Review Rodney's Oyster House - Calgary

Heather McCann
The food here is amazing – if you love seafood, you will not be disappointed. For takeout, we ordered a Lobster Roll Kit for Two, and it really was the best lobster roll I have ever had! Even the arugula side salad that came with it was perfection. We loved the Traditional Shrimp Cocktail as well. For dessert, we had the Belgian Chocolate Mousse, which was just sublime with the sponge toffee bits. I chose this place for my birthday meal, and I would definitely recommend Rodney’s to anyone who loves seafood.

Love the happy hour half dozen oysters with drinks Mon to Saturday 3 pm to 6 pm. Am now a fan of fresh oysters. The casual atmosphere at Rodneys is great for family and friends to meet up for drinks and meals. The servers are very attentive and super friendly. The scallop burgers are also really good! Highly recommend

Amazing place for oysters. I don't eat a whole lot of oysters but it was super delicious. The staff that served us was first class service. Explained all the different kinds of Oysters that come from different parts of the world and what would suit our taste buds. Highly recommend for Oyster lovers!

We went here for oysters with a party of six, our server was lovely. The decor was elegant yet paired with a casual atmosphere. We went on a Tuesday evening. All six of us ordered a blend of east coast and west coast oysters. Fresh, lovely, and beautiful chilled. Excellent selection of seasoning for the oysters as well. The bathroom art in the men's and woman's was absolutely fascinating. ( Our party had compared the art and had an excellent time doing so, great conversation pieces!) Absolutely worth it!

Unfortunately, we weren't completely impressed with @rodneyscalgary . We went there for a friend's gathering and there were about 6 of us. The server came to our table twice and anytime after that we needed someone we'd have to waive them down. Our appetizers and meals, for each person, all came at different times, and one of our friends actually got her meal before her appetizer. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱: 🦪 Great atmosphere for a night out on the town 🦪 Staff was friendly when we waved them down 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝘁-𝗦𝗼 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱: 🦪 Server rarely came to our table 🦪 None of us were really impressed with the taste of the food. The fish tacos were soggy, the calamari was bland and our Caesar was so spicy it was undrinkable (and we eat and drink SPICY!) 🦪 Timing of dishes was not on point. This is the second time I've had a subpar experience at Rodney’s 🥺. I love seafood and was really hoping for something different. *Disclaimer: My opinions are my own and it doesn’t mean that your experience will be the same or that you won't enjoy the food. 💕 Follow me @WanderingInYYC for all things Calgary!

Wow. Beautiful decor inside (like Fisherman'sWharf San Fran or New Orleans), great service, $5 pints during happy hour, but wait for it ... the fish tacos are to DIE for, the equal best I have ever had! Huge, flavourful, and incredible value on Monday Happy Hour at $12. On Tues Happy Hour they are $2.50 each - no way! See the pic, and drool over their incredible fish tacos. I can't wait to head back there (I would happily pay $20any night for those tacos!)

Food is awesome! So flavourful, every bite was a treat. We liked the ambience of the restaurant as well and all our servers were super nice.

First of all, restaurant decor and layout was great. I would come here just to hang out and drink. They had a few choices of beer and cocktails at a reasonable price. The waiter was very knowledgeable about the oysters and recommended his favorite ones which we appreciated since we didn't know much about the different oysters. I also got the clam chowder which was amazing. Oysters were a little expensive but they were the best quality in calgary I've tried so far. I would definitely come here again when I'm craving oysters, especially for the happy hour.

Was told a little over an hour before a birthday dinner reservation that we were being bumped due to an Xmas party! Won’t be back again!

This place is awesome! I’ve been here 4 times during my 3 weeks in Calgary. I tried crabs, lobster roll, scallops - all delicious. Happy hour oysters are super fresh! Staff is very friendly! If you are in Calgary, you should check this place :)

Rodneys oyster house lives up to its expectation in terms of oysters only. They were fresh and delicious. The shrimp cocktail was also pretty good. However, the the rest of the menu was lackluster and over priced. Even the classics such as lobster roll or clam chowder was uninspired. Being that as it may, I am sorry to say that I will probably never return to this establishment simply due to its lack customer service. We had a party of 6 and our server was atrocious. When there were questions about the menu she wanted the whole party there, which is silly. Furthermore, she continued to be dismissive and rude throughout our dinner (drinks were late, mains were forgotten about, we asked for bread she rolled her eyes). This made it a very uncomfortable dining experience. Finally, when it came to the bill and we requested separate bills , she was upset because it wasn't possible. When we questioned her on that she agreed to separate them except for on shared meal. Then the after three attempts to get the bills right she said under her breath "well maybe you shouldn't move around as much" and took the bills off table and stormed off. When we spoke with the the manager she was very apologetic and ensured us that they take their customer service seriously and believe in a great dining experience. She provided us with a drink on the house for next time. Which we were thankful about. However, if we are paying for what is advertised as warm hospitality, great work ethic and elevated dining experience rodneys oyster house falls short. No one wants to be belittled during their dining experience. Certainly didnt feel the warm hospitality from the maritimes.

We moved back to Calgary from Toronto. The one thing we knew we'd be doing is going to Rodney's. For great seafood in Calgary, the pickings are slim, so having a place like Rodney's is fantastic! We have had wonderful experiences there since returning with the GM, Brad, and the fantastic and attentive staff. Definitely one of our fav places to go (: Keep it up!

Great food and customer service. Oysters where fresh and delicious and we had Rob as our server, he was informative, funny and speedy with our drinks. Try the Land & Sea, you will not be disappointed!

The best schuckers in town!! Amazing accompaniments to the oysters and always a smiling face, great service, a great glass of wine, pint or cocktail!

Superior SEA Food and Most EXCELLENT Staff!! I was in Calgary for 3 days and went here for a feed of fresh oysters everyday day. Rob was shucking and a great ambassador! Good luck in the upcoming Schuckers competition, you'll love P.E.I. The entire staff here is knowledgeable and very competent. The freshly made crab cakes the best I've ever had and the scallops super. Thankyou for making this one fantastic dining experience.

Gina and her staff did an amazing job of hosting my daughters wedding. The food and and service were excellent. We appreciate the help they gave us throughout the planning and culmination of the event. It could of have gone better!!👍👍👍

Great place for GREAT food. The Manhattan Clam Chowder and Tuna Tacos make for just the right amount. If you are craving comfort food with an update, the Lobster Mac and Cheese is very good. For all you oyster lovers out there, this is THE place to go!
Alison Hui
Excellent service, explaining all the seafood and everything on the menu, and giving us awesome suggestions!! Food tasted fantastic! Love it!

Best seafood spot in Calgary. Everything is. Cooked perfectly every time. Seafood so fresh you'd swear you lived on the coast

The best friendly service staff we have ever experienced in Calgary. The service is among the best we have ever experienced including our international travels. The menu pricing is in my opinion very affordable for an amazing quality and flavour sea food. Rest assured, just because you can't see the ocean from here, this is some of the best seafood we have had the pleasure to enjoy including east and west coasts. There is no pretentious atmosphere here, just friendly down to earth staff.

I have always been a fan of Rodney's, when I go to Vancouver it is always my first stop, love the Yaletown location there. <br/><br/>I end up here once or twice a month for some oysters and wine and a great relax.<br/><br/>The oysters here are amazing. The sauces that are presented are the best anywhere, such a great selection. The staff are knowledgable about each and every oyster selection, I have always been a fan of East Coast. Malpeque is one I always have a few of. <br/><br/>Go you will not be disappointed. There are a lot of choices of seafood for those who do not like oysters<br/><br/>Last review was read 16,265 times

I'm not exaggerating when I say that this restaurant is one of the best I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing.<br/><br/>My husband brought me here for a date. Immediately, we were seated and enjoyed impeccable service throughout the night. Despite training two new hires, our server Jay never failed to make himself available.<br/><br/>We split the white plate special appetizer of pork belly and scallops, which was phenomenal. My husband had the land and sea white plate special while I had the 1.5lbs lobster. Both were beautifully plated and tasted superb. The scallops were cooked to perfection. The sauces on both the appetizer and my husband's main were sweet and savory, and paired perfectly.<br/><br/>I recommend this place to anyone and everyone. It is easily one of the best restaurants in the city, seafood or otherwise. We will absolutely return; this is our new date night favorite.

Server provided an educational intro to oysters. Unfortunately he forgot about us for awhile after that. Entrée had lots of scallops, but no carbs! (3.5/5)

We managed to get in without a reservation on a Saturday evening. Service was prompt. We started with the Scallop ceviche which was refreshing and superb as well as the the tuna tartare. The deep fried soft shell crab wasn't anything special but was good. We tried 6 different oysters (all east coast)- all amazing. The server suggested one off the menu "raspberry", one of the best tasting. The shrimp and scallop pasta was almost amazing- the scallops and shrimp were cooked so nicely and the pasta wasn't so heavy- it was just right. Keep in mind this was our first time here and I have nothing bad to say- great, fresh seafood and good service. If I lived in Calgary- I would come here again and again!

This is a great looking place, the service was good , the server friendly , however the food wasn't near as good as I had hoped, I am from the west coast and used to good fresh seafood, and I know its a challenge, the oysters were about the best thing we had they were fresh and presented well, and i really enjoyed them, the Crab Cakes. (no flavor) Fish and Chips (bland) Chowder (bland) Cole slaw(Bland).<br/>The place itself is nice and I can see the attraction, but the food just wasn't seasoned up to par.

This place is aweaome! We ordered their fish & chips which was crispy and not greasy, the fries were so good we ate all the fries, which normally some fries always gets left behind. The coleslaw however needs more work, it's not ceramy and lacked flavor. The crab cakes were delicious! Not to dry but could use a little more sauce due to the size of the crab cake, they use 3oz of pure dungeonless crab meat with no breading inside to bind it. So its quite big and filling. The apple slaw served on top gives a great texture of crunch and slight sweetness to compansate the slight heat you get from the sauce served with the crab cake. Their Scallops were superb! Cooked just right not over done and served with broccolini and i think swiss chard? Almost gives a slight southern feel. Their raw oysters were awesome! Served on a tray of crushed ice and fresh horseradish and lemon wedges. They serve with their in house made sauces, which goes from mild to hot. They also have a vodka infused with peppercorns and citrus peels sauce for a slight punch to your oysters. The server Cedric (hope i spelled ot right) was amazing funny and entertained us with him showing how to shuck an oyster and educated us on differences of the origins of oysters served. He was a great waiter and a memorable one. This is a must try. Well worth it.

Went to Rodney's for the first time and it was happy hour! We got the fish tacos, crab cakes, and fish & chips (half orders of the last two). The beer-battered haddock in both the tacos and the fish & chips was fried perfectly and delicious. The tacos had good flavour, however, the sauce was too viscous and kept leaking out of the tortilla. The French fries were cold and limp. The most disappointing part was the crab cake - it lacked crab flavour and was over-compensated with spice. The service was fine, though unremarkable. Overall, I would go back just for the crispy beer-battered haddock!

Delicious seafood! We had Great service. Found our new favourite place! We will be coming back! Fantastic menu of options!! Fresh and great presentation'

The Toronto location spoiled me with great pricing (which was a little high, but heck that's Toronto) and awesome selection.  When this location opened up we rushed to come try here, thinking speciality of oysters would mean the end of everyone else in town trying to compete.  <br/><br/>Instead they are higher priced, and the caliber is so/so.  Their chowder is not memorable.  Don't know if I'd come back.  Sigh.

I thought the food was great. It was a stand up event for their 2nd bday so food was being served all over the place along with different drink stations. Food creations included fresh shucked oysters, smoked salmon, candies salmon, tuna on crostini, crab cakes, mussels on a spoon, shrimp sliders, flat breads, fish and chips, New England clam chowder and fish tacos. Yes, I ate all that. For beer they had Trolley 5, Wild Rose, Fernie, Steamwhistle. The food was all fresh and the event went seamlessly. I'll have to go back for lunch or dinner soon!
Amy
I've been here 3 times and have always had a great experience. Obviously the seafood can't compare to places like Vancouver. It's still fresh but not "right out of the ocean" fresh. Despite that, the oysters were always perfect. Not fishy at all, and their variety of sauces were fun to try. The lobster roll is so buttery with a generous portion of lobster. I don't understand why the rating is only average. I love it here!

The atmosphere was great; definitely an East Coast inspired vibe. Service was decent as well, given how dead it was. We ordered Grace's soup to start. It was tasty, albeit on the salty side, and was completely absent of any halibut, even though the menu suggested it should have it. We ordered the Captain's platter to share, even though we thought it was odd that it was chilled. Most likely the main items were defrosted a couple nights before and had sat in the fridge for awhile. Luckily they had some sauces to hide the old seafood taste. Definitely needed some pepto after this meal. I think I'll avoid seafood restaurants in Calgary from now on.

We came here for some drinks and oysters after work. The happy hour oyster and beer special is amazing! The oysters were so fresh and tasty and we loved all the little condiments that came with. We sat right at the bar so got to talk to the bartenders and shuckers while they did their thing. The restaurant itself has a very cool vibe, and the decor is so charming. We also tried the haddock sliders and lobster tacos and both were very tasty. Will be back for sure!

Came with my wife to celebrate our anniversary.  We came early and were seated promptly with great attention from the staff.  Our server was super helpful, funny, personal and all around awesome. We started with some very tasty chowder, oysters (go for the east coast ones), fried clams and smoked salmon. I'd skip the smoked salmon next time around. We moved into mains with a Thai based mussels special of the day which was very tasty!  We also had a large order of the scallops, which was the only dish that was disappointing as the scallops were pricey, small and a bit overdone. We also planned on ordering the lobster roll and the pasta clams dish but our server who was super cool in cautioning us from ordering too much. We did go with the lobster roll as well, which was alright, it did have good chunks of lobster but the roll was a bit too buttery for my taste.<br/><br/>Hearing that we were celebrating our anniversary, our server bought us a mousse dessert that was very nice. Overall a very enjoyable experience, with exceptional service.
Chantal
Great experience. Well worth it. If you sit at the bar its even better as you can see them wokr the oysters. The ambiance is awesome. Will definitely come back<br/>

Loved the ambience, and service was great.  However, we weren't too impressed with the food.  Found some of the oysters to be quite salty, clam chowder just tasted like cream, and lobster roll was quite bland.

I was lucky enough to get tickets to see The Little Prince musical being held by Theatre Calgary a few weeks ago. Before catching the show we obviously had to get a nice meal, right?. Rodney’s is where the old Mansion/Tantra used to be.  Instead of a dark, grimy nightclub there’s now a softly lit open concept restaurant.  It was kind of amazing to see what it had been transformed into since the last time I had set food into the building.

Four of us dined and all were in agreement that the service we received was excellent. Unfortunately the quality of the food did not match. The taste, presentation and overall food quality was very poor. Having dined at Rodney's in Vancouver several times and enjoyed our meals there, we were very disappointed with our Calgary experience. Definitely would not recommend and will not be returning.

Awesome service. My date and I were in a rush and staff were extremely attentive and accommodating. The oysters were an experience and we wished we had spared more time to try and savour the variety of sauces. Will definitely be back!
No More Gluten For This Newton
Excellent with a slight downfall.<br/>Oysters 101, a must for a date night. So informative.<br/>The staff are fun, chatty and delightful.<br/>The main meal was a buffet family style at our table. Food was unbelievable!<br/><br/>Only downside, I mentioned I was gluten free, and the chef kind of shrugged it off, and said most of the food was ok.<br/>Then, just to make sure I asked the manager and he confirmed different things.<br/>Being celiac, I had them go over all the items one more time, and check with the chef before I ate anything. Finally, I got the ok on certain items.<br/><br/>What turned it around, the things that were not GF, the chef/kitchen then made a special plate for me. I left very pleased. Not sure if it was the server's idea or the chef's, but i left happy.

After hearing lots of reviews for Rodney's we decided to finally come in and check it out. <br/>First off I love the room. They've made it feel like a seaside getaway. <br/>Our server Kelsey was amazing. After telling her it was my first time she walked me through the menu and gave me her top picks. We ended up getting the mussels, chowder and oysters and loved it all. Kelsey gave us the full rundown on the in house sauces and what went well with it. Having a background in the serving industry it is refreshing to have a knowledgable and attentive server. <br/>We will be back. I recommend everyone to try it or come back and give it another go.

Seafood is my life! And I can honestly say that Rodney's is so fresh and so good. They have fresh oysters from both the East and West coast. We got their lobster roll as well and that was also really rich and filling. The atmosphere is also really nice.
For The Love Of...
We're suckers for a good seafood feast. In years past when a special occasion rolled around we often chose to celebrate at Red Lobster with their 'Ultimate Feast'.  Since then we've had the pleasure of dining at some amazing seafood restaurants (see Ship on the Shore, Edinburgh and Hog Island Oyster Co., San Francisco).  Part of me still craves that buttery plate of seafood, but I think our tastes have matured.  Thankfully Rodney's Oyster House has opened up a new location in Calgary and more upscale seafood eats are now easier to be had than ever before. We couldn't resist the 'Captain's platter' which included steamed half lobster, crab claws, prawns, oysters and potted mussels. The oysters were extremely fresh and just as good as those we had recently at Hog Island. The crab claws were served with a delicious lemon mayonnaise while the lobstar and prawns were steamed to perfection. The potted mussels were our surprise favourite on the platter, being pickled in a mixture of butter, lemon and dill...<br/>Check our blog for full details and pictures.

This may be my favorite new place in Calgary! Went last night for a double date and everything from the service to the food to the drinks to the decore was amazing! Ive never had oysters so naturally had to try some at rodneys. The server was extremely helpful when ordering and had great suggestions for a group of 4. We got the oyster taster platter and tried 4 different kinds. All were great and very good sizes. There's an endless selection of sauces as well and the server that brought out the oysters explained everything including what each one was and all the different sauces plus how much of everything to use. Really great! For the mains we had lobster and clams. My goodness. Absolute heaven and really decently priced. The cocktail and beer menus are also fantastic with lots of options for the beer and wine lovers wether on a budget or ready to splurge. Great experience. Great service. Great food. Will be back for sure!

Recently I ventured out to Rodney's Oyster House for lunch. A newer restaurant in Calgary that is all seafood all the time. I was not disappointed. Living here you just get used to paying more for seafood and the prices are on par with other restaurants offering seafood. And you also expect the seafood to be good.<br/><br/>As soon as you walk in it's light, airy, spacious and welcoming. I loved the decor with the whimsical furniture and oyster bar in the middle of the restaurant - it's all very nautical and the perfect atmosphere. We were greeted right away and seated. Very friendly staff and attentive.<br/><br/>We tried some of the oysters to start after recommendations by the server. I found the condiment rack they brought out very cool (just a minor distraction) and quite enjoyed the pepper flavoured vodka as a topper for my oysters. I made sure to sample all the condiments and they were all tasty. The oysters were delicious.<br/><br/>For lunch I had the tuna tacos. After assembling I topped mine with a little squeeze of the charred lime on the plate - it added the perfect finish. Fresh & simply delicious.<br/><br/>What a great experience for my first visit to Rodney's. I do have to say the pictures in the bathrooms kind of took me by surprise and didn't seem to flow with the nautical theme lol, but in the end no bigs.<br/><br/>Will be back and hopefully soon.

For Jay’s 44th birthday he chose seafood for dinner. I had heard good things about Rodney’s and the menu looked good so we gave it a shot. The restaurant is bright and open – a nice change from the dark, closed in steak houses I’ve been to lately. The white walls and big windows gave a fresh feeling. Unfortunately, we were seated in an area off to the side that had a shorter ceiling and a darker feeling.
Fat Cat
A Friday night and this barn of a place is pretty much empty. This should have been a clue. Small choice of oysters and the 4 varieties we had could have all been the same. Shrimp with garlic butter was just overcooked shrimp in something pale yellow. Mussels were the tiniest I have ever seen - meat size of a small finger nail.<br/><br/>I am a fan of Rodney's in Toronto and Vancouver. This place only shares the name. A sad excuse for a restaurant.

Is 6.0 an option?? Exceptional experience at Rodney's. Oysters and clams were perfect. Fresh and full of flavor. Service was prompt, professional and very friendly. I highly recommend Rodney's to anyone looking for fresh seafood.

Seafood on the prairie? They do it so damn well. My girlfriend and I came here for valentine's day this year. We started with 6 different types of oysters and then split a sampler platter. Until we ate here I could only think of two times in my life where my mind was blown by a bite of food (a really good seafood alfredo pizza and the candied trout at River cafe). Rodney's smoked oysters blew my mind and now I have a 3rd mouthgasm to add to my list. Needless to say, I really really enjoyed the food here.

Let me start my saying I LOVE THIS PLACE!  I love the concept, I love the vibe, I love fresh seafood in Alberta, I love the ambiance, I love everything!!  The outside.  The beautiful inside.   I love the East Coast feeling of this place and the fact that everything centers around the center bar where the shucking happens!

Had a great time at Rodney's last night. Sat at the bar had some oysters, lobster corn dog, tempura coconut shrimp n scallops. Can't wait to return for the lobster roll!!

Delicious.<br/><br/>Family and I went for lunch early July and made a reservation the day of our lunch with no problems.<br/>The vino, oysters, fish and chips, mussels and the lobster roll were all fantastic, very fresh and flavourful!<br/>No complaints about the service either. Our server was attentive and made great recommendations.<br/>Can't wait to go back!<br/><br/>

Been meaning to come here for quite a while now after seeing pictures of their food on my fb feed. Been craving for oysters forever. Our server was great, and he took our orders promptly and was patient with us as we weren't sure of what to get. We let him pick the oysters for us as we weren't sure what to get. I got the clam chowder to start which was fabulous! Clams with every bite. Super yummy. The bf one of their white plate specials; the beef tenderloin "carpetbagger"; he said it was good, had to search for the cotuit oyster though as it was buried under the demi glace hollandaise. <br/><br/>Our server gave us a great explanation of the sauces for the oysters before they arrived. Sadly, a waitress from another table took them away quickly from us. She grabbed them off our table without asking. All she said was that they would bring it back if you have oysters. I understand that another table might need them, but we were in the process of reading the sauces and trying them to see which ones we would be using for our meal. Thank you for so rudely interrupting what we were doing. What frustrated me was that I saw some sitting on empty tables, she could have just easily walked a few meters further for it. Oysters were great though when they did arrive.<br/><br/>It took me a while to seek out a washroom, the pack of servers didn't seem to notice me looking lost, and they didn't give me the best directions from my table. Three servers later, I found a washroom! Very interesting washroom decor for sure... you'll understand once you see it. <br/><br/>For the prices we paid for the food, I expected better service. Gonna continue looking for a better oyster bar in the mean time.

Monday night was the cardinal gathering of our new-founded Dinner Club. Obviously I can’t take credit for the idea, but I was more than happy to be one of the chosen ones. Yes yes, it sounds super formal…but it’s really just an excuse for us to get together with friends, eat some good food, and catch up.
Sarah Jane
I too, am shocked by these negative reviews. Every single time I've been here the servers have been all extremely friendly and personable, and the food second to none. Since I "found" this place, I've told everyone that would listen how awesome it is. Thank you Rodney's for introducing me to my new favourite cider, Batch 1904!

"Oysters, Clams, & Cockles!"<br/>Beached myself at Rodney's this past weekend. Service was pleasant, prompt, and attentive. Food my group had was all really delicious (mussels, scallops, lobster roll, pasta, oysters) and prepared as comfort seafood without excessive fussing. The real star was the aforementioned oysters. It was hard to believe that we were enjoying such fresh oysters in Calgary. Served with a plethora of sauces and a healthy smack of freshly grated horse radish if you prefer to doctor your bivalves. Docked a 1/2 point as some menu items were not available to order due to selling out by 7pm. Will be back the next time the mood strikes for shellfish. 4.5 shucked half shells out of 5.

Went today for Lunch at the Bait and tackle . The service was stellar from start to finish. I was lead through the restaurant to the Bait & Tackle kitchen (you can use the side door if you prefer). <br/><br/>I was told they had just had a massive rush of people, the Corporate Lunch crowd it was 12:15pm. Despite this the cook selected a fresh piece of fish, battered it and put it in to fry as with the chips which were made fresh in front of me. I got talking to Liam the cashier and he included some tartar sauce and aioli.<br/><br/>The fish was delicious, as a Brit it is hard to find it done properly and these guys know how to do it properly. The fries were fries, not thick cut chips, but no complaints as they were good and lightly salted to perfection. The batter was light an fluffy but I found slightly salty to my taste but probably not everyone's. Slice of lemon and I took it to go. <br/><br/>The best fish and chips I've had in the city by a country mile. I would highly recommend this as a delicious lunch any day of the week and especially on a Friday! <br/><br/>Thank you Rodney's
Chad Hayden
I'm bummed out that this place can't get the service right! Great room, decent food, terrible drinks but the worst service in the city. I want to love this place but I can't!

We love seafood, especially oysters. Another Vancouver restaurant making its way to Calgary, Rodney’s has had great reviews. Fresh fish and oysters seem to make Calgarians happy. Give them a try.

Not worth it. Terrible service, forgot part of our order, lobster overcooked and did anyone notice the distasteful pics in the bathroom?! My 5 yr old asked me about them, not good.

Not worth it. Terrible service, lobster overcooked, forgot some of our order... And did anyone notice the distasteful pictures in the bathroom??!! I had my 5 year old daughter ask me about them!! Not good

Had high hopes and was disappointed. I went for lunch a few days ago and I ordered the Lobster pot pie. I was hard pressed to find more than a few pieces of lobster. It wasn't your traditional pot pie where you would expect a nice phyllo crust covering the whole pie. There was a donut shaped phyllo that was not fluffly and light, but rather thick and dense. When I tried to cut into it with my fork, it pushed all the soupy lobster filling over the side of the very small and shallow little dish. My friend ordered the shrimp succotash. He had lots of good sized shrimp in his dish. Both dishes were luke warm at best. We told the waiter and he said he would let the kitchen know. I think for close to $20 each dish, you would expect a little more and definitely hot. That was my first time at this restaurant and I won't be back. Everyone I've spoken to that's been there haven't been impressed. What I did like about it is it's a nice bright restaurant and because it was only half full, not very noisy.
Allison
This restaurant was overall disappointing. First the menu has no details on what is in the food or what sides are included. Second the food quality did not match the price. I ordered a salad and asked for the dressing on the side which they didn't do. My husbands fries weren't cooked all the way through. I don't think they will survive long in Calgary!
Hendrix
A cool ocean breeze and the smell of salt water might make this place more enjoyable. But Calgary's core can hardly offer that. Over priced and under fed in the end.
Mark.belknap
Incredible place!! - Will go back every time I'm in town. I love Rodney's! Calgary was missing an incredible seafood spot - bright, East Coast feel (as their roots are from PEI). Keep up the amazing work guys!
Daniellag
Terrible!!!!!. They had None of the wine we ordered. No clams. Terrible service. food we ended up with was average at best. Would never recommend.

This place is amazing...staff is wonderful and meals awesome....good job

The reviews don't do it justice. <br/><br/>Rodney's has a great selection of oysters! The server we had was knowledgable and professional (thank you Lochlan!). We enjoyed ourselves and the dishes we ordered (scallops & garlic shrimp) and they make a mean Caesar. The only criticism would be the music. It was way too loud in the lounge and carried over into the restaurant. We are a metropolitan city, can we not get away from classic rock?! If they stuck with blues instead of jumping around the CJ92 playlist it would have been much more enjoyable. <br/><br/>Despite the music, we will be back.

Adore this place. Rodney is a perfect addition to calgary <br/><br/>fresh food and oysters<br/><br/>perfect relaxed environment

Stumbled upon Rodney's for lunch today and was pleasantly surprised. Rodney himself came to greet us as well as explain to us the menu and overall concept of the place. The food was delightful, service impeccable and atmosphere enticing.<br/><br/>After having lived in Nova Scotia for a few years, this is the closest you'll get to the maritimes in Calgary !<br/><br/>A MUST TRY FOR ALL!

Mehhh. Had really high hopes for this place but the overall experience was not worthy of the expensive price tag. We were a big party and shared everything, ordered the tomohawk steak, pasta, scallops and had a variety of oysters. The food was just ok tasting and not 1 thing i tried made me want to come back for it, i tried about 5 different oysters and again nothing made me want more. The place itself is really cool with a nice vibe going on but i wont be back anytime soon.

Good not great.. Tried to make a reservation here and was told that the only opening was at 8:30 because they were fully booked, which was fine. Weirdly though the restaurant was not full at all when we arrived and the surrounding tables stayed empty.<br/>I get the complaints about the staff. I found our waitress had a bit of an attitude in dealing with us. She seemed rushed and like it was a bother to answer questions. Nothing to the level of complaining to someone higher but enough to make you wonder if she is always that careless.<br/><br/>Food was good but a bit expensive for the portions. However, with seafood restaurants no where near the ocean, this is expected. Disappointed because they ran out of the crab cake which was one of their white (or is it blue?) plate specials of the night. Ended up with the lobster bisque and lobster roll. Bisque was thick and rich with a good amount of meat in it. Could have used a kick of spice or stronger hit of chive to amp it up a bit but overall enjoyable. The lobster roll was a slight let down. I've definitely had better. It was on the small side and a bit dry. There was no discerning sauce or veg or garnish. The lobster was sweet and, with nothing else to battle with it, came through really clean. Ended up adding one of the oyster mignonette sauces that was available on the table to give it more dimension. The potatoes it came with were wedges and had a strong vinegar flavour. They were ok, but just too thick for my taste.<br/>I am personally not a fan of raw oysters but a friend had an assortment and raved about them. Apparently they were better than the ones she had in Vancouver, which is worth noting.<br/><br/>Overall I was content with the meal I had. I was wary at first because of the mixed reviews but I am happy I ended up trying it. However, if I was to return I would only try their bait and tackle shop (lunch/take out) which, to me, has more interesting choices.

I'm shocked by the current reviews right now. If you're a seafood lover like myself, you MUST try Rodney's. I am a regular every time I go to Van so I was super excited to come here. Yes, the service staff has trouble reciting the menu but it takes time for everyone to learn. The food itself what delicious!! Oysters were just as fresh as the ones in Van. The iced tea is handmade and is really the bomb too! You must try here!

It was my first REAL night out this past Saturday in honor of my bestie Chantalle getting married in a few short weeks. My parents were able to look after Juliette as James was at hockey tournament and us ladies hit the town in style with a little black dress theme. We started the night at Beerfest which was a tad disappointing and underwhelming. The BMO Center was FILTHY with tables piled with garbage, floors covered in Ketchup and they certainly didn't dress it up like they do for the wine festivals. We had fun hopping from one booth to the next in the mere hour we had to consume some samples as the last pour was at 8:30 pm. After that we headed to Rodney's Oyster House for a delicious meal and Bespoke for some royal treatment and dancing! We also ended the night at Singapore Sams for some table dancing, Chinese eating action. Here are some highlights. Looking forward to the big day May 17th in Colorado, Chanty!  First to arrive and fill our mini beer cups Dry sliders with a slaw... there were these trays littered everywhere with pretzel bun remnants since they were so dry. Any carpeted areas they did have were just filthy. We felt majorly overdressed but power in numbers and we knew we had nicer places to head to afterwards.  Love these letters.. and James' favorite beer is the Granville Island seasonal yum!  The ladies at Beerfest. See? No carpet and kind of barren looking? At least us ladies look nice!  Nom nom Krista the sushi monster The beautiful bride to be!  The guys in the background found it quite hilarious that they were photo bombing Mill Street booth with some lovely ladies  Off to Rodney's Oyster House in the old Tantra location on 10th Avenue and 4th Street SW. We had a wicked waiter who suggested some great Prosecco and food combinations. Mr. Sedrick. Sometimes it really pays off having a male waiter for a table of all ladies.  Oh. Man. The first oysters I have had in over a year. We got three each and each layer was a different kind. YUM! I loved

Oysters and clams are so good, so fresh, go Thursday and Friday!!!!! Comparable or better than Rodney's in Vancouver and oyster bar in New York!!!

3 times unlucky. This place is over-rated ... even at 50%.<br/>I had an terrible experience not only the first time but all 3 times I've been there. Having to send the crab cake back due to bone and cartilage or not getting our side dishes until our mains were finished was the lease of the problems with this place. <br/><br/>Yes I get it, hipsters wait staff are their thing but if you need to have the token girl with the floppy toque, the guy with the flannel and of course the lumberjack beard at least train them to have a clue about service. On two of the three occasions they fumbled through trying to explain what each oyster they brought was, let alone know anything more about them. <br/><br/>A small menu on both the food and bar is disappointing. To hear them reference how things are done in Vancouver or Toronto is ridiculous., news flash this is Calgary. I don't care if they just started selling more than wine in those locations. Manhattans, Red Bull and Burt Reynolds is not like asking for the moon and the stars. I hope this place grows up and learns what the market wants before they fail. Might be too late

Extremely unfortunate server at a very expensive restaurant. Ruined the experience for my family. I will never go back

Fresh Seafood to Share. The seafood at Rodney's Oyster House is some of the freshest you'll likely find in Alberta. Chowders, shellfish (hot and cold) and smoked fish, the menu has something for most seafood lovers.<br/><br/>While I love raw oysters, and Rodney's has a variety of great condiments ranging from curries, seafood cocktails, scotch bonnet sauce and pepper vodka, I was particularly very impressed by the feature dish. <br/><br/>I got the Atlantic Lobster Ravioli which was filled with really plump chunks of lobster. The hand made pasta ravioli was practically bursting with the meat. Combined with chunks of pork belly and topped with a sweet and tangy tomato sauce, it was definitely a satisfying choice.<br/><br/>The New England Chowder is also probably one of the best I've had in Calgary. It was loaded with clams, seafood and potatoes. It's nice and creamy, but so very filling that it's a meal on its own.<br/><br/>The restaurant is huge with a large bar in the middle and multiple floors. Ideally, it's a great place for larger groups having ample space to accommodate (with reservations) and many of the dishes set up to share. <br/><br/>Servers were also very friendly and helpful, giving us lots of information about their specialities and helping us make out dinner choices. Being there early for dinner really helped, but as soon as it got busy, staff was definitely hustling to get things done, so I understand we weren't their only focus of attention.

Terrible restaurant. Three of my friends had told of each of their bad experiences here, but I gave it a chance. Service is terrible, food is bland, and when you ask to speak to a manager they are reluctant to help you.<br/><br/>I should have listened to my friends

Great Job. Thanks JR for giving us the VIP tour and turning all 4 of us on to the Kumamoto's.

Garbage service made us walk out. First time going.<br/>We waited 45 min for a table. Ended up being sat at the bar. <br/>My place setting was the bar mat. No, it wasn't in front of the bar mat, nor was it beside the bar mat. It was on the bar mat. ON IT. It was quite comical actually. There was my seat. Right in front of the black rubber mat where the waitresses pick up glasses of crappy overpriced craft ipa and drop off dirty lipstick rimmed martini glasses, napkin and utensils and all. It was not a mistake. They fully intended on me to sit there while seating my wife and friend beside me. Sure, one could say they were trying to cram people in, but that is no excuse for such an unhygienic and disgusting display. We left immediately. I won't be returning and suggest you stay away.<br/><br/>Judging from 1/2 the other reviews I've read, I'm glad I didn't waste my money on this overpriced red lobster.

Won't be back. Went to Rodneys tonight for the first time. The music was loud and my group was unable to have a comfortable conversation. We were given 1 menu for 4 people. Our waiter was short and curt when we asked about items on the menu and he didn't have many answers. The table next to us had 4 young ladies and he gave them his full attention, you could tell where his mind was at. When we finished our meal our dirty dishes sat in front of us for close to a half hour and were never asked for more beverages. <br/><br/>The food was sub par, my wife ordered the clams and pasta and she was picking broken shells out of her plate, I didn't find a single clam in the Manhattan clam chowder, the other dishes arrived at room temp and were bland. We came hungry and left hungry, so we picked up a pizza on the way home.

Wonderful Fish & Chips.. I had take out lunch today from the "Bait & Tackle" take out bar at Rodneys Oyster House. I had the Fish & Chips special made with haddock. It was wonderful. Excellent batter, and a vey generous portion of fish inside the golden batter. Fish was cooked just perfect and was bright white and fluffy. Chips are chips, but certainly edible. I will definitely eat here again.
Sharonlp
Fish and chips was disappointing. My colleagues and I got some take out fish and chips there today (March 6, 2015). Both of our fish had a big chunks of tail with bones, not expected. I wasn't even looking and bit into it, got a mouthful of broken bones. That isn't fish and chips.<br/><br/>You want to bite into the fish and enjoy it,not bite carefully and feel around for bones, of which there is plenty and broken in this case.

Attitudes need to go away!. My girlfriend and I went out last night to Rodneys, we also tried to call but NO ONE answered! It was a Monday and roughly 20 guests were dining at 6:30pm. I was looking forward to it as I have dined many times at the Vancouver location. We weren't greeted right away but eventually asked " how can I help you?" you can help us with a table maybe, there was no greeting no hello or welcome. The bad taste in my mouth started at the door but then continued with the server. He was a supercilious, mid 30's, male that laughed when we ordered the periwinkles and proceeded to tell us how the ocean is frozen where they dive. I am sorry we ordered something on your menu when it wasn't in season, maybe, perhaps, it should be removed until it is. Regardless, we ordered two courses: the appetizers were delivered in 5mins and not soon after the hot soup and tartare came our entrees were served. I was confused as to why he was moving my freshly buttered bread to the top of the table when I was about to dip it in my chowder. It was like he meant to have the second course come out right after.<br/>I looked at my friend and asked "did this just happen?"<br/>She was pretty shocked while trying to enjoy her tuna tartare and we tried to see if we could get the managers attention. He was busy so I made eye contact with our server. I asked him why is this out already, he was soo defensive and rude! He responds very harshly and said "because I ordered it", I said we are trying to enjoy our appetizers and just received them, he then tactlessly said<br/>"I am sorry for assuming you would be done". I was speechless!!!!!<br/>I asked to speak to the manager at which point the server rolled his eyes then looked at me like I had 4 heads and turned away. The manager came right away after speaking to the server and gave the excuse that the server was from Toronto where everything is more rushed...<br/>We were then served by a young non hipster that was genuine and professional. We found out that they tip pool but still left 25% for the new server.<br/>All I have to say is own up to your mistakes and stop making excuses, it will go far with your guests.<br/>We will never be back!

Awful Service, Mediocre Food. Went out for dinner and was super disappointed. We waited more than twenty minutes for our drink order, then another thirty for our server to return to take our food order. Our appetizers of oysters came after our mains and were incorrect. The mains are a stretch to be called that, incomplete and expensive. While we don't mind restaurants that have you order your main and sides separately - maybe inform your patrons on the menu and have sides to order! The bill came with items we never ordered or received. Super annoying to pay as well, we had to flag another server to return with a machine. Total time for a two course meal was 2.75 hrs, unacceptable. Note, restaurant wasn't slammed at the 8pm sitting. Note to the restaurant management - hire people who can shuck 12 oysters in less than two hours. <br/>Over terrible night out - we will NOT be returning.

Awesome experience!. Everything about this restaurant is fabulous. The space is bright, spacious, unique, elegant and yet comfortable. It works for a large group, eating communally, or having a quiet lunch/dinner by yourself. The food is excellent, portions perfect, and of the highest quality. The wine list is superb. if I had to pick favourites it would be the oysters (always fresh, fresh, fresh), the New England Chowder, lobster rolls and a glass or two of Astrolabe to accompany - so delicious! The staff is great too - each with unique and authentic personalities. You can tell they really love what they do and care about their customers. I'll be back as often as possible and recommend it to all. Congratulations on the new launch!!

My first experience at Rodney's was fantastic. My server told me some funny jokes, smiled a lot and was generally pleasant. I had the mussels as an appetizer, and then the crab. My server was very informative about where the seafood came from. The mussels were from pei, they were huge and delicious. The sourdough bread was excellent for dipping in the mussel sauce. The crab was 3lbs as I asked for a big one. My server screamed and giggled as she brought it over, definitely the most exciting part. Now you don't have to see it alive if you choose not to. This definitely added to me experience though. I ended the evening with the lime pie. It was light, sweet and I wanted more. Nothing bad to say about this place. Read some of the reviews and didn't understand it. Maybe worth another go for all who weren't happy the first time.

Over-hyped & overpriced for the quality of food and service.. My friend and I went there on a Monday night to have dinner at six. I called them to reserve a table since their online booking system did not let me. I called twice on the interval of 15mins each and nobody picked up. So we decided just to do a walk in a peep at how busy it was. When we walked in, it's was pretty average, the hostess looked at me and asked if I had a reservation and I said that I tried calling them to reserve a table. She merely just shrugged and said "we just ignore our phone calls because it's pretty busy". But the thing was it wasn't... so she proceeded to ignored the next phone call ringing to prove her point while we were walked to our table.<br/><br/>When we were sat down, our waiter dropped off our water and just left it there, so we just poured it ourselves. About 30mins in waiting for our food, she ran back and forth 4 times to tell us that certain things were not available on the menu. Then FoH manager walked by her i believe and our table. I guess she'd realized that she never gave us bread, and she said aloud "Let me get you 'more' bread" but the thing is, we never got bread in the first place. Having her say that made us kind of disappointed that she wasn't an honest server. I wouldn't have mind if she simply just owned up to her mistakes... <br/><br/>The food was mediocre, I wouldn't say anything was extremely fascinating about it. I ordered a lobster and the heated butter came with it. Our server just simply dropped the butter off at my side of the table with the match and just left without lighting it. So I took the match and lit it myself with the oil candle that was on the table, setting half the match on fire. I'm pretty sure our server saw me light it and just ignored us when we needed assistance. When it came to clearing table and plates that we no longer used, our server just simply walked pass us while we piled our plates and used utensils on one side of our table. It got cluttered and really uncomfortable to eat anywhere. Luckily the two of us were at a table of 4. <br/><br/>For the price we paid for dinner, our service was rather disappointing. We still tipped her 18%... but I don't think we're going to come back here.

Beautiful Space, disappointing food.. The space itself was gorgeous and inviting and the staff were very friendly and attentive. Unfortunately we were very disappointed with the food. My friend wanted a simple dirty gin martini and they stated they don't make them which is very surprising. We found the menu lacked hearty options, we were looking for something with carbs...it was hard to find. We ended up having the lobster roll which was disappointed. very bland, not flavor, no sauce and only a few shreds of lettuce on the roll. I would not spend $21 dollars on that ever again. Great place to go for a drink and oysters, but not somewhere I will go for a meal ever again.

Total disappointment. Bad service, uninspired (small menu, small portions) food. I have never had to raise my hand and wave until wait staff acknowledge me. I just wanted another drink. Wait, there's a condiment tray for oysters? We did not get one. Rodney please close this down, rethink this and try again. :( should have read the reviews first.

BIG LETDOWN!. We booked the reservation a couple weeks prior to last night for our Birthdays and was super excited to go as we are both huge seafood fans. When we arrived to find tons of people, we knew we were in for a fine meal. once seated we waited a while before our server arrived. We were offered water... Hello Friday night, bring on the beverages! That took about 20 minutes for them to get to our table. After discussing with the waitress over the menu we were shocked to find our mains were of appetizer proportions. For a pasta dish to arrive without any sauce and a few clams placed on top, Really! A scallop dish with a few vegetables hidden underneath. Really! So after we ate we asked the waitress when we're we getting the rest? For the expense of each dish there needs to be more to the meal than that. Leaving disappointed and hungry we had to go next door for nachos . Our overall review is slow service, minimal food portions for big money, no value and only average taste. Sorry we wouldn't go back!
Pamela61422
Unbeatable. We have been there twice in two weeks and continue to marvel at the passion for quality food and people (staff). This isn't a chain restaurant experience - it is original and to be savored. Get there soon!
Brittong
Smallest portions ever. Slow service, waitress didn't know how to open the bottle of wine. Main courses really don't come with anything other than what you order. For example I ordered the large garlic shrimp. I,received 7 shrimp and a bit of arugula. My friend ordered pasta with clams. The pasta just came out of the water with absolutely no additional flavouring like butter or garlic or anything and then some clams were added on top of it.The other meals were small portions as well. So for 4 of us the bill was $280 and it just felt like we had appetizers . So we left and went down the street to the national and ordered beer and nacho's ..cause we all were still hungry. Would never go back again, not worth the price, service, quality or quantity.

Tasty Food, Horrible Service. We went with a group of 8. Took half an hour to get the first drink. Everyone ordered the oysters they wanted and only one plate came out missing about a dozen oysters. We asked about them and the waiter said they were on the way. 40 minutes later no oysters, and our entrées started to come out. We cancelled the remaining oysters. Half of our entrees were missing as he forgot to punch them in, so half of us ate and the other half waited another half an hour. We were there for close to 3 hours, were only served 2 drinks and the waiter was quite rude. When we asked him about the wait time for the oysters all he could say is "I am not the one shucking the oysters so I have no idea". The food we did receive was delicious and I would like to say I would go back, but perhaps with only 2 of us and in about 6 months time.. let the growing pains end.
Blueberry150
Great ambience inside the restaurant, but that's pretty much the only thing this place has going for it. Food and drinks were so-so, but pricey for the portion size. The waitress we had was the worst part of the whole dinning experience. She came across as cold and unfriendly and our group felt intimidated to ask her questions. On top of that, she failed to ask if we wanted the half size portion or the full-size and just assumed we wanted the latter. Diners please beware of this! You could end up paying more than what you were looking to spend. I expected quite a bit from this place and left disappointed. Probably won't be back anytime soon.

Great evening out!. Decided to try this restaurant as a part of Big Taste YYC, we really enjoyed it!! The menu selection was really well put together and everything was wonderfully delicious!! Absolutely loved the lobster ravioli and braised veal cheek!! My only point of feedback would be that a couple of the courses were a bit on the lukewarm side. Service was excellent, server was incredibly friendly and attentive!!! Great first impression, we'll definitely be back!
Calvin_louie
Terribad!. The staff was inattentative, the floor manager was more or less aloof and the food was mediocre at best. The only unique thing is their weird/creepy washroom decor and setup. Save your money and go to Red Lobster, the food quality is comparable, but at least the portions will be larger and the staff there are friendlier!

SAVE YOUR TIME AND SAVE YOUR MONEY! <br/>We went last week for a birthday celebration with a large group of 16 people. We were looking forward to trying a new restaurant and we heard positive things about the Rodney Oyster House chain. The overall service experience was EXTREMELY DISSAPOINTING! The waiter did not write down the orders correctly, he combined orders, drinks and entrees were randomly placed on the table of 16 people, the waiter did make an effort to match the entree to each guests order, he brought drinks that did not belong to anyone at the table and it took 1.5 hours for all the food to come out! After speaking to the manager, we were told that they would comp us with half a dozen oysters. However, we NEVER received our comped oysters and the manager was NEVER to be seen again. We were charged the standard 18% gratuity for a large group but it was definitely not deserved. The quality of the food was mediocre and it was not worth the wait and hassle. Overall, we do not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Rodneys. I'm prefacing this with "I'm not an oyster fan". I'm giving them a try, some are ok - but most kinda sketch me out. I went to an Oysters 101 class where we had a few different types, paired with wine/beer. The class was informative, approachable and the guy teaching it was super friendly and fun (sitting at the bar - the rest of the staff and service were also great). We had a few different menu items and well, and everything was delicious. I'll be back for sure and would recommend to others.

Rude Hostess and Slow Service. Our group of 6 had a 6:00 dinner reservation and when we checked in, the hostess asked if we would be done by 8:15 so that they could have the table for the next group of people. I'd never, ever been asked that before and we were all quite put off by that.<br/>Our waitress had no clue about menu and drink items and could not answer our questions very well.<br/>All that being said though, the food was great, and the bathrooms are very.....unique. You just have to see them to believe them.

Customer service lacking. Went to Rodney's with a group of friends. There were 10 of us. I understand that when there is a group, everything will take a bit more time. However, I had to order my drink four times before I got it. The server did not even acknowledge that I ordered the previous times. Everyone ordered oysters but they all came out on one plate and we had to ask which was which. We were short a dozen oysters and were told that someone at the table probably ate them (even though all the shells were still on people's plates). When the main dishes came, 1 was missing and again, we were told that it was our fault and that my friend didn't order (even though it was written down). We talked to the manager and she apologized and told us she hope we understand that they haven't been opened long but we'd get free oysters from it (they never came). The food was delicious but service was lacking.

I was really excited when Rodney's opened up in Calgary.<br/>Not as good as one in Yaletown in Vancouver,<br/>but I keep going back because theres no restaurant like this in Calgary.<br/>Be prepared to spend some time waiting.<br/>The food comes out really really really slow.<br/>The oysters are very fresh. I like the smaller ones<br/>- my favorite is raspberry point.

I had dinner at Rodneys last night and it was fantastic . Their seafood was super fresh and the best I've had in Calgary . I met their Chef Robin and he was delightful and was very welcoming . He recommended their fresh halibut and it was a great choice . Thanks chef ! And we can wait to go back !!

Terrible Service. Friday night dinner at 6 PM. We were a group of 8 (4 couples), split the bill evenly and came out to $75/person before tip without desert or coffee. We shared some oysters (not kushi because they ran out by 6:30 PM and no recommendation for something else), the smoked tuna, one main dish each (which was VERY small) and 2 drinks each. Left hungry and grumpy. Rodney's you were a let down after a long week at work!<br/><br/>From the front door to the last moment, it was a bad experience. The service is very very bad! Basically nothing here can justify the $$$. The room is beautiful, but that's about it. You can get better and cheaper food/drinks at a dozen of other places in the area: 10 ave, 17 ave or Stephen ave. <br/><br/>We got eye rolls, strange comments from the staff when asking about the menu, and a manager that was nice and apologized when we shared this feedback, but at that point we were leaving anyway. I get it, it's a new place and needs to work out the kinks, BUT not on my dollar. Too bad, your other locations in Toronto and Vancouver are quite nice!
KT
The food was decent, the clam chowder might be the best ever, but then again i've only had clam chowder a half a dozen times in my life. The service is horrible. There was 18 of us, and every time our food came out, the server would just yell out what he is bringing and expect us to claim it. Secondly, we all ordred oysters off of their menu, and they brought it all out on a huge platter, expecting us to pass the single platter across the table picking out which ones we ordered.
AQ
It's only OKAY, there are other new restaurants are way better.. The oysters are fresh. But their dinner menu sucks. Also, I ordered the Clam Paster and they forgot to put salt. I told the server and he confirmed with the kitchen and came back to me and said "yes they forgot to put salt." But then guess what, instead of making my dish, he just brought me some sea salt! I didn't come to a restaurant and paid $21 for just a clam pasta and get treated like this. And of course they included in the bill. Other dishes we are okay but nothing extraordinary. I would not recommend going here.

Outstanding Food, Most Awkward Bathroom I've Ever Seen. I was truly amazed with how delicious and fresh the seafood was, it is very impressive that they are able to source such great quality products in Calgary. The room also looked beautiful and they did manage to pull off the marine theme, which they have unfortunately taken a bit too far with the bathroom design. The sinks are way too low, knee height low - and I am short, I can only imagine how a 6 foot tall man would feel - and look like big tubs you would clean fish in (or could as well be mistaken for urinals). So impractical and I suggest not letting the water run too fast as you will probably end up wet! That alone isn't that big of a deal, but the wall dividing the gentlemen's and ladies' rooms is actually non existent. The sinks are back to back and there are mirrors hanging over them with spaces in between so you can clearly see into the other side. You can imagine my surprise when a man appeared in front of me as I was washing my hands! Bathrooms set aside, the drink list is three cocktails long and since the bar isn't stocked with anything else but basic well liquors and garnishes, they can't make anything else for you. Oysters pair best with sparkling wine. Rodney's is the oyster bar with the shortest list I have seen, and only has one by the glass option - a cava. The rest of the wine selection is also limited. Espresso beverages are not available since they chose not to get a machine. Those are all things that the Calgary market appreciates and I believe that by making improvements in those areas, they could be quite successful. Until then, I probably won't be back

Some fine tuning expected but an overall good experience. Were there late Saturday afternoon into early evening and it was quiet to begin with but really started to pick up towards the end. Overall good experience. We had to order 3 wines to find one they had in stock so hoping they get their stocking issues fixed up and it wouldn't hurt to expand the wine list a little :) . A few items from the food menu weren't in stock either. Food was excellent and we had quite a selection. Service was just above ok; the best service we had was from the guys in the back that brought out oysters & meals. Definitely check your bill when you get it. Ours had an extra bottle of wine tacked onto it (which I noticed and they rectified) and 8 extra oysters (which I didn't notice until the next day). Going back and am sure they're just getting their footing.

Hubby and I went to try Rodneys and it was mediocre at best. We ordered raw oysters, seared scallops, streamed garlic and butter mussels and clam chowder. Everything was lukewarm. The plates were brought out cold. Given the price point of the food, I would expect the plates to be hot (with the exception of the raw oysters). Service was below par. Our waitress gave us the bill and stood there and waited for me to pay. It seemed like we were being rushed out of the restaurant when there was barely anyone there at 1pm on a Saturday afternoon. I would go back in 6 months after management improves processes. 5/10.

Gave it a second chance. So our first experience at Rodneys was awful. In addition to the food being incredibly slow, when we asked our server for the price of the lobster dish, he replied "Twenty eight dollars". When we got the bill, it turns out this was a per pound price, and he'd picked a 2.5 lb lobster without asking us anything about the size. We brought this up and he admitted he'd messed up but wasn't willing to correct the bill.<br/><br/>It left a bad taste in my mouth so I emailed their front of house contact, Karen. She apologized and invited us to come back for oysters on the house. I made a reservation and we went back for Round 2. It was fine, although no one had communicated to our server that they oysters were supposed to be on-the-house, so it was a little awkward when we got the bill. Angela definitely was an improvement in service over what we'd had the first time. <br/><br/>At the end of the day, if you want fresh, interesting oysters, go to Rodneys. For all their other dishes, the price is too far out there to justify it for me. If the service and attention to detail was better, that might make up for it, but it isn't quite there yet.<br/><br/><br/>-----07 Feb, 2015-----<br/><br/>Give 'em a chance. My two friends and I visited Rodney's on Thursday night. We ordered the chowder, oysters, smoked tuna, and a lobster.<br/><br/>The food was good. Oysters were perfect, very fresh and well shucked with a great selection. Smoked tuna was like sashimi, very buttery and flavourful. The chowder, though pricey, was filling and satisfyingly chunky with clams and potato. The lobster was tasty, although a bit cold. <br/><br/>The service was horrendous. We were fine with waiting for a table, and the bread and conversation got us through the hour long wait for our food. However, when we ordered the lobster, we asked how much it cost as it was labeled "Market Price". Our server responded with "28 Dollars". Unfortunately, when we got our bill the lobster came out to $70, apparently $28 per pound. When we pointed out to the server that he hadn't said "per pound" or asked us how large a lobster we wanted, he admitted he'd made a mistake but was unwilling to make any adjustments. We paid the bill and left.<br/><br/>After emailing their manager, I was assured that this was not standard procedure and invited to come back for oysters on the house. The manager's prompt reply and eagerness to make it right gives me hope that the service at this restaurant will eventually be fantastic. <br/><br/>Give it a month or so before making judgements on their service. Until then, visit their awesome take-out window for lunch.

Good Oysters Bad Service. The Oysters were delicious and the oyster shuckers were friendly and nice! The actual servers though are a different story. We went there thinking it was a chain of the Rodney's in Vancouver. We asked our server and she was very snotty with her answer "we are a chain but are nothing like the Vancouver Rodney's" with an attitude that new customers or any customers didn't need. At that point I wanted to just walk out but we decided to stay and have a drink and a few oysters. We walked over to an empty part of the bar, when that rude server came back and told us we couldn't sit there and that we had to be "seated" at the bar because they treat the bar like tables.. Again with that snotty attitude. So she took us back to the entrance only for us to wait for 10 and have us "seated" in the very seats at the bar we were sitting before! The service was ridiculous and terrible. The owners should clean house and start over with new servers or people aren't going to return for their delicious oysters.

Service run by amautera. I have never been to a restaurant where I have been shielded out from behind the counter as to why I was there. Then left waiting for 10 to 15 minutes while I watched others being seated at tables because I wanted to see if your bar that was mostly empty. The worst service I've ever experienced. Need my company I am ploys will not expensive single dollar at Rodneys Calgary they have failed us

Terrible service. Our somewhat snobby server kept us waiting forever while she hung out by the bar and even rolled her eyes and scoffed at me when I asked a question about their very vague menu. Also the menu was way overpriced. I will not be back.

The atmosphere, service and oysters were incredible. However the sauces for the oysters were left open in small jars with spoons in them for each new group of people being seated. It's a concern that the people seated before us may have used the spoons to taste the sauces and returned them back to the jars. Especially if they were drunk and not careful. It's unsanitary and unhygienic. I am surprised in an upscale restaurant this is allowed. The sauces should be kept in the back and newly placed in fresh bowls for anyone ordering oysters.
