find the big pan selections healthy and well received and you can get them on spinach not just rice. Great place for family and kids open kitchen concept with an emphasis on healthy that allows the kids to get what they want but still have something healthy. Service is amazing - they have some sort of a no tip policy I do not understand but what I can tell you is everyone makes an effort to please. Well worth visiting.
James
Not quite as efficient as the other Sunterras. I've stopped by the new Sunterra restaurant three times since it has opened, since it is close to home and fairly convenient. The food is fresh and quite good, but the ordering process is quite convoluted, even for the staff. Trying to get your order can be quite cumbersome, since those that are supposed to take your order don't pay much attention to the customers. Overall, I find that they take about twice as much time as the other Sunterras to make your food. I will be avoiding the restaurant for now and just stick with the market downstairs. Hopefully, they will eventually sort out their logistical issues in the restaurant.

Sunterra is a rare Alberta company that’s vertically integrated.

Now that Sunterra is just around the corner, there’s a closer place to pick up everyday goodies; and a hangout where you can eat and enjoy the food we all love. On the top floor, there is a self-serve cafeteria-style, but they have also included the two large tandoori/woks for the curries and asian/thai dishes.

I absolutely love Sunterra Market. If you are in the area and are looking for some of the best, most affordable food around at any time of day, check out Sunterra Market!
The other bowl of pasta that we ordered would be the Parmesan Chicken and it’s a rich white creamy and cheesy sauce. If you don’t like the smell of Parmesan, you probably won’t like this one! Both bowls of pasta was enormous – which I couldn’t finish. Chunks of meat throughout the sauce, and enough sauce without drowning the pasta! So, overall, I really like this place! The prices are very reasonable, the portions are huge and the food is excellent! I will be back for dessert one day!

White Chocolate Chunks and Dark Chocolate Chips. Addictively sweet and impossible to resist! I kept it in my purse for spontaneous snacking, but that didn't last long :)
