When I was in Calgary for business last week, my colleagues and I ate here. It was outstanding!!! A couple of us are gluten intolerant and we were pleased that they can modify about 85% off the menu, so your options are endless! I had an amazing beef tenderloin in gf mushroom cream sauce with a side of gf pasta. I absolutely recommend it!
Best restaurant in Calgary! The service is exceptional, the food is authentic and the ambience is cozy. You are made to feel as though you are dining in Niko’s home. Everyone at Niko’s takes pride in providing an exceptional experience and they’ve always gone so far beyond our expectations! If you’ve not eaten here, you’re missing out. Book a reservation though! It’s worth it!
Eight of us celebrated my birthday at Niko's yesterday. We had a 5:00 reservation and needed to be out by 6:45 or so. Our waiter started by asking if we needed to be somewhere, so we told him, and he paced the service and the meal accordingly. The restaurant was surprisingly busy for that time — mostly other large groups — but the service remained attentive and very friendly. The food was amazing, as always, and they kindly made "normal" spaghetti for my niece. I can't recommend Niko's enough.
My first visit to Niko's was fantastic. Niko was so hospitable, Ali was a wonderful waiter and Niko's daughter was helpful in choosing a wine which we loved. The food was tasty and piping hot. Will definitely be going back.
Small, cozy, casual, and really delicious food every time. You have to love a place where the owner is hands on and interested in your experience.
Best Italian in Calgary. My wife and I have never been disappointed. Bruschetta is to die for. Our go to restaurant for a night out. Niko is incredibly friendly and always comes out to greet us. Would recommend this place to absolutely everyone.
Amazing meal and terrific service. Niko came by several times to make sure we were satisfied. Visiting Calgary Arny, and not knowing where to eat, we got very lucky. I'll be back the next time (and every time) I visit the city. Can't go wrong here!

Can’t say enough good things about this place! Have been on a few occasions with different groups. The food is always amazing (proper authentic Italian), the ambiance is perfect the owner and staff are always so friendly.
One of my favourite Italian restaurants. The portion sizes here are HUGE compared to most places. I live the antipasto platter, you basically get to try everything and it's great for sharing. Pasta is cooked perfectly and ingredients are fresh.
Based on the Manicotti I had, I gave 4.5! Buonissimo!!! Complimentary baguette is toasted with garlic and olive oil! I would prefer fresh and soft bread to dip olive oil myself though. Will definitely go back to try other dishes!!!
Delicious Italian at a reasonable price. Small so make a reservation or go early. Attentive, friendly, helpful staff. If I lived in Kensington I'd be there weekly! Easy to park on streets nearby. A definite bistro to return to. Not cheap.
What an awesome authentic Italian restaraunt ! Seriously a gem ! We came for lunch and I tried the penne con vodka, usually for lunch I am not very hungry and package most to go home but I ate the entire plate, the noodles were cooked perfectly al dente. I will have to come back for a dinner and wine !
I really enjoyed the food, service, and ambience at Nikos. We were greeted by the owner as soon as we walked in and our waiter was at the table a few minutes later to bring us water and ask us for drink orders. We had the calamari as a starter and the chicken parmigiana and cannelloni as mains. My favourite was the calamari - one of the best dishes I've had in Calgary! Slightly spicy and so delicious! The cannelloni was delicious as well, the portion size was pretty decent. I didn't love my chicken parmigiana because I found it to be a tad too salty. Other than everything was wonderful - I will definitely be back! Next time I'll probably just have two orders of calamari!
Great small bistro in Kensington! Perfect for a date night! Food and service were both amazing! The owner comes around to all tables which is a nice touch! We had the special (braised beef short rib with risotto) and the braised pollo parpadelle pasta and both were delicious! Definitely one of the top Italian spots in YYC!

I put this place on my list of restaurants to eat a couple years back and finally got around to it as I moved to the area!
I was pleasantly surprised! The food was delicious, and a bit different than other Italian places I have tried. It's also modestly priced for the quantity, quality and flavour! The feel is a bit classier restaurant, with a family run flare.
Niko (I think?), was also working just as any other staff member. He even cleared our plates, and made sure to catch us at the door as we left to have a good evening! Which was such a nice addition! It's great to see honest man bringing a great restaurant to the streets of Kensington!

Friendly environment! Niko himself comes out and helps entertain. Love the carbonara there, haven't had anything like that yet in Calgary. Dessert wise, I personally love the homemade cheese cake. Portion is enough for two people. Took my best friend there for her birthday and was not disappointed. Will be coming back !!
Nikos is great value for good food! The prices are pretty cheap relative to other Italian places in Calgary but the food is a lot better. I've tried various pasta dishes and all have been good. Portion sizes are on the large side (which makes it good value!). Cute little restaurant that gets very busy on weekends, so make resos. The only downside is the staff... In particular I think the manager (might be "Nikos" himself?). Tall, broad, balding guy. He's nice-ish but always seems to have an air of arrogance or annoyance to him. Overall, the food is worth a visit!
My husband and I ate here last Saturday night. We were both extremely impressed!!! The ambience is great, the food is fantastic!!! We both expected to go home with leftovers, because we didn't want to eat too much, but we couldn't stop. It was exquisite!!! I am celiac, and they were more than accommodating. I had the carbonara, it was the best I've ever tasted!! Not to mention the BEST gluten-free pasta I've ever had!! I was so excited that they actually had something aside from penne. It was also corn pasta, which is so much better than rice. So much more flavor!! My husband couldn't say enough about his as well. He had the spaghetti with their homemade sausage. We both can't wait to go back!!!!!!

We stopped in at Nico's on a whim tonight, and the restaurant was full (on a Wednesday night). The staff was very friendly and helpful. They let us know that a table would be freeing up soon, and before we knew it, were seated.
We were not too hungry, so everyone had pasta. All of the dishes were excellent. My Penne Con Vodka was my favourite, but I would have been just as happy with the Gnocci or the Manicotti that my family had.
I will be back, the sooner the better.
AMAZING. Pasta came out extremely hot and delicious. Grand mariner banana dessert was excellent. This restaurant definitely makes you feel you at home, as the owner (or someone in the family I presume?) came over multiple times to check on us. A must stop if you're craving Italian and are in Calgary :).
A nice cozy and intimate place. Food was absolutely delicious from appetizer to desert. The most outstanding part of this dining experience was the owner, Niko, who was walking from table to table making sure everything was perfect. I am definitely returning here, with friends and family. Number 1 in my books!
This restaurant is amazing! The staff were fantastic, and treated my young daughters princesses. The food is great, the calamari is by far the best in the city.

Niko's can only be described in two words: the bee's knees! Or bomb.com whatever tickles your fancy.
I have been here once and had a great great experience! It was an amazing atmosphere, felt cozy and inviting. This ambiance was complimented even more by Niko and his staff! Niko is an amazingly gracious man, who you can see loves and takes pride in his restaurant, is keen on providing a great experience for his diners and loves feedback from the customers. Our waitress was also amazing nice, funny and efficient. Niko and his staff are definitely a part of magic of this place.
And if that wasn't enough the food is also to die for. The rave about the calamari is no lie, it was amazing. There was four of us and I can't remember what everyone ordered but I got the Salmone Limone which was heavenly and complimented well by the reisling. And don't get me going on the cheesecake. It was the perfect consistency: rich, creamy and not too heavy. The berry compote on top was the cherry on top, a little pun intended.
Great great place for date night or just getting together with the friends. Definitely definitely trying to visit Niko's again in the future.
Best Italian in the City! i suggest everyone go and try it at some point, so far every time I have been there it has been an excellent atmosphere, incredible service and exquisite food. Not to mention the prices are very reasonable! Niko Treats you like family every time you go in, and yes he remembers you by name! That kind of exceptional service should be recognized and I am glad it has been. the guy makes you feel like a VIP. Cant say enough good about it to serve it justice.
Supporting great local restaurants like this one is what makes Calgary unique, and such a great place to live in!

Niko's is a must-do if you're down in Kensington because the food is simply exceptional and it's served by an attentive owner who makes sure you walk away happy. I was a "grumpy cat"-turned-"guy smiley" after he refilled our wine when my over exuberant gesticulations (it's an Italian place) toppled our bottle onto the floor and its contents all over. We were a party of 4 and all enjoyed our meals and the can't-miss calamari that comes refreshingly without the over-breading treatment that so many other joints seem to think calamari requires. Caprese delish too. My steak was perf.
Nice little gem in Kensington... Great atmosphere! Amazing food! You have to try the calamari it is to die for, we went off other recommendations. We both had the veal it was tender and melt in your mouth, even the sides we're tasty . We will be back for sure !
Cozy little Italian place with consistently good food.
The calamari here is the best - you'll see it at almost every table. It has a tomato sauce with a bit of a kick on it that makes it different from elsewhere.
I always opt for the manicotti because I love the cheese. It's yummy without being a greasy gross kind of cheesiness.
Chocolate mousse here is the best. I'm not a big fan of mousse, but I always get it every time I'm here. It looks like a small portion, but it's really rich and heavy that it's good to share for two (or even three!)
Recommend making resos to avoid being disappointed because it's a smaller place in Kensington.
I like the atmosphere of this restaurant. It's got warm lighting and the servers are professional. Had the best moscato dessert wine here (see picture). The lamb pasta was very good. Fall off the bone lamb. Yumm
Had the Nickos salad. Very good food and the server was nice. It was quite for a Friday lunch hour but it was raining out. Will come back for dinner some time.

Great!! Make a reservation to be sure you get a table.. The first thing we noticed was the aroma that greeted you upon first entering the restaurant. I'm glad we had reservations as it would have been so disappointing have not been able to get a table. The restaurant is small and busy, but the waiters were very attentive and pleasant. Food was delicious, calamari a must! Deserts all made in house and the banana's and grand marnier was the best! Will definitely go back!
Calamari is the BOM. Nice place, friendly service and great food, had the Calamari for a starter then ordered another round for desert! The spagettini carbonara was the best i have had anywhere.

Awesome experience!! Went there for a friend's birthday and had the best time. Food and wine were both incredible. Great price for the caliber of the meal. Staff was knowledgeable and friendly. My First time here, I'm currently sitting at the bar...sipping on great wine after an amazing meal. I'm pretty picky with my Italian and was pleasantly surprised by the amazing meal! One of the best penne arrabiata sauces I've had in Calgary. The eggplant appetizer was great too. Chicken was cooked perfectly tender. A very sweet vibe, genuine service. I see myself become a regular here quickly. Strongly recommend it!

Exceptional Experience !!!. This is our first time at Niko's Bistro, We ordered the calamari, coconut shrimp to start with caprese salad and caesar salad, it was very good. They usually take the appies order first and wait until you are done those before they start your entries to ensure you are getting fresh of the freshest. I like that concept so you know your entree is not waiting on a hot plate as your catching up with friends and enjoying your appies. We ordered the gnocchi , chicken parmesan and chicken mushroom entree. It was defiantly cooked perfectly and we licked our plate/bowls clean. To end our meals we also got dessert; apple fritter and tiramisu which we defiantly cleared the plate once again. The owner also came around about 4 times to ensure everything was running smoothly and that we were happy, which is also good to see, it demonstrates that he really cares and would like us to have an exceptional experience which we did! Would we go back to this place, absolutely without a doubt , we would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a true italian cuisine! It also caught us by surprise, the owner brought us a shot each of a peachy flavoured liquored that was very delicious and smooth, we were chatting away for about 4 hours and never felt the pressure of having to leave. It was a hidden little Jem that was highly recommended from a friend of mine and I am thankful I took her suggestion!
Recommended!. I went with my wife and had a great time. We shared plates and had spicy calamari, sicilian salad, penne arrabiata and giant gamberonis. All was very well prepared, timely and hot when it arrived (where applicable) and very tasty indeed. We particularly appreciated the staff who was never "in-your-face" (which is unfortunately way too common in this town) and left us the heck alone with only our delicious food to enjoy, interesting conversations and refilled wine and water whenever that was needed: Great kudos for this and I wished that more restaurant staff were like this in Cowtown. Do your job, do it well and know your products. We don't need to get close and personal with you all.

Delightful. Nikos is lovely inside, small and cozy, and I would recommend a reservation to avoid disappointment. We wandered in on a week night and there was a few open tables. We started with the calamari and had cannelloni and Spaghettini Aglio e Olio con Salsiccia (Spaghettini with homemade spicy Italian sausage with garlic and mushrooms in extra virgin olive oil) as a main. The calamari was unique as it came out in a spicy tomato sauce and was quite flavorful and tender. Both pasta dishes were amazing, fresh, flavorful, and the tomato sauce with the cannelloni was beautiful. I honestly told our server that I would wash dishes for a month at Nikos if they would only teach me how to make that tomato sauce. We ended the meal with a chocolate mousse (of only they had cannoli – my favorite Italian dessert). Awesome little Italian gem – we will certainly be back to try more of what Niko’s has to offer.
Bravo Niko!. We have been to Niko's Bistro many times and have tried almost everything on the menu. The mussels(cozze adriatico) are great and the calamari is a must have! The veal Marsala is my wife's favorite with good reason, it is tasty, rich and just a "feel good" dish. The cannelloni and Manicotti are excellent. My favorite here is the Spaghettini Frutti di Mare, it's light, fresh and full of flavour. The service is as good as the food and Niko is a pleasure to deal with.
Sticker shock!. We dined here with a larger party of 11 (7 of whom were kids). Everything was fabulous, the food was delicious, service was excellent, we thoroughly enjoyed dining "family style" as the owner suggested due to the size of our party. Our only mistake was that we did not ask how much the "family style" dinner was going to cost us. it worked out to $46 per person not including our wine and pops!! One dinner cost almost as much as a month's rent in Calgary! I was disappointed that the cost wasn't mentioned to us, but to be fair we should have asked. Sorry but I can't afford to eat here again, no matter how good the food and service are.

Excellent Service and Food. I've been here on three different occasions and everytime the service and food has been great. Niko has come out to greet our table evertime and asked how the food was. I would highly recommend this resturant, I dont know what Captian Eatery was expecting maybe to be eating at the Olive Garden where they load you up with bread and salad lol. I would give Niko's Bistro 5 out 5 stars it's truely a hidden gem in Calgary.
Pleasant dinner. Went there with my boyfriend for our anniversary. First, the restaurant is small but the layout works, so we didn't feel squished or anything! The food was REALLY good, so was the wine. The only thing we noticed was that the service was a bit sporadic. We waited a bit before getting drinks, then a bit more to order our appetizer, again a bit more for our main... After the first set of drinks, we noticed a bit less, but we waited here and there for service. What made my night was that the Chef actually came out of his kitchen and asked us how our dinner was and thanked us. I rarely see that anymore and it's just great to thank the man himself instead of the waiter. We would definitely go back again, maybe in a bigger group! I'd recommend the place for sure :)

Wine list is a little 'shallow' and the service is average, however, everyone raved about their choiced entrees and especially the calamari appetizer. Mistake not to short list this place for a fabulous casual dinner.
Delicious experience!!. Our group of 4 went to Niko's on Sunday evening April 13/14. We had never been there before and chose Niko's for its close proximity to the Jubilee where we were attending that evening. The reviews we had read indicated it would be a good experience and it was! The food was delicious and the service was very good. Highly recommend their Bruschetta and the Sambuca Shrimp as starters. I had the lamb, 2 in our party had the salmon and the 4th had the special. The portions were very generous and as I said, delicious. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their dinner. It was a bit noisy to visit and catch up with our friends but that's because the place was packed....it felt like a Saturday evening, not a Sunday. Will definitely return. All in all we would give it a 5/5.
Niko's is a fantastic little restaurant! The staff running the place are very friendly, quick and efficient. The food easily matches the quality of the staff; it is wonderful.

Friday Night. Booked a reservation for 7:45, got there and was seated in middle of the room for 2. Seemed awkward at first but servers and restaurant ambiance made it easy to settle in. Every other table seemed satisfied. Food and drinks all came out at good times. Spicy Calamari was some of the best i've tried especially the way they made it. Never really liked a tomato-e taste with it as i prefer an aioli but it really hit the spot. My frutti de-mare was excellent and her steak tenderloin was also done well. Overall, i would go back again for a special occasion or if i was willing to spend some for a good italian meal

The atmosphere is great, not too loud, not too bright for a smaller, quaint sized place. The braised pollo parpadelle rose was absolutly amazing and the manicotti deserves rave reviews! We were serviced complimentary after diner limoncello on our second visit. A fantastic bistro in Kensington, I would recommend to anyone. I cant wait for a third night out here.

I had dinner at nikos bistro for the first time on Friday, and it won't be my last! Everything was excellent down to the food and the service! My food was served on a nice hot plate and our waitress was very attentive! All and all the experience was great and my guest that were with me also agreed... One of the best dining experiences I've had in a while! Looking forward to eating there again, and trying what other good things they have on there menu!
Just like the first time. I haven't been to Niko's in either 2 or 3 years. My boyfriend had made reservations here on a Saturday night for my birthday dinner, and once we got there we had to wait a few minutes but that was okay. We got a glass of champagne and then got seated right at the bar. I got the pappardelle with salmon and the pasta was cooked perfectly. The smoked salmon was delicious and the light sauce complimented well. We got the cheesecake for dessert and it was amazing! I usually don't eat cheesecake. It was cool being able to see the kitchen and Niko made us feel so welcome.

The place is quaint and small but fits the atmosphere. The staff was very knowledgeable, however, a couple more people would have made things a little more efficient. The appetizers were great and I thoroughly enjoyed how they made their calamari, it was different and fresh, so I don't know what the other reviewer was talking about. My pasta came in the exact portion needed and same with the appetizers, I found it to be fresh and flavourful- not too heavy on the sauce either. Wine pricing was decent and got a great pairing for our food.
We shared the cheesecake for dessert, however, I found it more like a mousse than a cake. I might not order dessert from here again, but will be back for another meal for sure. The owner was very personable and it was great to see him about to stop and talk to the guests.

Fine, Fabulous and Friendly!. A total pleasure, from the time you walk in: nice ambiance, welcoming decor, the warmth of everyone's smile makes you feel like you've walked into "your" community restaurant! The menu is tantalizing and everything we've tasted throughout is fabulous - well seasoned and deliciously prepared. Each time, we have been satiated with our choices, yet on a curious culinary journey for the next visit which we look forward to.
I do not compliment lightly when it comes to food and restaurant offerings, having traveled extensively and dined at exceptional chef owned restaurants. So it is a delightful experience and of course you have Niko whose hospitality makes you feel like you've come back to a dear friend.
Give it a whirl. Fancied an Italian on a Tuesday night..found this small interesting restaurant, and we were surprised to find it bursting at the seams.
Anyway after waiting for a seat,we had the calamari for starters..and as Calamari goes this is the best we have tasted in Calgary. We ordered two pasta dishes, one which the chef made especially for my wife...nothing taste wise really jumped out. but the dishes were presented well, and we ate them without having really anything negative to say about them.
The staff levels for the amount of customers that night was inadequate...we were not in a hurry, the service was slow...but good...the waiter was very knowledgeable..in-fact I think the chef may have come to take our order..so maybe some problem for that night.
Its a great cosy, relaxing, inoffensive little place, and the food is not bad...give it a whirl!
Wonderful Meal!. We booked a reservation for seven. Everyone had a different dish..... Nobody was disappointed! The flavors were so mouth watering, all i could think of was how much i wanted to come back and try more menu items! My daughter would have liked a larger portion of the manicotti, but she didn't have an appetizer or salad to start either. We were 100% satisfied and the bill was Very reasonable. My husband dines out all over the world and said his favorite part of the experience (besides the awesome food) was the teamwork of the staff. Everyone helped us, even Niko came to ask if everything was okay. The perfect birthday dinner :) thank you to the staff!
Foodevent. A favorite Bistro of mine...Niko's on Kensington. This is an amazing little Bistro and the perfect place for a bite to eat. It's a small place with lots of charm and because it's a cozy space, it gets booked up quickly. The food and atmosphere make you feel as if you're in Europe. The professional service staff definitely makes it a truly enjoyable evening. The girls were prompt and friendly, being attentive as and when needed, but without giving you that 'pushy' feeling. (We got to enjoy the moment). They consistently went out of their way to ensure that we had a wonderful experience, each and every time. The food is always fresh and delicious with plenty of tasty dishes. I LOVE the chicken and mushroom entree!!
We've been here so often and enjoyed every item. If you haven't been here, I would highly recommend going. One of my absolute favorites! I suggest you either go early to avoid a wait or reserve. We look forward to our next dining experience there!
Fantastic Food. My wife and I took friends to Niko's last night and both the food and service was awesome. Everything that came out of the kitchen was fresh, smoking hot and cooked to perfection. Bravo to this young Chef who made our evening very memorable.
Excellent Italian. Loved this place. Great appetizers -- including delicious calamari, bruschetta, and mussels. Best of all, the pasta dishes are delicious with an authentic taste (not a "pre-packaged" taste, like some other places) -- prices are reasonable. I will be back.
Love it!. Visited Niko's with my girlfriends. It was very busy so I'm am glad I made a reservation. We started with the calamari and really loved it - different than any calamari I've had, it's done in a tomato sauce with a bit of spice. I'm not big on pasta so I had the chicken with mushrooms and was very happy. My friends had the salmon pasta and penne con vodka - I tried each and loved them both. There's no complimentary bread with the meal but given the amount of food we were served it's just as well. The service was great and the atmosphere was cozy. I recommend making a reservation though - it's quite a small place.
