Absolutely the best orange float and mushroom burger I've had in many years! We went today and were thrilled with the food and the awesome staff super friendly and happy crew! I'll be back. Often.
We are from Oro-Medonte Ont. We are here visiting our daughter and her family. We had lunch here with our daughter and grand son the food was truly amazing great burger. We are going back today for lunch the food was that good
Best little restaurant in Calgary. Definitely a must to go through. I'm excited for the renovations to be done. Hopefully it will meet the vision that they've had for ages.
Authentic little restaurant with the most amazing staff. Never I've seen a place where the owner is interacting with the customers. He even played with and made my son laughed.
Ordered bacon, and eggs special as I wasn't overly hungry. I didn't expect anything too special for $8.50. I was pleasently surprised, it was awesome :)
Thanks Angels, My wife had the best Birthday party ever!! Thanks for saving the table for us..
Friendly staff, cool 50's retro decor, great food. Good prices, too.
Still a great little hidden gem. Food is always good and the shakes well get outta here. Sad that it is so far away from me but anytime I'm in the neighbor hood I gotta stop in.
Excellent food, great portions, really nice people.
Service was nice. Deep fried mac and cheese were the bomb. My friend got the hot roast beef sandwich and I got the hot turkey sandwich. The fries were delicious. Not the crinkle cut type they used to serve. I didn't touch the vegetables because they looked like they were just the bagged Frozen kind and my turkey tasted quite processed so I didn't enjoy it so much but my friend's hot roast beef was really good. Prices are real good. $10 for Hot turkey meal. $3 for 3 fried mac n cheese. Burgers are $6
Visited for the first time today. Food is good but we found that for the price the quantity of food was lacking what we would expect from a diner type restaurant.
Unfortunately we didn't realize that they are undergoing construction at the moment, so we couldn't eat inside. I had wanted to see the Retro theme. The drive through was open so we did that, and I have to say I was very impressed with the food. My partner had a turkey wrap and I had a chicken burger. We shared a spicy curly fries (not spicy at all but still good) and onion rings. The onion rings were fantastic, some of the best that I have tried. Perfect crunch and didn't need any salt. Everything had a good portions, and it was all a decent price. If you are craving low key drive in food, definitely check this place out. I will return for sure, and I hope it's open by then so I can get the full Retro Diner experience.
I've lived in the area for over 30 years and can't believe I've never written a review of my favourite drive-in. Amazing food and great service. If you're expecting fast food, then go elsewhere. They take your order, make your food and bring it out to your table. I love all the burgers, but I usually get the Bowness burger, the cheeseburger or the BBQ burger. Fries, onion rings and the occasional milk shake. They're currently doing renovations, but still open inside.
Stumbled upon this place after going skating at Bones park. Love it. Total old school drive throught. The decor is legitimate and the service is fantastic. The price is perfect and the food is great.
Coming back to try the milk shakes and the banana split.
EA Supreme and I were in Bowness Park for a community event. I had heard a lot of positive comments about the food at Angel’s Drive In, which is a couple of blocks away from the park. EA Supreme said she’s been coming to Angel’s for over a decade. My boss Tread Lightly has an obsession with the mushroom burger. He informed me that he’s eaten at Angel’s at least a thousand times.
I've probably been here about a dozen times now and it's quite good. Would be 5 stars but the quality is hit or miss. Sometimes the buns can be a bit dry, and the patties are usually a little thin for my liking. But otherwise most things are done quite well. The shakes are great (chai is my fave), all the sides I've tried are really good (queso sticks are delicious and the poutine is delicious, even though it's not made with cheese curds).
Cute little diner that looks straight out of the 50s. Good onion rings and great chicken burgers. Staff are friendly, and while service isn't the fastest, it certainly makes up for it in the way the food tastes.
Tried this place for the first time a couple weeks ago and I now go regularly. Staff are solid as hell, just like the burgers. The onion rings are absolute heaven!
Love this place! Great burgers at a good price. The poutine is soo good. Used to go all the time when we lived in Bowness. Only gets a 4 because the long wait time on some occasions.
I thought this place was pretty good. Aside from the less-than-loved outside appearance, I was pleasantly surprised. My only complaint would be that the bun to patty ratio was a little off, and that it took a little longer than I expected. I assume to later is because it's all made fresh, which it most definitely was. All the toppings on the Deluxe Burgers my boyfriend and I had we're top notch - very fresh. Bacon on the burger was cooked perfectly. Onion rings were crispy and hot and the milkshake was chocolatey and thick. Overall I'd say we enjoyed the friendly staff and the fresh food, and will probably be back when we're in the area.
Absolutely nothing fancy here - just a dive of a burger stand that cranks out consistently solid drive in style fast food. Huge portions of everything, lots of it smothered in gravy or cheese. With lots of comfort food options besides burgers, everyone I know has a different favorite, but for me it's the Bowness Burger and the poutine or onion rings.
This place is classic, and when my family and I are in the mood for this type of food, this is where we come. It's also a great spot for an ice cream treat - shakes, sundaes, floats, soft serve and regular ice cream in lots of flavors.
Staff are friendly, but when it's busy, you might find yourself waiting a little bit.
So good! I'm really happy I decided to stop in
Love these old diners!. We've been numerous times and each time I'm reminded why I miss all these old diners.
The food is always so much better and worth the money than the chain stores and the customer service is great.
When you're the guy who owns the place, you care a lot more than some spoiled kid who's Mom made him give up his XBox and get a job.
Burgers have always been great, fries are excellent and the poutine is awesome!
Only criticism - more indoor seating would be nice.
Burgers and Real Shakes..WOW. What a wonderful new concept, I guess not that new, They have kept it simple and done it right. A great place for a nostalgic burger, fries and shake and even Bacon and eggs if you get there in the morning. This diner is fun and the food is great. The price is pretty good too.
Great food. Consistently good food( been going for over a year). Some of my favourite dishes are the mozza burger and the fish n chips. Milkshakes are amazing! Overall a great little gem, don't let the shabby exterior scare you away.
Great Food. Great Value.. After a walk in Bowness Park, my husband and I decided to grab a bite to eat in the local area. New to Calgary, we checked out UrbanSpoon and read about Angel's Drive thru and the great reviews.
We ordered the grilled chicken sandwich, crispy sandwich and large poutine to share.
The sandwiches were great.. real chicken breast and fresh buns. The batter on my crispy chicken was great .. super tasty. great texture.
The large poutine was huge.. smothered with gravy and oodles of cheese. Really hit the spot! Will be back to try a burger and shake next time.
Amazing!. Such a fantastic Bowness staple! Angel's Drive-In adds a piece of character to this part of the city. Their burgers are the best in the city!
Wow.. I work for a company in toronto where we mainly test several different burger joints. I have tried every place from five guys and fries to good old mcd's but I have never been more pleased in my life. Angel's drive in was a fantastic experience and likely one of the highlights of my trip. The young girl who took my order happen to be Angel herself and she provided me and my friend fantastic service. She recommended the Mozza burger and the fresh fruit strawberry milkshake as those were some of the more popular items on the menu. I was extremely pleased. The burger was delicious, the patty was juicy and the bun was nice and soft. I got a poutine on the side and the fries were freshly cut and the gravy was an impeccable mixture that melted the cheese perfectly. Better yet was the milkshake. A thousand times better then Peter's Drive In. The strawberry's were fresh and I could still taste the flavour in the amazing vanilla ice cream. I told the young lady who took our order about my job and she was quite pleased when i told her afterwards that this may have been the best I'd ever had. I asked her a few questions and she told me how her Uncle had the idea to name the place after her because she was the first girl born into the family after many generations. She also told me how blessed she was to have a Dad who was able to provide her with the best of everything all thanks to that little restaurant.
Also, while me and my friend finished off our meal, a man and a woman who were unable to speak came up to order. Angel somehow managed to communicate with them very well and get their order in just like anyone else. It was a great experience and i highly recommend this restaurant to anyone and everyone. Such a great homey 80's feel. Just AMAZING.
Tried Angel's for the first time and was not disappointed! Had the deluxe burger and deep fried mushrooms...very good! Prices were good and great customer service! I will definitely be a repeat customer!!
A Few Lamentable Changes. ...now they use grocery-store stale buns and they got rid of their crinkle-cut fries! Despite these mishaps, the burgers themselves are still dang tasty!
Delicious Nostalgia. I came here with friends all the time when I was younger, and my excellent memories of Angel's Drive In prove to be true! This place has awesome milkshakes, the burgers and fries are quite nice too! Beware though, like yesterday, the drive-in lineup can get quite long on hot days, but I'd say it's definitely worth the wait most times.
happy eating!
ICECREAM, was the best. Cozy little place to stay, gives you a wonderful little vibe and definitely a place that attracts all the right people.
Yum!. I really liked Angel's Drive in! Had a mozza burger, fries and a rum and butter milkshake. Tasted delicious and just like authentic drive in burgers :) I also like that they accept debit and VISA.
We come here for ice cream on our way to the river. Service is terrible and the restaurant dumpy but the ice cream is cheap.
Happy accident. So it was a friend's birthday and we got off school early so we started mad drinking at 2pm. We got to the strippers and after 7 I was in rough shape. I woke up at 10 in my bed confused and dozed off again. Next morning I woke up with an Angel's Drive In water bottle. So I decided to call up an adventure with my friend and take several busses from the south to get to this place. In a way I'm glad I got black out wasted because I wouldn't have found out about this place otherwise. Too bad I live in the deep south because I haven't been there since. But my experience there and how I ended up there was quite memorable and when I have time and money for gas I will definitely be visiting this place again.
Angel's Drive In is Devine. On a recommendation I took the wife and two kids down to Angel's last evening for what was to become a fast food delight. I had passed by the Drive In on many occasions but never had the courage to stop in as on the outside, it didn't really have any curb appeal as an eatery.
We elected to eat in and found it to be quite busy during the dinner hour. Even with a line up, we got our food within 10 minutes. This may sound long for "fast food", but this is more an establishment that serves fine fast food.
I had the BBQ Burger. The bun was very fresh and tasty. A good white bread bun with sesame seeds on top. The BBQ sauce was likely Bullseye and the burger was topped with mozzarella and mushrooms. The burger was served hot. I do wish that that the burger had lettuce on it. In hind site, I'm sure I could have asked for it. Flavour and texture was wonderful and would highly recommend it.
Kids both had simple cheese burgers and there were smiles all around. The wife had Bowness Burger which she also greatly enjoyed.
We ordered a family pack of fries. This was probably the only slight down side to the meal. While the fries where tasty, crisp and generous in size, they were a bit under whelming when compared to the quality of the burgers and shakes. They were thick cut crinkle style but had a frozen taste.
The real treat came in the form of the shakes. Angel's offers milk shakes in medium, large and jumbo sizes. You can have them made with real fruit (strawberry, banana and blueberry) for an extra $0.50. Well worth the extra cost. Apparently they use quality ice cream for their shakes, and you can taste the difference. Angel's rates as the very best shakes I have had in Calgary to date. This even includes Peter's Drive In!
The restaurant inside makes up for its deficiencies on the outside. Decor is retro 60's feel. Vinyl is plastered all over the ceiling and there are hot rod motif's on the walls with plenty of images of James Dean and such. Restaurant looked very clean. Did not check the cleanliness of the washrooms. The service was very friendly and professional. We received our meals quickly considering the amount of people, and what seems like a not very big kitchen to work in.
Bowness Burger, BBQ Burger, 2x Cheese Burger, Family Fries, 2x Sm. shake, 1 Lrg shake.
Total Bill: $~42
Service: 4.5/5
Food: 4/5
Ambiance: 4/5
Value: 3.5/5
Cleanliness: 4/5
Total: 4.0/5
Would recommend: Yes
Conclusion: I would highly recommend this establishment, but would encourage them to perhaps try for fresh cut fries (if that is in fact what they are not doing). While the price was perhaps a bit high, the food quality did not leave me put off. We will definitely be coming back. Keep up the good work!
Nice place!. Veggie burger was pretty nice, the patty had onion in it, just so you know. fried mushrooms were crunchy on the outside and soft and moist on the inside. good soft ice cream, decent value, unique retro style, very FRIENDLY SERVICE!
Tasty shakes & burgers, but fries.... My husband and I went for a walk in Bowness/Bowmont park and wandered here for some 2 pm lunch. We had no trouble finding a spot in this humble (read: in need of care, but still comfy) place with just a few tables.
We got a Salisbury burger (me), a BBQ burger & fries (him), pepsi and mocha shake. We'd had a rum & butter shake before so we knew the shakes were rich, creamy, and oh-so-tasty. His BBQ burger wasn't bad, but my Salisbury burger won both me and him over - the mushroom sauce is awesome, and of course, fried onions... delish. Of course, the patties are the thin variety (I get so used to my thick homemade ones that I sometimes forget this is how many places do it). If you like a large burger, get a double. The buns were nice too. The fries; however, were nothing to write home about. A bit cool, soft (not in that "perfect for poutine/chip truck" way), pale... these looked like McCain crinkle cuts to me (and not too fresh-cooked). The seasoning on it barely helped. You know the fries aren't real good when I'm putting ketchup on 'em (which we did). Next time, I'd get the onion rings.
Service, while not fast-food fast, was fast enough for me - the guy at the till is nice, and the waitress is well, competent if not smiling (whatever... ).
I'd be curious to try it for a grease-breakfast, or the hot sandwiches (hot chicken or hot beef... the gravy looked alright - not on the poutine though - by my Quebec standards, it's all wrong).
If you want a greasy burger or crinkle fries or delicious onion rings... Irving big stop style. This is the place you want to go. Blink and you'll miss it. Great for a Saturday afternoon lunch ! Makes you feel like a kid! Love it.
Burger Kick!!. After being on a burger craze, and being so disappointed in my last try (CB), Angel's was next. And it did not disappoint! Great burger, and huge! I really enjoyed it, and would recommend to anyone in the area! Give it a go!
Satisfying. I had a deluxe burger and poutine for the first time yesterday. Burger was good - tasted a bit like A&W but not greasy. Poutine was just ok - fries looked like McCain's, gravy was a bit bland, and the cheese wasn't cheese curds. Had a stomach ache afterwards but maybe I just ate too much. Overall, I'd say it was decent and I'd rather go there again rather than a fast-food chain.
Not that i've tried every greesy spoon in Calgary but this is the best one I have tried Bacon cheese burger with a ample amount of fries, it wont leave you hungry after and is so much better than fast-food garbage, $23 to feed family of four not bad.
Awesome!!. I can't believe I've never been to this place before. All I had was a regular single burger and it was pretty awesome. 100 times better than Peter's and a 1000 times better than any fast food joint.
A longtime favorite. I don't get the chance to visit Angel's very often but when driving by I sometimes remember the good experiences I've had in the past and pull in.
There's never been a time I was disapointed doing this and the last time was no exception.
This may not be my all-time favorite cheeseburger but it is good and over-all as a place to pull over and have a burger and a shake it ranks right up there.
My husband introduced me to Angel's Drive In. His dad grew up in Bowness and used to go there when he was a kid! After taking me to Bowness Park for a run around, we took a trip over to Angel's for a cheeseburger and a milkshake, wow! Angel's kicks ass, one outstanding burger later I was a happy camper. Always so happy to find places like Angel's Drive In, it makes it seem as if the universe is in balance and everything is right with the world.
Came here with a friend to try out their burger and sides. We ordered a Salisbury burger, small curly fries, and 3 mac & cheese bites to share. The house-made mushroom sauce in the burger was very delicious and filled with flavours. The sauteed onions added a nice touch. The burger patty was a bit on the thin side and not super juicy. Curly fries were crispy and nicely seasoned. Mac and cheese bites were ok with lots of cheese sauce. We received very good service from our server, who offered to cut our burger in half for easy sharing.
The restaurant had a very unique decor, from the car on rooftop to the records on the ceiling. I would recommend everyone to come check it out at least once but come back more if you enjoy the food. They have lots of milkshake favours to choose from for a warmer day.
The food is really good. Ordered a Mushroom burger and Bowness burger. The Pat’s chili is good too. Always drive pass this restaurant but didn’t get to go in and try the food.
Stopped by for a late lunch after paddling on the Bow. I was starving and ordered a rum and butter milkshake with a turkey club. Everything was delicious. Will make it a regular stop coming back from Bowness Park.
First time having Angel's after passing it many times, and I must say I am 100% impressed and satisfied! The mozzarella burger was big and packed with flavour, the curly fries were plentiful, and the Oreo shake was thick and delicious!
I would definitely recommend this place to anyone, and will definitely be going back!
Some of the best milkshakes I've had in the city, fantastic curly fries and burgers.
My only complaint is that they close at 7pm most weekdays so it's harder to get to for dinner post work.
I ordered their only vegetarian burger, and the burger itself tasted good. The Mediterranean sauce on the other hand only added moisture. I think adding a bit of spice would be a good idea, as well as more vegetarian main courses.
My friend had their Denver, and a milkshake. They said it tasted good, and the chocolate orange flavor of the milkshake was amazing. They said it was like eating a Terry's chocolate orange.
