A must try buns! It is so yummy and delicious
Embarked on a mission to find the best baos in the city and there’s nothing I won’t do in the name of a worthy cause so if that means my mind and body must endure 8 Baos in one sitting, so be it. Have been hearing murmurs of this place for a while now so The Bao Place across from Metrotown had to be the first stop on our journey, before heading on to Bao Bakery on Joyce St.
This is a small shop located on Kingsway, just across from Metrotown. As the name suggests, they specialize in steamed buns, which they offer in about a dozen varieties. I've sampled their BBQ Delight, Buttermilk, Taro, Pork Deluxe, Curry Dynamite, and Belly Belly Pork buns, as well as a sample of their Chili Oil. Their buns, although a bit flat-looking, are nevertheless still soft and fluffy; the fillings are also tasty, and I quite enjoyed their chili oil. All in all this, is a spot that I think is worth a visit.
BBQ Delight ($3):
4/5
This was filled with ground pork in a bbq sauce. The bun looked a bit flat in appearance, but was actually quite light and fluffy. The pork was tender and juicy, and had a nice bit of sweetness.
Buttermilk ($2.50):
3.5/5
The filling was actually more custard-like, and contained coconut. It was on the sweeter side while the coconut provided a great fragrance.
Taro ($2.50):
3.5/5
The filling was quite creamy and mildly sweet. I did find the flavour here to be a tad subtle/mild, but it was still tasty.
Pork Deluxe ($3.75):
4/5
This was filled wiht ground pork, sausage, egg, water chestnuts and other ingredients. The pork was very tender, juicy, and well-seasoned. The chestnuts provided a great texture while the egg provided a nice creaminess.
Curry Dynamite ($3):
3.5/5
This was filled with beef. The meat had a nice bit of heat, although I didn't get much fragrance of the filling.
Belly Belly Pork ($3.25):
4/5
This was filled with pieces of pork belly. The pork was very tender and juicy. I did find it to be a tad on the underseasoned side.
Chili Oil:
This provided a really nice fragrance, richness as well as heat, and was a nice sauce for the bun to be dipped in.
Summary:
Food: 3.5/5
Price: 3.5/5
Service: N/A
Overall: 3.5/5
Recommendations: BBQ Delight, Pork Deluxe, Belly Belly Pork
Bao Place is a tiny shop that opened up last year located near Miss Saigon, across the street from Metropolis at Metrotown. They seem mainly geared towards take-out orders but they do have a few seats inside. They have a very limited menu set. I ordered the Pork Delux ($3.25), Curry Dynamite ($2.50), and BBQ Delight ($2.50).
I have been curious of this place for quite some time, as I live in South Burnaby area. I finally visited this place one afternoon, and the server greeted me nicely. I asked whether they still had all of the items on the menu, but at that time they had no taro bun left.
I decided to buy 6 buns: 1 Pork Delicious, 1 BBQ Delight, 1 Veggie Devine, 1 Buttermilk, and 2 Red Bean. I have tried the BBQ Delight and Buttermilk, while my father ate the Veggie Devine.
Overall, their buns are good. They are soft and puffy. The stuffings are generous; while the Buttermilk is so-so, the BBQ Delight is really good for a person who has a sweet tooth like me. My father, who mainly eats vegetable-based food, said that he liked their Veggie Devine.
I recommend this place as if you live around Burnaby and crave for some good, home-made buns.
The BAO place has some awesome varieties. I wasn't very fond of siopao because of earlier bad(mostly bland stuffing and dry buns) experience at different locations.
The Bao Place is on the way to office from my home. I was always like..."Give this place a try".
I recently bought their Beef and Chicken variety and would say their beef curry siopao is outstanding. I bought some for my colleagues as well. Around 10 people from my team had tried and everyone was just WOW.
Looking forward to try other varieties too especially Curry Dynamite
I stumbled on The Bao Place cuz of Instagram. Good thing about Instagram is that it’s good for discovering places that other people like. Bad thing is that it’s impossible to remember who mentions what because it’s like Twitter — it’s a deluge of data that’s unrelenting…like a firehose. There’s only one lukewarm review on Zornado of this place, but since I was in the area, I thought I’d check it out for a quick lunch.
