Review Lhy Thai Restaurant - Burnaby

Danny Yang
Ordered a few times from here and overall, the food and price are both very good. We tried the curry as well as the pad si-ew and I definitely recommend both. The downside would be the portion. I would assume that in an effort to keep prices low, the portion is on the (very) small side and I really wish there was an option to just pay more and get a portion that is filling. Right now it's kind of stuck in that middle where I simply do not get full from one order, but two orders would make it too much.

We enjoyed the authentic Thai dishes here. Pictures of the food can be found at the entrance. Great service from the owner. Prices are very reasonable. Coming back soon.

My favorite thai restaurant... have never found a better one! The owners are friendly and the food is fantastic. They are only open for take-out at this time. I can't wait for dine-in to resume!

BEST TOM YUM SOUP EVER!!! I've been a customer for over 10 years and I have yet to find any other Thai restaurant that can beat their soup. Their spring rolls, stuffed chicken wings and deep friend banana desserts are all fried perfectly too! My favourite meal ever!

Went for lunch with my friend. We ordered the pad thai, green curry combo, and tom yum soup. They were all mildly seasoned which I liked. Small portion, but reasonable price. Very friendly staffs.

Authentic Thai food flavours, the $7.95 lunch combos are amazing, good size portions, unbeatable price, they prepare orders very fast, convenient when you don't have enough time to enjoy your lunch.

It wasn't the best Thai restaurant I've been to, but the quality was decent with a reasonable price. We ordered Tom Kha Gai (chicken in coconut soup); it was a little bit too sour. The server recommended Panang for curry and it was quite good. The deep fried banana with icecream was bigger than we expected.

They have good foods. I appreciate the friendliness of the owner. Compared to other Thai restaurants, I could say the price here cheaper. I ordered a stuffed fried chicken and pineapple fried rice. It tastes good:)

I've ate at many thai restaurants in the GVRD and I was quite surprised when coming here and trying this place out for the first time - negatively speaking.

I should have read all the reviews, in particular within the past 2 years, before coming here. Seems something happened to the owners for them to go from decent to just plain bad now and the reviews out there are correct.

AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE. DO NOT BE CHARMED BY THEIR 'FAMILY RUN' SLOGAN.

Even after finishing my meals, I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt that this during the pandemic (Or that we were just hungry - never order on a hungry stomach) perhaps the business was struggling hence the demerit points I am about to describe, however in the end, I could only think of one word - ripoff.

This isn't a 3 or 4 star restaurant, it's a hole in the wall style restaurant located in the Edmonds area of Burnaby, where low income meets cosmopolitan living borders.

It's supposed to represent value and reasonable quality and taste - in fact, that's how the business advertise themselves.

Do not be fooled, it is far from it.

First thing first, we tried calling nearly 3 times and there was nobody picking up. So we went to the store physically to order.

The owner did not seem happy at all, looked kind of impatient and inconvenienced. I mentioned nicely we tried calling but nobody picked up and he just shrugged it off.

It was not until we ordered 10 dishes that he started becoming slightly satisfied.

10 dishes (1 soup, 1 appetizer, 1 salad, 2 combos, 5 main dishes) - $104 total.

Let me first and foremost talk about weight of all the food.

Weight = 3 pounds total. Literally 3 pounds this place.

The portions were so small, that I thought I had ordered split tasting menu for each of the main dishes. Literally, each main dish, at $10 a pop spread out, were less than a cup of food. Approximately 250 ml in size but less per main dish. At most other similar restaurants, you'd at least receive 2-3 times that amount for maybe only $2-3 more and those other places have much higher rent.

The seafood soup we ordered was watered down with nothing inside except in total 6 pieces of frozen, sad looking shrimp and squid slices in TOTAL - $10 soup.

Taste was overly salty for all the foods. They use canned curry which was shocking to me.

Texture was DRY DRY DRY. All our meats were OVERCOOKED, dry bits of very low quality meat. What stood out was their Crying Tiger dish, which was charcoaled and dry like jerky - barely edible.

Ever ate at Richmond Public Market? Spend $10 per meal and get fed with better quality food, taste and portion. This is how bad this scam restaurant is.

The overall quality of this restaurant is very poor, they use leftover ingredients from previous days and their pork has a funny smell, which I suspect was going bad so we threw out the pork dish. Even trying to mask the pork with heavy spices, the funny smell came through.

The inside of the restaurant also looks very cluttered and dirty.

One last kicker, this place they also automatically combine the tip and tax together. So we were charged almost HST rates(13%) when including the tip they sneak into their awfully hand written receipts.

Good thing I chose no tip on the visa machine as I usually do that for take out but this is just bad on their part - sneaking in tips without customer consent.

It was our first time and we have not had Thai food for awhile so we were craving it.

I hope the owners sees this review because WE WILL NOT BE RETURNING.

This was not a small order for your restaurant, you should be ashamed.

I will be spreading this review everywhere.

I used to order this place many times because the food is actually good. But they don’t pick up the phone calls since I tried so many times to order for takeout. I marked this rate for that.

i was wondering how did i miss this restaurant when i have lived in the neighbourhood for a few years, i love thai food but ever since eating pad thai in thip samai in bkk, my perception of thai food i have high standard of thai food, especially pad thai, the location is quite packed during lunch hours, however during off hours, is quite relaxed, say maybe 11am or 1/2pm. The food is well seasoned, the taste of padthai is rich (the slight citric flavour from lemon and sweetness from sugar is present) and have layers (i'm guessing some sort of oil, similar to shrimp oil, but not sure what it's), one of the better padthai i have tasted in vancouver area. definitely worth stopping by if you're in the area. for the other meals, my dad loves the lunch special as well, can't remember which one he ordered but it have beef in it.

Really delicious food, well priced, super friendly staff. They were very happy to accommodate for my dietary needs and its delicious every time. I wish they were open more often though

Let me start by saying the people who run the little restaurant are so kind and helpful. I have not been to many thai places before and the friends who went with me love their food. I ordered a spicy beef dish which had wonderful flavour but was very dry. I tried my friends spinich and chicken with peanut sauce and liked that very much. I found it very expensive for what you get.
Murg Wurgle
Some if the best red curry I've ever had. Definitely get the in house hot sauce, and try the garlic pork if you want some amazing flavors. Paul the owner is a friendly chap to boot.
Almost Everything
Small, family owned restaurant. Tried curry, diced chicken? and Pad Thai. Portions are on the smaller side but I really like the pad thai. Small portion reflects on the price.

Found ppl raving about this place...gave it a try.
Average and overpriced food. Skimpy on ingredients.
Ordered pineapple fried rice...got 6 pieces of pineapple and i can barely see any chicken meat as it was so shredded it blended in with the rice. Expected some tumeric...but nope...No flavor. And menu listed shrimp...hmm....instead got little papery dried shrimps. My mom and I had a hard time chewing them...while we ate, we literally kept shaking our heads XD
for the price of $10.95, expected something semi decent...but it ended up tasting like what any average asian can cook. May explain why very little asians frequent this joint.

Can find much better thai cuisine elsewhere, try the place at joyce station. The "wok hey" stir fried smoke flavor is great with their pad thai.

Why are you even open. I've tried here and iThai and iThai is about 100 times better. I don't know why the reviews are so good here. Have you guys ever had a decent Thai dish? I've tried pad thai and curry. Pad thai is soaked in ketchup and sugary taste. And portion is ridiculous. I thought I ordered a kid's meal. Curry was alright but again portion was horrible.

Be aware. Not worth your time and money.

Edmonds area hidden gem. Great Thai food for a decent price. Service and establishment could use a little work but if looking for some good eats ,highly recommend

Great small family restaurant. Family fav! Great food and fair prices. The service is good, the meal comes quickly, however, the space is small.

Wouldn't even think about eating Thai food anywhere else!!. This is hands down my favourite Thai restaurant. The owners are so sweet and the food is amazing. They know us by name and remember what we order every single time. No other Thai place even comes close to measuring up in terms of food quality or service. This place is a gem.

Tried two Thai restaurants on edmond in two days. First went to the Thai, the food is good, portion is big. Compare to that, lhy is not as tasty and the portion is so small. I mean really really small. Considering so many people vouched this place, maybe it was good before :(

Will not be back - Owner said "Good, Please spread the word... I dont like busy". I have been going to Lhy Thai for about 2 years now with my co-workers, but the last couple of times we have gone, to service was poor and it seems the food has changed slightly...? 2 co-workers went there on Wednesday and 1 of them didn't end up getting their food, so when the other had finished her plate the other one asked for her food to go, because they had to go back to work. We do (did) LOVE this place, so we decided to go back today (Thursday) to give them a second chance. Although we did have a group of 6, we did call an reserve a table and we got there at about 11:40 (before the lunch rush) We all ordered, and we all got our food except for one person again..?.?.? So we reminded the waiter about his meal, by then we all were almost done our meals... a few more minutes went by and still nothing (now we are all done our meals) So I went up to the till and asked them to pack up his meal to take back to the office (by this time it was 12:30) and then I proceeded to tell the Owner (I believe) that this type of service was unacceptable, especially to have it happen 2 days in a row and I told that we would NOT be back... GUESS WHAT HE TOLD ME????? He said "GOOD! Thank you! Please spread the word.?.?" and then with his accent he said "I don't like busy - Please spread the word" again.?.? I was floored!!!! He has always been so nice in the past, and he knows we are regulars.
So hear I am spreading the word... I guess he doesn't want our business, which is fine by me seeing how downhill that place has gone. Too bad! It was one of my favorite places to eat. The food used to be amazing
Signed,
Sad :(

Fantastic! Love the food & the service is awesome. Nice family.

Fantastic. Just tried this place and really enjoyed it. Delicious noodle and curry dishes, and the owner was very thoughtful when taking my order. I will be back!

Best Kept Secret. I love this place and have been coming here for almost twenty years, I think. I really can't order Pad Thai anywhere else because it never measures up to what they make here. This is a family run business and understated in appearance, but everything I've tried on the menu (soups, spring rolls, stir fries, noodles) is consistently delicious. Oh - and reasonably priced! The wine selection is not so great, but who cares when the food is this good? Love you long time, Lhy Thai!

The Pad Thai was delicious!! So much yummy flavor, couldn't get enough!
I ordered for pick up and the people were so friendly and nice! Definitely recommend!!

Tom kha and penang curry. #02 stuffed chicken wings (4) (deep-fried stuffed chicken wings with minced chicken and sweet and sour sauce) 5/5 - better than what my expectation! Very crispy but a bit too oily. Most of the bones have been taken out already.
#03 tod mon (4) (deep-fried fish cakes with cucumber salad and peanuts) 3/5 - the fish cakes were too mushy. I wish there were more texture to it. I liked it better with the sweet and sour sauce.
#11 papaya salad 4.5/5 - the portion was smaller than others. Good flavours.
#14 tom kha gai 5/5 - I don't think this is my first time having this but now I'm in love this it! The lemongrass and the spices were not too strong and overpowering (which most of them usually do).
#27 Kang Karie Gai 4/5 - yellow chicken curry. This is bigger than the penang curry.
#30 penang goong 5/5 - red curry with coconut milk and peanut sauce. Right amount of peanut sauce. Some of us order another one for lunch tomorrow
#75 Phat Thai Gai (chicken pad thai) 4/5 - Smaller portion but there weren't anything much other than the noodles.
#81 Steamed Rice - They said they are serving mixed rice (with brown rice) but all of us could barely find any brown rice.
We waited 30 min before our dishes to come (we were the only table). After that, the dishes came out fine. Too bad they don't have the mango sticky rice. I want to have another Thai meal soon!
Michelle
The pad thai was dry with no flavor with peanuts dumped all over it when allergic. Will not be back
Zesty-limon
Meatless and pricey Thai food. Owners are truly nice people. Soup and Rice are great BUT food portion are out of reality. The flavour is not Thai. I mean perhaps the lack of meat makes it like that. I love Thai food and this experience was not a great one. Everything had little or close to no meat. The prices don't reflect the reality either. $10 avg for a small plate of veggies, since the meat is non existent. Come on feed your patrons properly, don't cheap out on meat...
Sarah
This restaurant came highly recommended by a coworker. Best Thai food I've had to date!! The owners are wonderful as well, made special considerations for my friend who is a vegetarian! Can't wait to go back next time I visit Vancouver!
Phat Gai
Food had no meat in it. They dumped peanuts all over the dishes after telling them I was allergic. Will not be back
Justin
Was recommended to come here by a coworker. The taste is average at best and on the pricey side. Portions are also very small considering the Edmonds area. We're not exactly in the west end area yet I'm eating at petite sizes. Good luck keeping cool in the summer time without AC!

Great Hole in the wall place. We stopped here after looking on urban spoon for a good Thai place in Burnaby on our way home to the White Rock area. It was awesome, service was great and couteous, food was fresh, every dish was awesome, we hope to return here again in the near future. Great spot, great food and service.

Need More Staff!. Not a bad place, but they are seriously understaffed. I waited for 15 minutes for a waiter to come over, and then waited 25 minutes for my food. And this was at 2:00 pm... long after the lunch rush.

Where are all your wait staff? They probably taking lunch in the back and forgetting that a customer like me is needing lunch too!

Wont come back!
Imonaplain
Average at best. This place BADLY needs a renovation. Everything is outdated, from the rickety exterior to the moldy floor planks inside to the cluttered workstation area out in the open by the cash register to the 1995 Food Safe certificates on the wall. Now I love "hole-in-the-wall" type operations, but this is a whole other level. Perhaps some find it a "charm" thing but I find it rather unsanitary, the restaurant always has a funky smell to it...

Service is friendly but very slow during their busy lunch periods, it may take up to 20mins to even get acknowledge at the door and another 15 to finally put in your order. Food is PACKED with MSG and the pad thai is not authentic at all - I had to ask for limes, to which they replied they don't carry limes!! You call yourself a thai restaurant but don't carry limes?! Unreal. Their lunch combos are good value but also loaded with MSG. I'm hoping another Thai restaurant opens up in the Burnaby South area soon so I can take my pad thai cravings somewhere more authentic and cleaner...

Good curry. We went here on Oct 23 and liked it enough to come back on the 24th. The green and red curry was really good, especially with steamed rice. My wife liked the papaya salad and the broccoli vegetable dish was good, as was the phat phuc. Good wine selection which was affordably priced. Overall a good experience.
AuntieHippo
The taste is not bad, but for the price they gave a lot of curry sauce and only a few pieces of meat.

Don't be fooled by appearance!. I've tried quite a few Thai places around the Vancouver area and I keep coming back to Lhy Thai as my favourite. The restaurant itself doesn't look great because it's so small and cluttered, but I always take mine to go so it doesn't bother me. Their #33 cashew chicken with veggies and rice is so good. They also have the best spring rolls. They're not too greasy and have the perfect texture. The only down side is that when you call for a pick up order during dinner, if they're really busy they just don't answer the phone which can be frustrating. I just keep calling until they answer though because I love this place!
Sir Eats A Lot
The best fried rice. I have yet to find a Thai restaurant this cheap that is this good. Best of Burnaby.

Keep up the great work!. I love places like this, affordable, no pretentiousness and authentic enough. Great food and had very friendly service everytime.

Not happy with experience. Went there for dinner and ended up waiting by the door for a good 15 minutes before ANYONE came up to us to at least acknowledge our presence!! After we got a seat, we ordered fairly quickly coz we were soo hungry at that point. But none the less, our food arrived after a good 20-25 minutes!!! To add insult to injury, a couple, who sat beside us literally 5 seconds before our food came, ordered their food and alas!!!! It comes before were even done eating!!!! And mind you, we ate really fast.... So yeah, were never going back there again!
Pork_ninjas
In for a treat!. Small place cluttered with stuff but the food makes up for it all.

the green curry with chicken is amazing and will need at least 2 bowls of rice to finish the sauce with.

thai ice teas are not my favourite here, I've seen it done better in the states and they add wayyyy too much ice.
Cool Andrew
I've been eating here a few times, I used to fall in love with this place cause they are cheap and quite tasty, but 2 days ago I went there, it seems they've just increase the price without even giving more portion, also the taste isnt so good either, I'm sorry LHY THAI, u hv lost my vote, maybe I'll come back once in a while, but with your current price x portion size x taste, maybe not in a few months
Matt Musselman
Disappointing. I'll start by saying their Tom Kha Gai has been perfect every time I've eaten there -- probably the best I've ever had. And if I was willing to dine on Tom Kha Gai soup alone, Lhy Thai would be terrific.

But the other dishes hadn't made much of an impression on me before like the soup had, and on our return visit today, I had to admit they were pretty forgettable. The Pad Thai was over sweet and overwhelmingly ketchupy tasting. Some people seem to like some things more the more sugary they are, and that's the best explanation I can come up with for why so many people rave about Lhy Thai's Pad Thai, but I just found it was like rice noodles drenched in Heinz. No subtle flavours of tamarind, lime, or chills.

Our other dish, squid with basil, was okay, but nothing to rave about.

Add to all this that the restaurant reeked of cigarette smoke, and our bowl of rice inexplicably smelled of mothballs, and I figure we can find a better Thai restaurant somewhere else nearby.
Sashacoco
Didn't like it. Best pad thai in the city? Are you for real? This is the worst pad thai I've ever had. Must have been a bad day in the kitchen. Even Days Thai is better and that's not saying much.
Roadie
Overrated. Food is mediocre, and portion is tiny. Doesn't taste very authentic Thai. Service is good though.
Kdawg
Best Thai in town!. Love this place. You may be fooled from the outside exterior but don't let it turn you away this is the place for the best pad thai in the city.
Geekmom
Fabulous hidden gem. I would not have guessed this place would be so awesome if I hadn't read the online reviews. Yes, the food really is that wonderful, the prices are fair and the service is fast, consistent and friendly. Edmonds St. is not exactly the first place you'd look to for some of the best Thai food in the lower mainland and yet that is exactly what we have found every time we eat here.
Thebeard
Is this place ever open?. Last time I tried to eat here there was a closed sign on the door and an old guy sleeping in the back...

I WAS BLIND BUT NOW I SEE.. Hard to believe I've been working & lunching in this area for over 10 years & never noticed or heard a word about this place until some friends mentioned it last week. After just 2 visits, it's already a big favourite. Other Thai food I've had in this same price range just doesn't compare. GREATNESS. The fact that I could've been eating here all that time is actually making me kind of upset right now.
MLT
Great lunch for good value. We have been eating here weekly for the last year and have never had a bad meal. Staff is great but get your reservations in by 11:30 because it is busy!
Sasha Coco
Blah no good!. What is all the fuss about this place? This is the second time I ordered food to go. I thought I would give them another chance. The chili pepper rice was greasy and small. The pad thai portion was really small for $10. It tasted pretty good but I can't get over the portion of the food! It is enough for one person. Go to Days Thai and you get twice the amount of good pad thai for $7.50 if you go before 5:00. If you go after 5:00 you still only pay around $10 and you get a TON of noodles! Overall the food at Lhy Thai is greasier then other thai places in Burnaby and once again, the portions are very small. Prices are high for the quality.

Thai food burnaby. The lhy thai is the best thai restaurant in burnaby. delicious food nicely prepared and presented -- prices so reasonable! good service, courteous staff, the overall appearance clean but casual, not fancy. we go back again and again.

Homey food, exellent coconut desserts!. I was pretty satisfied with my lunch combo. The chicken satay with the peanut sauce on it was really good. It's sweet, and it goes really well with the rice. The spring roll was crunchy, big and drizzled with sweet and sour sauce. The chicken curry is also good, but nothing special. There were more bamboo shoots in it more than chicken. I asked for spicy, but it didn't taste spicy at all. Maybe next time I'll ask for extra spicy.

REALLY yummy coconut ice cream with coconut meat and sauce!
Jordan Patrich
Delicious!. What a gem! I went to a Thai restaurant down the street earlier this week that was double the price of this place and no where NEAR as delicious.

Sure its nothing much to look at, but its also part of its charm. Wonderful service, I can't wait to go again!

A new favorite of mine.
RD
Great food @ very reasonable prices. A hidden gem worth the drive!!

There was a fairly large crowd in this Tuesday night, surprising to me considering the area looked abandoned. Clearly this is the locals’ go to for authentic Thai cuisine. Though after 7pm in Edmunds means everything is closed and chained up for the night. The only thing bumping on this block was the “Value Village”. It felt like I stepped back in time, back into the 70′s. And it was not purpose. This was because of the restaurant’s retro decor and the age of everything else in it. You could tell things here have had two or more lives, the place was old and had that tell tale smell. Pink and white stucco walls. Wooden floors worn down with scuffs in heavily trafficked areas. White parlour chairs chipping paint from age, to revel their mental underneath. Tables made from tiles including grout, each one was checkered differently with tiles of flowers, colours, and strips. Even the plates used were worn down with faded colours and scratches from all the utensils used before. Luckily my in

Me: *stomach growls* Sigh kfine. Me in my head: I gave in again. Whyyyyyyyyy South Burnaby - Lhy Thai. Supposedly the best thai place in the area. Oh boy. Expectations up. Stomach growl volume up. It was definitely one of those hole in the walls when we got there. Those places where you would think "ok its an old place, must mean the food is traditional and amazing!" Think again. The service was very friendly although the no one there spoke english very well - nor understood it. Me and a friend shared the following: Stuffed Chicken Wings- $7.95 At $8 you would think the portion would be just a TINY TINY bit larger. 4 little tiny itty bitty wings ,

Food: Only average. They serve great pad thai, but definitely need to work on their curry.
Service: Excellent. Warm and friendly staff from a family owned restaurant.
Price: We paid a total of $25 with tax for two people.
Recommended? I do have preference for other Thai restaurants, but they are located in Vancouver.
It’s fairly obvious that the restaurant knows what it’s doing by catering to the tastes of the local community… the flavours are a bit muted and not as distinct as you would expect to find in a Thai restaurant. That’s not to say the food is bad in any way… it’s actually pretty good but a little misleading for my taste buds.

I will say it certainly has hole-in-the-wall charm. Again, this sort of decor just happens over time and it just can’t be faked. I have no doubt that Lhy Thai is family owned and operated. You can tell just by looking at the place. While they could do for some new tables, all the dishes, utensils and nice little mismatched straw placemats were clean.

Today I went on a lunch hunt to Lhy Thai in Burnaby. I have to say, this place looks really ghetto from the outside.

Back in '94, when Lhy Thai opened it's doors, it was the go-to place in Burnaby for great Thai. Soon after that, Boua Thai arrived. With it's lower prices and heftier portions, Boua became our favorite lunch spot two, sometimes three times a week. It was that good. One day, in the middle of lunch, they were shut down. To this day it remains a mystery. I can't wait to hear, one day, that Boua has been reincarnated. They were, after all, devout Buddhists! One can only hope… After Boua closed we visited Lhy Thai several times only to be disappointed by bland fare and small portions. One time, I went on my own for a plate of Pad See Ew . It was the absolute worst plate of Thai food imaginable. Undercooked broccoli, overcooked beef, tough noodles and burnt garlic, to boot. The Tom Yum Gai was as watery as you could make it. I vowed never to return. Then, last week, Benzie and a buddy of his wanted to check out some Asian fare in Burnaby. They wanted to try Lhy Thai . I caved and wound up

We ordered our standard Phat Thai with chicken, and were pleasantly surprised - one thing about Phat / Pad Thai is that every restaurant does it differently. Some have freshly ground peanuts on top. Some have more tamarind pulp in the sauce. Some have dif
