Review Calypso's Taverna - Calgary

Jose Quiroz
Cozy restaurant, relaxed atmosphere, great service and superb food. You can feel everything is made from scratch. The portions are generous and well presented. Highly recommended.

I can't believe it has taken me this long to review this gem! The staff Is always incredible and I regularly crave their Aegean lasagna. This is the perfect place for date nights or celebrations 💕

My families favourite Greek food hands down. The portions are very generous, flavours are rich and we keep going back. Our go to choice is the Combination Platter for 2 and the Athenian Pasta. The lamb with the platter is amazing! The price may seem high at first glance but the portions make it well worth it. Our combo platter and pasta order lasts our family 2 meals (2 adults, 1 tween and a toddler) On top of all this the staff is so pleasant

Ordered the kleftiko (lamb) and the Mousaka. The lamb was very tender and juicy. Large portions for both dishes.

Best Greek restaurant in town. I've introduced friends and family to this place over the years and they've all become regulars like us. Always great food and service! My favorite dish is the Moussaka and Crystal can't get enough of the tzatziki that comes with the pita bread. Make sure you save room for the Ekmek and Bougatsa - they are amazing desserts!

Beautiful dinner we had! We had roasted lamb and lamb souvlaki. The food is overall delicious. From the salad, to the rice, potatoes and the meat. Everything was perfectly prepared and cooked with much TLC. You can tell they are proud of what they do. The service was super fast, efficient and very friendly. The atmosphere is warm, inviting and clean. Highly recommend and we will definitely be back!

Mind blowing experience! Amazing flavours, huge portions! As our amazing waitress said "if you leave a Greek restaurant hungry you never come back" it's next morning and I'm still full! Happy we tried out Calypso's. Demeter would be proud!

Very warm and cozy. The owners are very hospitable. Steak is a beautiful baseball cut. The appetizer platter was very filling. The chicken Artemis is absolutely precious. The Moussaka was very nicely prepared. My kid liked the lamb.. As long as we live in Calgary we will be coming back here. Love this place.

Best calimari I have had in calgary — hands down. Not chewy or overcooked; very tender, lightly battered, great flavour. My husband said his lamb was “the best I’ve EVER had.” His was fall off the bone and he loved the flavour. The appy platter for 2 fed 4 of us EASILY. If it were for 2 ppl you would not need dinner. No joke — it’s that huge.

Our only comment would be to season the steak more. It was didn’t have much flavour. Everything else was amazing! Overall we were incredibly satisfied.

The Greek food here is very good! I absolutely loved the grape leaf wraps and of course the saganaki which is done properly and lit on fire at the table. Very friendly service and nice, Greek atmosphere.
Definitely a return visit in my future 😊

I just had a great lunch here today finding parking to try it out was a bit of a problem cause parking lot is not very big and was fairly busy. I got the lemon and rice soup and the soutzoukakia which is meatballs on rice cover in a tomato sauce. The soup tasted fine just seemed like in needed something just not sure what. The meatballs were very good were fairly large served withota of rice and tomato sauce was delicious brought the dish together.

We were craving for Greek food, not any Greek food like "OPA!' We wanted Saganaki and i wanted Taramosalata. We decided to try Calypso's on Center Street. We ordered the Saganaki (Flaming Cheese), Dolmades (Stuffed Grape Leaves), Trio Dip (Tzatziki, Taramosalata, Hummus) served with warm pita bread and Spanakopita. First off the saganaki was the highlight of the meal this time. I found the dips were ok. I have had better elsewhere. The best Taramosalata is now being served at 2 Greek Girls at the Farmers Market. The Dolmades were served warm but was so over whelmed with lemon juice. I could not taste the natural flavours of the Dolmades, every bite i took i felt i was taking a teaspoon of pure lemon juice. Spanakopita was flaky and was good. Overall this place has a great atmosphere it feels like your neighborhood restaurant, the staff is super friendly and welcoming. However i was not at all impressed by the food. I would just have 2 Greek Girls food if i want good greek food.

All about trying new places this trip. Aunt was feeling Greek so we decided to try Calypso’s Taverna. We came on a Saturday evening around 7:00pm and there was maybe a handful of tables. So dead (thanks again Stampede). They have a TV and were playing Wheel of Fortune. Haven’t seen that show in years.

Went here Saturday night. There were 5 of us. My daughter wanted Greek food and not the standard Opa fare. I had Moussaka. It was good as it had just a hint of cinnamon. Nice large piece and as always I finished it all. Too bad there was no place to break the plate.

We've gone here many times as it is close to where we live. Service is always friendly. We only order appetizers to I cannot speak to the quality of their main plates. We've tried their meatballs, Greeks ribs (appetizer), stuffed calamari, mussels, saganaki, Greeks salad, grilled calamari (they did this for us upon request instead of fried calamari), and sausage. All is very good. There is also a lovely dessert that is filled with a type of custard that is in a flaky fillo dough and served warm.

Haven't been here for a couple years. The food quality has been improved a lot. I ordered beef souvlaki and it tasted juicy. I love it. Will come back again.

We headed out for Greek dinner with some neighbourhood friends. We’d been to Santorini’s across the street and had heard good things about Calypso’s so we thought we’d try something new. The atmosphere is warm and cozy with booths and tables and a TV for those who can’t leave home without knowing what the score is. It was nice to see a list of decently priced wines – from $33 to $60, most were between $33 and $44 I think. We ordered a Malbec to share.

Loved this place. Friendly and accommodating staff, lovely food and reasonable prices. I live right by this place but never noticed it. It's a gem though, and I'll certainly be going back!
Jsmith
Over cooked and salty. I don't know if their chef smokes or they don't understand the concept of a little goes a long way but if one thing was too salty something else was bland, limp and over cooked. Based on the reviews we had such high expectation but our first visit will be our last. Too bad
Lindy H
Can't stand that they stick animals on a spit! Disgusting! Would never go there. Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Consistently excellent food and service. Unsurpassed quality and value. Food is always nicely prepared and delicious. Family run. Restaurant has a very casual atmosphere. Highly recommended.

The Kleftiko is an amazingly tender lamb with a zesty flavour. Soft and tasty it's a slow roasted dish made with love from this Greek family restaurant on Centre Street.

A really busy spot for a weekend evening, it's a nice escape for a nice Greek meal. Whether you live in the neighbourhood or drive from across the city, Calypso offers a nice environment with some solid, well-portioned dishes.

Prices hover around the $20 price range for an entree, but the Greek food is made with love and care. Definitely a spot to try out if you want to explore potentially the best Greek food in Calgary.
Weiyuan Liang
Makes me so disappointed for the food and services. The food so salty and they don't let me change. Worse place ever. Never never never come back again.

I still thank the (Greek) gods for my chance encounter with Calypso's Taverna. I was on my way to another restaurant when I decided to give this one a try... And boy did it not disappoint. A friend and I ordered the appetizer platter and a large Greek salad to share. We were blown away by the portion sizes and the freshness of the ingredient (special shoutouts for the cumin meatballs). As our server put it "If you leave a Greek restaurant feeling hungry, it is not a good restaurant." Calypso's Taverna truly had it all: delicious, authentic and affordable food, a warm atmosphere and amazing staff.

First and last time ever eating here. My husband and I both got food poisoning after eating take out from this restaurant, definitely would not recommend anyone eat here!
Paige
Great dining experience at Calypso's, the service is fantastic! The food is great and came out hot and fresh. I ordered the seafood lasagna and the portion was huge, I had to take half of it home. My husband ordered the lamb shoulder and really enjoyed it. The waitress we had was nice and welcoming, she made us feel like family, she even gave us a free dessert (to go- we were so full!) for no reason other than she wanted us to try it. Great place, even better food and top notch service. We will definitely be back.

Amazing food and great service. All around a great restaurant. Our dining experience here was everything we hoped it would be. We look forward to returning with friends.

We want for dinner last night with a few friends and being Father's Day it was busy we did not have a reservation but they found room for us. Our appetizers and mains came out quickly an were delicious our waitress was very courteous and attentive,we will definitely be back.
Calgary Diner
My family walked out from dinner after a disrespectful and hostile waitress, whom I assume is not a member of the owner family. In our entire life living in this city, this was the first time.

After a very long wait, during which time the waitress did not come by (e.g. to take drinks order, explain the delay), she came to confirm the number of order, which she had mistaken and we corrected. I asked if she had forgotten the order, as it seemed to be the case. She gave an angry response, argued to bring proof, and walked off while I was still speaking. She did not come back.

After a while, we got up to leave. However, we spoke to the owner, a gentle and concerned lady who asked us to stay. Although we appreciated her sincerity, there was no desire to stay. Especially when, even during this time, the waitress confronted us angrily.

We would like to visit again, but probably won't be for a long time, which is very unfortunate.
Peter L
What a pleasant surprise! Food was fresh and delicious. We shared the Appetizer Platter for Two (would have been fine for 4) and a great "authentic" Greek Salad and we were stuffed! Didn't think Calamari got that big!! We'll be back for sure! Thank you!
Allie Marie Percival-Wightman
Great service, really excellent Greek food and a pleasant dining atmosphere. You definitely have to *like* Greek food to enjoy Calypso's, but if you do, it's an excellent spot. Try the moussaka and the ek mek for dessert!
Not Nathan
Not much of a review, as the experience was neither bad or great. Chicken souvlaki came out quickly and was a little dry. Used a lot of Tzatziki to overcome the dryness. Disappointed with them using frozen beans and parboiled rice. Might go back, but not anytime soon.
Tony
This is my favourite restaurant in Calgary, and has been since 2008. The service is always great, and the food is amazing (especially the lunch menu). No matter where I am in the city, I will always make the drive for the best Greek food money can buy.
James
Great authentic Greek food. Very welcoming service, superb food that fulfilled all of our Greek cravings and very reasonably priced.
Highly recommended!
Jimmy Gi
Amazing food friendly service. We were four people and we all had something different. I had the kleftiko lamb it melted in my mouth. My girlfriend had the seafood souvlaki she loved it. The other two had the chicken and beef souvlaki and they were both very happy. I wish I had more than one potato but there was a lot of food. I had the avgolemono with my meal and it was good but peppery. Everyone else had the Greek salad and loved it. Thank you Maria the service was great!
Nlepore
SO FANTASTIC. I don't usually write reviews but this restaurant was so good, i just finished leftovers from my dinner for my lunch and I can't help but praise this place. Great service, best pita I have ever had all around great experience. I will be returning :)
Mariahrieger
I wouldn't go back. Calamari was too rubbery to chew. The rice tasted like nothing but strong unbearable lemon. The chicken was just so dry and for the amount of money you are paying its disappointing.
Ammy
Meh. Had dinner here the other night. The Greek salad and lemon soup were very good, but I was disappointed with the souvlaki meal. They use frozen vegetables and the potato was undercooked. Other negative is that the entrees took a while to come out. So all in all it was meh. Probably won't be back.

Always great! And a special thanks.... My boyfriend and I went to Calypso's for the umpteenth time for a yummy, quick meal and to nervously pass the time...we were waiting to hear back from our realtor about an offer we made on a house (We apologized in advance to our waitress if we got the call while she was at our table!). Anyways, we GOT THE HOUSE, and she was jumping up and down with us, sharing in the excitement! She even brought us ouzo shots to celebrate the special moment. It was such an impressive gesture, and I will never forget it...going above and beyond like that is a rarity in this city. THANK YOU!

The food at Calypsos is always excellent, greek salad is fresh, and service is prompt (and easy front parking!). OPA! :) OH, and the Belly Dancers are tons of fun!
Bagavid
Under-rated for lunch. Quiet. Decent parking. Fast. Nice folks. Reasonable prices. Great good. Staff treat you well. Check it out.

Fantastic!. Was my first time to eat here. i will definitely say the food was fantastic! my server was very helpful. will be back!!
Enjoyfood
Enjoyable good food. I have been here a couple times and have always felt happy with the overall service and food. The wait staff is good as is the food. Both times I came I tried the Kleftiko and different appetizers. Why change a thing if it isn't broken? The only thing I didn't really enjoy was the calamari here. But I am very picky in regards to Calamari and almost cringe ordering it from any restaurant since it is so easy to under or over cook and that perfect zone can vary from individual to individual. Other than that though I really enjoyed this place and will be back for sure.

Been a few times now. The service and wait times for the food are struggling. Waited an hour and a half for dinner. Not worth it for the greasy plate, that ended up in front of me.
Michael
A group of 12 went to this place today and it was amazing. The food was delicious and large portions for a great price. It was a great Greek experience.
Libscoy
The mussels ROCK!. I was at Calypso's for the first time, and I will be back for sure. The food was fantastic (mussels).

Great atmosphere for a family gathering or birthday party.
SuperHero
Left Underwhelmed. The clamari appetizer was delicious but the Moussaka and lamb mains were heavy and oily. The meat in the Moussaka was seasoned well but the eggplant in it just leeched more oil onto my plate. The veggie accompaniment was awful, mushy previously frozen vegetables cooked to the point where they've lost their bright colours and any semblance of texture. Tried the lamb, it was tender but barely seasoned and also somewhat fatty. Even the greek salad was too oily, covered in too much oil, not enough vinegar and there was no seasoning whatsoever on the salad. Overall a meh dinner- I had expected way more considering the reviews and high rating on Urbanspoon. Seems like people who prefer somewhat boring flavours really like this place.

Fabulous. Ate here on sat sept 21 at approx 1930 hrs.
Upon arriving we were some what concerned with the appearance of the outside, it looked more typical of a regular strip mall "greasy spoon" that fear evaporated upon entering. The interior was warm n comfortable with some obligatory "Greek God heads".
We were seated and served promptly.
The menu is very well balanced with a flavor that would accommodate anyone, unless you wanted pizza :)
We started with the calamari, $9 and what a deal, the best I've had this side of the border.
The entrees all include rice, potato and vegetable.
We had the moussaka $18., WOW incredible best we've had in recent memory. Excellent balance of seasoned meat, potato and béchamel sauce, the rice and potato were average, but that didn't effect the over all value of the meal or our experience.
Service was prompt, great balance not overly or under attentive.
This restaurant will be a regular stop when I'm Calgary

Go with an empty stomach. I've frequented Calypso's with friends and family over the years and I've never left unsatisfied. From the outside it's a pretty unassuming restaurant, but the inside is filled with cozy booths and a few eye-catching Mediterranean decorations. Service is always friendly and polite though once in a blue moon it may be slow, but we've always had someone apologize if there was a wait. Their menu hasn't changed much and while I usually go for chicken the last time I went for seafood and I was not disappointed. The scallops and shrimp were a decent size and the salmon was tender. I was amazed at how much rice I actually got on my plate. Appetizers might seem expensive at first glance, but wait till you actually get them. They're more like a full-sized portion of food! The appetizer platter for 2 is probably more suited for 4 if that gives you an indication of portion size and it also gives you a great idea of what they offer. I love the lemon chicken soup with rice and the roasted potatoes that come with the main dishes. I always want to snag dessert, but I'm almost always way too full to do so.

Since i'm half Greek with no Greek family in the area, it's so nice to find a great Greek place to eat. The restaurant is very clean and extremely relaxing, which is a huge plus.

Husband and I shared calamari (cooked perfectly) and the Greek Club which is a new twist on a club sandwish. The bacon on the club was nice, thick, and smokey. GREAT bacon. The chicken and donair meat where yummy, and it all some how worked together. GREAT pita. Trust me, if you order this be ready to share it since it's so big. They use steak cut fries which were cooked just right. I asked them to make sure to put oregano and lemon on it (Love love love it that way) and of course they did it to perfection.

Both servers were beautiful people who had a true love for people and what they were doing. That is something I always feel is part of the true Greek dining experience...the staff truly care about the food they serve you.

New favorite Greek place, and I cannot wait to try the rest of the menu. OPA!

Food is pretty cheap and very tasty. However was not impressed by the hostess. She literally greeted us with "what do you want?"
Mark Wood
Good atmosphere, attentive and knowedgable service. We tried the shared appetizers for two and it was a good balance of flavours. Roasted pig entree was excellent and the quail was nicely done. With soup or salad coming with the mains, definitely arrive hungry as he portions are large!

Awesome Greek Food. First time and Calypso's as I am new to the neighbourhood and had a great meal! The halibut and pork souvlaki special were awesome.
Dawn
A hidden gem on Centre Street!. Friendly staff, delicious food and reasonable prices. ... what a nice surprise and a place I will enjoy for many years to come!

Favourite Greek restaurant in town! Have always had great service and food whenever we've come here. First time we went, it looked kind of sketchy, its in a strip mall in the NE... but was very pleasantly surprised when we got inside. Usually get the spanakopita and even though its an appetizer, it's enough for a meal for me. The salads are usually fresh and tasty and I had a delicious lentil soup there once (was the soup of the day, I hope they bring it back!). Definitely recommend this place.
Miss Marionette
First time here. The sta.... First time here.

The staff started us off with a free shot or Ouzo. Ordered the calamari and Mousaka. Both absolutely wonderful.
Service was great. Always attending to our needs. Will definitely come back here.
Lynn
Delicous and Pleasant. We went as a family group of six adults, loved the appetizer platter for two that easily provided a variety of apps for everyone. The moussaka was delicious - and there was enough for leftovers for lunch. The lamb was moist and well seasoned, and the ribs were marvelous. We were surprised by the quality and variety of the desserts. Ek Mek is my new favorite! Our waitress was the right amount of attentive, and we felt welcomed to sit and visit. It was a perfect Thursday night dinner out. We'll be back!

Amazing restaurant! Everything was fantastic! The drinks were amazing, the food was INCREDIBLE, the desert was delicious, the service was impeccable and the atmosphere was very relaxing. I enjoyed every minute and will definitely be back! Not to mention that the price was very good for the type of restaurant. Will most definitely recommend!

Toddler approved!. We've been here twice now, and both times have been superb! The food is excellent, the service is outstanding! The second time we stopped in was right after opening and the owner himself was waiting on us, so friendly! I strongly recommend the greek club and the moussaka! Fantastic food!
Tyler Ray
Warm Service, Great food!. The title says it all. You are always received warmly and wholeheartedly by the staff and ownership. The restaurant itself is well decorated and ambient, ideal for cozying up with a glass of greek wine, some of their fantastic appetizers or homestyle favorites.

I have worked as a manager in the casual fine dining market for a number of years and it must be said that the food and service consistently go above and beyond expectations. I had dinner here last week and tried the house slow roasted lamb served with rice, vegetables and greek potato. It was fantastic. As were the shots of ouzo that followed! OPA!
Bob
Had a great time. Super service, amazing food and fun atmosphere. They brought me the wrong salad but that might be my new favourite thing on the menu. I will be a regular.
Jen
Great Greek Place. Fantastic food and excellent service. I highly recommend the Kleftiko Plate for those who enjoy lamb. The Saganaki here is decent as well.
Frank
Never be back. All these great reviews...we must have missed something, lol. We MADE a reservation and we asked for a booth. We get there and a lady tells us to go sit at the booth and while we are walking to that booth, another woman comes out of nowhere and quite loudly told us "you can't sit there, that's reserved, did you make a reservation?" She sat us elsewhere...we don't like to complain too much so we didn't really say much about it. We just ordered our food. A couple of us tried their lasagna...the most watery flavourless gunk. Won't be back! They need to change their decor.
Ashley Joan
Waiting thirty minutes for a drink was the least ostentasious gesture performed by the serving staff. Our waitress was negligent, to say the very least. We were not asked how our food was, if we would like replenishments on drinks and had our coats on and waiting to leave before we finally had to approach our server to pay. In one of the dishes we had ordered, the seafood lasagna, the shrimp was noy even detailed before being thrown into the cheese soup that was trying to diguise itself as a upscale pasta. Overall, extreme dissappoinment was the general consensus of our group.
Mike
Wonderful Greek Food at its finest!
Josh
If you want ribs better call ahead. Went there this eve and they were 'out'. What a bummer.

-----10 Oct, 2012-----

Best moussaka I've ever had.
Calgarian Foodies
Great night! Four of us went for dinner and left full and happy. The appetizer platter is huge - we only ordered two entrees to share between the four of us afterwards. The house red wine is very good. Friendly service and delicious greek food! The owner came by to say hello and was incredibly kind. Looks pretty plain from outside but quite nice inside. Will absolutely be going back!
Jason D Kippen
Amazing!. From the time we walked through the doors to the moment we left, everything was exceptional! our service was fantastic and the food was even better. you have to try this fantastic place, you won't be disappointed.
Deborah
Amazing food!!! I always wondered what this place was like and even though the outside looks like it's a run down building, you walk inside and it's a wonderfully decorated Greek restaurant. We recently went to Greece and wanted to try a place we had never been. The food was so good and the portions are a great size for the price. We ordered beer and wine, appetizers, and 2 entrees. We could barely finish the entrees. The staff is really friendly and we would definitely come back to this hidden Calgary gem.
Mike H.
Best Greek I've had in Calgary. I think I've eaten at every Greek restaraunt in Calgary. I also spent a couple months in Greece in my youth. I think Calypsos is the best Greek place I've ever been to. The outside looks like strip-mall Hell, but the inside is very nice. We ordered the appetizer platter for two, a bottle of retsina, and a couple of entrees. Big mistake! The appetizer platter was a meal in itself, and I ended up bringing 90% of my excellent lamb dish home in a box!

Great food, huge portions, and fair prices make this a super restaurant for date nights or special occaisions.
Janine.noble
FANTASTIC. We go to Calypso's often and have never had a bad experience. The food is always awesome. Hands down the BEST Greek food in the city. Check them out for lunch, the menu is great.
Lisa
Hands Down Best in the West. I am a regular here at Calypso's usually several times a week. The food is made with much care and you can tell that the cook loves what he does and take it to heart what he makes...it feels like every mouthful has Greek passion in it. Furthermore the restaurant was the location for my wedding not to long ago and our guests raved about the food and service. Recommend to everyone who wants a true home cooked Greek meal. The owners make you feel like family when you are there. You will not be disappointed.
Pickier Than You
Great Value. Nice cozy restaurant brought back memories of restaurants growing up.

I really enjoyed all the food except the steak. Service was great too. Vegies, appies all perfect. Next time I am sticking to the greak dishes like the Lamb my mom had... it was really nice.

The steak was cooked perfectly, however the cut of meat was quite poor (a very low grade)... same with my brother's steak... lots of connective tissue and very tough for that cut. The chef did a good job with it otherwise however, cooked to order and seasoned very nicely. I must emphasize everything else was perfect.

I am coming back... just not for the steak.
Yoda
Will be back. We had th salmon and shrimp special...Salmon was nicely done..shrimp were large but a bit rubbery....I hear the lamb is fantastic so will have to return and give it a try. Nice staff, good service and the food was certainly good quality for the price.
Matmons
Oh yeah!. I think this must be the best greek restaurant in Calgary. Great food, great service.
Chip Eats Out
OK Food/ Nice People. We always have a good time at Calypso's. The service is friendly and very effective. They always handle our large family group in a warm welcomnig manner!
The food is OK but certainly not of the quality of Santorini's

Chip and Family
Chrys
Awesome! My husband and I try to go every week or so....Soooo delicious, comfortable, love it!
Ekkekko
Best greek food and atmosphere. What a nice place! Welcoming, helpful service (Parsley was terrific) and absolutely delicious food. We will be back.
Cully
Love it! Not what you would expect inside from the exterior, a lot fancier than you would think. Seafood lasagna is tops!!
Nina
Nina. Wow, this was my 6th time and it was the best lamb I have had in a restaurant ever! the soup never fails either!
Grishma
Great service!. I used a Wagjag voucher to dine here. The service was great and my boyfriend really enjoyed his meal but I thought the food was ok.. Maybe because I am a vegetarian. I have to say though that if you go here, you must order the Saganaki!! It was amazing.
LETS EAT
Fresh best Greek food Best I have had in Canada!
Nobody In Particular
What a Surprise. This is another tucked away little spot, that when driving by most people wouldn't notice, or at least I never did, a place like this. The sign is modest, and there isn't much parking, so this was the last place we'd think of to go for greek food.
I guess the only greek food I've had is from OPA!, which I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Greek just never really stood out for me. We decided to come here one night because of all the great reviews, and also because a friend had reccommended it.
Although the outside isn't much, the inside was very nice, modern and minimalist, and didn't have a tacky feel. You can tell this is a family owned restaurant.
The host, and wait staff were extremely informative and friendy right off the bat.
We started with the calamari and pita and tzatziki. When the calamari came came out, I have to admit it didn't look that great. The batter was very light in color, not golden brown, and from a distance they didn't look like they were fried well. It was a totally different story once we took our first bite. The batter was crispy, crunchy, and light, seasoned only slightly but perfectly. The squid was soft and not rubbery at all, which a lot of places that serve calamari can't achieve. The accompanying tzatziki was fresh and light as well. It added a nice 'zing' to the calamari experience. The pitas were a little crispy on the outide, and super soft and fluffy on the inside.
For our main dishes I had the meatballs in a tomato sauce, and my boyfriend had the lamb. Talk about huge portions. Each entree came with a salad of your choice, a roasted potatoe, rice, and veggies. I went with the caesar salad, that the menu stated was made with homemade caesar dressing, and my boyfriend went with the greek salad. Unfortunately our waitress forgot to bring our salads, and instead came straight out with the main dishes. Luckily that worked out, because there was so much food on the plates, we could barely stand up by the end of the night. My meatballs and sauce were much more than I could have ever dreamed they could be. Tangy and unique flavours swirling around in the rustic sauce, and hand made meatballs. Now, we've never been fans of lamb, but decided to give it a try since this was advertised as one of their specialties. I am so glad we did. I never knew lamb could be so good. The meat was tender, and didn't have that "lamb-y" flavour that I thought it was suppose to have. It tasted like a really soft, buttery, beef. Just melt in your mouth. The sides were perfect.
For dessert we had what was called "ek mek", which is a pastry bottom, layered with custard, whipped cream, and almonds over top. It had this amazing cinnamon, or nutmeg flavour. Airy, not too sweet, and the perfect end to a wonderful dinner. Our waitress also forgot to bring the after dinner coffee my boyfriend ordered.
Aside from some forgotten items, this place must surely be one of the best greek restaurants in town. There's just so much attention to flavours, and details of all the food they make.
RoxP
We loved this restaurant! Authentic Greek food with a homecooked feel. Huge portions too!
Tanya Reczek
Greek greatness!. We went to Calypso's for dinner on a Sunday and we were both very pleasantly surprised. We decided to try Calypso's after reading good reviews on urbanspoon and couldn't agree more with the rave reviews. The service was quick and friendly and the food was delicious. We will be returning to Calypo's!
Philly.arbiter
Great service, decor, atmosphere and large portions!. I, being an avid traveler for business, went to Calypso alone one night. As a person who eats alone at restaurants for need to get away from Hotel rooms every night, enjoyed the atmosphere there. It was very friendly yet intimate. The interior decor was wonderful even though the outside is very deceiving. I ordered the stuffed calamari meal which was delicious however, with a little hiccup in the ordering process I received the wrong menu item. The staff was very accommodating and apologetic and quick to fix the mistake, which to be honest i just wanted the potatoes! that I felt bad for telling them in the end!

Summary: Great friendly accommodating service, wonderful decor, food will definitely fill you up and, while many of Greek restaurants over flavor with oregano and garlic this food was perfectly flavored.

Really impressive!. This restaurant may look like a hole in the wall from the outside, but here's where they say - don't judge a book by it's cover! It's actually really cozy and nicely decorated inside.

My friend took me to here for dinner last night for my Birthday. She had the spanakopita and greek style ribs, while I had the mousaka dinner. All three items were superb. The spanakopita was actually a huge, one piece pastry rather than a plate of small ones, and it had lots of filling inside. Ribs were very tender, juicy and the best part was they weren't dry! The mousaka came with a starter salad (choice of greek or caesar - I chose greek), and the sides were rice, roasted veggies and roasted potatoes. The salad was simple but drenched in a bit too much olive oil. The mousaka was a nice size portion - every layer was distinct and perfectly seasoned. It was the best tasting mousaka I've ever had. Rice was good; veggies were not overdone. The only thing I didn't like was the roasted potatoes - they didn't look roasted to me and it didn't really taste like anything.

To finish the meal my friend and I shared (can't remember the name) a dessert which was a baked custard in phyllo pastry, dusted with icing sugar. Good thing we shared because again, the portion was huge! And when my friend told the owner that it was my Birthday, she actually gave us the dessert as complimentary! How sweet!

I will definitely come back. My only peeve with this place is... they charge $1 for hot water and lemon. I've never been charged anywhere for that! But you know what, the food here is so good and the service was great as well, that's something I can overlook.

Great place!. We've driven past Calypso many times, but it took us a while to be in the right mood for Greek. Once we had our first meal, we were back for seconds later the same week, and thirds just a few days later. A good sign, I'd say!

The service is remarkably friendly and homey. Our server was willing to joke and smile, but also kept an appropriately professional manner... just the right combination of each. We had the same server most of our visits, and she helped colour our appreciation to be sure.

The food servings are, as I've come to expect from Greek, quite enormous. Everything is delicious, although the Greek salad is not the best I've ever had (but it's still quite nice). I particularly enjoyed the pita and dips; I love my flatbreads, and they do them well here.

We've never spent a great deal of money at Calypso, and we've always had a great time. I recommend it highly.

Homestyle Greek Food at its Best!. It's so refreshing to go to a good family-style restaurant and be treated like, well...family! The friendly owners and staff really make this little taverna, but it's the finger-smucking- good fresh food that keeps us coming back.

This is probably the best Greek "traditional" food in Calgary now (for modern Greek cuisine and gourmet cooking, we will have to wait until "Piato" re-opens!).

We've tried many dishes, and all were excellent. On more than one occassion our server (or one of the owners) has suggested that maybe we should order something because "we just made it now." Maybe it's spanokopita, or a nice cut of roasted lamb right out of the oven, but always excellent and fresh.

Wine selection is not great, as a couple of reviewers have mentioned---the usual low-grade Boutaris and a few other table wines, but the Tsantali organic cabernet and a zinfandel they carry are quite drinkable as is one of the Boutari whites (the Moschofilero). A shame Calypso's doesn't carry any of the nice Greek wines with indigenous grapes from the private estates that are available in Calgary at Market Wines in the Currie Barracks Farmers' Market, although they can be a bit pricey in a restaurant.

Keep an eye out for special nights when a whole lamb or suckling pig is roasted, and they bring in live bouzouki music---all for a bargain price, and always sold out quickly!

Best restaurant experience in years. This place has renewed my faith in the restaurant industry. For years I have stopped eating out due to bad service terrible food and a badd attituide for the establishments. This was changed in one night. I am in LOVE with this little restaurant! The food is great withe the main courses being just as good as the appetizers, the food quality is superb and service is better than I have seen in ten years.I havent ever felt catered to like this in years a Italian girl(the names escape me now)served us and the owners wife would drop in to check on us every so often.I am officially eating out more often, the service was great but noT pushy, the atmosphere was very relaxing and the food was out of this world.

HIDDEN GEM. I had such a wonderful dinner here, a group of us went into try it and were blown away. Our server Danielle was very attentive and on top of everything, best service we have had in years as well as everyone else there we wanted for nothiing! We share Saganaki and a Appetizer platter and the food to die for!The portions are great for groups and I would definately take my family here as you get a excelleny value for a very reasonable price! Our dinners exeeded all our expectaions, and we found that the food was just like it is in greece, not watered down at all. It was the best experience we have had in years.... and we are very picky people.Between the fantastic service and the outstanding menu we are going back and recomending it to everyone we know.

Disappointed. After reading several good reviews about this place we made a reservation for my husband's birthday dinner. While the restaurant itself is new and clean and the serving staff is pleasant there wasn't anything we ate that would have us dine there again.
I ordered shrimp in tomato sauce with feta. There was hardly any feta and the tomato sauce was pretty run of the mill. A small Greek salad was served with this and there was no flavour to the dressing at all.
My husband ordered the lamb and he said it was just "okay." He also ordered the small caesar salad with his dinner. The croutons were out of a package and the lettuce in his salad consisted entirely of the pale ends of the romaine leaves. We didn't stay for dessert since were disappointed enough. While the prices are reasonable we'd rather pay a little more for a little more flavour.

A Sail to Greek Paradise !. Out of popularity, I checked out this restaurant to catch up with a friend. I felt quite welcome and comfortable as I entered. Greeted and seated right away by an extremely friendly waitress.

A tough menu to order from as all dishes gave a savoury impression. As I browsed the menu, my friend and I started with an appetizer, the stuffed calamari. A great tasting and well balanced calamari ball with a unique sauce that definitely worked well. But, a bit pricey for the portion size as they only gave 2 balls for $10.

Next I ordered the House Special Kleftiko. It came in a complete platter as I had a good sized portion of roasted lamb with rice, potatoes, veggies, and a Greek salad. The lamb was well herbed, tender, and moist. Just what you want in a Kleftiko. The other sides with the dish helped with getting your value for your dish. The Greek salad was probably the best one I've tried in Calgary. A good mixture of fresh veggies, olive oil, and herbs. It was a healthy balance to the heavier diet of the roasted lamb. My friend had the Athenian Chicken Fettuccini, and from what I could see, it was a good portion and the sauce on the pasta had the right consistency.

I would definitely recommend this to any Greek fan as I felt it was one of my better experiences in Greek dining. I like the service, the atmosphere, and amazing food. Book your reservation soon and try it out.

An excellent menu and a superb kitchen. I can't say enough good things about this place, and my criticisms are few: I'd like to see a better wine selection, and I think the portions are much, much too large. Go for the excellent menu, Greek in spirit and in fact, with just enough inventiveness to keep it interesting. Go for the personable, efficient service. Go for the outstanding value for money.

Best Greek food in Calgary. This place is great. Excellent value, fantastic food, and great service / friendly owners.

The spanikopita was a little "untraditional" but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Perfect melt-in-your-mouth calamari, and out of this world "Panos soup" - bean soup. I've been twice and will be making it a regular destination.

Great food and a fun atmosphere. Portions are generous and the menu is big but not overwhelming. Great place for a date.

Our favorite Greek restaurant in Calgary is a small family-owned place called Calypso’s Taverna. It’s part of a strip mall on Centre Street and admittedly not much to look at from the outside but this Restaurant serves up some amazingly delicious and authentic Greek dishes.

The service is not boring. Very Greek I assume. It was attentive, but not overbearing. Be prepared to eat or take it home as the portions are substantial.
