Review Mr Ho Wonton House - Burnaby

Sandhya Gamage
I have noticed the quality of food has been going down. This evening, I ordered $85 worth food. The diced chicken with cashew nut dish, had a few tiny chicken pieces (about 3-5%) and the rest was large chunks of celery. They should not have served this dish as chicken. When I phoned to give my feedback, manager was rude and told me no one else has issue with the proportion. I want to support local resturants during this tough time but this bussiness lost my support today.

I really appreciate the decor of the house, so warm and so nostalgic that it takes you back to a past wonton house in Canton, China. I truly enjoyed the comfort of the whole setting, the good service, and the tasty food.
John !
I would give this place 0 stars if I could. Service was typical of a chinese restaurant so I cannot judge that aspect but the food was a different story. Ordered 3 orders of chinese donut to go along with my other dishes and all 3 orders of chinese donuts were extremely hard and stale. Like they were over a week old and they still had the decency to sell them to customers. Yah i will definitely be staying away from this place.

We order from this restaurant quite regularly and I was disgusted yesterday when I found cockroach in my food. I feel sick even think about how many of those things I might’ve eaten in past times eating their food. I’m going to call health and safety department because this is disgusting.

Wonderful place for a quick Chinese food. Price is good and service is awesome.

Ordered on door dash. Didn’t read reviews first but wish we did. The ginger beef tasted like spicy pepper and vinegar. No ginger, no sweet. It was very strange. Not sure if they made a mistake or that’s their usual. The fried rice was very bland. Definitely won’t be ordering from them again.

Pretty bland and off tasting Chinese take out. Price wasn't terrible, but for the food it wasn't worth it. Ginger beef was labeled as spicy but was just slimy and oddly flavorless. Chicken balls were good, but the sweet sour sauce was pretty weird and didn't taste all that pleasant.

We used to come here many years ago and I remember how much I enjoyed the food each time we have gone. We recently moved to New Westminster and decided to give it a try again. Not at all how I remember it. Very disappointed. Probably the worst and blandest Chinese food I have had in a long while. Almost like they didn't bother to put any kind of spices or seasoning at all. We ordered 4 items: sweet & sour pork, chicken with garlic & bean sauce, bbq pork fried rice and shredded chicken chow mein. ALL BLAND. Worst part is they actually included the back part of the chicken in the chicken with garlic & bean sauce! It was mostly bones! How can a restaurant include what essentially is a throw-away part of the chicken (or if you really want to save , use it to create broth) in a $16 food item. The sweet & sour pork was all fat! Outrageous! Sorry, but we aren't coming back.

Amazing food ! Fried rice needed a bit more flavour! <br/>Great staff amazing staff

My last visit was in early July for lunch with a friend from work.  In simple the food quality was very poor - tasted horrible.  When I complained the waitress just brushed off my complaint.  I will not be going back to Mr. Ho's period.  Poor quality food and very poor service.  Recommend anyone reading this not to eat at Mr. Ho's, go elsewhere, the food and service are not worth the money.

Food is still good if you can put up with the shitty attitudes of the manager and staff.  When I complained about my takeout order having no utensils, no soy sauce, and no cookies, I was told that if I had stayed in to eat I would have gotten good customer service, I asked what she meant by that, did she mean that because I order takeout I should expect shitty service, she then yelled at me in Mandarin and hung up on me.

Mr. Ho was our chosen spot for lunch recently - we (as a threesome) arrived at the restaurant shortly after it opened at 11 am, and were able to catch a place to park in the small lot at the back.<br/><br/>We were warmly greeted upon entering, and shown to booth seating by the window.  Our server then brought a large pot of hot tea, mugs, and menus as soon as we had seated -- her service was friendly and helpful throughout our stay.  Service to our table of the dishes ordered, was very prompt.  During our meal, the owner (who had been working at the service counter), made-rounds to all occupied tables (a good number at that time) - for a big place, I found that a rather nice touch, and enjoyed our short chat.<br/><br/>Food ordered:  Appetizer:  honey garlic chicken wings (chicken wings w/sauce and a few pieces of pineapple) -- Seafood:  fresh squid w/salt & hot pepper (breaded squid (body pieces) w/garlic, and lightly seasoned) -- Veggies:  pan-fried chop suey (mixed) veggies (broccoli, sweet corn, baby bok choy, mushroom, carrot and onion) -- Chow Mien:  house special chow mein (dry noodles, broccoli, sweet corn, mushroom, shrimp, slices of chicken, beef, and pork).<br/><br/>Presentations were fine - quite colourful, and served up in good portion sizes.  Preparations, as a whole, though rather well-prepared, were not particularly unique in composition, or flavourfully 'exciting' with distinctive tastes -- vegetable dish, though ingredients included different veggies, composition was mostly broccoli, and lacked a good selection of 'different' veggies, sauce/stock lacked a little in tasty flavour -- chow mein dish included the same kinds of veggies used in the veggie dish, and lacked a touch in flavour -- squid was very tender and flavourful (mostly from the garlic in the preparation), but breading was rather soggy -- wings were tender, flavourful and tasty, but the preparation quite greasy.<br/><br/>Though not particularly "wowed" by the food tried at Mr. Ho, the dishes ordered, restaurant's rather nice ambiance, and good, friendly service, provided a fun, and enjoyable lunch dining experience.ere? Include that too! And remember, your review needs to be at least 140 characters long :)

Racist Establishment<br/><br/>I can not believe that I have to write this review. We have been ordering from Mr Ho's for years, and never had an issue. Tonight I ordered food that my wife was picking up for us. They gave my wife the wrong order, and called her once she had arrived home at home. They said that they would be willing to bring us our order, but would have to charge us $15 more. We objected to this because A) they gave us the wrong food and it was their mistake, and B) we have young children who were hungry and starting to get fussy.<br/><br/>This is where this story goes sideways. When it was clear that we would not come to a mutual agreement, I told the hostess to come and pick up the wrong order and simply refund us our money. The hostess said, "I can't believe you Canadians would do this. You Canadians are so stupid! We are not refunding and just keep the food!" She then hung up on me.<br/><br/>After many years of going to this establishment, I am shocked and very disappointed to get a blatant racist remark from a person who lives and works in Canada. I will never go back to this place, and will deter my friends from going to a restaurant that allows their employees to be overtly racist toward its customers and have poor customer service.

Staff is very friendly and delivery service is good. Be careful what you order though, because some items are catered to local tastes. Good quality items, but just a bit bland. Don't order the congee. Chow mein and pan friend rice noodle is good. 2/5 for food. 4/5 for service and convenience.

Have been since i was a child. The place is family friendly with benefits of good food and a friendly environment. The staff here is very friendly.

If you're looking for quality & affordable Chinese food in Burnaby, this is your place. As a kid, I grew up living in South Burnaby and Mr. Ho was near our neighbourhood so it was always a treat when my parents would take us to eat here or even bring us take out dinner.<br/>As the years flew by, we've seen this place change but the food quality hasn't! Very friendly group of staff here who care about the customers and their satisfaction. <br/>Till this day I would take my parents to have dinner here on a special occasion, ordering them their favourite fook chow fried rice...😊
Simon
I've passed by this place so many times but never bothered to go in (because I get better Chinese food at home, that's why!) But tonight it was my friend's pick and also in part because we were curious about how just how many types of wontons there could be in a wonton house, we wandered in. Curious mix of both Chinese and non-Chinese persons. Hmm... At least for sure it would be easy for non-Chinese persons to order, which was great for the two of us.

Yo this food is the best Chinese food I've ever had so far. Their sweet and sour pork is dope. Check out the fried rice it's so fire!! But seriously this restaurant is very excellent!!

Friendly quick service - Re.... Friendly quick service -<br/>Really cheap lunch menu- lots of choices.<br/>Good value. The boss lady is very nice!
Kasey
I don't like boss lady too!. I went for lunch and was not pleased with her attitude. Not sure why she's so chatty with very selective customers and giving them freebies. I got a Chinese face like her but I felt her customer service was poor. I didn' t receive any comps like the previous customers who left before I did. Her husband knows how to deal with customers ...very friendly and always has a smile on his face including the waitresses working there. Food is good with good portions. But the boss lady should go practice and study up on "good manners" to everyone who walks through Mr. Ho's doors.

Go elsewhere pls.. Perhaps, one of the worst Chinese restaurants in Burnaby area. The foods are not authentic and lack flavors. I have no idea why this place has been voted as the best Chinese restaurant in Burnaby for the last 4 yrs.

Mr.ho you no good. Worst place to go.

Great food really fresh! I was late picking up my order it was not so hot when I arrived home the food was so fresh I could not tell the difference reheating it ! This was the 4th place I tried in Burnaby and yep found it ! I will definitely be a returning customer. The breaded chicken balls are made in house with with large peaces of chicken ,the black bean sauce was amazing with fresh ingredients . Wonton soup was tasty with its own characteristic flavour . This is not a cookie cutter Chinese restaurant it has character freshness and flavour . You will not regret it !

Boss Lady - Stay At Home!!!. I don’t like the boss lady who works there.<br/><br/>I usually pick up a set dinner and every time I go there, I would always get a boxed fortune cookies. With other ladies, I would be offered with tea. When the boss lady worked, she would use her hand to grab the fortune cookies and she would close it in a semi-tight fist and then dropped them in the bag. During those times, I usually just threw away the cookies. Who would want to eat cookies that were grabbed by a possibly sweaty hand? Who knows where her hands had been?<br/><br/>I work in the health care field and hand washing to me is very important!<br/><br/>Still, the food was delicious. The fried rice, the chicken, etc were great. That was one reason I would go back, plus other ladies were friendly. Still, who knows if the boss lady spit at my food in the kitchen!<br/><br/>One last time I went there, the boss lady rudely told me that I could grab the fortune cookies from the rubber box. The boxed fortune cookies, she said, were for customers who ordered more than $40. Mine usually cost about $24. Then she walked away and went to another counter and pretended to do something. Then she came back and gave me my order. She was rough. Then few seconds before I paid for the order, customers from the served table came to the front to pay their bill. THEN this lady boss faked her smile and started to ask me how things were. I couldn’t believe her sudden behaviour change! <br/><br/>I had then made the decision – I would never go back! To me, she thinks she is high and mighty. I mean I don’t dress like a pauper and I am Chinese like she is. Yet she had this dislikeable attitude toward me!<br/><br/>One week later, I got soft and I called them. When I heard the lady boss’ voice, I hung up and I ordered things from the restaurant next to theirs. Ever since, I had not gone back. I ordered stuff from the surrounding restaurants instead.<br/><br/>The boss lady should retire and stay at home!!!

#1 - Thats a joke. In desperation because my fav places were closed, I ordered pick up from Mr.Ho's. The Hostess was very rude when i asked her if i could add sweet and sour sauce to my broccoli. She said NO. When picking up there was confusion because she wrote my number down wrong. When getting home and opening my food she forgot to put my drink in the bag. I called in asking what they would do and she said "Next time you get free a free pop." HOW IS IT FREE IF IVE PAID FOR IT. When asking her if her delivery guy could drop it off. She said "oh no point it will take to long." I asked her if she'd give me 10% off my next order if i EVER order from them again. and she quickly said no. At first she even tried to deny that I had ordered the coke when it was clearly on the receipt. <br/><br/>Customer Service = SUCKS<br/><br/>The food edible. Was it tasty? No. My broccoli was floating in msg i couldn't even eat it. The hot and sour soup was bland. The congee was Ok. But you can't really mess up Congee<br/><br/>Food = Mediocre

Will NEVER GO AGAIN. Not worth it at all...Neither the food nor the service

WORST FOOD AND SERVICE. This is the worst service i have encounter in my life. My waitress looks like she is half awake and has been partying all night although she looks like she is old enough to be my great grand mother. I asked for ice water and the waitress said nothing and just threw the cup of water on the table. Afterwards we ate the crappy congee we asked for the bill and everyone else got a fortune cooking but us. Then we gave the waitress 8 dollars for a 6.25 order and she tried to keep the change. That is like a 20% tip for crappy food and service. I REPEAT NEVER GO HERE TO EAT IF YOU REALLY WANT TO WALK INTO THIS PLACE JUST ASK THEM IF YOU CAN USE THE WASHROOM AND MAKE A BIG MESS AND LEAVE.

The food is bad and the service is bad if you don't speak English.

Service is good but not the food. Clean place with decent and quick service however the food is lacking. I had the Wonton Noodle Soup which was adequate but had a massive pile of overcooked noodles thrown on top. I tried out one of their "specialities" as well the Sichuan style beef with soft noodle. The Sichuan beef was well cooked but greasy and lacked any sort of flavour. The beef and veggies were well cooked but I just couldn't understand the lack of flavour. The noodles were again overcooked.

Combination plates. Last night Wife and I went to Mr. Ho's Wonton House in Burnaby on Kingsway and I must tell you what a great meal we had there. We ordered combo plate #a and combo plate #d and everything we had was delicious. The atmosphere was great the waitress and hostess were very friendly and very helpful. They started off with wonton soup which was delicious and then brought us an egg roll each which was awesome and then our meal came. The Wife and I ordered the two combo plates so we could split them up. Everything came piping hot and fresh . One combo featured chicken chow mien with sweet and sour pork and fresh beef chop suey and the other featured lemon chicken fried pork rice and some more beef chop suey. Everything was outstanding the food the service and the atmosphere . My Wife and I would go back for sure to this great restaurant. They have been voted best Chinese food in Burnaby for ten years and I can definitely agree with that. The total bill including the free hot tea for us both was $ 29.35 with tax included.I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone that enjoys good Chinese food!!

Meh.... Was trying to find a good chinese food place, and from the reviews it looked like this one was decent, not too greasy, and very close by.<br/>we called to order takeout, which was actually a lot more difficult than it sounds because the woman on the phone kept, without warning, putting the phone down to talk to other people while she was taking my order. every time, I'd be in the middle of a sentence and suddenly realize no one was on the other end. her greeting whenever she would pick it up again: "HUH??"<br/>either way the food was okay, pretty bland and the chow mein was super dry (?) so we had to actually add sauce to it, it wasnt too greasy though which i guess was a plus. will be trying somewhere else next time though.

Food is ok as in edible. Service and attitude of waitresses are terrible. They are rude and downright mean. DO not come here for a nice meal. You will leave this place frustrated and upset. Order takeout if u must.

Used to Have Good Service. Last two times we picked up from there service has been terrible. First time we ordered 11$ soup and got a small regular won-ton soup. We went back to complain and they just apologized, didn`t even offer to refund us even though we paid for what we ordered and got cheap soup instead. <br/><br/>This time we ordered and only got one bag -- they forgot to give us the rest of our order! We got home and discovered our meal was not all there so we had to drive all the way back. They said WE forgot to take the bag, when they didn`t even know where it was! Once they finally found it, they didn`t even say sorry nor offer us a refund or discount for our troubles.<br/><br/>Used to order from this place all the time, since the service went down so much I will NOT be going back for a while.

Splendid!. I took a new job in the neighborhood and the crew I am working with are leading the way to the local spots right now and it is simply awesome. It is almost like I have moved to a new city. All new places and I even have a few new cuisines planned. <br/><br/>After reading the reviews for this place I was puzzled to find how much the actual experience contradicted them. It seemed a lot of visitors had expectations relating to the fare and then were ultimately self-disappointed. I don't believe this is a fare approach to rating establishments. <br/><br/>Every single bite was simply perfect and satiated the tongue and mind. We did not order anything extravagant, Chow Mein, General Chow's Chicken, Spicy Beans and some Hot and Sour Soup. The service was warm and colourful and for a party of five to walk away for under $55 (healthy tip included) this place is a must eat!
Sashacoco
No good. Well after avoiding this place for the last couple of years due to bad meals, we decided to give it a try again. Went in October and ordered the dinner combo meals at $13.25 each. Portions were huge and food was decent but you know the bill comes to about $30 + tip so it's not cheap. Went again last night due to desperation because Anatolia's turkish place had no beef. All I can say is we won't be back. We ordered the same dinner combos but this time they came on a small plate. Portions were about half of what we got last time. Fried rice was greasy, spring rolls were greasy, sweet and sour pork was hard as rock. I don't know why people continue to vote this place best in Burnaby! Very inconsistent and the food sucks. Hon's in New West is a step up.<br/><br/><br/>-----03 Dec, 2011-----<br/><br/>Just another bad chinese place. We have eaten here plenty of times mostly out of desperation for a quick chinese food fix. Each time we find ourselves wondering why we go back! Food is really not that good considering they're usually pretty busy. Service is very poor and they are so nonchalant about your meal taking over half hour to arrive. Will stop going there.
Wraithman
The food is soooo Americanized here. I'm not even Chinese, and i can tell it's americanized. It's also evident in their lack of Chinese customers. Taste is not that bad but the service is disgusting. Had to ask 4 times for extra table settings only to be snapped at by the waitress while also pointing her index finger in my friend's face. All the servers were rude. One lady, which I presume is the owner (bc she was the only one working in sweats) was the only one I saw interacting customers. Why would u wear sweats to work?? And why do u talk sooo loud-I jumped twice during lunch
Peter E
I ordered the shanghai noodles with three types of meat. It tasted burnt, it was pretty much the same color including the meat. It didn't have much flavor at all. I was very disappointing considering it was awarded best Chinese food in burnaby. I should've heeded the other reviews. What a waste of money. I won't go back.

Very good western chinese. This is about how far you seem to have to go from the city to eat western chinese. Its good and the meat quality also seems very good.

My favorite place for a chinese food fix. Great friendly staff. Quick service. Would definitely recommend.

Won't Get Fooled Again. I've gone to this place several times because they brag that they've been voted Burnaby's Best 10 years in a row... I've been disappointed every time.<br/><br/>To summarize my last meal (combo A for one):<br/>-poured out the won-ton soup because the pieces were rubbery and smelled very fishy; tasted old - the shrimp were grey in colour<br/>-threw away half of the S&S pork; rubbery, fatty, and low quality<br/>-beef chop suey was limp and mushy<br/>-chicken chow mein was quite plain, but the best thing on the plate because at least it was not offensive<br/>-spring roll was OK; probably from COSTCO<br/><br/>Save your money and don't believe the "Burnaby's Best" sign.

We had tried this restaurant a few years ago and never thought we would give it a second chance. Well we did and it refreshed my memory on just how bad it was greasy food that all tastes the same!!

Want MSG and Oil-drenched food? COME HERE!!. I made one of the biggest dining mistakes of my life: choosing to come to this place. <br/><br/>I had the shredded chicken and pineapple fried rice. 1. so much oil the rice gleamed in the light, 2. the chicken was dry and bland. I could have been blindfolded and been told it was pork and I wouldn't have known the difference, 3. the pineapples were way too big compared to the other ingredients.<br/><br/>I had the Assorted Meat Bean Curd Hot Pot. In the Chinese translation, it's 8 different ingredients. I couldn't 5, including the lettuce at the bottom which I don't count as one of the 8. The chicken was the chicken breast and was dry and had absolutely no taste, just like the rice. The BBQ pork was dry like the chicken. The shrimp was small as hell. So basically they were advertising 8 ingredients but served 4. <br/><br/>I will NEVER go to this place again. I should have known from the name to go elsewhere, but I was reminded that I ate at this restaurant when it was at a different location and enjoyed my visits. <br/><br/>I'm guess all the reviewers at Burnaby Now are white and/or have no real taste in Chinese cuisine because this place has been the "best" Chinese restaurant in Burnaby for 10 years.

Dr. Ho's. Okay, I know it's not "Dr Ho's" but for some reason, we always call it that. I suppose because it's the perfect cure for our craving for Chinese food. <br/>This is the kind of place where you'll either like it or hate it. The food is kind of westernized dishes (similar to Rose Garden) but it is very satisfying when you have a craving for it. We always get the spicy wontons and the green beans when we get take out.<br/>They are really fast in their kitchen! I work nearby and they always have the food ready by the time I get there when I phone in for take-out (within 10-15 minutes). I asked them once about that and they said they had an army in the kitchen (and I don't doubt it). It's also nice getting the fortune cookies in the little chinese take-out containers.

For Easily Accessible Chinese Food.... Yes, we all have our guilty pleasures. At times, North Americanized Chinese food is one of mine. Cold rainy days in Vancouver are a welcome companion for commonplace dishes such as wor wonton soup, fried rice and the dreaded (but often beloved) ginger beef. Of the latter, I don't think I've ever had it the way they prepare it here, in really thin slivers, with that distinct sweet/spicy coating that makes this addictive to some. When I want to "dumb it down", with understandable Chinese grub, places like Mr. Ho do me right.

Hit and miss. I've been there a few times. Sometimes its OK and sometimes it's just bad. It's a place to go if you are craving basic chinese food and you live in the area and don't feel like driving anywhere.

I wouldn’t go as far to say Mr. Ho’s is gourmet Chinese food, in fact it’s pretty much anything you’d get at a Chinese hole in the wall or cafe. So what exactly makes it different from the rest – and more specifically, able to win 10 awards for best Chinese food in Burnaby? I’m thinking it’s either their to-go lunch specials that are $5.75 or maybe the fact that the waitresses and the managers are friendly and speak English. Which proves that customer service can really make a place (are you listening out there, Chinese hole in the walls?).

It was rather late on our excursion but it was decided on the car ride back that we are having chinese food to finish off our journey for the day trip. And for some reason, we all had a mental block as to where else to eat. But this place came to mind. We were all pretty excited to eat here because to be honest, none of us four have ever been here before. And here is the perfect reason for it…………………………… Check out Food For Buddha's post here! Mr. Ho Wonton House 6731 Kingsway, Burnaby BC Tel#: (604) 540-6746 Upon entering this place I noticed something really interesting. There wasn't a single chinese person eating here. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, tell tell signs I guess, we paid no attention. We sorted our orders and went at it, here is the shanghai fried noodles, and this was probably the most flavorful dish for the entire night. No kidding. We ordered 2 soups here, one is the wontons and the other is their shui kau . Soso fo

It's no surprise to you that I like to go out to eat during game days to avoid the crazy Canucks madness. I am a horrible Vancouverite, but my love of eating is stronger than suffering from anxiety of watching the Canucks games. M and I went out to Mr. Ho's Wonton House on Kingsway after watching a movie at Metrotown. I have not been here in years and I do love Chinese food. On the ride from Metrotown, he wanted to go to all these fast food places and I shut down all of his suggestions until we go to Mr. Ho's. KFC and Subway are not good dinner choices….*sigh.* men….. I really wanted to get noodles since Kung Fu Panda 2 since it just seemed right to do so. Unfortunately, if I was going to a ramen place, I would have gotten noodles. I saw some of the rice items on Mr. Ho's menu and that drew my attention… plus noodle at Mr. Ho's can't be that amazing. I think I am a sucker when it comes to Asian themed things such as interior décor. I loved their walls. Like any Chinese place, yo

Mr. Ho Wonton House is basic Canadian-Chinese. To borrow a phrase, “It is what it is”….a very popular restaurant amongst folk who prefer a simple approach to Asian cuisine.

All in all it’s safe to say that I actually didn’t mind the experience here, and if I feel like this type of cuisine it’s nice to know there’s a place close by.
