Review Market - Calgary

Ordered the 8oz AAA steak. I asked for a rare. It came well done. One look, I knew it seemed wrong. One cut into it, I knew it wasn't right. I'm flabbergasted that they think this is a 8oz AAA steak. Server said this is what they get from their order, I am pretty sure I looked horrified that they are serving me a flat steak that does not resemble anything like a proper steak at a cost of $34. Also commenting that they can't cook it to rare because of how thin this steak is and that they are not a steakhouse. Upon hearing that, my tiny Asian pair of eyes couldn't help but widened up. I'm sure it looked bigger than my normal days... You don't need to be a steakhouse to serve a 8oz AAA steak. I'm amazed that a business have the courage to allow their people to serve something like this and charge the public $34 for that item on the menu. It should have been April Fool's Day.

Made a same day reservation for dinner before we settled in our hotel near the airport. Seated and the bar. Service was great and food was solid. Loved the gin and tonic do it your way menu!

I’ve been following this page on their Instagram and the food looks fabulous. My husband and I went to try out this place yesterday and ordered the West Coaat Benny with a coffee, let me tell you, the food was phenomenal and had the chance to shake the hand of the chef to let him know how outstanding that food was! The parking was a bit of challenging but found a spot eventually. The inside was nicely decorated, cozy and clean, great atmosphere! My hubby and I drove all the sway from Airdrie to try out this place! I recommend it for newbies!!!

Stopped in for some drinks while waiting for reservations a t another place. Market was a pleasant surprise. New decor, modernization, and renovations have turned this place from the dive it once used to be - the yardhouse to something classy and worth stopping in for food and drinks at. Definitely will come back again. Great atmosphere, awesome twist to traditional drinks, and excellent service. Worthwhile to stop in to check this place out.

The food is incredible, and the atmosphere is clean, chic, and slightly upscale. I definitely enjoyed the brunch here and will for sure try again !

Amazing gastro experience. Order the drink called “Becky With The Good Hair.” The chef’s dinner for two was braised elk shank when we were there and it was delicious. No knife needed.
Lara Estelle
Fantastic fresh food, I love that they use local ingredients. The chefs are fantastic the food is well worth the price! The atmosphere is very welcoming and decor is very well done. I would eat here anytime.

First time at the Market. Had the beef tartare with quail egg and chips... tasty. The tomahawk pork was delicious! Moist and well seasoned. Drinks were Your Blue Boy & Smoked Maple Old Fashioned... definitely got buzzed. Well attended by server.

Unfortunately, our experience wasn't as we had anticipated. The menu was enticing, the atmosphere was perfect but the food and service was mediocre. We reserved a table for 6 at 7:00 on a Wednesday night. We were all looking forward to having oysters as a starter as the oysters were the featured special of the evening. The server took our order only to return to the table to say there were no oysters. We ordered a variety of other items; some of us were sharing and others ordered a main or a couple of starters. As for the food, the Brome Lake Duck, a main dinner item, for $35, was a small portion. The meat was not succulent and juicy but more on the well done side. The Lobster Mac and Cheese lacked flavor and the wings were overcooked. Each of us felt our portion was not that big for the price and we have eaten at several other restaurants on 17th where small plates are offered. We ordered desserts and after taking our order, the server returned to say that the cheesecake was not available because it was not set. We understand that a restaurant that specializes in made from scratch items may run out or have limited quantities but, at the very least, our server should have been more well informed prior to taking our order. The drinks were good but after spending $325 we didn't feel we came away with that "wow" feeling.

Great dinner with my Hubby and another couple Saturday night. We did lots of sharing because it was so hard to choose from the delicious sounding menu. Brussels sprouts, potato skins, beef tartar, burger, gnocchi, duck, pork dish, and chocolate 3 ways for dessert. Did not disappoint. Great service and atmosphere.

The decor, service and drinks were great. The food lacked in taste in several dishes and some was cold. However, that was promptly remedied by our server and otherwise our experience was great! Certainly a great spot for afterwork drinks! If they just had better flavours coming the kitchen this place would be a four or five star spot!

We have been to Market a few times with high expectations -- we really do want to rave about it... but! Again, we went yesterday for some Braised Lamb poutine AU JUS (!, that's key). It arrived but appeared immediately to look dry and our suspicions were confirmed, but no problem. We politely told our very attentive waiter that it was a little dry and perhaps could use some jus to help. And presto! A small jug of jus arrived beautifully presented with delicious pea shoots. Problem solved (: except they charged us $2 for the jus. WHAT?? It certainly was not the $2, it was the idea that we as customers were wrong about the lamb being dry and needing extra jus which of course we should be obligated to pay for. We consider ourselves experienced foodies and when we both agree something is dry -- especially something famously not dry like poutine and gravy (!!) -- I think a few splashes of jus should be complimentary... but perhaps we just don't know dry lamb from moist. Ps. the poutine at Trolley 5 and National was very moist.

Amazing meal and really good services, I like all three courses from the big taste menu. I had a crab corn dog, duck and rice pudding as a dessert Wish I can have it every day ... hehe

The food was amazing. One of the best meals I have ever eaten. Incredibly well prepared. Service was great, albeit a little bit slow, (in all fairness it was Canada day) the quality of the food was spectacular. The staff are super friendly and courteous. A very enjoyable evening.

Wonderful meal, wonderful staff. I would highly recommend this restaurant. Great atmosphere and excellent service!

With such a focus on supoorting local and seasonal cuisine, it's hard not to fall in love with this spot. With the perfect ambience that is bright and inviting, it's easy to find yourself at a table or up at the bar enjoying one of their fun, often-changing cocktails with their delicious food. My personal favorites are the Brussels sprouts (omggggg to die for) and the gnocchi, but I have never had a single dish that Evan created that was anything less than delicious. Front of house staff are knowledgeable and friendly--you can definitely see that this restaurant has turned into a family.

I had not been to market for about a year when I had a great meal.. not the case tonight I suggested it to colleagues and we met there for dinner. The table was filthy and sticky and apparently could not be cleaned. Our waitress was not exactly versed in her wine list or the food choices. Our food was average but I was embarrassed for suggesting the restaurant. Not going back .. ever

Every time we have been there, Evan Robertson the head chef and his team whips us up the most ncredible dinner. We always chose the chef's plate which is different every time. The service is impeccable. Water glasses refilled numerous time.
Tara Noland
We loved our Thursday night dinner for two platter. Would have never thought to pair salmon and french onion soup together but it was fabulous! Can't wait to come back!
Stella Schmidt
We had excellent service, (Ryan was a friendly and attentive server) Great food and Fabulous wine, our CastorodeOro Merlot ;-)

Our friends booked this place in advance and mentioned we had two toddlers needing high chairs. No one responded yet we arrive only to be told they don’t do high chairs! Who doesn’t have high chairs - they’re only $15 from Ikea! Coming from London where UK restaurants cater for all it was such a disappointment as we were looking forward to trying ‘one of Calgary’s top rated restaurants’ but only stayed for a drink.

Great food and amazing decor!! The charcuterie board is a must have. Most of it is made in house and they do it up right the Pork and the Beef were cooked to perfection and even though we didn't save room at the end for dessert we still managed to fit it in because it was to die for. Service was great too! Definitely plan on going back to try something else on the menu.

Love this restaurant. Feel like every bite of food there is perfectly seasoned and delicious.

We went out for the summer feast 3 course dinner for $35 and the meal was delicious! The truffle soup changed my mind about mushrooms and the pork loin was so tender and flavorful! Very friendly waitresses and attentive service!
Caitlyn Axworthy
Amazing food! Great atmosphere. Friendly staff. I would go there every day if I could :) hands down one of my favorite restaurants!

Multiple flavours on each beautiful plate. Dishes are akin to comfort food with a professional finish. Each bite is a delightful surprise of innovative, yet well-thought out food (5/5).

Nice place to go for dinner, it's a bit expensive for the portion you get.. Some things might not be worth it
The service was a bit slow but the food was great
All About Food
A polished & comfortable venue. All-around consistent. Like the farm-table focus. Food is prepared thoughtfully & presented beautifully! Most items we've tried are fresh & simple yet bursting with flavor. They grow & prepare a lot of the food themselves which is represented by the taste & texture of the food they serve. Staff are attentive & engaging also very knowledgeable. Friendly but still professional & respectful. The waiter/ess have always been happy to answer questions, make accommodations & allow time to browse through the menu. We always have a pleasant time here it is such a treat.

Came here for Valentine's and was disappointed. The proportions were on the small side and for a special Valentines menu, I would have expected the food to be amazing since the options were really limited but the food was just okay. Overall mediocre food especially for the price. We were not happy with how closely the couples tables are spaced either. Maybe another visit in the future for their regular menu will yield a better review.

We went here for dinner. Our reservation was at 7pm and we didn't get our table until 7:40pm. We had the pulled pork tacos to start, which came out really fast. We both found them delicious. For our main we had the duck and bison. Between the starter and the mains, we waited another 35/40 minutes. We thought the mains tasted good but were nothing special. We both agreed that the portion sizes for the mains were small. The duck came out with the plate only half full. There was a few small pieces of duck, a small amount of potato and some vegetables. We both still felt hungry after. We also thought it was expensive for what you get, although we guess you pay for the quality of food rather than the portion size...

I visited recently for a $28 prix fixe lunch during Big Taste and have to say that Market is one of my favourite spots. Even at regular prices, it feels like great value for the quality of ingredients and selection of delicious dishes. I can't recommend the Market salad highly enough! The only downside here is that it can be a bit too loud to have an intimate conversation when they blast music during the "Bangover Brunch" and the service can be a little slow and inattentive, but these are small prices to pay for some of the most delicious food in Calgary.

Market’s modern dining room features a lot of clean lines, white surfaces, and black accents. The restaurant was one-third full for brunch on a Sunday afternoon. We were warned that the Pork and Beans were sold out, and that they didn’t have any potatoes, so the Poutine and fries were unavailable. It was strange to hear that they didn’t have potatoes for a brunch service (also, Safeway is just three blocks away).
I ordered the West Coast Benny - the focaccia and hollandaise were good, and the eggs were perfectly poached. However, the gravlax was unbearably salty. I’m quite a fan of smoked salmon, lox, and gravlax, but this version was far too salty for my liking. The cheddar tots were decent, but they tasted store-bought as opposed to house-made. There was no potato taste within the tots. Also, the portion of the tots was disappointingly small compared to what is offered at other brunch spots.
My partner ordered the Duck & Waffles and he quite enjoyed it. The duck was cooked well and the waffles had a crisp texture on the outside. He questions, however, if the Serrano coleslaw actually complements the rest of the dish. Overall, the flavours were great, but the portion did not justify the price.
Ultimately, the meal is best described as “okay” - it is certainly not my favourite spot in the city.

I have been here before and could have sworn I wrote a review already (came for their tacos on special- delicious!).
Either way we returned for our anniversary and enjoyed a really nice meal. Their tartare was fantastic ! So delicious and full of flavour, my only complaint is that the menu stated a quails egg yolk on top and ours was served without one, which was disappointing. I ordered salmon for my main and it was delicious I even got to take some home to enjoy the next day! And my husband got the burger which was also amazing with thick strips of bacon! We also tried their house made sodas - really good !
I've been craving the best tacos and I decided to try this upscale restaurant to see what they had to offer for taco Tuesday.

The tacos at 3$ each where delicious and the flavours were unique and bold between the three types , the tuna poke being my favourite. Only complaint was the duck taco tastes a bit too salty.

We also decided to try the 3 course lunch and I have to say we were very impressed . For the food and quality of what you get it is superb. Starting with a salad that tasty very fresh and interesting. We decided the fried chicken sandwhich which was bursting in flavour and Crispiness as well as some of the best seasoned fries I have ever had . Very addicting dish! To finish it off an apple pie with ice cream that Was simple but delicious .

The service was excellent, we were the only people in the restaurant but the server was very attentive and food came out perfect .

I will for sure return to market to try some of their other offerings and indulge in their 3 course lunch.

Check it out !!

Good food nice atmosphere. Recommend the halibut. Wine was good as well as the trifle for desert. Will definitely be eating out here again in the near future.

Love the atmosphere here! The service is excellent and the food never disappoints. Their beef tartar is amazing and if you're just looking to have a few drinks, their cocktails are fantastic (old fashioned is smoky delicious). Do try the truffle popcorn as a table snack with your drinks 😁

Great place to stop on a walk about on 17th. Stopped in last night for a wine and had a couple of appi's Really liked the Crab Corndogs and the Duck salad rolls, I had not been in a year, but will definately go back for dinner soon, Watch for an update.

This is one of my go-to places for a date or to bring visitors from out of town. The decor is very cool and clean, and the food is always phenomenal. In summer, the patio is a great way to people watch without being on display yourself. I've also been to live music acts here and the layout allows good viewing and decent sound quality.

The fiesta ended May 7, hot on the heels of Poutine Week and the precursor to the YYC Burger Battle. YYC Taco Fiesta raises funds for the Calgary Homeless Foundation and Kids Up Front earning 15% of each taco sale. I love that restaurants come together for great causes like this. The charities and the foundations win, the restaurants get clientele they may not have before and their chefs get to stretch their creative limbs, and us the foodies, get to try some delicious new treats.

Food was ok nothing special. They were out of a few things from the menu. Service was ok at first then we barely saw our server. Wouldnt go back.

I went to Market during Big Taste. It didn't live up to the expectation of Big Taste or the yummy sounding menu. I decided on the mushroom soup to start, which was salty. I'm used to a more creamy soup but this has chunks! I suppose the crab corn dogs could've been better but I have allergies. For the second I chose the duck and waffles. Tasted ok, but the duck wings were over-fried and waffles were dry. My family ordered the crab corn dogs (which was probably the best part of their meal). The fish and chips, I tried a small bite of my son's, again super salty. My husband had the overcooked pasta. For dessert, it was the "pastry" chefs special, which turned out to be rice pudding - how is rice pudding a pastry? I took one small spoon and didn't bother with the rest. My family felt the same. We looked around and I'm sure not one person emptied that rice pudding bowl as small as it was. It sure wasn't worth the $35 for the Big Taste. More like $20. I thought the whole idea of Big Taste was to "showcase" but it was disappointing. I was really looking forward to dining there, but highly doubt I would return. The server was also unfriendly.

Had very similar experience to another reviewer who had the Big Taste Calgary menu. Menu really lacked execution, sounded a lot better on paper.

I may have chosen all the wrong things but I did not enjoy my Big Taste dinner at Market. I decided on the mushroom soup to start, which was ok. I'm used to a creamy soup with pieces of mushroom but in this case the mushrooms were ground so the soup was almost chunky. The crab corn dogs were much better. For the second I chose the vegetarian dish, however, the mushroom 'tart' was dry and hard, tasting almost burnt, and the vegetable 'linguine' was zucchini and carrots and too overdone and mushy. My husband chose the duck and waffles and the duck wings were overcooked and barely had any meat on them and waffles were dry. He did not enjoy his dish either. For dessert, it was the pastry chefs special, which turned out to be rice pudding. How is rice pudding considered a pastry? It had a nice flavour, however, it just didn't live up to our expectations amongst all these other restaurants that are participating in Big Taste.

Came here for brunch with a few friends on a snowy day, and another time for a friend's birthday dinner. For the brunch, they were booked out for later but still let us in, the service was absolutely amazing and so friendly. Food was fantastic, for brunch, a few of us ordered eggs benedict and one tried the breakfast sandwich, it was all amazing. I had the lamb for dinner and it was flavourful, well-portioned and cooked perfectly, not dry at all. Drinks were also fantastic, between the two meals I've had a sip of Purple Rain, Strawberry Fields, and their caesar. Will definitely be back! Not cheap by any means, but that's understandable given the food, quality of ingredients, location, interior, and service. A go-to for a more special occasion.
Hangry In YYC
February 2018

Stopped in to Market for lunch on a weekday.

Atmosphere:
Space - it's a great bright, open space to get together and have conversation.
Service - the waiter was overly friendly with jokes that weren't funny. When you have to ask "are you laughing with me or at me" and all you hear is a polite laugh, you should probably just stop there.

Ordered their burger which was a wagyu patty, large slice of bacon, tomato, havarti and a pickle. I personally found the patty to be a bit dry and didn't even finish it (if you know me, that's a rare occurrence).

The burger came with fries which were delicious and come in their own mini deep fry basket. Fries were perfectly crispy but the Market salad tasted like they were pre made and it was just brought of the fridge - super cold.

Burger $22 plus tip and tax - would not recommend it.

2 / 5

December 2016

My friends and I went to Market for lunch. The service was friendly but slow – almost like they weren’t prepared for customers over the holidays. There was one waitress and one hostess and they both took turns as bartenders and runners.

I was originally looking forward to tacos (because who doesn’t look forward to tacos) since it was Tuesday’s special – but with the holiday season, they did not receive their shipment of fish. The only taco they had available that day was a duck confit with cranberry sauce so instead we ordered the:

Fried Chicken Sandwich – the fried chicken to bun ratio is incredible skewed towards the fried chicken. The chicken was crispy and moist.

BELT – BLT with a fried egg. My friend said it was delicious but it was a bit light - if she had been hungrier it would not be enough food.

Pulled Pork Sandwich - soft bun; pulled pork was juicy

3 / 5

Dropped by the Market the other day with a friend for appetisers, the place has a great farm house feel to it, yet its warmly modern, nicely done, we ordered the Duck Tacos, Crab with Squid Ink cake,Gnocchi, and Wild Mushrooms, they were all good and came out in a timely manner, the server was excellent and very informative about the menu,my favourite was the gnocchi they were rich and creamy, my table mate loved her Duck Tacos which were more of a crepe then a taco, but they were flavorful and tasty, I will certainly be back for more.

Steady as she goes.... This restaurant has consistently provided delicious food over the years and makes the BEST fried chicken I have ever had. Succulent, boneless and crispy - what a pleasure. Consider ordering it free of its sandwich and you will not be disappointed. Great staff, crisp decor and fresh new ideas keep me returning often. I would recommend Market without hesitation.

I don't normally review restaurants but had such an awful experience I felt the need to share. DO NOT GO HERE!!!

Market is an overpriced disaster. I went with my boyfriend and we will never go back. The tables are so close together that we could barely have a conversation because we were practically sharing a table with the people next to us. Not great for a date night. We joked with the table beside us about how we were thankful they could join us for dinner.

We had a couple of their cocktails which both tasted like swamp water. After that we switched to wine. We thought that would be better but the bottle had clearly been open for several days and the wine was off. I stuck to water after that.

We shared the duck tacos as an appetizer which were soggy and bland. They took almost half an hour to be cooked so we ate them anyway because we were so hungry. Next our main course took almost an hour to arrive. My boyfriend had the lamb. It came with a green mystery sauce that was so bitter it overpowered everything else on the plate. The portion of lamb was small (the size of my thumb) and extremely dry. I had the beef which I could barely taste because of all of the salt.

After our long wait and terrible meal we had no desire to have dessert but we were curious what they offered. Only 3 options and they were out of one.

Our server was nice enough but did nothing to accommodate our terrible experience. You could not pay me to return to Market. It was the worst dining experience of my life. Your money would be better spent at Burger King.
Mello
Had the gnocchi to start. They were fluffy delicious pillows of goodness. Myself and my friend shared the halibut and their daily pasta special which was a veggie pasta. The pasta was nothing amazing, but still very tasty. The halibut was perfectly seasoned and beautifully cooked. The cocktails are great, as well as the atmosphere. I will definitely be going back!

I recently threw a 65th birthday party for my father at MARKET. I sent out several emails to a number of farm to table restaurants in Calgary and MARKET owner Vanessa Salopek responded to me almost immediately. She was extremely accommodating and handled a fluctuating guest list and request to push the reservation forward by an hour like a champ.

There were 17 of us in total, including 3 vegetarians and a 93 year old with a walker and oxygen unit. There were also three guests with hearing loss. The lighting and noise level were great for the older guest with reduced hearing and vision capabilities. Even the three vegetarians were satisfied!
We had an absolutely wonderful time! The food was absolutely incredible, the staff were patient, considerate, accommodating and attentive.

The restaurant staff allowed us bring in flowers and helium balloons and gave us advice on where not to place the balloons, to avoid heat and sharp ceiling fixtures that had the potential to pop then. They also allowed us to bring in our own cake, for a small plating fee. I actually ended up bringing in two cakes and the staff agreeably put the candles and sparklers I supplied on. They also lit them better than I ever could (anyone else have problems getting sparklers all lit at the same time, on a cake and presented to the birthday boy or girl while they are still burning?) and even presented them on some absolutely gorgeous cake platters.

Overall, our experience at MARKET was wonderful and I would definitely recommend them to anyone wanting to throw a dinner event at a restaurant.

Although the name makes it hard to find, this restaurant is a little gem. It was one of several stops on a poutine crawl during Poutine Week and they were serving up a really delicious variation.

The Market poutine was Carbonara with a black pepper bechamel sauce, peas, pancetta, curds, pea tendrils, parmesan and sous-vide eggs. I left the eggs to Derek and the others at the table as I can't stand the texture of eggs that aren't "cooked to death" as he calls them.

The fries were crispy and well seasoned while the cheese was gooey and perfectly melted. The sauce was light and balanced the saltiness of the parmesan. The real treat of the poutine was the peas. They were fresh, the pea tendrils were delicious, and honestly they were the best part. Fresh peas that tasted like they'd been pulled right off the vine can't really be beat. Without the egg it had to be one of the best poutines I had the whole evening.

The drink list looked a tad expensive, but I'd enjoy a trip back to this place to try the regular menu for sure!

On a side note - the live music was amazing, it was great for background but not enough to overpower conversation. The musician that night was playing some really amazing variations of songs that I hadn't heard before. The chalkboard walls were cool too...they leave chalk lying around for you to draw on them and that's just fun.
That Girl
Really cute restaurant. Service was good. My friend and I ordered a bunch of appetizers to share. Which included: duck tacos (We ordered a forth one to make it even). This was probably my least favourite dish of the night. The wrapper was very soggy and the flavour was really strange. I was hoping for s sturdy shell since it was described as a taco. The truffle buttermilk chicken wings were delicious, super juicy and flavourful. Except for the one that I unfortunately ate half of, before realizing it was borderline raw. Not cool. Scallops were my favourite dish of the evening, however for two pieces the price is pretty steep. Last, but not least fries. Which were just like any other fries I've had before. Tasty, but I only ordered them because my crazy friend insisted.

Our family of 4 had diner last night Friday April 1st. We ordered the following dishes: Fries $8, side of bake potato bread $4 (4 small pieces), Braised beef $31, the chicken $28 and the trout $30. I'll start with the Braised Beef. The meat was nice and tender but the flavor was of cheap dinner quality. It came with mushrooms and Kale and a mushroom pure. The mushroom flavor was overwhelming and the kale was bitter. I can make Kale taste great at home and i am NOT good cook. The price point for this dish should between $15 and $18.

Now the chicken; Over salted and dry. These were the words of my 13 year old daughter and my wife confirmed it. The only good thing about this dish was the bacon bread putting. Price point for this dish $14-$17

My wife had the trout -which came with Chorizo ravioli and mussels- after a few bites she pushed it to the side. At that point, I had to try it. She was correct! the ravioli was spicy but there was no chorizo taste and the ravioli was hard at the edges. The trout was dried and over cooked and it lacked flavor. The mussels were unappealing and dried. Price point for this dish should be between $14-$17.

Although we did eat the dishes, none of us were really satisfied; instead, we sat with disappointment. We have been there before twice and the food was pretty that good. I guess we went there because we expected to have a pretty good dinner but instead had an average dinner. Our server did ask about the "First bites" but at that time we had just had a small sample of the food.
I/we couldn't had given her a fair assessment at that moment. I asked for the bill and was expecting a "How was everything" question from our server but she never did otherwise, I would have told her what I just wrote here. For that amount of money, I would have had an awesome dinner at River Café.

My trip to Market was fantastic! Loved the funky contemporary/modern look to the place. I thought the chalkboard bathroom stalls were such a cool idea, keeps the guest engaged even in the bathroom! The service was exceptional, all smiles and very timely and organized. Now the food.. I had the duck tacos, dill pickle wings, and pork belly potato skins. Everything was delectable, those wings are my new favourite for sure. Plating/presentation was lovely, looked very classy. I really enjoyed being able to watch the chefs preparing my meal, very talented people. I read up on their website about their philosophy and it very much coalines with my own, locally sourced and made from scratch. GREAT job Market!

I am shocked by the ratings for Market because my 2 experiences here have been wonderful! They have a great wine list with lots of Okanagan wines, which I love. My meals have always been excellent and the service great. I am a little annoyed they seem to book the whole restaurant for reservations and as a walk in at 5:00, with an empty restaurant, my only seating choice was on the patio (it was pretty cold outside). But the food here was still worth sitting in the cold.
Hitting The Sauce
The Chen really enjoyed the duck confit and the salad. He thought the salad had the perfect amount of red wine vinaigrette. The salad had a heavy dusting of cheese, sliced almonds and a ton of dried cranberries. The greens tasted fresh, like it was just plucked from the garden.

Calgary is slowly getting more higher end restaurants and Market is at the top of this list. You can watch your food being prepared over the flame on the large gas grill where the cooks prepare everything fresh. I shared a meal here with two other colleagues: 24oz ribeye steak with black risotto and sautéed wild mushrooms. It was worth every penny...

Market has been one of the earlier restaurants in Calgary that emphasizes a farm to table approach, promising dishes made from the freshest ingredients. The interior is done quite well, and Market has done a great job at creating a unique atmosphere in such a limited space, featuring an open kitchen, as well as a patio for warmer days. I decided to try the burger, which I found to be very flavourful and juicy. The beef was cooked medium rare, and each bite was definitely a delicious experience. I also found the service to be quite friendly as well, with a server coming to check on is every so often. One reservation that I do have about this restaurant is that the price points and portion sizes seemed to be a bit contrasted. Looking around at some of the other dishes, I was surprised to see that some of the more expensive dishes were quite small in proportion to the price. Will definitely be back to try some of the other items though!

There is a big movement in Calgary in the recent years towards local and sustainable sourced food to promote healthy eating. We began seeing many restaurants with a focus on quality of life and interest in building relationships with local farmers has come to dominate the food marketplace.

I have to admit, we weren't attracted to this restaurant based on recommendations or reviews, but rather had a gift certificate to use up. The menu items didn't seem particularly fancy, but we ended up having one of the most fantastic meals in a long time. The service was a bit slow, but besides that, the complexity of flavors in each dish really elevated our experience there.

What we ordered:
Homemade root beer + homemade cream soda - The root beer was definitely a new experience having a strong nutmeggy beginning, and a rooty, earthy finish. I'm not sure what constitutes a "cream soda", but this drink was very caramel-like, tasted a bit like candy. These homemade drinks add a nice novelty factor to the menu and definitely got our tastebuds thinking.

Pan seared scallops - Although the scallop portions weren't large (total of 2) and were mildly overcooked, the layering of flavors is done with such consideration. The purple cabbage was done three ways (deep fried, pickled and a paste) which showcased those scallops like i'd never eaten something so delicious before. Fantastic job of the cabbage!

red wine and bone marrow hand rolled gnocchi - The marrow was simmered at a low low temperature which gave it a rich brown butter, nutty flavor. Upon my first bite, I got hit of tang from some vinegar addition, which cuts the richness of the marrow and finish with a taste of red wine flavor.

Braised beef with BC mushrooms and truffle cappeletti - needless to say, this beef was tender, pull apart and moist. sooo good! This dish also showcased mushrooms in three ways: mushroom puree and BC mushrooms, which complimented the beef, and finally, the unsuspecting cappelletti pasta waiting to blow your tastebuds away with this incredible burst of creamy truffle explosion. This dish was the star of the night for sure.
Besides some minor technical errors, the taste was great, the plating looked like artwork. This restaurant is certainly not for the faint of heart.
Will be returning!

There is a big movement in Calgary in the recent years towards local and sustainable sourced food to promote healthy eating. We began seeing many restaurants with a focus on quality of life and interest in building relationships with local farmers has come to dominate the food marketplace.

We stopped in for dessert one night and it was on point! This place serves Fratello coffee, so that's a big positive. We would definitely go back here given how good the dessert and service was. The menu looks great!

So we went back for dinner here recently and it met our expectations! It was taco night and they were delicious at $3 each. We each ordered a separate main course, and none of us were disappointed. Special mention to Market for bringing out a complimentary gnocchi (which was amazing) because our mains were a bit slow coming out. The decor of the place is pretty cool too, with some awesome feature plates.

Great casual fine-ish dining. Expect great food and a relaxed atmosphere. The scallop entrée for $17 was pricey for the portion - two scallops. However, they were cooked perfectly and I liked the different textures of the dish with the red cabbage, puree and ricotta cheese. The Market Braised Beef was my favourite dish of the night with really rich flavours. I only wished there was more jus/sauce accompanying the dish. The beef was tender. The mushrooms and mushroom puree was delicious. The truffle cappelletti was a burst of creaminess but as I left one till the end, it was a bit rubbery by the time I ate it. The kale added a freshness to the dish. We shared the salted butter bar for dessert with blueberry spheres, basil sauce. The butter bar was like a soft cheesecake with a biscuit base. The blueberry spheres helped to cut through the richness of the bar. The crunchiness of the brittle added texture. It was a great dessert. I liked the basil sauce but when you put a bit of everything together, you couldn't taste it at all which was a pity. I had dinner with a large group (14 of us) for a birthday celebration. We had attentive service. Our waitress made sure we had enough water and drinks to tide us through waiting in between courses. The wait time in between each course was ok as the restaurant was busy on a Saturday night.

One adorable little restaurant. Their tacos are so good because the shells are actually crepes. Their hand-rolled gnocchi is also a must-try. They always have a seasonal pasta as well and the best part if they use locally source ingredients as much as possible!

Solid meal. Nice combinations that I wouldn't do or get at home. Had the duck, turkey, and beef tacos as part of Taco Tuesday. The turkey taco was the one we were least intrigued by and yet it was the most enjoyable - I like surprises like that.
Had beet salad - solid but not overly memorable. The hand-rolled pasta was great. Desserts were a bit underwhelming but satisfying. The servers were friendly, present, but not over-attentive. The pacing of the service was good - - not rushed, had a great visit over supper, but not exhausting long. It was a solid meal and I'd be back - - but it wasn't outstanding.

The restaurant has the philosophy to produces as many ingredients in-house as possible. For the items they can't make in house, they source locally and sustainably from producers. While I admire their philosophy, the food was just not up to the standard. We went for weekend brunch and I had duck bennie. The duck fat hollandaise tasted really bland. The salad on the side had way too little vinaigrette dressing. The baby back bbq ribs were disappointingly dry as well. The dishes costed $18 each and we felt like we were being ripped off. I could have made that at home myself.

I had an important foodie double date on Monday August 24th and, as my original date had something come up, I had to scramble last minute to find myself a replacement. Luckily my foodie sidekick, Corinne, was free and thank goodness, because I couldn’t show up like a lone ranger to this date. I made reservations for Market through bookenda for 6:45pm. I don’t like to be late, but that evening I was running a bit behind. Fortunately traffic wasn’t too bad, and the couple that we were meeting understood. I walked into Market and, sitting patiently at the table in front of the door were A Couple of Couples, Mike and Jenna. I was a little nervous, but warmed up instantly. We chatted for a bit until Corinne arrived, and then began looking at the menu. I haven’t been to Market since they first opened, and I believe they have undergone some changes. I was excited to try their menu because I’ve been following their Co-Executive Chefs, Sean MacDonald (@seanymacd) and Alex Edmonson (@alexedmonson), on Instagram, as well as @darcyslane. I would describe their food as a beautiful artwork. Each dish had vibrant colours that made it pop

One of the better spots along 17th. Went here with a date, and had a couple of drinks and a light dinner. Everything was very good - not life-altering good, but very tasty. The cocktail menu is interesting without being too far out there - the only complaint I had here is that they've failed to update their website, so the menu online doesn't resemble what's actually available in the slightest. On the food front, the pork belly I ordered was nicely presented and cooked, and pretty much what you'd expect portion-wise from a restaurant of this sort. I wouldn't put this place quite on the level of Model Milk or even Farm, but it's a solid option. I will likely return.

Service is great! The atmosphere was not intimate for such a small space and I am not sure if I personally liked that. The food is quite pricey for some of their portions. Though the entree was quite filling and delicious (I had the halibut). I'm intrigued, and I would be back for more.
A Couple Of Couples
Entering Market I felt like we had walked into Cruella De Vil's living room luckily she was my favourite Disney Protagonist... she just wanted a nice jacket... is that so wrong? IS THAT SO WRONG TO WANT A NICE JACKET?!... but I digress...

The evening started with sweaty palms and nervous jitters as we were about to meet "@Lapetitteshar", of whom we are a big fan! We ordered the Gnocchi to start, and I gotta say... me likey the gnocchi, it was absolutely phenomenal, best I ever had! It was followed by a main course of pork belly, which I gotta say, if I wasn't a fan of Porky Pig before... I definitely am now! It made up for it's somewhat small portion by being accompanied by some of the best veggies I ever had! Typically, like most men, I eat only enough vegetables to trick Jenna into thinking I am healthy, but with these veggies, she didn't even need to double check my plate!

Overall, I enjoyed Market, I really wanted to use the phrase, "Called 'et' because 'et' missed the mark"... but unfortunately for my love of wordplay... Market hit its mark...

Market has gotten a few awards over the past couple of years, and the food is indeed pretty good: I love their Market Burger (picture) and Fried Chicken Sandwich, whilst the Fish Tacos are okay (picture). The tiny patio is a nice plus, and the inside of the restaurant looks really good. But as soon as it gets busy, it is SO loud you will have the hardest time to hear what the person sitting in front of you will say... that alone can be quiet annoying. So probably wouldn't recommend it for a romantic dinner, but if you want to enjoy the food on the patio on a sunny day, check this place out.
Rachel Sum
Very good food but expensive and comes in small portion. Great atmosphere and good service. Was in a table right in front of the kitchen and you can tell they are actually growing some greens there. Good quality food. Pork belly was really good but a bit too fatty, but their sauce is AWESOME! Duck tacos is the best as they put strawberry and some sort of sauce there to make it great taste! Love it!
CordovaPie
Slightly difficult to describe the atmosphere at Market, mix of people from flip flops to 9' heels, and from girls night out to boomers in suits on a double date! I would say everyone was cool with it too. Great exposed features inside the building and layout accomodated the variety of guests. The decor is earthy, natural & fresh. Menu options range to please all palettes. Since all ingredients are fresh and dishes made to order, if you have dietary concerns or allergies... No problem! If it's not on the menu...no problem! Must try for sure!

Went here for dinner with two friends on a rainy Wednesday evening. The restaurant was fairly empty so you would figure things would come fairly quick. Took a while for our waitress to come over and greet us but she brought us water and took our drink orders. After a good 15-20 mins our drinks came and we ordered food to share. We ordered 8 oysters start, and for the main the gnocchi, dill pickle wings, feature pasta, and some fries. Our food took a while to come out and you could tell it had been sitting because the sauces had started to set and were hardening. The only thing that was fresh was our wings. The entire time I saw the chefs coming out and getting a beverage from the bar, or chatting with friends. Our food was tasty but for that price, it should have came out hot. Not to mention our oysters were one of the last things to come out. Our fries were pretty sad looking - very over cooked. Our waitress was unbelievably slow and we saw our drinks sitting on the bar for 15 mins before she even brought them over. Markets only saving grace was the food is absolutely delicious. I will likely give it a shot again - hopefully the staff is more on their game.

Good restaurant but pricey. I've had the chicken and pasta, both were exceptional and very fresh. The restaurant has a fun interior and it's usually to grab a spot.

I've tried Market for both lunch and dinner, and I'm a little torn on the rating. The dinner was fantastic whereas the lunch was just okay.

We arrived late for dinner but they still allowed us to order appetizers and desserts. The duck confit was really good, and the plating for all the dishes were great. I remember being very impressed.

Lunch on the other hand was just okay at best. We entered the restaurant and the servers were standing at the bar (clear view of the entrance area) and it seemed they were too busy chatting to seat us or even greet us. Uh, sorry we came while you were busy.

We were just strolling along 17th for a walk and wanted to grab some light food, so we opted for the fish tacos and tomato salad. The fish in the mini crepes were really good, but I thought the broccoli was really off and didn't belong in the dish. The tomato salad was nothing special, it felt like something I could throw together at home. The patio is a nice little space, but it felt a bit cramped unless you are sitting on the wider couch area.

We've walked in a couple times when we were walking on 17th, but they always seem less than willing to serve us. If you don't want people walking in after a certain hour, how about you remove the sign up front?

I still want to give Market another try, as they have some dinner entrees that looked good and also breakfast I think. I like what the restaurant stands for, local and fresh food, so I really want to like this place. I guess my only tip is don't go for lunch and/or don't order what we did.
Scrumptiously Fit Food
It’s been one of the warmer hotter summers that we’ve seen in a long time here in Calgary and what better way than to celebrate with food and drinks on a patio. Market has launched their new summer menu and I was lucky enough to be amongst those that had a chance to sample some of their new dishes. Each course was wonderfully paired with delicious summer cocktails or delectable wine to really help showcase their flavours.
Christine McCormack
Such a great restaurant! They use wholesome fresh foods and everything is cooked and seasoned perfectly! We sat on the patio which was lovely but the interior is beautiful!
Snguy000
4 stars only. I have taken one off for inconsistency. I love their duck tacos however, sometimes they will be served quite large and other times, noticeably smaller. My friends who I go with every time agree. Food wise everything tastes delicious, must try the fries.
Tristan
We went for dinner on Mother's Day. It was awesome. The food was fantastic, fresh and creative. The atmosphere was great. So many new restaurants in Calgary feel crowded, this is not one of them. I also felt that the value was good for the quality and quantity of food we received. Definitely would do it again!
Noel Blix
Gave this place a second try after a realatively disappointing experience and I'm sorry to say this restaurant is consistent. Overpriced, over-promised and under-delivered. Will not return.
Paul Schmidt
Nice place but very expensive.. Stopped by this establishment to meet up with a few friends. Myself and my partner ordered two canned ciders which were from Ireland and ended up paying close to $30.00 for two canned drinks or 12.50 plus tip each. I've never paid this high of a price at a casual dining place for a canned drink which I might add costs about 7.50 down the Ave. This place is nice and trendy which means you will pay a lot!
Lisa Nguyen
Beautifully plated food to say the least! The interior design is very cool and trendy too. Definitely planning on coming back for a girls night - especially considering its awesome location on 17th Ave!
Sanher
The food was disappointing. I heard great things about Market but I found the chicken dish way too salty, the beet pasta (which was the pasta of the day) was bland and there were no vegetarian main dish options. The beet salad was very good as were the fries.

The server was short with us when we asked her a couple of questions about the menu.

Overall, not great. I wouldn't go back.
Brodie Barkway
I'm sure it'll be better next time. Went in for a quick birthday lunch recently and didn't have a great experience. Market is a bit of a distance from my office, but we figured we'd give it a shot. Reso at 12, and firstly, we didn't get our food until ~12:45. Steak sandwich was good (I was told), but the chicken sandwich wasn't great. The part of the chicken that was in the sandwich was very soggy, but the parts sticking out the side were nice and crispy-I wish the whole thing was like that. The fries were quite good, and the ketchup they make is rockin!
The staff also noticed how long the food took, and made sure we knew they were sorry about it which I thought was quite nice. Anyways, not a great experience, but I'm sure I'll be back to give it another shot.

Don't get the very low rating on Urbanspoon.... That restaurant is absolutely awesome and offers one of the best - if not the best - dining experience I had in Calgary.
Atmosphere? Check
Service? Flawless. The girls are lovely, friendly and efficient.
Food? Well. I can't say a lot about their appetizers as their duck tacos give me foodgasm everytime and I don't want to try anything else. I will. One day. Maybe.
The duck breast was cooked close to perfection and was tasty. The Octopus was great too.

Their homemade pop were very good. I think I tried all of them but the root beer (they were out :'( )
Cocktails are out of the beaten path and lead to a few surprises but none of them were bad.

I lived in France for a while, where good restaurants and fine dining are a common thing (and way cheaper also). I often surprise people when I say that the food scene in Calgary is great compared to other cities in Canada. And I always have Market on my mind when I tell people they are lucky to live in a city with such great restaurants.

If you live in YYC and never been to Market, something is wrong and you need to fix it.

Amazing. Must Try Place.. It's an overall all around awesome restaurant. The Market Burger is amazing!

Excellent food and service!. Don`t get why the rating is only 63% - should be much higher. Had a dinner here for my birthday with a large group - they were able to accommodate last minute changes to my party size. Food took a bit long to come out not surprisingly considering the quantity of food that was ordered, but the dishes we`re excellent. I had the duck dish and it was fantastic! Brought in a cake and cupcakes and they served it without any issues as well.

Would highly recommend this place!

Great Experience and Food..avoid their dirty gin martini. I've been to this place maybe six or seven times, and I've generally had a great experience where the food has been creative and delicious. It's not a cheap place, and I've noticed that the food does take awhile to come out. I ate once at the bar and really enjoyed chatting with the bartender who made me an excellent cocktail and one of the chefs came out to offer me their house made kettle corn and a sampling of their chocolate truffles. Experiences like that where people are just friendly and exhibit a personality definitely makes me want to come back. I have to admit however, I had a dirty gin martini there the other week and it was awful so maybe just don't get that.

It was an interesting experience to say the least at Market. It was my first time for dinner last night, for a friend's birthday dinner, and her first time as well.

The first sign of something wrong, 3 of us ordered the smoked pork belly, to be told 5 minutes after placing our order that they were out.. Booh!

Secondly, my 2nd choice meal had to be remade for some reason, I ate 8-10 minutes after all my dinner companions had received and half finished their meals. 2nd Booh!

There was no manager apology or explanation. Just a lame server apology, and we weren't even sure if I was to be comp'd my order, for the terrible experience, until the bill arrived at the end. 3rd Booh!

The food was only 50/50
Some tasty original food ideas, but the 5 of us foodies found it to be all over the place in terms of flavour and consistency.

The steak tartare was bland and needed salt or something, the risotto was a tad over cooked with too many ideas competing for your palate, the mushroom toast was yummy, but ridiculous as a share, it gets soggy and hard to cut. The duck tacos were amazing( thankfully) but the Beet Salad was only good but not outstanding.

I had the chicken. Yummy flavours and perfectly cooked barley, when it eventually arrived. However, the chicken had a strange dense compressed texture that reminded me of ham half-way through eating it.

My friends steak was perfectly cooked, but I found her potato side unbearably salty .

Dessert was good, but at this point the whole experience was just a lets get through this-- kind of feeling.

So 1 star off for each Booh, and out of the 2 stars left, only a 50/50 on food quality.

I appreciate the concept and expense that goes into creating local sustainable food, but for 1000$ for food, prosecco, drinks and dessert for 5-- the experience left me and all of us disappointed for a first visit. I probably won't return, and I won't recommend this place based on inconsistent-sometimes-bland food and service.
Diana
Birthday blues. Celebrating my friends birthday here today, when we first arrive we had a nice welcome from the front hostesses. However, it went downhill from there. Our waitress was rude and the food was too salty. It took over two hours for the food to come out. Not a good place to have a big group.
Hungry Hungry Hippos
Love the pasta and can't wait to come back and try a sandwich. The homemade ginger ale was amazing. I have been twice now. Lunch was a great spot for a business meeting and dinner on the weekend was fun with live music. The service is always great. One of my favourite places in Calgary.

Amazing. Staff is friendly and attentive. Food is fresh and delicious. The desserts are to die for.

Market menu. Duck wings crunchy zesty
Angus steak with zippy piripiri sauce yummy
Hotpot of porkbelly, ling cod, diakon tasty & generous.

Everything about our experience was wonderful, our server was lovely and knowledgeable. We were told when we arrived there was only one order of the crab and pork perogies left so we ordered them immediatley. Our server returned to tell us there wasn't a full order left but they had two perogies that the kitchen sent out for us to try- which were delicious! We had the pasta dish with lamb meatballs, the side of beets, and the chorizo and octopus. Everything was incredible but the octopus was my favourite!
The only thing I could say is that the restaurant was very bright and I would have liked a more "romantic" vibe.
Thanks Market!

Poor service. Came here with some colleagues on a Saturday night. Waited for about five minutes till someone came to sit us. At that time my colleagues wanted to leave due to slow service but I convinced them to stay. Waitress came right up and gave us water. Then that was the last we saw of her. We waited and waited and then we left. Very slow service.

Beautiful space, fantastic service and the food was excellent. We had the yam fritters with a jalapeño aioli, gnocchi and sous vide filet with carrot purée and arugula mash. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal - everything was beautifully presented (so colourful!) and the meat and carrot purée were especially tasty. Brussels sprouts were undercooked so very tough but we were so full from the food, it didn't matter. Good artisan cocktail list and very reasonable and varied price list. I will be back next time I'm in town!

Service made me feel VIP. Went in to Market after a long day at work. Hostess is lovely- while taking me to the bar top she engaged me asking me how my day was. Genuine and kind. The gentlemen behind the bar took great care of me. Had the duck appetizer followed by the Salmon- Wow. definitely beats anything I could have made at home and gave me a nice change. Great wine and fair pricing. The GM and chef even took time to come and speak to me on several occasions, such creativity, passion and great service! Made me feel like a real VIP.

Dining out is a treat that for many of us just becomes habit, many of us forget about the experience, the small details. Having a meal cooked and served to you can be more comforting than any gift. Market excelled on every detail. Will recommend to everyone who will listen. Fantastic job.
Andrewb001
Best food in Calgary. I visit Market as often as I can, and I've never had a bad meal here. The burgers are amazing -- they grind their own meat and the quality definitely shows. I'm also a fan of the fish "tacos", with tempura tuna wrapped in the scallion pancakes. Delicious! Definitely a highlight along 17th Ave.
Barbara Buszka
Love love love. This place has been on my list to visit for awhile. Now that I finally went I can't wait to go back!!! Their drinks are innovative and amazing. The mushroom tart will make your mouth and stomach happy! The duck tacos are just as great! I found that the 3 that come with the order is the perfect amount. The flavors are bold and rich, so I was glad that I didn't order any extra. I can't wait to come back and try out the rest of the menu. Don't even hesitate..GO!
Hopelessly Hungry
Finally had dinner here and was very happy I did so, the menu has changed a little heavier as the produce has changed to a fall seasonal growth, heavy or not, was very tasty! Service was excellent. The desserts were strange and wonderful and fratello coffee as a finish was perfect. The cinnamon muesli under the very fishy halibut was my husbands dish, and it was not a big hit at our table, but the stand out dish was the Lamb Angliotti. It was perfection!
No More Gluten For This Newton
Mehhh..... Service - Absolutely amazing
Food - Just ok, nothing special
Price - Overpriced
Gluten free options were ok, but overall nothing spectacular... I'd rather spend the same amount at a restaurant with great food.
Leanne Vogel
Yes! So awesome and accommodating. Everything was fabulous - the service, the music, the space itself. So bright and open with an amazing summer breeze coming in off the patio. Our entire group; all 6 of us, ordered the Market Burger. Each of us blown away with the quality. Dairy-free, gluten-free, grain-free, no problem. They custom made my order to perfection. And the fries... the fries! I would go back just for the fries and a bit of their housemade ketchup... daily. Would that be excessive? Loved it!
Bobdeutscher
Great meal! Stopped by for lunch and ordered the meatballs, and fish tacos. Both dishes were super delicious, service was very prompt! Definitely NOT "60%" , hopefully the Urbanspoon rating catches up with how good this restaurant actually is!

Great ambience, good service, okay food. Went out to Market last night for dinner with several friends.
I really enjoyed the "feel" of the restaurant. Our waitress was good.
Our group ordered the following items off the menu:
Porkbelly with shellfish platter - pork belly was really dry and over cooked, gnocchi was great
Pork chop special - good flavours
Salmon - over cooked, but side elements had a good earthy flavour
House Burger -was probably the best dish out of all them, really good!

For the price you pay per entree you expect it to be cooked appropriately, but unfortunately most of the dishes were dry and overcooked.

We might go back...

Great experience. We went to MARKET for dinner in December 2013. I usually don't write reviews but I'm so confused as to why the average rating is so low. Our experience was really good.

We didn't have reservations but were able to get two seats at the bar. The host and bartender were very friendly.
My partner had a Caesar and to this day, he still says it's the best one he ever had (the pickled homemade garnishes - quail egg!!!). He often talks about going to MARKET just for the caesar.
We both shared the pork belly and had some brussels sprouts on the side - too much food for the both of us (we shouldn't have ordered the side dish) but everything was impeccable.
I have family visiting from Europe in July and I'm planning on going back so they can taste the amazing local food MARKET has to offer.
Markus
Exceptional. At a present 59% like rate i cannot figure it out. This has been our third trip to Market and each time the service and food has been exceptional. the quality of food vs price is very well weighted and the service is attentive and knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend this to anyone and will definitely be back. the only slight criticism i have is that for the price of a pint of beer i would expect an 18-20OZ pint not a 16.
Hybrow
Shocking. How did Market ever get such a low rating? We were there on the weekend and it was absolutely amazing. At a table of four, we had 2 beef, 1 chicken, 1 pork (along with 3 appetizers) and absolutely EVERYTHING was great. it was definitely a case of "here try this" all around the table, and there was not one thing that we tried that wasnt good.

I was reading reviews and someone else mentioned that the portion sizes were small, but we did not find this to be the case. Yes, its expensive, but its not like you are getting a big mac, i am truly shocked at the fact that you received such a low rating. I am going to get the 3 people i was with to also leave reviews, at least bump you up a bit :)

Simply do not understand the negative vibe this place gets!. We've been to this restaurant three times in the past year (including this past weekend), and everytime has been great! We had the Salt mussels (I think that's the title), and I had the sirloin for myself. I could see the service going up and down at times, but truthfully, it's never been enough to keep me away, as the food is the reason I constantly come back. If you do go, try the mussels forsure!

Good concept but poorly executed. There are much better locally sourced restaurants to visit in Calgary.. I was finally able to try this restaurant after wanting to for months. I love the idea of a restaurant using fresh and local ingredients. It is really admirable and I was really looking forward to eating at Market. We went for Sunday lunch. The restaurant was not very busy and the decor was simple and elegant. I really appreciated the fresh herbs in the window and the homemade sodas on the drink menu. Despite all of this, I still do not have a good review to write. There are too many restaurants in Calgary to settle for a place like this.

We were seated and waited before ordering our drinks and food. It was over half an hour later that our drinks were brought to the table. Our waitress walked back and forth, passing our table various times and never seemed to notice the lack of drinks. Upon finally bringing drinks to the table, the waitress was not apologetic. She actually commented that we should have said something to her about it instead of just sitting there...hmm. I was not impressed by the homemade cream soda. It was okay but not great. We sat patiently with our long awaited drinks. At this point, we had been at the restaurant on a non-busy Sunday lunch hour for over 40 minutes, had just gotten drinks and had seen 2 tables come in after us and promptly receive their food and drinks. Of course, they had a different server. We asked our server about the food, she said it would be right out. 10 minutes later, she brings a basket of french fries and says there was a mix up in the kitchen and the food would be out in "3 minutes". Again. Not apologetic. 10 minutes later, the food comes out. Our waitress did not deliver the food and after almost an hour waiting for our lunch, it doesn't come out with so much of an apology. The first bites of the food were sub par. Glorified pub food in my opinion. Great because it's local, but by no means a delicious meal and certainly not worth an hour wait.

None of us were impressed with the food. We felt downright disrespected by the server. Overall, a poor experience. Definitely will not be back and would not recommend this place to anyone.
Irish
Unfortunately I think the rating reflects the restaurant in this case. I've never left a review so it must have not been a good experience. We went off hours, mid-afternoon, so I can't say the service was bad due to it being too busy as there were empty tables. Ordered drinks and meals from the female server, and thank goodness another male server brought us water at the beginning because it took 40 minutes for our server to realize we didn't have our drinks yet! We watched other people come, order, get their meals before we even got our drinks. She was even at the table beside ours numerous times and completely ignored the fact we didn't have our drinks. We shouldn't have to ask where our beverages are, that is her job to keep track of her tables (I worked in a restaurant for 6 years so I've been on that side of things). Then she showed up with a bowl of fries and said there was a mix-up in the kitchen. A bowl of fries does not an apology make. She said our meals would then be out in a few minutes, but it was probably 15 to 20. We took one bite, the food was sub-par at best, and when our server came back to inquire how it was we indicated our displeasure at the situation and took her option to leave rather then eat the food that we waited an hour for.
This is the type of situation where a manager should have made an appearance, rather than the fake "sorry" we received from the server. She wasn't polite or apologetic with the situation at all. There are so many more restaurants in Calgary I would not return to this one and will definitely be telling others about our experience.

Great good, poor service. The food was amazing!!! Unfortunately we didn't know there were specials, because the server didn't give them to us.... overall she just wasn't a great server. Aside from that though, the food as all quite good.

Market Restaurant. This was a very good dining experience. The restaurant is lovely and the food was very good.

Great Great Great!. We went to Market a couple weekends ago with a large group (A mix of 10 Calgary bloggers, photographers and stylists). The experience was great!! We got the "$25 Three Course Prefix Menu" and I couldn't have nicer things to say about it! Where in downtown Calgary can you get that much food for $25??? The food tasted amazing and the service was great. This wasn't my first time at Market and it will not be my last!

SUPPORT LOCAL FOOD BY EATTING AT THE MARKET. My experience was GREAT at the market.

I ordered the Kale Salad and just loved it!! I wish I remember my servers name because she was the one who recommend the meal. The hen egg on top was weird but a good weird!!! I really like trying new things and I thought it was a great meal!!! I really liked the cheese on it!

My mother ordered the Fried Chicken Sandwich and she really liked it too. The only thing she thought was it could have had a little less batter on it but other than that it was really good (I stole a few bites)! And the house made ketchup was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good.

The waitress was awesome. She answered all of our questions and was very polite and informative.

It’s good to know that you use local ingredients. Its important to support our community. I understand that my meal was probably not all GMO free but I really like your concept (hard to find anywhere to eat that is GMO-free).


I was sooooo happy with my visit I promise to drag my boyfriend there for dinner one night. I am excited to try your foods on the dinner menu! Looking at it I think I would try the tomato tart or the agnolotti or the tuna crudo or the market fish... or the duck breast.... Wow.... Your dinner menu looks so good!!!!!

A good friend of mine suggested your restaurant and I want you to know I will spread the word of this awesome place. The next time when my team at work wants to go to lunch I will throw out your name. My boss is a big health nut too and I think this is a place that might appeal to her!

Delicious Cocktail. Had a delicious meal on a Monday night, actually quite a few tables for a Monday. Liked the atmosphere, cocktail list and food was great. Service was just a little slow, would have had a second drink if offered in time. Try the elderflower cocktail, yum!

Three of us enjoyed a nice dinner at
Market this evening. The meatballs and duck tacos were great, the lamb burger special was tasty so was the chocolate caramel dessert. Good wine, great service.

Fabulous. Great atmosphere, beyond friendly and attentive staff and great food. We'll be back as it's just around the corner. Loved it!!!!

Pleasant Dining Experience. Upon the first few bites, I was somewhat in love with Market's fresh dishes. The two appetizers of the octopus taco and the special feature pancake had some of the best pastry I've had in a savoury meal. While the tastes on each were pretty complex, the pastry was soft and warm providing a nice texture in each bite. The ingredients on each dish were well-used, lots of different flavours with nuts, vegetables and meats (the octopus was really soft!).

The mains were just as good. My Bison Brisket was as fresh and intricate as my appetizers, the high quality bison meat fell apart softly and was complimented with great side purees and vegetables.

Everything was packed with fresh ingredients that you can see grown right in the kitchen. It's a really unique concept that really works for the Market experience. The chef's creations made sure you had a pleasant experience with each bite with nothing bland or disappointing.

The servers were trying really hard to please us. Very helpful in recommending dishes, making sure we had everything we needed, and engaging in conversation throughout the meal. It was pretty enjoyable and refreshing.

It seems that you either hate or love Market, but from what I've experienced, it was a pleasant time that would definitely bring me back.

Suprised by the reviews on here. We had a very large group of 14 in to Celebrate a birthday and the food and staff at Market were nothing short of wondeful to all of us. They called several times leading up to the event to ensure our numbers were correct and ended up helping us add a few late RSVP'ers to our group.

The food was fresh, innovative and excellent. While it wasn't cheap, it certainly falls into standard pricing for the Calgary restaurant scene. And the cocktails were easily some of the best we've ever had in the city.

I can't wait to return!

The food suffers in favor of being trendy. I was incredibly disappointed in this restaurant. It was beautiful when we walked in- I love the decor and ambiance, however it suffered from overpriced food, disappointing flavors, and service that was slow and rude.

I was here with seven other people on a Friday night. We had made a reservation and similar to the experience of previous reviewers- we were told we only had 2 hours to dine. This ended up being okay because no one wanted to stay longer than we had to.

The evening started off in a bad way when our server was being told about a severe allergy- instead of handling it appropriately by bringing it to management's attention or speaking directly to the chef, he simply said, "oh I know you have no problem with anything on the menu". (the lady with the allergy had already spotted an ingredient on the menu that contradicted this). She was clearly not going to accept this response and had to search out management herself to ensure the waiters ignorance wasn't going to cost her a trip to the hospital. From there on he was slow to come around to the table, ask if anyone wanted more drinks and at the end was pushy about making sure that final lady to pay the bill tipped on the full amount, that did not include GST and said this about four times to her.

I will say that I enjoyed the duck taco appetizer and the ketchup they provided for the french fries, but everything else was unimpressive. I ordered the chicken breast, a gamble in any restaurant and not a protein I normally go for, and unfortunately Market was no different than others in that they overcooked it. The feature seafood dish was a massive disappointment. They served the small portion on a giant plate, but put the food solely on one side. If you are going to serve such a small portion, maybe don't make it look even smaller by placing it next to a large amount of empty space.

Overall the flavour of the dishes was nothing impressive. I tried bites of the bison tartare (it needed salt and texture) and the pork belly and scallops (okay but nothing special at that price).

I would not go back to this restaurant, nor would I ever recommend dining here. There is so much amazing food in this city that it would be a shame to waste your appetite on what they serve.

Best new restaurant. I can't believe the dismal approval of this place. I have been three times now and each time I enjoy the food, and ambiance more. I love; watching the cute chefs, the teriums and the blackboard bathrooms (Haha I sound like I am 15.) Really though the food is great and it is a fun atmosphere. Don't let the haters stop you from trying this unique new restaurant out.

Food was great, attitude was not. We went to Market to celebrate a friend's birthday last night. The food was fantastic and we really enjoyed it. However, our experience was tainted before we even made it to the restaurant. We made the 6:00pm reservation a few weeks ago. Yesterday, we had a message in the late afternoon to confirm our reservation and to tell us that we could only stay until 8:00pm as Open Table had overbooked the restaurant. When we called back, we were told that next time, we should call the restaurant directly to make the reservation so this would not happen. All the blame was put on the online reservations system. My husband argued that we had planned to have a special dinner and did not want to be rushed. The response from the restaurant was less than pleasant. We were upset before we even made it to our table. The service was very good although we were unsure if they were attentive or just trying to get us out of there. In the end, we stayed until 8:30pm with no one asking us to leave. The moral of the story is to call the restaurant for your reservation (which seems highly inconvenient) to ensure that you can enjoy your evening.
