Great food and great service! So glad we found this place!
Beautiful restaurant and delicious food, made by stellar sushi chefs. The sushi and cooked food were delicious. I'm a fan of the beef sashimi, spicy prawns, and sashimi. I want to try the sukiyaki in my next visit.
Delicioso. Ótimo atendimento. O sukiyaki é divino. Preço muito justo.
Great place
Great service and the food is fantastic

Best Sushi we have had in a long time. Great service!
Hot diggity damn! Sukiyaki House reopened for pick up and delivery! When I saw FoodKarma’s post on her recent pandemic meal, I knew I had to order the exact same thing. That way, I could bum off her husband’s photos. For this post, let’s listen to “Mad World” by Gary Jules.
Finally, something to compare to Sushi Klub Kensington. Don’t get me wrong Zipang is pretty good but this blows it out of the water. The quality of fish is amazing and their specials are top notch. Anything with the sweet crab when it’s in season is ridiculous. I’ve taken so many clients here; no bad reviews yet.
It was at the original downstairs Sukiyaki House that we first experienced sushi with Chef Soji back in the eighties. He was an interesting man who set us on the path to appreciating Japanese food. Thirty years later we finally checked out the new place and were impressed. We enjoyed great service, excellent sushi, sashimi and gyoza. A stand out was the Tuna Gomae. Very tasty. Sukiyaki House also has a wide variety of great sakes. We recommend this place to anyone interested in Japanese food. Its also a nice place to meet friends or family for a leisurely meal. Oyshee!
The best tasting and highest quality sushi that I have had so far in my life.
The service is fantastic- always prompt and with the perfect wine/sushi suggestions.
The food is awesome- very fresh, flavorful, and quick.
The atmosphere is perfect- ultra clean, really good music, and a great location. They have limited free parking next door, but I usually walk or Car2go.
For the above reasons I view Sukiyaki as high value and priced somewhat lower than I would expect.
Fine sushi dining! This restaurant is a tad pricey but extremely impressive. The classy modern-Japanese decor is perfect for a lunch meeting or a date night. The staff is wonderfully friendly and prompt. Most importantly though, the sushi is just as delicious as it is visually pleasing! 👌🏻😊🙌🏻
Make sure you make reservations since it's get busy for lunch. Their rolls are good and the spicy prawns are my fav and a must have. A bit pricey for sushi also but the restaurant is clean and service is great.
The quality of food of this place is always consistently fresh. I am always impressed with the seasonal exclusive selection items you may not be able to find at other places. Lunch hour is always a busy one here and the servers are very attentive to the customers making it one of my favourite lunch spots.
Great Service!!!. I've been to Sukiyaki House twice, and both times have been lovely - however, it was the last experience really resonated with me! My boyfriend was celebrating his birthday, and it fell to me to make the dinner reservations - a simple enough task, I suppose, but the number of attendees kept changing! The server I talked to on the phone was so accommodating with my questions about the menu and constant calls back, and certainly didn't disappoint when we arrived, either. A highlight was when our server diligently explained the concept of hot pot to us - no easy task, with the vociferous 12 of us at the table - and was even kind enough to offer a sake bomb to the birthday boy on the house! I'm sure that we kept them past closing - not our intention, of course, but I suppose 25th birthdays only happen once! Still, I found that the staff was very patient with us, and never got the impression that we were being rushed out.
The food was great and well worth the price, but it was the hospitality that really stayed with me. Thank you for showing us such a good time!
We went to Sukiyaki for Valentine's Day! Our table was ready when we arrived and we were promptly seated. Our waitress arrived shortly after to take our drink order and was very friendly. Everything we ordered was delicious! We ordered the spicy prawns after reading about them in meny reviews, the tuna tataki and muscles to start, all were nicely plated and yummy! My bf ordered the steak for his main and I had the spicy tuna and philly roll, everything was so fresh! Overal we had a great time and will be back for sure!
Good Good. Its a bit pricier than a lot of sushi places - but the food is so good! Every time I go I'm impressed. Worth the visit.
Top sushi in Calgary!. Everytime I go to Sukiyaki House, I know a great experience awaits. Friendly service is accompanied with exceptional sushi! This restaurant offers a wide variety of options and caters to your every need. My top favorites are the beef tataki, agedashi tofu and the spicy cajun roll! The cajun roll is a MUST HAVE! I have attempted to go to other sushi spots but find myself returning to Sukiyaki House. Hope others enjoy it as much as I do everytime.
Best sushi place ever. You would be crazy to say you don't like it. Food is tasty and servers are friendly and the place is exceptionally clean. No sticky tables or stains of any sort. Sushi rolls are of great size and good proportion of fish to rice. Rice is also really flavorful and not just flavored. The tea is also quite concentrated and not diluted like the other places. For those who like to drink hot water and is picking about the taste, you got to come here. They're hot water does not taste weird but is quite crisp, with a really clean cup. Bottom line is your would not regret it. However if u disagree with my review then you clearly don't know what good Japanese food is and you are wasting your money on low grade stuff. So stop eating Japanese food because you are lying to yourself.
Sushi club is back!. There are only two places I like to go to for sushi, sushi club and sukiyaki house. When I went to sukiyaki house last saturday I was more than happy to see Steve working right behind the bar. I was devastated when sushi club had closed, now not only do I get the freshest sushi but also those delicious chicken gyoza! I can't wait to go back!
I usually don't leave reviews on restaraunts but my girlfriend and I, on valentines night came to Sukiyaki House and we were talking about how hard we saw the servers working.
A table next to us was constantly complaing to the point that their waters were not at satisfactory temperature. As someone who never writes reviews I wanted to say that I think Sukiyaki house is a gem and we love their food. We are not regulars, but we recieved a top notch dining experience and the food is really worth the visit from out of town.
Vday Dinner!. First off, coming as an ex-server I am thoroughly familiar with the horror of working dinner service on Valentines Day so props to the servers for braving the crowd tonight and not calling in sick! Now with that said, I do not usually dine out on Valentines Day just to avoid the nightmare but this year we wanted a little Japanese treat.
I was highly impressed with the friendly accommodation by the wait staff since we didn't mention bringing in a toddler when we made the reservation. Service was genuine, friendly and we could tell they were working their butts off. The food was amazing as always! There were some periods of time where it took a little longer for a water refill but I had good company and good food and our server came over to apologize for the wait. I will definitely be back!
Good for evenings and weekends. Food is good. The ingredients are top notch. The organic miso soup nurtures your soul. No complaints on the food side.
Service is good but during lunch time on weekdays slow as molasses. Not their fault, they are making really good food and it takes time. If you are going at lunch time on a weekday make a reservation, be ready to wait and make sure your next appointment starts 15h00. The food will be delightful, though.
To really enjoy this place go for the dinner service on weekdays or wait for the weekend. Same quality, less people.
Excellent!. Best sushi in Calgary; best staff by far. My first choice always.
Fantastic Sushi/Service. I created this account specifically to review the Sukiyaki House. I wasn't sure I wanted to give it a great review as whenever we've gone it's been uncrowded and we got seats immediately. But that being said they definitely deserve a fantastic review.
I honestly don't know where the few bad reviews I've read have come from, I don't even know if it's the same restaurant they are talking about. The Sukiyaki House on 9th is fantastic, as I said it's never been busy, and surprisingly for downtown there's lots of parking close by. There's a lot directly across the street and usually an empty stall out front.
The ambience of the restaurant is great, you can tell it's very new with high ceilings, top end finishings and even great bathrooms.
The service has always been fantastic, the servers have been attentive and really quite funny and friendly. In downtown Calgary pretentiousness and a snobbish air seem to be the norm, so the servers here who are genuinely happy to help are a welcome change.
Which brings me to the food, the sushi is fantastic, I highly recommend the Volcano Roll, and Spicy Tuna Roll. But the sushi shouldn't be your only reason for going. The Miso Soup is the best I've ever had, hands down (but you have to like mushrooms) the Yam Tempura is great and comes in a huge portion, the Sake Caesar is a tasty new spin on an old Calgary tradition and the Tataki Beef: definitely a must try.
If you are looking for a great sushi place without a huge wait on a Friday night, make the trip downtown I guarantee you won't regret it.
We went here very randomly. A friend of mine is a server here and highyl recommended the food. I won't comment on service because my friend was the server and of course I'd be biased. The manager however gave us a complimentary order of tempura edemame beans which were delicious! The sushi is expensive yes but considering every roll would be a 'special' roll at other restaurants it isn't that much more. The spicy salmon was great with some spiced up tempura in the middle and little jalopeno slice on top! The philly had lime for a nice but slightly overpowering twist. The volcano was great!!! Gyoza was not my favorite as the sauce was too sweet for me. The decor is lovely! A nice upclass sushi restaurant for a date or formal dinner. Beautiful bathrooms!! Try it out if you can spare a few bucks more than the average for some truly inspired sushi.
It's ok. I used to work across fr this place and been there couple times. I 've pretty much tried all the rolls there as they don't have that many. i like how they have a quite simple menu with not too many selections b/c it makes me feel like they r more focus on what they r best at. I'm in love with their spicy salmon roll, omg the salmon literally melts in your mouth!! The rest of the rolls are fresh and tasty but not as memorable. You get good Japanese food here but since this is a high end sushi place with such a location like that, can't help but being a bit pricey.
Really like the place. Nice atmosphere, neat decor, good service, neatly presented food. One small thing, the inside of the grilled eel was burnt, therefore, left a slight bitter taste for the dragon roll... Noticeable enough tho. Will come back when I'm richer :-p
Pricey indeed. My friend and I came here for a light and early dinner. The restaurant has a modern feel to it - very simple decorations but the interior... because of all the glass windows, was brightly lit. The servers were very courteous and greeted us as we were guided to our table.
I reviewed the menu ahead of time so I knew what I wanted to order. I love chirashi and like to try it at different places, so I got that, while my friend ordered three rolls. My chirashi comes with a side salad and miso soup, so those were the first to arrive. I really liked the salad - it was so simple yet tasty. I don't know what kind of dressing it was but it tasted light and a bit sweet. My miso soup was not the salty variety... in fact, there was a sweet aftertaste after each sip. The negihama and negitoro rolls came after - I only tried a piece of the negitoro and hmmmm... creamy and fatty! My friend did like them both. My chirashi came next - beautiful array of seafood over a bed of rice. The sashimi was very fresh, but I was quite taken back by how little fish there was... this dish was NOT cheap. I've had chirashi that was half the price yet with twice the amount of seafood! The one thing that's different and I really enjoyed was the deep fried shrimp head. I've never had it before and man... it was so good! I wish all places that served amaebi would serve the head deep friend!! The kelly tempura roll came last. I didn't try this either but my friend was happy with it.
The food was pretty good here but it's definitely pricey. I'm not sure if I'd return though... Service was very attentive - no complaints there. Their menu is only one page with some pretty standard stuff so yeah... but I'm glad I did give them a try though.
Slow Service. Great food but really slow service. Case in point our appertizer arrived 15 minutes after we finished our entrees.
Friday Night Dinners - Sukiyaki House. It's that time of the week again, and off again on another culinary adventure. This week I had to spin the slot machine a few times, but my journey tonight led me to Sukiyaki House. And despite the name, that's not all they serve.
It took a moment after entry for me to be noticed by the waitress, but when seated the service recovered a little...everything was attended to in good time. The menu was precise and straight to the point, with a few interesting dishes that begged for a try. But to start, I settled for the maguro no tataki (Tuna Tataki).
The tuna was seasoned in a spicy sauce and wrapped neatly around some fresh greens. The tuna was a bit heavy on the spice, and lingered around a little longer on the palette than it should have. The fish was fresh, but some of the freshness was lost in the spiciness of the seasoning.
And again in the mood for sushi, what better way to fill it than with my favourite rolls, the tekka maki and the spider roll, with a couple pieces of toro nigiri on the side. Again, no issues with the fish (impeccable) or the rolls (neatly made). The waitress was a bit hesitant when I marked down the spider roll (since they considered it a large roll...and it was large. No wimping out here), but we finished it. And it was, simply, good.
For $56 (including drinks and tip), it was a good meal after a long week. The tataki could be toned down a little, but everything else was good. It's easy to see why this place has been in business for so many years.
Great Food - Great Atmosphere. Upscale sushi dining - wonderful presentation and menu. Amazingly fresh and creative.
Holy miso soup Batman! This was like miso soup on crack... Tons of oyster and enoki mushrooms which are the tiny, white, long stemmed variety. No wonder this bowl of soup was $5! Packed full of treats... It was almost too many mushrooms. I don't think I've ever said that- mushrooms are my favorite ever.
I wanted to try the tempura here to see how it’s made. I was very surprised by this! First off, it’s a very large portion. Second, there were nine types of vegetables in this – asparagus (2 pcs), long green beans (4 pcs), avocado, eggplant, cucumber, yellow pepper, yam sticks (2 pcs), yellow yam slice and kaboocha. Third, it was crispy, lightly fried and not the least bit oily. I also love how they give you the grated ginger and daikon to add to your tempura sauce. I would order this again in a heartbeat!
It's my grandma's birthday next week and family from near and far are coming into town to celebrate. To kick things off, we went to Sukiyaki House. I realize I've had my little spiel on this classy Japanese restaurant already but we ordered so many differ
Food was so good here. Raw fish was so fresh and tasted great. Server was very nice and fast. The place doesn’t look fancy but when you get the bill you will be hit hard. I didn’t expect it to be this expensive. Usually I pay 100$ max for me and my two kids. But today we paid $200 including tip. But it’s still more than the usual. I don’t know if it’s because of Covid or they are usually this time expensive. Am not from Calgary so I don’t know how prices are here.
Hands down, one of the best Japanese restaurants in Calgary. I went for dinner with a friend last night and we were raving about how delicious everything was.
The Agedashi Tofu melts in your mouth, the Beef Tataki was delicious and fresh, and the Tako Carpaccio was amazing. All the sushi rolls we ordered were fresh and tasted wonderful (Alberta Roll, Mango Roll and the Shake Skin Roll). It is a bit on the fancier side, so I’d probably only return for special occasions or monthly treats.
Service was great, the first waiter I had was very friendly and knowledgeable, but the second one was more quiet. Regardless, everything was perfect. Well done Sukiyaki House, you just got yourselves a new fan!
The Japanese cuisine is really amazing, I am quite sure that the chef is from Japan as I have been Japan for many many times, the food is so wonderful that beyond my expectations while I was in Calgary. I would recommend the Tempura, Chirashi and the other Sashimi courses. BTW, the staffs were all kind and attentive.
10/10 the best sushi I’ve had in Calgary. Service was incredible and everything we ordered was delicious! Would highly recommend the nigiri - unmatched quality. Will definitely be back!
First time here! Highly recommend to any sushi lovers! Definitely one of the best Japanese restaurant in town. Will be back soon!
California roll was strange. We would pass on that next time. Not really a family vibe, very quiet, better for a grown up dining group. Not many cooked foods or variety but decent selection of staples plus a few surprises. Everything they did have tasted fresh. We were given a free and beautifully plated mochi dessert. Thanks again for this! The sake menu is larger than most so fun to be able to try a new variety. Parking is not bad after the business offices close. Service was efficient and friendly. We'd come back, just maybe without the kids though.
The food was delicious. The miso soup was really special and different from the other Japanese restaurants in Calgary. Service was really good. Anna was friendly and very helpful.
