Review Sushi Oyama - Burnaby

Madison
Sushi Oyama is amazing! The location is beautiful in an old heritage home and the sushi is super fresh and delicious. It is on the more expensive side, but you’re paying for good quality and big portions. The Maki Tray is the best bang for your buck, as pictured here you get so much food for a great price for two people! Highly recommend coming here!

Their salmon sashimi is better than most japanese restaurants. The staff were also attentive and fast. I'd visit again.

I've loved Oyama for a long time, but tonight I was utterly disappointed. Their standard of food quality has gone down hill over the past couple years. Sadly, after ordering take out, I had to throw most of it out. That was a waste of over priced sushi. The tempura prawns did not taste right, mealy, the shrimp was grey under the batter, not to say it was undercooked, but maybe the shrimp was over cooked or just started to go bad. The quality of the sound trap roll too was disgusting.

I was not impressed by the food. The Japanese chicken karaage was actually just fast food bar fried chicken wings that was very dry with no substance. Highly recommend that you go to an actual Japanese restaurant. Looks can be deceiving.

Tried alot of their rolls tonight. Lots of variety to choose from. Overall good.

I don’t like wasting my time for posting bad reviews but this time is not the case. Food was not that bad. But customer service was terrible. Be aware that this restaurant serves chicken karaage with bone which is still fine even though I haven’t seen boned karaage from other japanese restaurant. (Oyama Shusi’s menu didn’t mention they serve boned karaage) Also, the karaage was rather like fast food store wings. They were dry and hard. We casually mentioned chicken karaage with bone was not what we expected when waitress came to us and asked if everything is ok. She explained she has worked for so many different sushi restaurants in Surrey, Langley and they used to have boned karaage. I felt like waitress used condescending tone on us implying herself is right and customers are wrong. (So, I guess my experience from so many different sushi restaurants’ boneless juicy karaage is nothing) The worst part at this restaurant was when we were paying for the bill. We mentioned if we were the only cutomers so far having problem with quality of karaage and the same waitress said YES. After payment when we mentioned there is a review about karaage’s quality from other on Google, waitress didn’t let us finish our sentence and responded by yelling “YEAH YEAH OK OK YEAH YEAH” without even looking at us and started helping other customers. It would be the WORST EXPERIENCE EVER. This restaurant really should improve their customer service. I regret tipping this horrible restaurant. My day was totally ruined. I will never ever go back to this place. If you are gonna try this place, I recommend you getting yourself ready to be yelled just because you talk about the food and its quality.

We enjoyed our dinner and sake very much. The food is good, the building is a lovely old converted mansion with beautiful stained glass details as while the service is fairly attentive. I was happily surprised at the size of my BC roll. It's HUGE, fresh and yummy. Yaki Soba and Yaki Udon dishes were flavourful. Chicken teriyaki on rice was cooked well, gyoza and tempura prawns were fresh and hot. There are some menu items for someone needing gluten-free dishes which was great. The building isn't accessible for those with mobility issues. There are no ramps, lots of steep steps to walk up and no elevator that we could find. The meals main meals didn't come out at the same time so some we're almost finished before others had started.

Found this gem while I lived in Vancouver... It is now my first stop everytime I leave the island. Great prices with even better sushi. ANYONE who knows me, knows how much I adore this place

I eat here once a week! Food is always great and prices are very reasonable. Service can be slow but with food and prices like this I don't care!

Hello everyone, here is another restaurant food review and this time my significant other and I decided to check out Sushi Oyama Japanese Dining House located right off Burlington Ave and Kingsway in Burnaby, BC on a Tuesday evening for their Tuesday dinner special on Nov 12, 2019. <br/><br/>As we walked in, we were immediately greeted and a hostess sat us at a corner table booth and gave us the menu right away.  After taking several minutes to glance at their menu, one of their server came to our table and serve us two cups of hot tea and ask if we are ready to order and we were ready to order. <br/><br/>Read my full posts here:<br/>https://foodieyvrjasmine604.wordpress.com/2019/11/12/sushi-oyama-japanese-dining-house-nov-12-2019/

The food was good but please advise the servers to be careful when gossiping about the customers in Korean. I went with a non korean friend (im korean) and could understand all the rude comments the servers made of customers and it was really uncomfortable.

October, 2018<br/><br/>I went there for late lunch with hubby. It's around 3 pm. Still customers come in... with good and fast services from 3 Japanese servers with less than 5 table of customers, fresh and yummy food..<br/><br/>We tried:<br/><br/>Uni nigiri sushi -- uni is so fresh, but thin and small slice uni on big piece of rice, no wonder so cheap... $3.50 per piece.. I never had that price for uni sushi before.. used to be at least $6 per piece<br/><br/>Las Vegas roll -- deep fried roll with 5 kinds of sauce with crab/ tobiko/ cream cheese.. it's really crispy outside, tasty inside with a lot cream cheese, but it's kind of filling.<br/><br/>Spicy deep fried smelt -- their batter mixed with chilli sauce in it.. it's really crispy and spicy outside.. hot and soft inside.. yummy.. but too spicy for me.. I had one piece, my hubby need to finish all for me.<br/><br/>Bacon bake roll --- it's so good.. highly recommended.. something different.. cannot find it from richmond area.<br/><br/>Spicy miso ramen --- not that spicy... tasty soup base with a lot of ingredients inside, but they forgot put pork meat inside, but they gave us 2 pieces of fatty pork belly, after we asked for it..<br/><br/>Its about $70 + 15 % tips for 2 people for lunch. Not bad...I will go there again.. as long as .. they have a lot of selections and something different than others.<br/><br/>June, 2018<br/><br/>I went for lunch with mom. Slow and bad services with 2 Chinese ladies, saw all employees speak Chinese and 2 asian guys keeps swearing in Chinese and yapping about their boss at bar.<br/><br/>We tried:<br/><br/>Oyster motoyaki--- too oily, tiny chopped oyster meat with a lot of spinach inside<br/><br/>Lunch box with tempura/ sashimi/ California roll .. big portion for $14.. worth for that price<br/><br/>Unagi and hamachi sushi --- thin slice of fish on top of cold hard rice.<br/><br/>Bacon bake roll-- tasty and good<br/><br/>Sound trap roll --- just only crispy frakes top of California roll, not worth for that price<br/><br/>

I ordered delivery from Sushi Oyama for Christmas lunch (they were one of the handful restaurants that are open on Christmas day). I had their Tuna and Salmon Sashimi, Aburi Grand Slam, Black Dragon Roll, and Rainbow Roll (details on each below). The food arrived very quickly, and although one of the rolls (the Black Dragon Roll) was a bit battered during the delivery process, that was to be expected, and it certainly didn't affect the flavours of the roll. All of the food was pretty good, in particular the rolls, and all the fish were fresh. I really like their rather large and creative menu. Although I do find their prices to be a bit on the higher side, I'm certainly going to be returning again to sample more from their menu.<br/><br/>Tuna and Salmon Sashimi ($11.40):<br/>3.5/5<br/>The fish was fresh and had a good texture without any off flavour. I did find the price to be a bit high, however.<br/><br/>Aburi Grand Slam (Salmon, Tai, Ebi, Hamachi, $8.90):<br/>2.5/5 <br/>I personally found their version of Aburi to be a bit too plain for my liking; I would have preferred it to be jazzed up a bit by some sauces/garnishes. Otherwise however, the fish was again, fresh and the rice well cooked.<br/><br/>Black Dragon Roll ($12.50):<br/>4.5/5<br/>Crab, avocado, cucumber, eel on top, masago, tobiko, bonito, mayo. This was my favourite roll. It was very creamy from the avocado and the mayonnaise. Flavourwise, the roll was quite "xian" (for those of you who don't know, that's the Chinese term for "umami") from all the seafood and also had a nice hint of sweetness from the unagi sauces.<br/><br/>Rainbow Roll ($11.70):<br/>4/5<br/>Tamago, tuna, salmon, tai, tako, evi, avocado, wasabi mayo. This roll wasn't as creamy or flavourful as the black dragon, but still delicious and again very xian from the generous amount of seafood that it contained. The rice was well cooked without being too mushy.

I'm staying at a nearby hotel and came here early on Aug 16, 2017. By the time I left at 1800, the restaurant was busy so I'd recommend coming early if you can. Menu is huge with a little bit of everything for everyone. <br/><br/>My yardstick for sushi is salmon sashimi. So I ordered that along with the chopped scallop cone and two special rolls (red roll and sound trap). Food came quickly. First to arrive was the sashimi, quickly followed by the cone. <br/><br/>There was a slight fishy odour emanating from the cone (didn't taste fishy) and I think it was the cone holder that smelled funny. It didn't appear to be squeaky clean (no visible dirt but appeared oily) so maybe that's what it was. <br/><br/>Taste and texture of the sashimi was amazing. Beautifully smooth and no fishiness. Portion size was ginormous. Cone was also delicious and not too mayonnaise-y. Red roll had a lovely spice to it. The sound trap... I'm not too sure about. It had a ton of sauce and the flavour of it just wasn't to my liking. Just wanted to try something new and different. <br/><br/>Total bill was $38 including tax. Service was great, even as the restaurant picked up. Would definitely come here again. As a previous poster mentioned, the building used to be a funeral home and I quite like it. It's a very unique look on the inside and I love the landscaping outside. If nothing else, come here to take some lovely photos of greenery and flowers.

Sushi Oyama is located on Kingsway. For some reason, I have never been Sushi Oyama (the "house-looking restaurant) before. By accident, my boyfriend and I found this restaurant and had an awesome lunch here. They have lots of fancy special rolls on the menu, which are my boyfriends favorite.  We ordered Aburi Saba with Green Onion, Aburi Salmon with Green onion, mayo, Calamari Crunch Roll (8pcs), and Black Pearl. The special rolls were fancy looking, tasty and delicious.

If you bring kids and order the kids combo: watch out for the wasabi they put on the plate! My toddler swallowed the whole thing before I had a chance to intervene. Needless to say, he was in pain for a while. When I asked why they included wasabi in kids combo, all kitchen staff and servers said in unison, 'we do this all the time and no one has complained'. They proceeded to put the responsibility on me, that I didn't stop him in time. It was a very unpleasant experience for our family.

After a Easter egg hunt event, my girlfriend and her little cousins were hungry. We all decided to come here. The ratings would be higher if service is up to par. There were 4 people at our table and they brought 2 waters. We asked for 2 extra waters 3 times and after the forth time it finally came. Sheesh...<br/><br/>This place looks Korean owned. All the workers are Korean. As for the sushi, it's decent. Not mind blowing, but decent. Just don't order the sushi pizza or deep fried California roll... Blah!!!<br/>The Alaska roll was pretty sad as well...<br/>Cute little place, looks like it's a historic house. Ample parking around back and side streets.<br/>

• limited parking available, can get really busy or pay street parking<br/>• love all their variety of sushi made in heaven<br/>• fast, efficient and friendly service<br/>• $$ but worth it<br/>• $70 for 3 people for dinner

The sushi and rolls are ok. The cooked food dishes seem to be made a bit sloppy the last time I was there. They had sushi pizza, but wasn't what I expected. Too much of the child mayo sauce and didn't look too appetizing (see one of my posted photes). I had sushi pizza at one other restaurant in North Burnaby and that was the best.

My husband and I decided to try something new while in burnaby for the night...they told us 15 mins to wait which was totally ok but they forgot to give us our order and we waited thinking maybe it was someone else's order... I can tell you that the sushi was a mushy consistency, almost all of it tasted the same with a weird off taste i cannot describe. The sushi LOOKED great...however I have never in my life spat sushi out before now. We were given free soup which I swear that was not tofu but more like an over cooked egg dropped in broth. And to top it all off a salad with a very very wrong flavour for a dressing that was like a sour sesame seeds cross with Italian dressing. No longer hungry and a waste of money.

Sushi Oyama features mostly specialty rolls (deep fried and/or super saucy). It was one of the first sushi places I ever went to in metro Vancouver and it used to be one of my favourites, however, more recently, their rolls and service isn't what it used to be. My friend and I came during lunch so it was relatively dead, and our waitress still only managed to come around once after she took our order (to drop off our food). We had to constantly wave her down to refill our tea and also to fix our order. The sushi rolls also didn't hold together at all and broke apart when lifted from the plate. Assuming that this was just a bad lunch experience, a different friend had made plans with me later in the evening, and also ended up taking me to Oyama (probably because it's a 5min drive from my place). He ordered the deluxe aburi set as well as fresh oysters. The oysters were fine since you can't really mess up oysters, however, I also noticed that the rice was falling apart/off his aburi nigiri's as he lifted them off the plate. (I opted out of ordering for the evening and just got a beer). To be honest, I'll probably go to sushi garden from now on to get my cheap and quick sushi fix. I don't think I'll be coming back anytime soon.

Service is great. The sushi tasted okay but the fried chicken is way too soggy. It tasted like they just put in the microwave. Anyways it's a great place if you only want to get sushi.

Food is very reasonably priced! Great flavor, super quick service. Food orders are always accurate. Excellent service with friendly staff. This is our weekly treat!

My friend and I went to Sushi Oyama on a Friday night after seeing that The One down the street had a line out the door. There were a couple groups waiting at the front lobby, so my friend put her name down with the hostess and asked how long she thinks the wait will be. At this point, a male server had come behind the hostess and heard my friend's question. For some reason, he got pissy, glanced at us, and then told the hostess 'ah f*ck. Don't tell them' in Korean. <br/><br/>I understand Korean and was in genuine shock that this guy would say such a rude and dismissive thing when we simply asked one of the most commom questions you can ask a restaurant. The waitress told us she didn't know how long the wait will be but there were only 4 groups on the waitlist. Needless to say, I told the hostess that server was incredibly rude and she was flustered that I had understood. I wondered just how many unknowing customers they had cursed at in Korean. It's not that hard to be polite and respond with basic manners.<br/><br/>We weren't going to spend one more minute in that place and headed across the street to Jang Mo Jib, which was able to tell us the wait time is 10 minutes.

Sushi used to be good at this location However, I ate there today and food was very bad. Shrimps were dry, old, greasy. Unhappy!!! I don't think I will go again.

I have been here quite a few times. This place is on my B-List(slightly above average). Sushi Oyama is not a place to have your traditional pieces of sushi. They are more catered to fusion type of sushi rolls. It is a Korean run restaurant similar to Sushi Garden which is better than Sushi Oyama. <br/>The one thing that will make me grade sushi on the bad side is when the seaweed around the rolls are moist and not crispy. I had a few rolls here that had that issue. I also dislike how some of the rolls had warm rice on the rolls. Through my several visits at Sushi Oyama(mainly because I was invited to eat there) I've had inconsistent experiences. The quality and preparation of food were different with each visit. <br/>If you are craving sushi in Burnaby and need a quick fix, then go to Sushi Oyama.

This restaurant looks like a house inside and out. It is kind of a unique space, giving it a different vibe. From what I could see, the restaurant is pretty large with seating inside and outside. Although the outside is still covered and there are heat lamps too!<br/><br/>It was busy when we got there and had to wait about 10 minutes. Once we ordered the food, it didn't take too long. I was worried with how busy they were, that it'd take even longer. We tried the negitoro roll, chopped scallop roll, green dragon roll, and spicy seafood yaki udon. Although the reason I came was because of the aburi sushi I saw, the price was a bit steep. Aburi ika was 4.20 and I didn't feel right paying that much. But maybe one day I'll go back and splurge; hopefully it will be worth it. With what we did order, it was pretty solid. Nothing too amazing, but it was good sushi. I liked it better than sushi garden. The filling for their chopped scallop was actually quite a bit, and I liked it instead if having too much <br/>rice and no filling. The spicy yaki udon had seafood I wasn't exactly expecting like fishball and smoked salmon ( not too sure but it looked like it). But it did have mussel, scallop, crab, and shrimp. However, it was a bit too spicy for the both of us. We ended up packing the udon so that we could bring it home and add some more noodles and thing to spread out the sauce. <br/><br/>Although it was busy, I felt that service was good. Sometimes a bit hard to flag someone down, but they were helpful once you got their attention. If I was in the area, I'd probably come back.

I've been an advocate of Sushi Oyama for years, recommending to all my friends. However in the last year, this branch has had the quality drop to sub par. The last three orders for takeout have been completely unacceptable.<br/><br/>In this last order I made it as simple as possible. Dynamite Roll, Teriyaki Chicken and Spicy Salmon Sashimi. The chicken was hard and chewy, the shrimp in the dynamite roll was so thin that it was laughable. The batter was as if it was shrimp that was fried a second time after not getting served the first. The Spicy Salmon, which used to be my favorite dish from this restaurant, has been terrible each time I've ordered it (more than just the last three times). It's as if it's being filled with the scrap left over salmon which they dare not serve as regular sashimi.<br/><br/>My disappointment of how the quality of food from this restaurant has just been growing over the last year. I'd hoped that it would return back to the high quality standard it used to have, but have decided to stop waiting. They've lost a customer and I would no longer recommend to anyone I know
Jentaro
If you are here, you'd be missing out if you order normal stuff like California roll or Dynamite roll. I like this place because of their special rolls. Many are very creative, saucy, and tasty. I really recommend the Las Vegas roll.
Rain
My family had dinner here yesterday. It was quite full so we had to wait a few minutes before we got a table. We ordered chicken katsu, sushi pizza, ebi mayo, Las Vegas roll, prawn tempura and the oysters. We only waited for a while before our food arrived. Everything was delicious!! I really loved the Las Vegas roll. It was fried sushi with 5 different sauces. Everything else was tasty. I loved it. The service is good. They are friendly and attentive. The location itself is nice. We'll be back if we're in the area!

We got to sit in the glass area AND IT WAS OVERWHELMINGLY HOT. The food so served in quite lovely plating. Aburi salmon was very smooth and melted wonderfully on my tongue. Personally didn't like the eagle eye too much, but it had lots of chopped scallop which was nice because I thought it would be mostly rice underneath the fish.

Hey, if you are looking for a place to have nice Japanese food, you are on the wrong page. PLEASE don't waste your money for eat this TASTELESS food and to get AWFUL service. I had a dinner at Oyama with my bf. We ordered 1 sashimi, 2 rolls and 1 Udon. The sashimi & sushi were ok (nothing special), but the Udon was tasteless and bland. The Udon soup was like just hot water with 2 drops of soy sauce. So I asked a waitress to bring it back to the kitchen and check the taste with a chef, but she refused it. Moreover, she brought a spoon and tasted the soup in front of us, then said 'it is normal taste'. Well, I guess she thought that I am a stupid woman who complained about NORMAL TASTE OF UDON SOUP. If I were the server, I would pretend to bring kitchen at least. Anyways, my boyfriend had to add 1 1/2TBSP of soy sauce to eat it. (Thank you for making me pay for the shit. Appreciate it.)

Pretty scary considering this use to be a crematorium ... but i tried to not think about that when eating my dinner. I came a bit later so unfortunately there was no more fresh oysters left, so we opted for the baked ones. This was very satisfying, it was nice and creamy and decently sized too! I highly don't recommend ordering the black pearl just because it is very dense and just isn't appetizing. The rolls were decent but overall nothing stood out.
PBNK
I would give Sushi Oyama 0 stars if I could, but 1.0 is the lowest I can go. Just got take out from them and the salmon in my spicy salmon rolls has gone bad and sour. Also saw a rat run by the steps when was leaving the restaurant. Will never go again.

Ahh, who doesn't love a spring getaway? The weather is finally warm and the flowers are in bloom.  The sun doesn't set until later and the days seemed filled with promise.  We decided to drive to Vancouver, British Columbia, located two and a half hours north of Seattle, for a couple days to visit my husband's cousin and her family.  They live in Burnaby, outside of Vancouver, so we ate lunch at Sushi Oyama, located in a large Heritage house.  Right away, I loved the look of the restaurant and thought it was unique, being a large house serving sushi.  The servers were really friendly and the food arrived really promptly to our table.  The prices were also good and they had quite a few lunch specials.  I had the California roll combo which came with salad and miso soup, eight pieces of sushi, and even some sashimi.  Our sons had potstickers and inari, which they love and always get when we go out for sushi.  My husband's sushi looked good too, and nicely presented.  The lunch was a good way to start our visit.  Then it was time to head to our cousin's house and get ready for some exploring!

Sushi Oyama is located near Metrotown, it is on Kingsway and Royal Oak Avenue. It is a converted heritage house. It has stone exterior on the outside and wooden decorations on the inside. <br/><br/>We drove pass by Sushi Oyama many times and always wondered if it was worth giving a try! We finally went in on a Friday night around 7 pm. Surprisingly we don't have to wait. The restaurant is only half full.<br/><br/>The food is so-so. Don't get me wrong. Sashimi and oysters are fresh, but they just lack of flavour. In addition, there was a bit of waiting times in between dishes. <br/><br/><br/>Food: 3/5<br/>Services: 3.5/5<br/>Special Features: more than 20 kinds of Special Roll (nice presentation)
Jenny L
Tuna tataki was a complete ripoff. It was tasteless and cut to the thinnest slice possible. The salad on the bottom totally woke me up in the cold - the dressing was too sour. The yaki udon would be better if the sauce was less sweet. So does the sauce on the aburi salmon. All the sauces are overpowering and covered the original flavour of the food. The seared salmon itself was quite good, bringing out the fatty flavour of the fish. The chopped scallop was also fresh and has natural sweetness. We left with half empty stomach and paid $40 with tips. There were also 3 more nigiri that were not in the pic. The rice was kinda dry and rough. The Unagi has too much rice and has barely any unagi in it. Won't be back in the near future.

Ask me what my favourite sushi place is and my answer is something like “Cheap sushi? Fancy sushi? Mid-price sushi? Am I with people that like mayo? Do I want to be able to have conversations? Any neighbourhood?” and so on. It is impossible to narrow it down to one. Sushi Oyama is my favourite mid-priced, mayo heavy, Burnaby sushi joint. Ha.
餠??
Service is quick and friendly for the most part, food is always on point. Wide range on the menu from basic rolls to carpaccios and new adaptations. Doesn't get pricy unless you order only the next level stuff. The eye sushi (around $3) isn't really anything special but it sounds cool. Really its just an oddly shaped ball of fish on rice on cucumber. Dragon rolls are bomb and sushi sandwich is sex A+ highly recommend
Nada
Excellent presentation of food and delicious! I ordered the Las Vegas roll, black dragon and sound trap. Highly recommend these ! Lovely atmosphere too. It was well worth it

The worst service I ever had in a restaurant, Had us waiting for 30 min. then I followed up with the waiter, he replied that there are so much people so we waited again for 20 min. and followed up again, only to tell us that our orders was not punched in and we had to re-order again !!!!!! Left the place after waiting for an hour. I asked for the manager to express my dissatisfaction, he/she did not even bother talking to us.....NEVER GOING BACK THERE AGAIN..There are better sushi restaurants around and much cheaper......

Beautiful heritage building makes for a really nice ambience. <br/>The sushi was quite good and the service was really quick. It was almost too quick because at the end of our meal the staff were running, literally running, between tables to clear them and set them. Made us feel a bit like we were being subtly told to pay and leave but we ignored it. <br/>The dragon roll was delicious and their Uni is very reasonably priced. Everything was delicious!
Ken Li
Their sushi is slight above average. like most non-Japan sushi chef do, this place is trying to use quantity and price to win their customer. But the price is not on the cheap side neither.

July 19, 2015 · by ThatShanghaiGirl · Sushi restaurant in a great location, the old house makes you think your somewhere more pricy but actually the place is pretty inexpensive! I used to frequent here so much and last week was my first time back in 1-2 years. Place hasn’t changed very much (alright service, alright decor) and they still had all my old favourites on the menu , but I decided to try out their new summer menu.........

It's been a while since I've eaten at Sushi Oyama (the "house-looking restaurant).  They have a lot of "special" rolls that're nice to look at and delicious to eat! On this visit, we ordered the Seafood Salad, Deluxe Assorted Sashimi, Alaska Roll, Crispy Awesome Roll, and Black Pearl. I always find this restaurant really comfortable and relaxing to eat at :) They have a patio/ outdoor seating area, and since the restaurant is higher up (not ground level) it's nice to look outside! However, they have a large flight of stairs at the entrance which is not very convenient for some people.

Sushi Oyama located on Kingsway and Royal Oak Avenue, is a converted heritage house featuring beautiful stone exterior on the outside and modern wooden decors on the inside. This beautiful restaurant was once operated as the Royal Oak Funeral Home until 1981.... Hmm I don't really mind as long as they give me good food, but I wished my friend told me about it as soon as I sat on the table.
Vannommers
They have pretty well done sushi and unique rolls to choose from. The mangodise roll that I tried was so good, the mango and prawn worked well with the mayo drizzled on top. mmMmM. Service and food were all prompt, but the restaurant itself is a bit loud and cramped, too. The exterior and interior are really sights to see also. I'll definitely be back to try more.
Foodienoms
Great sushi! But this place is far too busy and congested to sit in for a meal. I always order out. And it's a bit on the expensive side. :(
Gorgelicious
After having driven by many times, I can finally cross this place off my list. There's street parking and parking in the back = instant plus. Something about the inside of the restaurant makes it feel so cozy. They have a patio and a nice little waterfall by the entrance. Service was very efficient.<br/><br/>Gyoza is the best I've had. Perfectly pan fried and piping hot. So good that we got another order of these bad boys right after we finished with the first. Seafood udon came with 1 mussel, 2 imitation crab sticks, 1 fish ball, 1 shrimp, julienne carrots, some mushrooms, and a few pieces of cabbage and tofu puffs. Soup was a bit bland but nothing togarashi can't fix! They are generous with the sauces that they put on the rolls which I love because that eliminates the need for soy sauce.<br/><br/>Definitely my new favourite sushi joint and am already dreaming about my next visit.

"I’ve driven past this Japanese restaurant more often than I can remember, always telling myself that I really ought to give them a try. It just looks so interesting from the outside. Sushi Oyama is actually a converted heritage house, complete with a fantastic stone exterior and storied wooden walls on the inside. I’ve been told that it was even a funeral home at one point, making the “haunted sushi” even more intriguing to consider. "<br/>Check the comment below for a link to the full written review.

Terrible. If your looking for terrible service, and food to match this is your place

Mediocre food with extremely slow service even though servers were running around all over the place. Very disappointed.

Amazing food, horrible service. The food is first rate, prices are good atmosphere is great. What is not great however is the lack of service attention one receives. The fist indication of the service standard is how long it takes to order. 15 mins, t is busy I understand but just saying, " I will be with you shortly" would have gone a very long way. Received food and drink... let the good times role. Wait, no quality check at all. No would you like some more to drink. No would you like some more food. In essence I was willing and waiting to spend more money but left from lack of service. Told a server and the lady at the till. \they did say sorry but nothing was done at all. The fod was great but left with a bad taste in my mouth.

Disappointed. The quality and the quantity was very low and very expensive .Never I will go back

Very disappointed with the quality of the food. Don't think will come again.

Gonna become a regular now! :). This was my second time going and, like the first, it definitely did not disappoint! They have a waiting room with cushioned benches and a hostess to serve you when you first walk into their restaurant. The smile they greet you with lets you know you've come to the right place for good food and good vibes :D We were seated soon after arriving. Their menu has the basics of all decent sushi restaurants (california, dynamite, etc) as well as a "special rolls" section. The variety and creativity of such rolls really impress me and I would say they are competition for 'Sushi & Roll' in Surrey. Our first food item arrived relatively fast (within 5-10 minutes of placing the order). This was a pleasant surprise considering how packed the restaurant was at around 7pm on a Friday night. We decided to wait for the rest of our dishes however after 10 minutes of waiting we decided to just dig in. It wasn't until we finished the first dish that the rest of our food items came and this was nearly half an hour after we placed the order. Also it seemed extremely hard to get second drinks after the first cup of green tea they pour for you after being seated. We made sure to move our empty cups over to the side of the table so they could see and after seeing them walk past our table multiple times .....they still didn't offer drinks. I understand that they were busy and have other things to be doing but paying attention and anticipating the customer's needs is also part of their jobs. I suppose the only criticism I have is that the speed of service was a bit off. But then again, both times I got there around 7pm on the weekends.<br/>The food was fantastic. Worth the price. Fresh and delicious. The sashimi is generously portioned and the rolls are made beautifully. I would recommend coming here with friends and ordering some sashimi, maki rolls, and at least one or two of their special rolls. And who knows, maybe a hot sake anyone? Leave feeling content and full :D

Picturesque location, good sushi. After seeing Sushi Oyama on Urbanspoon we decided to try it out with a big group (10). Arriving at the restaurant we were pretty concerned because it looked TOO nice. There was a garden out front, and a stone stairway leading up to a rather lovely house. When we were seated in our booth room upstairs, we were quite relieved to find that the prices weren't really inflated at all. Phew!<br/><br/>They had a button you could press to call a server, as we weren't central in the restaurant, which worked well as a system. We received our food promptly despite 3 large groups dining simultaneously. So I was actually quite impressed with their service.<br/><br/>Lastly, and most importantly, the food was good, but I've had better. The gyoza were really quite nice though, and well crisped. The rolls our table had were all well-received.<br/><br/>Overall: Lovely location, we had good service, and the night was a success food-wise. I'd definitely go back and recommend it for sushi out in Burnaby.

Lousy service. I ordered a party tray take out at 3:30 in the afternoon and told them I would pick it up at 4:45. When I got there, they told me I had to wait another 10 minutes. Really??? Also, the girl greeter is pretty rude. When I asked for more chopsticks to take with me, gave me a very annoyed look. Won't go back there for sure.

Love the food!. This is a place where I would always go to for sushi. They have great food, really nice ambiance but I find the service is a bit slow. It's close to home so it's not a big deal.

Food Okay, Service BADDD. Service is poor, mistakes and missed orders. Even when they repeated our order. Food Quality Okay but had far better.

Down the drain it goes... Sushi Oyama was great when it first opened its doors, but now I am wondering wth happened to this place? The poor staff acknowledgement of patrons, lack of attentiveness, and the quality of food is gone. All gone. This use to be the place where I would get my fix of tempura udon and sashimi. I loved their tempura udon, as it was flavorful and had tenkasu (bits of tempura batter) inside to soak up the soup. Their sashimi & sushi combo use to be so fresh and nicely portioned, but now the sashimi quality and taste have gone down the drain. I thought popularity would've improved the quality, not down grade it by a few levels. Hopefully they will get back to basics, or else this place is not worth coming back to or even try.

AWESOME JAPANESE FOOD. Food is fast, portion is generous, price is cheap, food is delicious! Definitely coming back

Sushi in an old house.. The environment in an old house was definitely unique and welcomed compared to other sushi restaurants. Like many other popular Burnaby restaurants, the waiting time for table was long. This restaurant is my alternative to Sushi Garden when their line-up appears to be too long for me.

I have been to the Coquitlam Sushi Oyama multiple times and great service and food...expected the same at the Burnaby location but it was the complete opposite. Besides the fact that it did not have wheelchair access and the railings upstairs were not up to code (not night enough)...horrible service, rude employees and you had to pay extra for a little extra teriyaki sauce and if you have more than 9 people you still have to pay a min $110?! What's up with that. They forgot my Grandmother's order and did not apologize...meanwhile the food and tea was cold. I would not recommend the Burnaby location at all.

Logistic problems galore. We came here for lunch on a Monday at around 12:30pm and ended up waiting for 10 minutes without being greeted by anyone. Meanwhile we could see the sushi chefs working hard but not once did they look up to acknowledge us or signal for a front of house/waitress. By the time the waitress arrived, there was another group waiting as well. She tells us to write our name down and then bustles away again. When she returned 5 minutes later, she allowed the later group to be seated first when there were plenty of empty seats! That should have been the first sign that this would not be the greatest visit. There were clearly not enough waitresses working-tables were empty but not cleaned off, and they really needed a host solely working the front. <br/><br/>We ordered a couple rolls to share -the red roll and the alaska roll. The alaska roll was horrible! I'm used to eating the alaska rolls from Sushi Garden and Sushi Town and was expecting something similar since the ingredients were essentially the same. When it arrived it was mushy and looked like it had been dunked in a bowl of the drizzled sauce and left sitting in there for a minute. What's worse, it tasted like that had been the case as well! All I could taste was the drizzle sauce in a mushy texture with every bite. <br/><br/>I'm never coming back and you shouldn't either.

Unique and enjoyable. I met some friends here for an early birthday lunch. None of us have tried it before, and all wanted to due to the house it is in. We were seated on the right side in the back with a huge window next to us. Very nice and a bit private so we could have some laughs. The whole place is very beautiful and actually decorated nicely for the holidays. A large menu, I did not want much, so I ordered spinach Gomae. I liked it, but the sauce seemed as if had just been mixed as I could still taste the un-dissolved "sugar"? I did like the taste though. I also had avocado roll. I enjoyed it . I had an order of chicken karaage .which were crispy and crunchy, but not a lot of flavor to them. The table also shared some gyoza, and tempura both of which people reported as good. All in all I enjoyed it and will be back again to try some other things again for sure.

Sushi Oyama food quality changed. We used to like this place a lot. It was one of the most popular places to go for sushi, sashimi, and especially tempura (their tempura used to be the best one in Metro Van). Until yesterday. Went to this place and ordered our regular take-out: black dragon roll, house roll, toro sashimi, and prawn tempura. Well, what we found when we got home and opened it was that fish in sushi had a quite prominent "fishy" smell and taste, it was an okay fish, just not too fresh as it always used to be in their sushi. Toro sashimi (tuna belly) tasted like your regular tuna sashimi, not a hint of that delightful fatty tuna meat that melts in your mouth. That sucks because the price difference between regular tuna and toro sashimi is significant. Tempura, which used to be the best in town (crisp, dry, not oily) now was a total mess - oily through and through with batter coat falling off those prawns which, again, had that unpleasant "fishy" smell. Meh. Oh, and on top of all this, wasabi they put in containers with sushi and sashimi was what looked like leftovers or was just left in the open unused for a long time! Wasabi was dried out greyish on the outside! What happened to this place? Did they change their kitchen staff? Sorry to say, but I'm not going back, even though our yesterday's experience was just a single incident, from now on we stop supporting this place.

Really good sushi!!. We went for dinner here tonight before going to a meetup somewhere else and honestly it's one of the best sushi restaurants I've been to...I've been a few times now, and it's just as good now as it was a year ago.<br/><br/>Tonight I had the Salmon Creamcheese Roll with delicious mango in it...sweet, with a little crunch from the red pepper and the ever-awesome creamcheese....I shared a Las Vegas roll with D, had a plate of deliciously fresh gyoza, and tried the Bill's Roll without masago....all super delicious! D had the same salmon creamcheese roll, the other half of the vegas roll, a deep fried cali roll which is always good, and miso soup. It's one of the few japanese place where the miso's actually tasty!<br/><br/>Our buddy J had the Awesome Roll which looked...well...awesome! It was supposedly really really good so I might have to try that one next time...and he had the gyoza like I did , and a Beef Don which I'd never seen at Oyama before. Wow did that one surprise me. It's a nice BIG bowl, not the typical rice bowl sized ones you see elsewhere, and the stuff on top? Not your typical beef and sauteed onions...there was broccoli and all sorts of stuff on it, looked delicious! Loaded with mushrooms though...blech...I'll get it without that if I go to try it ;)<br/><br/>All in all a lovely meal and worth the trip from Richmond!

Quite Disappointing.... Having read so many positive reviews, went there to try their lunch on a weekend. A bit surprised observing that it was not busy at all during lunch time...<br/><br/>Firstly, got a funny smell right after we entered the restaurant. The 2 sushi makers continued their work without giving us a greeting. This was quite awkward compared to other Sushi places.<br/><br/>Finally, we were given a table, with cramped seats. We ordered a bunch of sushies, rolls, tempuras, and sashimies, which I thought should be well enough to feed 3 persons. The waitress asked "That's it?" This was quite an impolite gesture.<br/><br/>All the food got served in quite a short time (because it was not busy at all, I guess). <br/><br/>Overall speaking, not impressive with the food quality. Those sushis and rolls all got broken when we placed them on our plates. The taste was mediocre.<br/><br/>1 or 2 waitresses were still attentive and asked us if we needed more hot tea (but not the one that took our order).<br/><br/>After finishing more than half of the food, a watiress asked if we needed to have the remaining food packed. Then she gave us the bill, and the other waitress began to clean the table (we were there only for less than an hour, and no customer was waiting outside)...<br/><br/>Not a nice dining experience. Since there are so many Japenses restaurants in Burnaby to choose from, I can't convince myself to go back again.

Oh my gosh ! Great Find.. Beautiful old house and gardens, I was afraid the reviews were wrong about the affordability. The prices were very affordable and the value was unequaled. The food was fresh and beautifully prepared and extremely tasty. Miso soup excellent. Our experience was excellent and highly recommend. Staff friendly . So good.

Loved the Food - Loved the price. Late lunch around 2 pm. Ordered the Cali-Dyna lunch combo. Excellent flavor, exceptional size for a meal under $8 Also ordered the ebi sonomono. YUM!<br/>Will return again and again!

Yummy Food, Reasonably priced. Came here with a group in Summer 2013. Someone in the group had made a reservation and we were put in a private room upstairs. The squeeze was a bit tight given the number of people. <br/><br/>But anyway, everyone enjoyed the food. It tasted good and quite fresh. Having the privacy of the room was also nice as we could talk more among ourselves without the background chatter from other people. The restaurant looks like nice inside and out. I had a pleasant dining experience here and will come again. :)
Chris
Very long waiting time. not worth it for just average quality if food. Some fish are not fresh. The owner will give you attitude if you choose give 10% top instead of 15% because you waited for one hour for three dishes.

Exceptional waitress service. I went to eat here with my girlfriend one night. And the waitresses were so nice and had our seats ready within minutes of us entering even in such a busy environment. I was surprised at how attentive they were with our table too. Always offering water and tea when our cups were nearly done. They brought our food just in time as our appetites were getting large. I found the service all together very nice and I do plan to come back again soon!<br/>love from India<br/>Shahir out

WTH happened????. It was my little girl's birthday today and she chose Sushi Oyama for her birthday dinner. We arrived just before 5pm so that we could have dinner early. I had baked a birthday cake and brought it with us. We stood out in the lobby for almost 10 minutes and no one acknowledged us, even though there were only two tables of diners. The sushi makers at the bar saw us but did not call anyone to tend to us. Finally we were seated and waited another 15 minutes before I finally was able to flag someone down to take our order. We ordered teriyaki chicken on rice, udon, dynamite roll, yam roll, gomae and agedashi tofu. The rice for the chicken teriyaki was cold, the tempura prawn and tempura yam in the rolls were refried (probably from the lunch rush) and the gomae was hard. To top it all off, after we finished dinner, we asked the server if we could have 4 plates and 4 forks and a knife so we could cut my daughter's birthday cake. The server said they have a policy that they have to charge us $3.50 if they have to serve us a cake that is brought from outside. Ummmm....I understand that policy if they have birthday cakes to offer and I brought one from outside...but since they don't have that option...and it's my 6 year old's birthday, WHY would I be charged to cut my cake??? It's just 4 more plates and forks for them to wash..... This used to be our family's favourite Japanese restaurant. I think it's safe to say we'll never be going back.

Sushi Oyama's the best place to go. my all time favorite and i'm a regular at this place. It's always good and the sashimi's fresh the rolls are great especially the las vegas roll and the hot food is unbeatable. I always bring my friends and they've turned into oyama addicts. The service is good but the atmosphere of this restaurant shaped like a house really attracts me to come back.

Love this place. Funeral home sushi! Large portions. Fresh. Great prices. Service - so so. Great deck in the summer. Las Vegas roll - drool!! Sashimi is great and lots of it. Eat here!!
Daniela
Worst place to eat. Service sucks impolite servers. They charge you extra for the mayo too.
EatLover
Food okay, bad service...
Imonaplain
Greasy food, poor service. Not a fan of the fusion rolls, most of them are tasteless but doused in "special mayo" or deepfried to mask the poor quality ingredients used. Very hard to get a hold of the wait staff. Skip this one...

Looks Expensive but Really Great Value. Have to thank my sis-in-law for introducing us to Sushi Oyama. It's our favourite sushi restaurant of all time, which is saying something considering how many times we go out for Japanese food. Our favourites include Spicy Salmon Sashimi Don, Prawn Tempura, and Tempura Udon (both my little girls love this dish in particular). Great value since the portions are large and the quality is top-notch. They have lots of fancy maki rolls for the adventurous. Their Dynamite roll has two huge prawn tempura inside. My wife's favourite is their Mangodise and house rolls. The Nigiri sushi has huge pieces of very fresh raw fish on top, unlike other places that skimp on the toppings. <br/><br/>Located in a heritage house/ex-funeral home, its "mansion-like" exterior makes Oyama look like a very expensive restaurant, but don't let its looks scare you off. Your wallet will be pleasantly surprised at the low prices and your stomach will thank you. Even my mom & dad, who are not big sushi fans, love coming here and now bring their friends to Sushi Oyama.<br/><br/>Peace out,<br/><br/>Anthony

Typical Korean-operated Japanese restaurant! We weren't even finished eating the waitress came to our table and said "You have to pay now" Interrupted me and my boyfriend. Did not even say excuse me.
Christina
I went there for a birthday party and the service was horrible. The servers had an attitude problem and also tried to kick our group out when there was 30 minutes to closing. We didn't have time to cut the cake and they charged us a $10 cake fee. When we inquired about the fee and explained what we shouldnt be charged for it, the server said that shes not sure if the manager would waive it. I've never been a place where they charge you a cake fee when they don't even allow you to cut the cake there. It was my first and last time at Oyama.
MMMM. Food
AWFUL SERVICE. 100 percent for food<br/>100 percent for location<br/>100 percent for ambiance<br/>BUT... SERVICE IS THE WORST I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED TIME & TIME AGAIN >>> <br/><br/>I have been there over 15 times because everything else IS AMAZING... but every time I go (as well as friends and family) I am frustrated about the lack of service, and just down right rude waitresses. Ever when there are 3 tables in use and you see 10 employees - good luck even waving them down... they see you waving for the bill, to order, to be seated and the smile and walk away from you....<br/><br/>Often times I wonder if the employees hate the owners because they are slaves or something and they want it to go under... I know that is not the case but the service is SO EXTREMELY TERRIBLE i cannot understand. <br/><br/>What a shame! I still eat there, and so do my friends and most of my family and we always share our new bad experiences with the service... lol- but everything else (food, location and ambiance) beats all the other places in metro area.

Very Average. After reading so many good reviews, I was disappointed by the quality of food here. I ordered the party tray, which includes a variety of maki rolls and sushi. The sushi tasted average with lots of rice. Fish is not the freshest. They do give a large quality of food, but the quality is lacking.
Sushi Addict
Not that great. Thought I should try this place out since seeing it many times. My friend had recommended it. <br/>Ordered Tako sunomono was very good. I oredered some nigiri and that is when it went from good to worse. My unagi was cold which is always a no no for me. Fish not fresh and stale tasting. Also ordered the katsu which was a huge portion that was standard not bad. Can't really mess up on katsu. Service was decent except one bossy lady that looked like she was scaring her workers. Don't think I liked it enough to go back.
CaptainNemo
Extremely Disappointed. As mentioned above, this restaurant is operated by Korean people. This is not an issue for me, but to my surprise, this place is rated pretty high for what they could offer.<br/><br/>I had ordered an Uni cone and it was not fresh, but the sad part of it, is that the seaweed was soggy. I also ordered the tempura udon. The soup was full of MSG, but the tempura was battered with stale breadcrumbs and fried in old oil. I was a little taken back.<br/><br/>The spicy tuna roll was small, but also with sobby seaweed. Then, to top it all off, the Don Katsu Don, was also breaded with stale breadcrumbs.<br/><br/>The house was kinda cute, and the service was okay, but I can't see myself returning here for another dining experience.
Choj
I approve. I thought the food here was pretty good. Service was quick, but that was near closing. Not sure what it is like during rush hour. I would assume it would be fast. Nicely decorated house.

Awesome place! Stopped in for dinner with friends. Beautiful old house, nicely decorated, great sushi. We spent what we normally do in out small town and got double the amount of sushi we normally do! Highly recommend.

Always fresh and tasty. Have become a regular of this restaurant! Great service always
Jessica Tin
My favourite!. I used to come here every week for a year or so until one day I found that the restaurant was previously a funeral home. That is scary. However, the food is extremely delicious! I love the nigiri sushi especially toro, Unagi and Hotategai! They're really delicious with affordable price! Now I try to overcome my fear and visit once in a while but I really miss the food. Delicious and affordable.

Nice place in the area.. In the Metrotown area, people tend to come here or to Sushi Garden for Japanese. This place is more of a full-service restaurant versus the other, and the hot foods and the special rolls don't disappoint very much. The decor is also nice (particularly considering the setting), though over multiple visits the service is hit-or-miss. You have to be willing to flag someone down rather than just wait for someone to come by, which is unfortunate for a restaurant of this type.
Taguchi
Nothing special. The Korean characters indicating that you should "pull" the door open is indication that this is not really a Japanese restaurant. All of the dishes were odd and bore no resemblance to regular Japanese food nor were they tasty enough to be fusion.
Food4elephants
Great Special Rolls. Plus: The food was great! Service was quick and servers were friendly. I would definitely recommend trying their Special rolls (Awesome and Black Dragon Roll were delicious!). <br/>Downside: The glasses were dirty with spec marks, making you second guess how clean the place is. Also some servers could not properly communicate (lack of English). <br/>All in all, I would return because the food was great.

Asking for tip?. My friends and i just went to sushi oyama yesterday night, for my friends birthday. she just turned 15. the bill came to a total of $95, we paid $97, because we are only 15, and we dont have a lot of money. we all paid 10 each. So as we were leaving, one of the waitress yelled out, excuse me, is there no tip? we all said what? excuse me? she said was their something wrong with the service? we all said no. She said so, why dont you guys tip 10-15% or more, so i went in and i paid the rest of the tip. As i was leaving, she said thanks for the tip, now see? now we are both happy.. i wasn't .. my friends and i are never coming back.

Worst customer service BY management. POOR, POOR, POOOR customer service !!!! ever heard of being in a restaurant where the Manager comes to table "snatches" tea and water out of your hand while drinking it, and walks away, without saying anything .... Exactly what happen tonight..... I brought an old friend and was catching up for dinner! Payed the bill and ended up extending our talk when OUT OF NO WHERE the lady manger comes to our table snatches the tea OUT OF OUR HANDS .. yes!!! out of our hands..... without saying a word to us .....all they had to say if they needed the table was "we are busy and we need the table if you can finish up PLEASE!!!" we didn't even get an apology .... tried to clarify the situation with the other manger/boss who happen to be the husband of the wife ..... while apologizing, lady comes up to him "YELLS @ him in their language" and says in english "THEY NEED TO LEAVE" really!!! REALLY!!! tell me how i should be back to this place EVER AGAIN ... the worst customer service from the lady manger I have had in my life ... this lady abuses her staff, and you can tell how shaky they are around her, and the first time i was there while restaurant was empty, with MANY seats available, requested a booth with husband, she looked us in the eyes ...ignored us, and we were about to grab the table we wanted ... she looked at us and said with a smirk on her face that they were busy .....WHAT A CUSTOMER SERVICE THIS PLACE HAS
Nommer92
AWESOME ROLL!!!. We always come here for our awesome roll fix--perfect place to go if you're in the Metrotown and don't want to go for the Food Court. Unagi roll and chopped scallop rolls are definitely recommended. Sashimi portions are reasonable, but need to be trimmed a bit more carefully as we occasionally find a bone in one of the pieces.<br/><br/>Ambience is quite nice, but you wouldn't expect it to be a restaurant from the outside.

All I could hope and wish for. Before I moved to Burnaby, I came into Sushi Oyama and it was still in its grand opening state. I am pleased to say its standards still havent changed whenever I go back to visit. Food prices are incredibly great (along with their portions), food always tastes fresh, atmosphere is always comfortable and people are very welcoming and friendly :) Have never had a bad encounter there and friends I bring along always have the same reaction!

It looks like a chalet and so we went in. Wife wanted sushi and we stopped in here. Why not?<br/>Ait is close by my travel route to my place. There is nothing here to set the place apart from other hole in the wall sushi places, but it is fine. Not sure why women like sushi, but I don't have a problem. I've tried many times and all of them are poor and we all know Oriental service. Nothing is outstanding, but nothing is bad and the prices are right for a weeknight dinner wife.

Awesome sushi at a reasonable price. A lot nicer inside than a lot of other sushi places out there. If you go, definitely try the Red Dragon Roll!

Won't give us a table.. Wife and I wanted to have quick sushi dinner. Told the hostess that need a table for 2. Table for 4 keep emptying so she kept bringing party of 4 go in even the ones that came after us!! Finally, a table for 2 cleared, we finally got to our table 30 minutes after we arrived. Needless to say, we never went back

Sake in teapot?. Sat down, waited 10 minutes for server to come take our order. Then proceeded to order a large sake, crab dynamite roll, chopped scallop roll, deep fried california roll, unagi roll, and salmon sashimi. Sake came in a teapot, it got cold quickly and it was bad. The rice on the rolls were half cooked except for the deep friend california roll; did they not take the course "rice cooking 101"? The pieces were cut unevenly, and there were a lot of rice; it felt as if I was eating at an all you can eat place. A worker from the kitchen went out for a cigarette 3 times during that one hour, is there no employee smoking area at the back entrance? The only positive thing I can give is the sashimi.
Ilovetoeat
Nice place but disappointed with the food. A restored old house makes the restaurant very unique! the salmon sashimi was very disappointing... they used the end part of the fish which is very thin and not even presentable and appropriate for a sashimi. that part should be used for a salmon roll instead. what a pity for a cool place!
Wolfdenoir
I you are a rolls fan, don't go to this restaurant.. I recently went to Oyama to try their sushi. Being a huge fan of rolls, I ordered a straight suite of pure-rolls - House Roll, Dynamite Roll, Red Roll and Chopped Scallop Roll. After a reasonable wait, the orders came. Their House and Dynamite rolls were both huge in size, with the Dynamite having 2 ebi in them, which I think is pretty good value. However I was disappointed by the House roll because it had very little sashimi inside. Most of its space was filled with crab meat, which makes this practically just a huge California roll. The ebi in the Dynamite was not fresh, nor is the tobiko on top of the rolls. The other 2 rolls I ordered were okay, not particularly delicious though. When I picked up the sushi with my hand, the rice bits keeps falling and sticking on my fingers so I had to wipe it every time. That was not too pleasant either. I have to say I am not pleased with their rolls, although I know they have huge portions of Sashimi orders because I saw what the other table had. If you are a rolls fan like me, you can find much better food at Kiku Sushi which is just near by, beside London Drugs on Kingsway.

Lovely atmosphere. This restaurant is located centrally at Kingsway and Royal Oak in a beautiful house just a few blocks from Metrotown. The prices are amazing, especially the combos. We got the $18 roll combo for 42 pc, $7 prawn tempura (huge prawns!) and $8 chicken teriyaki including rice. For this price, 4 adults + 1 child ate until we were stuffed for $40.00 with leftovers to spare. <br/><br/>I would highly recommend this restaurant. If you order take out 1 hour prior to pickup and pay cash, you get 5% off. Unlike a lot of cheap Japanese restaurants, this one had nice decor and ambience. The tempura batter is very light and crispy and the rolls are pretty big.<br/><br/>My only complaint is that the service is slow and servers are not very attentive. Our tea was not refilled at all and we had to try for several minutes to get the bill and then wait for at least 5 minutes at the counter to pay.

A good food. My family love to come here for a lunch or dinner.and I brought my friends to here ,they said this place is better --better sitting and better food.

Sushi Oyama is amazing! The sushi came in large amounts, and the miso soup was the best i had in a while. I highly recommend the black dragon roll. The flavours collaborated so well with eachother. Best sushi i've had in a long time. Definately coming back!
