Review Chez Meme Baguette Bistro - Burnaby

Daniel N
One of the many gems in the Burnaby Heights corridor. Small place but really friendly and excellent food. We came for breakfast and fell in love with their freshly baked to order baguettes. We also had their French toast brioche which was tasty. The fresh brewed coffee was good too. We love supporting the local diners and we would definitely be happy to dine here again!

My buddy and I split the chorizo and the mushroom and racelette?!? (2orders) First of all, the very simple baguette was so good! The potatoes were simple, but good... I loved the chorizo... the mushrooms were very fragrant, but I weirdly enough, the flavour didn’t jump out. Enjoyed it, if I lived in the area, I’d come back

Baguette is definitely unique and yummy. Everything else was mediocre. Friendly waiters. Seating is okay but not very spacious. Good place for a quick casual brunch. Free street parking. Famous for onion soup.

Definitely not what it used to be. Ordered the ratatouille baguette, but ended up with more of an empty bun and thin slices of vegetables. The complete plate photo is what the same dish used to look like back in August 2015. I asked the staff if Isabelle and her husband (the original couple) still worked at the restaurant, but apparently they sold the business a year and a half ago. They were the only reason I enjoyed going there, along with the quality of the food. I guess I won't be going back now anytime soon.

Best breakfast my nephew and I had in a while, amazing flavours and the staff is great too. Totally recommend this French bistro.

My Aunty treated my youngest son and I to breakfast. She had never been here and looked up at the reviews. She was right to come here. They have a limited menu, it's either baguettes, omlettes, and other items. My son and I enjoyed the Brioche French Toast so moorish and yum. Presented so nicely. You can get real "maple syrup" for an extra dollar. The lattes came in huge mugs! Everything was nice. My aunt enjoyed her mushroom omlette, with fried potatoes and a baguette. Very friendly owner serving us. Steady amount of people coming in. We weren't rushed as we were talking and eating.

It was our first time here. There were some good and bad reviews here. We always drove by this French restaurant. We finally gave it a try. There is a lot of street parking in Burnaby or East Hastings, so no worries about looking for a parking spot. The restaurant was small with two or three servers. The service was quick slow. We had been seated but we waited for a while before we got a menu. A server told us what was good here, so we ordered a dish of Espagnol and chive omelettes. Espagnol omelette was good or okay but the chive one was not. The coffee was just a cup of coffee. Nothing was special about it. We were kind of disappointing on the quality of food. We could have better brunch somewhere else. We just paid and left the restaurant after we finished the breakfast.

This place has the best French onion soup in Vancouver! This is one of my favorite places for brunch. A lot of options for omelette and sandwiches. I ordered French onion soup and ham and brie baguette; the soup was amazing and the baguette was good! The service is a bit slow since usually there is only one server and it gets busy on the weekends.

I've ordered from here twice now, and both times the food has been precisely what I needed to brighten my day.

A buddy of mine told me about Chez Meme Baguette Bistro, a small French bistro (more like a cafe), that specializes in baguette sandwiches. They’re a few doors down from The Valley Bakery. We dropped in on a Thursday for an early lunch (around 11:30am). Go early (or call for a reservation) otherwise you’ll have to wait; it’s popular and seating is limited. Three seats at the bar, three seats to people watch and 5-6 tables.

Restaurant closed 45mins early when we drove all the way from Richmond to try this restaurant for the first time. Couldn't even get take out. What a huge disappointment....

Chez Meme Bistro is a charming little French bistro that served breakfast and lunch.

We ordered the Ratatouille and Beef Short-Ribs baguettes. They were toasted to perfection. The filling was plenty in both baguettes and it did not fall out when you pick it up to eat it. We also ordered the daily soup (cream of mushroom).

Overall, the menu highlights the flavour of the ingredients, rather than a focus on unusual spice combinations - not fussy and pretentious.

We would recommend everyone to try this little gem!

My budget-conscious friend decided to try Chez Mémé Baguette Bistro despite usually ending up at Red Robin for one of their two-for-one burger specials. Chez Mémé has an extraordinary near-perfect score on Zomato, which usually scores tougher than Yelp. Overall items were not very salty, so if you're used to that you might even think they are not salty enough. Baguettes / come with your choice of fries, salad, or daily soup. Daily soup can come warm or piping hot and no matter the weather I suggest you get it hot because as you work through your meal it's going to get cold.

• 2 hour free street parking
• located along Hasting St (Burnaby side)
• short wait if you come before 0830
• attentive, fast & efficient servers
• food came in fast, same time as my friends; served hot
• I had the Espagnol which is an omelette with chorizo & bell peppers + coffee $15.50. It came with roasted potatoes, perfectly seasoned & crisp! The piece of baguette was I think freshly baked and was yummy!
• I had a bite of the Willy, the cheese was awesome!
• It's a good, quiet, nice place for brekkie
Get here early it's almost always got a wait list! I personally love their omelettes, the Espagnol and Forestiere are my favourites. Staff are friendly and welcoming, prices are also very reasonable. One of the best places for breakfast and lunch in the neighbourhood!

Super welcoming and friendly but service can be a bit slow due to how busy they are. Arrived at 12pm and it was a full house. We were told that it would be a 20 minute wait, but we ended up having to wait for only 10 minutes. I ordered the Forestiere omelette and my boyfriend got the Jarette sandwich. The food was amazing and really filling! I felt like I was back in Paris. Can't wait to come back and try more of the menu!

Chez Meme Baguette Bistro is located on Hastings Street in North Burnaby.

We are happy that we finally have lunch at this place. It would be nice if they open on the weekend. We got greeted when we walked in.

It has tiny place, but the atmosphere and services are great.

Services: 5/5
Foods: 5/5
Features: baguette, onion soup and French toast

Love it here! They have really good sandwiches and soups. It's a really tiny place so you will need to wait a bit. Service is amazing but slow as usually there is only one server.
Tammy Li
Service

- we were greeted promptly at the door
in french, waited for maybe 5 minutes for the table to clear up
- it took awhile for us to get our menu and to have our order taken but they were quite busy with one waitress and one bus girl

Ambiance

- Small and cozy restaurant

Food

- I ordered the bourguinon baguette sandwhich with fries and it was really tasty! Although I wish it would have a little bit more sauce in it.
- Friends ordered the willy, and omelette... i took a bite out of the willy and it was so cheesy! Loved it! I'll probably order that the next time I come back

Absolutely lovely little French bistro. They have the most bizarre hours of opening but the staff is always so friendly and great even though they are busy handling everyone, every single time that i come. Sandwiches are the best! Onion soup when cold is highly recommended as well.

I love love LOVE Chez Meme. Their sandwiches are AH.MAY.ZING. I've had the Cordon Bleu and Jambon Brie sandwiches... both are delicious!

I really wish they'd open later, or opened on weekends... I'd be there more often. Sucks that those who work Monday to Friday jobs have less opportunity to try this place.

Was here a couple years ago and don't remember much, but I will say I have fond memories of the super-tasty Jarret sandwich I had there. Must head back there again!

After seeing all the rave reviews, I decided to finally make a stop for lunch. Usually when I planned on coming for a bit i would be too late as they close earlier than most restaurants so please keep that in mind. I ordered the bourguignon and the nordique baguettes, maybe everyone hyped this place up too much or i had too high of hopes but it was mediocre. Don't get me wrong, still not a bad sandwich.. it was just simple and decent. If you want a mean sandwich maybe try meat and bread (the porchetta is phenomenal). I also tried the soup on the day and the french onion soup which was just too salty for me.

I've tried for the last few months to come to this place after hearing consistent raves about the food. A day off from work created the opportunity and the wait was worth it!!

The friendly "Bonjour" and "Merci" sets the stage for the wonderful Options on their menu. The staff are friendly and attentive.

I ordered the Bourgiugnon. The server made sure I was aware of the horseradish. I guess previous customers have commented their dislike for it (even though it says it right there in the menu). I assured her I wanted it. After tasting it, how would you NOT want it?? It was delicious. But I think the highlight was the French onion soup. I usually avoid this soup in other places because it's usually salty and almost like onion stew. But it was perfection. Generous on the cheer and bread to compliment the salt, and salted really just right. I'm definitely a fan. Generous portions left me forcing my last bites. I would have just left it but it did taste that good!

Perhaps my only beef (no pun intended) was the chairs. With no more seating left in the busy Cafe, I sat at the window counter on the high chairs; more "high" than chair let me tell you. I did get the chance to move to a table where the have relatively cheap plastic chairs. They are clean, but kind of flimsy.

All in all, I would suggest everyone try this place at least once. Total jewel of North Burnaby!!

Family owned French Bistro/ Restaurant, a real gem for those who enjoy the French way of life.

The baguettes are authentic and the variety of different types of filling served there all have their distinct feel.

My personal favorites are the Boeuf Bourginion and the Jared D'Agneau.

Moreover if you have a sweet tooth, be sure to check their desserts they are home made and hard to resist, I have a soft spot for the Crème Brulée and the Forestière

Overall must go place to eat, I would go there everyday for lunch if I had the opportunity, the option to take-out the baguettes to eat as a grab-n-go sandwich is always there for those on the run

Came to this place with a friend for brunch/lunch. I've had this place on my list of places to check out for awhile and finally had the chance to go. It's a small place but very welcoming. I ordered breakfast type food and it was delicious. True to its name, every single dish comes with a baguette. Overall I had a good experience here. The baguette sandwiches looked amazing. I'll definitely have to try those next time!

Très bon Ross et Isabel!! Chez Meme is exactly what everyone raves about. A simple tiny bistro, simple but great food with French influences and a friendly greetings in French . . . all on Hastings Street in Burnaby in the Heights District. I had the Bourguignon . . . rich braised beef on the wonderful baguette with just enough horseradish to get your attention and I opted to have the soup, which was a nice butternut squash. I got there at 11:30AM and by noon they were turning people away, so get there early or make a reservation. Will definitely return!

Chez Meme Baguette Bistro is a popular eatery in North Burnaby. True to their name, many of their dishes are accompanied by the tastiest baguettes in the city.

The perfect way to start the day is with a Hot Chocolate ($3.50) and this version, topped with whipped cream, is sure to warm you up.

The French Toast Brioche ($9.95) served with sliced fresh strawberries and more of that amazing whipped cream.

I mentioned baguettes earlier… you can’t really see it here but the Baguette Willy ($9.95) is served with a crisp baguette that’s open-faced and topped with scrambled eggs, black forest ham, creamy cheese sauce and a plentiful helping of sautéed potatoes.

If you like baguettes, you’ll love this spot.

The jambon et brie baguette is amazing. I can only describe it as the most perfect sandwich I've ever had.

The staff are genuinely nice and seem to love what they do. Tip: they're open one Saturday a month and it's most definitely worth the wait for a table.

Every once and a while a gem pops up in Vancouver. This one for me is it. It's even hard to describe how good this place is. If you want to experience Paris lunch, try there soup and sandwich combos. The service is super friendly and there prices are ridiculous. I would pay double for there food

The food is tasty and the service is excellent. A delighted place for lunch. Had a smoked-salmon sandwich with salad. Sandwich was a bit salty for me but the ingredient was fresh. One of the best salad I have had. Coffee was also great. Will definitely go back.

This has got to be one of the most charming cafes in North Burnaby. The husband works the kitchen, while the wife is out front, greeting every guest with a pleasant "bonjour." The baguette sandwiches are where it's at, but breakfast is pretty stellar too.

WARNING closed on Sunday's!!! Argh!

Believe the Hype. This place has truly exceptional food quality. The baguettes are as close to perfect as I can imagine, the french toast is simply exquisite and the overall attention to detail is amazing. You simply have to try it.

I also like the fact that this place is not realying on any pretention to win people over. (especially rare for french cuisine) Just straight up, good food.

Chicken Caesar Baguette and French Onion Soup. Amazing!

Bread is unreal...I can't recall where I've had a similar tasting bread. Ingredients are all fresh, and the owners are nice. Great spot.

Simplement parfait!. After passing Chez Meme so many times on the busride up to school, I FINALLY got to try it! To my surprise, I was greeted in the french the moment I walked in. The whole time I was there I noticed all the employees speaking french(even if it was just simple expressions to customers). It was refreshing to go to a French cafe where French is actually spoken!! I had the Brioche French Toast and wow c'était DELICIEUX! The dish consisted of 3 beautiful(good-sized) slices of brioche french toast topped with 3 dollops of whipcream and fresh strawberries(other options of banana slices or caramelized apple-raisins) . Perfect french toast, and nicely presented too. :) Also, for the amazing price of 2.75(or something around that) you can get a great quality latte served in a huge mug. It was an overall great experience and I highly recommend Chez Meme! Merci beaucoup Chez Meme! Tous les choses étaient géniale, je retournerai! :)

It was okay only. 95% is a bit higher than it deserves but it was okay so I can't really vote that I don't like or like. If you are in the neighborhood it's okay to stop by but not worth making a special trip here.

Great Food and Service. Cute little French bistro with great food and nice owners. Go early for lunch as it fills up fast but it's worth the visit. The owners are very pleasant and do a really nice job of taking care of their customers.

Food is amazing with a selection of breakfast dishes and sandwiches served on yummy crusty baguettes. My favorite is the Beef Bourginon Baguette (but everything on the menu is really good) and they come with choice of soup, salad or frites for around $10.95. The soups are homemade.

Great value and service. I keep going back.

Finally Good sammiches. I have fineally found a good sammich place. I love it..
Everything is good try it all I am well on my way..
Yet to have a dissapointment there...

Absolutely love it here! Th.... Absolutely love it here!
The food is amazing and Isabelle
Is a great host
She is always pleasant but doesn't take any crap from anyone, love it!
It's one of the few places in vancity where I can confidently tell some one who hasn't been there before to go ahead and try anything on the menu
They will be very impressed and leave wondering what to order next time

I frequent this place at least once a week, I have to stop myself from going more. I'm addicted! Simply the best food in the neighbourhood, delicious baguettes and divine soup. I am working my way through the menu and loving every minute of it!!! highest recommendation!!

Today's lunch. Very good lunch, simple, just perfect. Nice simple decor. Very efficient and friendly service.

The food is amazing, but expect to wait in line as often there are long line ups. It would be great if this place had longer hours, I believe they are only open in the afternoon.

Delicious food! I came here with a larger party for my friend's and my birthday. Service was wonderful, the food was delicious, we didn't have to wait long and the atmosphere is lovely. I definitely want to come back to try their breakfast!
Jaci Benson
A great, small diner. Nice service and a great portion sizes for the price. I enjoyed it and will definitely be coming back!
Brooklyn
Yum!. My favourite breakfast restaurant. Isabelle is wonderful - she will remember your order if you go a few times and order the same thing, and when it's not too busy she's great to talk with.

I can't say enough good things about the food. Even the coffee is the best I've had at a breakfast place. For breakfast, try the baguette willy (scrambled eggs and ham on toasted fresh baguette with cheese sauce) for a unique treat. For lunch, the ratatouille sandwich (sliced vegetables like eggplant, zucchini, and tomato, with goat cheese, on baguette) will never disappoint.

Cute place good food. It's pretty hard to notice this place if you don't live in the Burnaby Heights area and it's easily overlooked but boy is it popular anyways! The food here is great. It's a quaint little French-Canadian mom and pop bistro. Breakfast food is great and the sandwhiches taste good too.
I_heart_food
Great food. This place makes great food. Very delicious sandwiches, and a great breakfast. Be prepared to wait though. It is a small restaurant with only one server, and there is often a line up.
Bridgecityslicker
Love it! Excellent food, service, and value. The owner who served us is really lovely. I'd say this place is a real gem. Very nice wine and beer list- with low markups. I plan to return often.

So good!. This place has amazing soup and sandwiches. I'm not a soup person, but every time I've gone here I've really enjoyed their soup of the day. It is a tiny place, so there is often a lineup. They will take your phone number and call you when your table is ready so you can walk around the heights instead of waiting there. I just wish they were open evenings and weekends! I rarely get to go here because of their restricted hours, but I think that's an artifact of it being a family run business.

Quality food, coffee & services.. Having been to the restaurant many times and shared widely with friends & locals I endorse the establishment 100%. Coming from the catering industry, I appreciate the atmosphere, the comfy nature of the eatery. It is not for rushed individuals.
It is a local hidden gem, including the staff who give unqualified and dedicated attention to French detail.

Try this special place, the menu is well designed and exceptionally tasty. [well priced also]

My only hope is that one day more local Hastings street eateries will offer singular service, hygene, and delightful staff who speak and love France and all that that implies.

I would love to invest in such a pleasant larger establishment. Perhaps with an expanded wine list ?

Like their French Onion Soup!. Due to a relatively restricted opening hours (open only on weekdays and every other Saturdays for lunch), it is not often that we get to try this place.

We shared a Bourguignon Sandwich and we added 3 dollars more to get the French Onion Soup with it. The sandwich was packed with beef. It was served nice and hot. We did find that they put too much horseradish for our liking. At one point we couldn't even eat it anymore - the taste was just very strong. The winner here we both agree was the French Onion Soup - it had a good amount of cheese on top. Inside there were plenty of onions and bread. Some might find it a little too salty.

We also ordered the Nordique sandwich along with the daily soup which was the Butternut Squash and Bell Peppers soup. We both enjoyed the taste of the Bourguignon more than the Nordique. There was not enough cream cheese in it. The huge slices of cucumbers overwhelmed the whole sandwich.

Extremely long wait for food (approx. 30 mins) and for ordering. The waitress kindly warned us about the wait though when we placed the order. When we arrived at about 11:30, there were still a few empty tables and by 12:30 all the tables were full.

It is worth a try!
Sheila
Really, really good. Have been for lunch only twice, sadly. I used to work in the 'hood and this was my fave lunch spot. The food is reallllly good, the portions are generous, and the service is excellent. The only downside is how popular it is, and that it isn't open for dinner.

Setting the record straight. First of all i am a regular customer at Chez Meme so I know first hand how their system works.. they do not take traditional reservations because the place is very small and they don't want tables sitting empty waiting for people to show up for a reservation... However many people love the restaurant soo much they are prepared to wait for a table as from 11 to 2:30 the place is packed.. So they will take your name and cell number and if you want to wander the shops they will call you back and say.. We'll have a table for you in a few minutes.. That doesn't Mean if a table comes open and you have been there waiting for a couple minutes you can sit down and demand to be served.. Lol they play no favorites even for regulars.. I know.. As I've waited many times my self.. The food is amazing. The people are great.. Go enjoy.. Eat and be merry.

A victim of their own success!. A victim of their own success
We waited for a Saturday lunch opening (only every second Sat of the month) and saw there were two empty tables inside. The server- the only one - (I assume the owner) was so busy answering the phone, making coffee, taking orders and running around - ignored us for five minutes. She then told us that there are 25 tables ahead of us and it'll take it to their closing time @ 2 o'clock. The tone of her voice was so arrogant and disrespect to us; in a way she was telling us "OFF"! We pointed to the two empty tables; no one was waiting inside or outside the cafe, and said what about the two tables? The server was very angry and said don't you dare to tell me what to do!!!!!! At that point we just left the place and shake our head. Good food is important but people skill and good service are what customers coming back. A friendly advice to the owner - brush up your people skill before you open the door tomorrow!

A MUST TRY. The food is excellent here! Even my BF who doesn't really enjoy sandwiches enjoyed the beef and the shrimp baguettes here! Fresh ingredients, home made soups and killer skinny fries. The only downside is thar they close so early, by 3pm during the week and I think they are closed most weekends.
Tara D
Absolutely delicious! C'est magnifique!! Can't wait to come back and will definitely be recommending to EVERYONE!

Oui Oui!. Finally got off class earlier enough to get to Chez Meme with my girlfriend before it closed...and was it ever worth it! Great food and you don't have to travel to some dingy hipster restaurant in Kits to get it! The soup of the day was deliscious (although I would really like to try the French onion soup as well!) and both the baguettes we had were fantastic. From what I saw other customers eating, the breakfast menu looked quite good too. If you're looking for a great place to get some decently priced french style food...this is where it's at!

Jambon brie!. Rich, creamy, delicious. When i eat the jambon brie i feel like im taking my time and savoring every bite. Then when it's all gone i look at the time then im surprised how fast ive eaten it! Each bite is blissful. I usually pair it with soup and the soup of the day is always different and fresh. Also the French owner/server is lovely. My only qualm Is that it is small and can get pretty busy. Also, it's only open 1 saturday per week and otherwise closed on weekends. I need more chez meme!
John
The food was amazing and the service superb. Great, great value for the quality and quantity received.
Maya Dimapilis
Favorite Spot in North Burnaby. I was so excited when Chez Meme came to our neighbourhood. It's a great addition. The owners are warm and friendly and the food is always good.
Una
Rude woman staffing front door, and while the food may be great, absurdly busy with no option of reservations. Boo.
Secret Diner
Absolutely the best food and service, we tried the warmed banana brioche, jambon and Brie with warmed pear and the espagnol omelette.all were perfectly prepared! great food we will all definatly be back! A hidden treasure!!!

Simply wonderful food. My wife and I have eaten at Chez Meme several times and have always left happy. Everything is tasty. The omelettes are not your run-of-the-mill dried-out North American omelettes. They are moist and flavourful. However, the piece de resistance is the brioche French toast. It is absolutely to die for! My only complaint is the calorie count, but then this is French cuisine, n'est-ce pas?

I went to Chez Meme Baguette Bistro with my Mother after being here once a few months ago with my friend. I remember really liking one of the baguettes and thought my Mother would really enjoy it too. It took months to come back here again due to the very inconvenient hours. I also knew that I had to come extremely early as going later would mean there would be a line up. It took a while to be able to come here again but it is so worth it!
Justamorsel
This bistro let me down. I had high expectations after hearing all the great things. Maybe I had come on an off day. The portion of the food is great but balancing some of the flavours would have improved some of the dishes immensely

Eventually, I will work my way through the menu. So far, my favorite is the Jarret (Red wine braised lamb with lettuce, roasted garlic jam, and grainy Dijon served on a baguette). I’ve always liked lots of meat in my sandwich and combines red wine and garlic, items that I love. The texture of the meat contrasted with the bread has a lot of textures going on in my mouth, in a good way of course.

Here is one side of the menu, with all their delicious baguettes! They are well known for the baguettes, so it was obvious what my choice was.

My first love here is the coffee. Sure the French aren’t really known for good coffee, but their mocha is my favourite cup, anywhere. When I hear the word “mocha” – I think of a perfect confluence of coffee and chocolate, creating something different, but oh so good. Most mochas in Vancouver use very dark chocolate that really amps up the bitterness of the drink. I was living with Caffe Artigiano’s until I tried Chez Mémé’s. It is everything I imagine a mocha is – it tastes like coffee ice cream, in hot form. And it’s also kinda massive. A big cup of happiness.

I’ll definitely be back here to try a lunch sandwich next time and be a little more adventurous with my dining pick. It’s a pretty busy place for a small shop so perhaps reservations are in order if you are to pay this place a visit. If not, trust me, it’s worth the wait!

After the hearty soup and the humongous cup of latte AND half of that shortrib sandwich, my stomach was pushed to its limit and I had to take half of it home (even though i knew that it just wouldn’t taste as great when its not freshly made)
Moyen Chow
The Bourguignon (like the Jarret and Snitzel) sandwich is made from ingredients that would take me too long to make at home. The sandwiches from Chez Meme are creations made with care and as result very delicious.
Fiopo
The sandwiches were deceiving large and the sides were substantially portioned. Although they were not anything close to amazing-tasting, the components were tasty enough for my wife and I to eat bite after bite until everything on our plates was cleared without either one of us feeling disgusted about any component of our dishes. The prices were not half-bad either. They were reasonable and could even be considered to represent value when portion sizes are taken into consideration.
Ohnaturelle
Still, it was a well-executed breakfast, with a good balance of flavours. Nothing was too salty. I love all the ingredients in this omelet (ham, onion, potatoes…what’s not to love?) so I enjoyed it (well, the bits she le

The baguette is absolutely wonderful - crispy on the outside and light as air on the inside and it holds the fillings like no other. I would buy this bread on its own. The beef is the MOST TENDER beef in a sandwich I've ever had. A hint of the wine sauce, a bit of onions for a change and a hit of horseradish to may you cry (and it will - I cried twice). Not recommended for those sensitive to that kind of spice! It's a meaty delight so I would recommend you go with the side salad for a lighter counterpoint although their fries also looked crispy delicious. I chose to sub for the onion soup since it looked so enticing on a few other tables and I'm glad I did. It may have been an extra $3 but it was well worth it - TONS upon TONS of layers of cheese, savory savory savory broth, soft browned onions with rich onion flavor in the soup. Just the best onion soup I've ever had as the flavors were balanced so well and it doesn't fall victim to the curse of oversalting. C'est tres bon!

It is a great place for lunch but not without its flaws – namely a long wait especially during peak hours...

Each sandwich comes split into two large pieces, so they are perfect for sharing. The first one we got was the jambon brie baguette ($9.25). I was expecting this sandwich to be pretty standard, but it turned out to be my favourite part of the meal. The baguette had a crunchy exterior, but was fresh and soft inside. This was the perfect bread for sandwiches. Inside the sandwich was filled with thick, melty, slabs of brie cheese and thinly sliced black forest ham. Ham and brie is such a classic co

In addition to their AMAZING french onion soup, this local mom and pop shop located in Burnaby will surely blow your mind when you taste their baguette sandwiches. Meta Knight and I both love their short rib baguette called "Bourguignon".

This Schnitzel baguette was only $8.75 but I upgraded to their famous french onion soup for three dollars. Word of advice. Upgrade to the french onion soup or else you might regret it.

The Onion Soup was sinfully delicious!! The broth was incredibly flavourful and loaded with onions, while the stringy melted Emmental cheese wrapped it all into a little present waiting to be unwrapped. :P Needless to say, this is totally worth the extra 3 bucks.

Overall, I recommend checking out Chez Meme Baguette Bistro. The service is excellent, and the food is solid french food.

This is a hidden gem in the Hastings Heights area. I’ve been dining quite a few times in the area lately and this had always been on my wishlist but it’s never open on weekends. So my girlfriend and I came during the Easter long weekend to give this place a review. We like to sleep in, so we didn’t get there till 1pm. But it was pretty busy with people lining up, but not out-of-the-door line ups. The Baguette Bistro has its own character, it’s really a hole-in-the-wall restaurant (as you can see in the picture). However, the inside was very Bistro-like. We left the waiter my phone number and decided to go walk over to the dollar store next store and they have this service of calling you once your table is ready. I also think they do reservations, but don’t quote me on it.

Chez Meme has been on my list of places to try for quite a while but I haven’t found myself in the North Burnaby area for ages. As it turns out, we happened to be in the neighbourhood looking for some eats and wound up parking right in front of Chez Meme.

I’ve finally had a chance to check out this place in North Burnaby. They are only open for lunch on weekdays, but they serve a great baguette. Family owned by Ross and Isabelle, stepping into Chez Meme is like stepping into a bistro in France. From the looks on the inside, they cater to many different tastes and wants. There is always a bit of a wait, but it’s fine if you aren’t in a rush. We waited about 10-15 minutes and we were seated promptly. My dining partner today was Benson, and he ordered the Cordon Bleu (Black forest ham, chicken, Emmenthal and Dijon Mustard – $9.25). All baguette sandwiches come with your choice of soup, green salad or fries. He went with the fries, which were prepared fresh and cooked very well. I went with the Snitzel (Pork loin, lemon caper mayo, tomatoes, lettuce and grainy Dijon – $8.75). I loved the crisp exterior of the baguette and the soft, chewy bread in the middle – this is definitely how baguettes should always be. The pork loin was good but it i

The food and service at this restaurant honour the modest traditions of the bistro and I can’t really ask for much else. Every neighbourhood deserves a place like this.

The interior was quite yellow and decorated with some interesting paintings and items.

Overall, consistent slow service, but the food is pretty good…except the part with the wilted greens.

A few weeks ago, I took my parents to Chez Meme for lunch for the very first time. I know their French Onion Soups are amazing, and there sandwiches are just the best, having been there last year.
Since these are their two most solid items, I decided to get the French Onion Soup and the Jambon sandwich. I like the little extra mustard they give you on the side, and the crusty bread is perfect to soak up the melting brie. I had heard that they were now opening for dinner (Tues-Sat) so we made plans for a revisit.

The Bourguignon Baguette definitely the item to order here. The braised beef was very tender and flavorful. It was fixed with some onions and a nice layer of dijon mustard. The baguette was soft, and it was really easy to bit into the sandwich. It was o

Chez Mémé Baguette Bistro is a small and hugely popular French restaurant in North Burnaby. On my first visit, this past Monday, I managed to snag the last table. I walked past on Thursday around 1:30…not a seat to be had, people waiting. On Friday I made a reservation for 11:30. Again, full house. One reason for this venue's popularity is the friendliness of the owner/server, Isabelle. Each guest is greeted with a happy " Bonjour! " Even with an over-flowing lunch service her temperment never wavers, creating a homey, warm vibe. Another reason is this concise and well-planned menu. Along with the soup, salads, sandwiches and "Plats", they also do an amazing breakfast, I'm told. Great food, a fine selection of beer and wine…life is good! Unfortunately, while at work, we must abide by a strict no-tolerance policy when it come to alcohol. Too bad, that. A nice Pinot would've worked perfectly here. On my " scouting-mission " visit, I went with the Snitzel . A very, very solid sandwi

All in all, I was reasonably pleased with Chez Meme Baguette Bistro.
My Secret Eden
We arrived around 10:00am, and this place was already packed. The waitress asked if we would mind the "window bar" seats, we happily accepted since it means we don't have to wait.

When Victoria first introduced me to Chez Meme Baguette Bistro, she described to me a fantastic sandwich place that served some of the tastiest French-style sandwiches she’d had…at least on this side of the Atlantic. :) I was tempted to join her for lunch

Chez Meme concept is simple - French bistro food in the form of omelettes, baguette sandwiches, and other offerings like a duck confit and brioche french toast.

A small comment in Sherman's blog about a restaurant in North Burnaby reminded me it was a place I should go. However, due to its limited hours, I had a somewhat hard time doing so... Until now!

Chez Meme Baguette Bistro on Hastings in Burnaby is a small, charming, neighbourhood restaurant that serves simply prepared French food with friendly hospitality. The menu is small, but filled with so many good looking items it was hard to narrow down what we wanted. Tre ordered the Sarladaise : a luxurious sounding duck confit omelette served with sauteed potatoes, onions and a fresh baguette. I had the French toast brioche : served with strawberries, caramelized apples, whip cream and a side of real maple syrup for an extra $1.75. (Above: French Toast Brioche topped with fresh strawberries and whipped cream.) Our breakfasts were fantastic. Tre's duck confit classic French omelet was fluffy and moist, the duck tender and gently seasoned. The baguette was nicely toasted while still slightly soft. My French toast brioche was dope. The pieces of thick, pillowy brioche had just a light hint of egg. The strawberries were lightly sweetened and tasted fresh even tho

I was greeted by the French lady with a bonjour. My French is limited and I wanted to respond back with a Wonder Years quote stating "Voulais vous du beurre". The sandwiches ($8-$10) are served on a nice fresh baguette, with a massive plate of fries and all deserve writing a letter home about. I have tried the beef bourguignon, shrimp cocktail and Nordique sandwiches all of which are very impressive. The breakfasts look incredible but I have always elected to go for the sandwiches. The brioche french toast looks mind blowing and will be the next thing I order. If you want something to really blow your mind try the Nicoise (tuna) salad which is fantastic. The salad is served with boiled eggs, tomato and lightly seared tuna (I believe tuna should only be served seared or raw).
