I could eat here everyday! The unique home cooked menu offers a variety of delicious and kosher meals. It is always enjoyable to stay in and eat, but you can easily pick up any of the food to go - or call your order in before hand. Staff is super nice, you can tell this is a family operation. The walls are adorned with family pictures and souvenirs, creating a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere. My favourite is the grilled special with the fries and a side of the kosher dill pickles! This establishment has he best smoked meats in the city! Can't recommend it enough. The price is decent, and the quality and freshness of the food is always great. Sandwiches are piled high, and portions are very good. You will not leave disappointed (or hungry)

Amazing food with even better service. Loved this place. We ate lunch here two days in a row because it was so good! Stop in on brisket Friday if you are able. It was tender and tasty. The potato salad was yummy! The salmon sandwich was perfect. Can't wait for my next visit to Calgary!

I've eaten at the Mecca of smoked meat establishments in Montreal and I can honestly say this is as good, if not better than I have had there. I'll be run out of Montreal next time I'm there for saying that, but I'll take my chances it was that good.

The quality here is always amazing and the prices are extremely fair. Their chicken club is so juicy, and the fries remained crispy even after sitting in a box for ~30 min before we were able to eat them.
This time around my partner made a mistake on our order and the manager, Peter, went above and beyond any expectation to ensure we got to enjoy our meal. Truly fantastic customer service!
The food here is fantastic! The montreal smoked meat is definitely the best in Calgary! But if you want poutine this is the place, I have had poutine in Québec as recommended by a local and this is the closest to it you will find in Calgary! Add the smoked meat as an add on and your Good to Go!
We had the Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwich, Eggs Benny and Breakfast poutine. I can't stress how amazing everything was. Not a single complaint, everything was great. Will definitely be back. Wish they had a location down south though.
Beef brisket meal (Fridays only) had nicely cooked brisket & lots of it! Definitely hearty eating here. T’s fries were out of this world (get these). Loved the authentic family-run vibe. (4.5/5)
Have stopped by this location a few times, the smoked meat sandwiche is great. I usually go with a friend and split one and we each get a small potatoe salad, loved both. I have also been to the one in Brittania.
After seeing his play on "You gotta eat here" I had to try their smoked meat and other offerings!
Let me tell you, making a choice of what to eat here is a difficult one with so many different dishes but I needed to try the Reuben!
It was absolutely delicious and you need to try the potato salad being a perfect side.
I loved the family feel you got when you are Grumans, you feel instantly comfortable here. Service was great, no complaints to be had.

I could not find my pics from here but had a very good breakfast here. I got the classic egg benedict & it was outstanding the potato latkes were amazing so so good loved the pancetta instead of basic ham & the hollandaise sauce was nice & lemony which is my preference. Seen a guy next to me having the reuben sandwich it looked amazing so I will be back to try that.
Really friendly people and good food. The parking is a bit tough, but I'm glad I tried it. Very busy place, I wouldn't mind trying their catering.
This place is almost still a hidden gem. It is not crazy crowded for breakfast. However, it is busy for lunch during the week. I love their bennies served on latkes (thin and crispy potato pancakes). My husband likes their breakfast poutine and he always chooses their rye bread which is yummy.
We've had their smoke meat sandwich. We are from Montreal so it is not compatible to shwartz's, but it is better than most places in Calgart. I love their potato salad. I've bought their knishes and varnekes to take home. I do not know anywhere else to buy these in Calgary.
I'm not usually a breakfast person but this place's breakfast special was very good! Unfortunately, you have to park on the streets on the weekdays and we didn't know so our drinks were on them! Friendly service and great atmosphere to catch up with friends!
went today for lunch, had the latke's, varenikes, reuben, and a smoked meat sandwich. We had lots to share and pass around. was I impressed.. not really little latkes and varenikes...little greasy Sandwiches were good, but not the Big Wow I was hoping for. The were good. Service was good, restaurant was clean, bathroom was immaculate. We will go back because there are so many things I want to try on the menu. Next time we try breakfast.

These guys are wizards with smoked meat. Loved their smoked meat sandwiches, their smoked meat pizza, and Reuben. Also, the breakfast burger was heart attackishly good. Only complaint would be against their smoked meat pie - for some reason i found it extremely bland and needing seasoning which is not the case with all the other dishes i tried and enjoyed. Seems like everything is made fresh.
This review is for their location out of the Symon's Valley Market - the staff there deserve some recognition and I didn't know where else to post it. We have been a few times, the most recent being this weekend on Father's Day, when we decided to wander the market and hit up Grumans for lunch. We split the smoked meat poutine and the kiddo had a hot dog this time- great as usual. We have also had several other menu items over the past few months - the smoked meat anything is a fav of ours personally.
The staff at this location are terrific - extremely friendly and accommodating, the new Cook Shack out there is a great idea too! Just giving credit where credit is due, sorry this isn't right location. If this Grumans location is anything like the booth at the Farmers Market, I cannot wait to give it a try as well.
One of my favourite breakfast spots. I love their bagel and lox. The salad it comes with has a delicious rosemary vinaigrette. It's soooo good.
They're so consistent and really know how to poach an egg. Love their breakfast special, lox Benedict, and breakfast burrito. Confit potatoes are also delish!

I live near Grumans and went there this weekend for the first time and it was very good!
The inside of the deli is very cute. It's a small place but there are lots of pictures and things to look at on the walls. Because we went on a long weekend there was plenty of seats available and we were sat immediately.
The food at Grumans is very very good! To start we had latkes which were crispy and golden brown - very tasty. Then I had the Montreal smoked meat sandwich - which was excellent. Smoked meat with mustard - nothing better! The meat was cut thick and very juicy. I would definitely get it again! My boyfriend had the shepards pie which was very decadent. Filled with smoked meat and topped with golden mashed potatos, it was very tasty and very filling.
The only critique I would have for Grumans was the timing. It seemed that food came out very slowly. We were in no rush - but our food took 45 minutes to come out once we sat down which was a bit unexpected. However the wait is definitely worth it.
I would highly recommend Grumans!
Ok, this place is amazing!! I'm from Montreal and I can recognize a good Jewish deli. Matzo balls soup was excellent with its fresh dill and soft matzo ball. The ruben sandwich was crispy outside, soft and juicy inside, with real Montreal smoked meat. The kosher pickles were authentic. And I could have eaten a million of those warm buttery rugelahs as dessert. A must go in Calgary!!!
This place is great the smoked meat is as good as you will get outside of Montreal. The Rueben is my go to lunch meal from Gruman's with the potato salad which is really fantastic as well. Get there early on Fridays or well likely be busy.
This place is right across from my work and is always packed and for good reasons too! I have tried various of items off the menu and it's always delicious. The chicken liver on bagettes is great to start, my go to meal is the chicken club sandwich with potato salad and side of coleslaw. Fridays the have their feature brisket, which is super moist and tender. Totally recommend this. There is no parking out front on weekdays so be aware if you are driving there, you will have to park on the street. If you are going for lunch go early cuz they don't take reservations and after 12 there will be a little bit of a wait.
Stumbled into this place at the recommendation of a few friends who worked in the area, and was surprised I haven't been here before. This eatery has a comfort vibe that makes it naturally a neighbourhood favourite, whether you are grabbing a bite to go, or sitting with a few friends. I was craving a burger that day, so I ordered the maple cheeseburger, which was topped with maple peppered bacon, crispy onions, and a citrus aioli, which offered a mouthful of delicious flavour with each bite. I've also heard good things about their Montreal smoked meats, so definitely a place to check out again!
John’s been having mad brunch cravings every weekend now that he has started exercising again. This week we made our way to Grumans! He found out about this place cause they provided some delicious catering for one of his company’s parties. Grumans has been around for a while but they are still one of the hidden gems where you can walk in and get a table right away. Perfect since we were starving!
Winter is coming! Words that make most Calgarians cringe, myself included. It’s unfortunately time to dust off the winter gear and get ready for the deep freeze. When the weather starts to change (for the worse), my food cravings tend to follow suit. Gone are the cravings for light and fresh dishes and in comes cravings for something rich and hearty that will stick to my ribs. Luckily, I’ve discovered a joint with some killer comfort food a few short blocks away in Grumans Delicatessen. With a Sunday lunch planned with my parents, I could think of no better place to go, now that the snow is upon us.

I wanted to write a review in regards to Grumans' gluten-free bread. Though I've yet to be to either of their locations, our company purchased a catered lunch from Grumans for an event a couple of months ago. The food all around was very good, but for myself and one of my colleagues who cannot eat wheat (not a lifestyle choice, we just get sick as dogs if we eat it!) I was very pleasantly surprised with the buns used for our gluten-free sandwiches. They were quite simply the best quality white-bread gluten-free I've yet to come across. They were thick, slightly denser than wheat bread but still nice and fluffy, moist in the same way good white wheat bread is, tasted very similar to wheat bread, and NOT CRUMBLY! This is huge, as anyone with gluten issues understands, because so many companies come close in terms of taste and fluffiness, but the buns almost always crumble apart in your hands, so one's sandwich becomes more of a salad. Besides the excellent gluten-free buns, the sandwiches were delicious, as were the salads, and everyone seemed to enjoy their meals... including the yummy looking dessert bars I couldn't eat. :P
Love this place, absolutely love it. Have been for breakfast a number of times, and have always come away satisfied (get Latkes as a side. It's like getting Hashbrowns elsewhere, but 1000x better). Have also been for a sandwich and potato salad at lunch time. Their smoked meat is some of the best you will find in Calgary in terms of its similarity to what you get in Montreal.
Perhaps my favorite thing is the staff at Grumans. The serving staff is always so overwhelmingly friendly and helpful. If They will make you feel warm and welcome like you are at a family meal.
Love the smoked salmon combo with the capers & sliced red onion. Cute deli, not the same as a typical Jewish deli from Montreal but this is probably the closest you'll find in Calgary. The prices are typical for downtown Calgary. Cute atmosphere, would come here again.
I love Gruman's because of the friendly service and delicious menu.
The open-faced grilled veggie sandwich is a great option for vegetarians on an otherwise carnivorous menu. They also have a great selection of local beers.

If you get there on a day the Flames are playing, you can get the Classic Reuben pizza: it's a Latke Crust with smoked meat and sauerkraut as toppings. Give it a try!
Currently my favourite deli in Calgary. This Jewish deli has an amazing menu with latkes, matzo ball soup and kosher-style pickles. However for a lunchtime meal, it's the sandwiches that have me coming back.
The house special Reuben was loaded with amazingly flavourful smoked meat matched with enough sauerkraut that wasn't overpowering and Swiss cheese to cut the meat taste in each bite. Topped on a buttered grilled rye bread the sandwich was amazing.
The nosh was quite nice too. The Kosher-style pickles were dirt cheap at $1.50 and a great way to cleanse the palate at the beginning of the meal, also great to keep and nibble on in between strong-flavoured bites of the meal. The latkes were also top quality. Fresh potatoes fried together for a nice crunch for beautiful texture.
It's a great homey diner feel to this restaurant. Very relaxed for a bite and conversation with friends. My only issue is that I wish they were open even longer than their 3:30 p.m. closing time.
According to my friend O, Grumans Catering and Delicatessen used to be pretty sketchy looking from the outside until recently (they did some renos due to a fire). Heck, I hadn’t even heard of it’s existence until she suggested we check it out for a late Saturday lunch. Living in Montreal taught me a few things. If you want smoked meat, you go to Schwartz’s Deli. How would Grumans compared in relation to the holy Jewish institution? Read on friend, read on.
My mum and I come here for lunch sometimes and it is one of our favourite places. We usually get the Reuben sandwich because it is our tradition and Grumans does it best- just like my mum made it when I was small.
This place is a gem in the city, not only with great food and reasonable prices but the atmosphere is something we really appreciate every time we come in.

Today was my first time, & it will not be my last
Visited this great spot over the weekend for a laid-back lunch date. It was my first time to Gruman's and I wasn't disappointed. I tried the classic Montreal smoked meat sandwich and fries, as well as the pickles. All of the items met my high expectations. The only thing that could be improved upon would perhaps be the final "check back" after diners have finished their meals and may be looking for the cheque. We had to wait an oddly long time to request the bill, compared to the prompt service experienced throughout the meal. I will be back as I'm eager to try the other menu items!
Amazing catering food & service. Our son got married April 25/15 - we had a wedding rehearsal dinner at the bride's parents house in Calgary on the 24th. The food was amazing as well as the service (salmon, chicken, carrots, caesar salad, fetticini pasta, cheesecake). We rented all the dishes and cutlery and had a server as well - so wonderful - amazing food and service. Would highly recommend and use them again!!
Was there twice in two days plus got take out. I was there last Friday and Saturday as I was at the Stampede grounds and walked down. On Friday, I had the dill pickles (nice crunch, great flavour), the chicken matzo ball soup (tasty), and the Reuben sandwich (very tasty, very generous portions) - the best Reuben I have had. The next day, I went back as the food was so good and had the smoked and poached breakfast poutine, and that was also very good so I ordered take-out for later in the day a smoked meat roll and a bagel with cream cheese and lox. If I lived in Calgary, I would be a regular! So if you are close to downtown or the Stampede grounds, make your way to Grumans and enjoy!

Great bunch spot. They have a lot of great unique dishes on the menu. I have only been for brunch but would love to go for lunch and try the Reuben. The challah French toast is heavenly and just mouth watering. The Lox Benedict is something you dream about. Family friendly environment and unique decor. Would be nice to see more interaction from the owners and management. Service is a bit slow but it is always busy on weekends. Servers are great for recommendations and one guy we had was such a delight for a hungover Saturday morning. Worth going for sure.
Good Food/ Odd Practices. The food here is good . Service is good for the most part . Ordered the Smoked meat sandwich and Fries. Tasty. Portions are acceptable. The odd thing is that I ordered a side gravy, for which I understand the extra charge. The gravy was served in a very small container, and I ran out, so I just asked for a little top up. I was surprised to see two charges for gravy on the bill. This is so nit picky. Your sandwiches are pricy enough! Another thing that is odd, is that the tip percentage comes as standard percentage on the machine. It is calculated as a percentage of meal cost together with the gst. Why am I paying for a tip on the gst amount. This is not part of the meal I enjoyed. This are small things that detract me from the good food, and make me often detour to another restaurant. Mr. Owner, if you are reading this, please take note.
The Challah French Toast was really good, but is prefer it with a little more cinnamon and spice. I tasted the Reuban and it was really good! My friend had no complaints about his cheeseburger. The biggest complaint I had was the tea - I was really, really impressed by the loose leaf flavour and presence, but the container held way too little tea (especially for the price).
Consistently great food and friendly owner. Very clean. My favourite by far is the Reuben as it isn't your traditional corned beef, but Montreal smoked meat. It is one heaping meat sandwich that never fails to satisfy. They have a take out menu but I find you can get anything on the menu to go.
Always consistent and delicious!. Grumans is a GREAT place. The food is consistent, and always good, the coffee is SUPERB! The wait staff is helpful and prompt. It was my 2nd time eating this past weekend, got the urge to re-visit after a friend mentioned he would go at least twice a month! I have yet to see anything but excellent service, and happy, comfortable, satisfied customers.
I ordered the latkes with leek and sour cream to share with my guest, I had the omlette with cheese and mushroom with hash and rye toast which was AWESOME. My guest had the breakfast of eggs bacon and hash and loved the Latkes we shared! The coffee was the best I have had in months at any diner. My guest loved it so much he took menus back to give to his colleagues at work to check out this week! We had a lovely visit. Great value compared to diners just up Edmonton trail that are twice the price, just as good and a longer wait!

Bellaissma. Came in for YYC burger week. Erin our waitress let us know about the Bella burger that Gruman's was competing. I came in specifically for the burger and my mouth started watering when I head the words confit tomatoes. the burgers came out hot, huge and AMAZING! The meat was perfect and the tomatoes were to die for. The Portobello mushroom cap that the burger is named after I could take or leave but everything all together with the cheese and onion sauce it was amazing. The potato salad side was also delicious and a nice alternative to fries. They also have latkes, verenikes and queniches? for sides that I will have to come back and try another day. Service was great the hostess and waitress were both very knowledgable about the burger special and we got our drinks and food pretty quickly. My only complaint about Gruman's is that one of their employees was wearing a Boston Bruins T-shirt. Perhaps they should update their uniforms.
Was here the other day for lunch and it was the first day of burger week in Calgary and they entered the Bella burger it was amazing! A must try and service was great and very helpful they gave lots of recommendations can not wait to go back!
Homemade goodness. When it's cold out - have something from Grumans. Wait - when it's warm out, ALSO have something from Grumans. The sandwiches, the latkes, the eggs benedict - it was difficult just choosing something to eat. The chic diner atmosphere and the nostalgic photos on the wall take you back to a simpler time and that's exactly what Grumans served - good, simple, food that you can pronounce. YUM! Two thumbs up!

Best smoked meat in Calgary. We have gone to Grumans 7 or 8 times in the past 6 months. Trying many things on the menu and enjoyed them all. I have to say the basic smoked meat on rye with potatoe salid is just excellent. Great flavor and portions, really the best smoked meat sandwich in Calgary.
After watching a foody show left craving a great Montreal smoked meat sandwich we googled Calgary 'authentic Jewish deli,smoked meat' among recognized names Grumans popped up and we set out to give it a try. Glad to say after returning many times it's our favourite. Portions are a good size, everything is tasty including the sides, the meat is nicely cleaned, Grumans does everything right. The service is friendly, the manger goes out of his way to make clients feel welcome, the atmosphere fun clean and urban feeling. Everytime I've been back it's busier and I couldn't be happier for them! I've tried, smoked meat and Reuben on gluten free, coleslaw, potato salad, eggs Benny, the pickes- making myself hungry thinking about it-I'm committing to try something new next time!

Wow.. I signed up and made an account just to post a review about this amazing little joint. I went on Saturday to check out the breakfast (heard really good things about it) and ordered the salami and eggs (an omelette). Mindblowing.
Whoever made my meal obviously is skilled at the art of breakfast. The eggs were *perfectly* cooked. No brown, seasoned to perfection. Eggs are a tricky thing to cook, hence why I'm so impressed. The thing that topped it all off was the hashbrowns. Perfect size, golden brown, perfect amount of seasoning and again, cooked perfectly.
Props to the cook who made my breakfast, he/she obviously knows what they're doing and it's hard to find a restaurant that can execute a breakfast as well as this place. The customers around me seemed to be enjoying their food as well (heard a table behind me saying how awesome the homemade hollandaise sauce was).
Server was extremely friendly, full of smiles and made me feel very welcome.
You must go to this place. I'll be back next week to try lunch for sure.
Delicious Party Buffet!. Judy and Jessica helped us out and put together a fantastic buffet menu for 50 on two weeks notice. The food was a hit! Folks were raving about the beef brisket, crab cakes and herbed butter. Everything was hot and fresh despite the long drive down to South Calgary. Grumans knows food. The staff was so friendly, helpful and professional. We are grateful!
Delicious knishes and smoked meat sandwiches meat not too fatty. Great service, however the latkes wre too dry no onion in them tastless and no applesauce served with them
A few mix ups with our order that were dealt with quickly by our server Tracy but the food itself was tasty. Great Reuben sandwich, kinishe were ok, mushroom soup was delicious.
Best Breakfast in the City. Popped into this little bit of heaven on a recent Saturday and loved it! Great welcoming staff, incredible breakfast options and best of all, elbow room. I am so sick of going to tiny breakfast joints and being packed in like a sardine. I like a restaurant that is calm and relaxing, not filled with a cacophony of plates and silverware and people that look and sound like they just crawled out of bed. Grumans is spotless - impeccably clean - and that speaks volumes. It's a 10 out of 10 in every aspect - food, service, cleanliness.

Amazing!. We just had lunch at Gruman's and I must say, it felt like being home in Montreal! We had the matzo ball soup, which was perfectly simple with a clean chicken broth, a few veg and 1 delicious matzo ball. Then we had a Ruben and a traditional smoked meat on the best rye bread I've had in ages. The meat was perfectly cut, lean and spiced, just like it should be. We upgraded our sides to have potato knishes, which were rich and nicely complimented with onion. Not to be forgotten, were the juicy pickles that perfected our lunch. Two drooling thumbs way up!

Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwich. Glad that my co-worker and I went for lunch there after reading about it in the Calgary Hearld. Started off with the Potatoe Latkes and they were very good. We both had the smoked meat sandwich with fries and coleslaw. Since the both of us were having the same thing our waitress Tracy suggested that one of us try the dry smoked meat and the other in brine (traditional) . So when the meal came we split the sandwiches so both of us could try it.
The dry was not bad but I perfer the brine soaked one. The owner Peter had come over to see how we liked our meal, not to many owners do that and Tracy was friendly, quick and informative.
We had no problem getting on street parking as the parking lot is reserved during the work week. I would not hesitate going back there for a great sandwich.
Ok where to start. First of all, I have been to this spot 6 times in the last two weeks. Not because it's convenient, oh no. The chopped chicken liver and the Reuben. Those items have cast a spell on me and refuse to let go. Highly recommend. Fairly priced, an super friendly staff. Call me a regular, cause I will be back. My only complaint is the hours. They need to be open later!!!!! That's just me though. Keep up the good work.
Grumans for Breakfast. We decided to try Grumans for breakfast today and were very happy with the experience. I had the inexpensive bacon, eggs, potatoes and toast and ordered sausage as well as I could not decide between that or bacon. My friend had the in-house cured lox and bagel with fruit and while pricer she was very pleased with her meal. I had one of the 2 sausages that I ordered but they were just slightly different flavored than I cared for and the waitress insisted I not pay for it. The waitress was bubbly and interesting and got my morning off to a good start. I would definitely recommend breakfast and I've heard good things about lunch!
Mouth watering!!!!!!. The service was very friendly and the food.....wow! I had the Feta Burger mmmmm! Very delicious. Juicy but not too messy and the coleslaw that came with it?!..... just the best! Now I need to go back and taste every single sandwiches on that menu. ;-)
Yummy in my tummy!. This place is awesome! We had no problem finding street parking right out front and no wait for a table after 12:45pm. I had a smoked meat sandwich with fries and coleslaw and it was the best I have ever had in Calgary. Great value for the price and you'll clean your plate not because there wasn't enough food but because it was so good!. Friendly and informative staff, that understand and have a passion for food. The restaurant itself is funky and very clean. Can't wait to become a regular. I highly recommend you try it.

Grumans early-bird special, available from 7 to 9 am weekdays is maybe the best breakfast deal in Calgary. For the amazing price of $7 (including tax), I get two perfectly poached eggs, two thick slices of double-smoked bacon, two feathery latkes (potato pancakes) and some nice multi-grain toast. Oh, and endless cups of great coffee from local roaster Angel’s beans. Another reason to go early: Free on-street parking till 9 am.
