Review Thai Garden Restaurant - Bedford

Andrew Larter
This is one of the best Thai places in the HRM. The food is exactly what you would expect and it is always delicious. The staff is very kind and helpful when trying to make a choice from their menu. Unlike other Thai place in the area, they make your food fresh unlike other places that literally pour the food out of a premixed bag. The veggies are always just right and the sauces are delicious. Because their food is made fresh to order they know exactly what is in it and can remove, add, and substitute items for any reason, which I have never been charged for unlike at other Thai places in the area. Oh, and the owner is always on site. She is the sweetest person, too.

We ordered take out for a group get-together so had a chance to try a variety of dishes. Unfortunately, none were edible and the food was soggy and disgusting. Everything from the texture, smell and appearance was terrible, as someone described the chicken tasted like old marshmallows. We tried the pad thai, cashew chicken, chef's special, beef and broccoli, various rice, chop soy and some others, all were quite terrible and quickly found their way to the green bin. Most disappointing of all is that the price was quite comparable to other good Thai options in the area. This was a good lesson learned and we would never attempt eating there again.

The Pad Thai was mediocre, but the service was great. My family went in on Thanksgiving and were the only customers in the restaurant. The server, whom I assume was also the owner, force fed my son rice. She promised him a treat if he cleaned his plate, but it was still a little weird. He may never eat rice again.

Order several items and was extremely disappointed. Ordered rice, pad Thai and other popular dishes. I don't know how this place got a 4.2 star rating, a one star rating is generous. Save your money and disappointment and just order from Chaba Thai.

It is not a Thai restaurant at all, and this was especially reiterated not just by our experience with the very Canadian-Chinese tasting food (with little or no Thai ingredients), but also by the sloppy and non-considered elements (or lack thereof) to make what constitutes a Thai restaurant (authentic or not). For example, once we sat down at our table, the table card announcing their daily special still had their former business name on it (Jade Garden); a dead give-away. We should have known just by that that this was not going to be authentic, however, we wanted to give it a chance. Unfortunately, the whole experience was wrong from the get-go. We were greeted by our unkept looking waitress with the question of "How can I help you?" I answered "Um...we're here to eat?" (shouldn't that have been obvious?). Secondly, once we made our decision to order, it was after the fact that the waitress announced they had only about 1/3 of the menu available (another dead giveaway) - which revealed to me that there is obviously little demand for their Thai food, making them exactly what I suspected; a Chinese restaurant covering up as Thai restaurant in order to stay competitive, as Thai is so popular right now.. Most importantly, the food SUCKED. Not only was it clearly NOT Thai food, but very poor Chinese food, I will add. My sister & brother and law ordered Pad Thai (which was "okay"), and also a Thai red curry, which was soupy, flat and predominated by the overwhelming flavor of tinny, canned bamboo shoots. I ordered what was called the "Chef's special" (I should have known better - this is always something marketed in a Chinese restaurant), which boasted a stir fry that sounded good by description. The waitress assured me it was their most popular non-curry dish, and when it arrived, it was nothing more then a generic stir fry consisting of a plate of bland, steamed vegetables (nothing exotic) with what tasted like store-bought oyster sauce dumped on it. The vegetables were swimming in the nondescript sauce, with no other flavours one would expect in a Thai dish (garlic, nampla, palm sugar, basil, ginger, lime, lemongrass, etc, etc.) - not a trace! The chicken was rubbery. It wasn't even a good Chinese dish by my standards. If I wanted Chinese, I would have gone to Szechuan Kitchen in the Hammond Centre up the street. All of us had upset stomachs after we ate there as well.... I don't even want to envision the sanitary state of the kitchen.... Please, if you want real Thai food, don't go here. There are many other places in Bedford now that will give you not only the real thing, but much better service and quality (Thai Ivory Palace, Chabaa, etc.). The only reason we went to "Thai" Garden, is it was recommended by a trusted friend. Now I'm starting to think the only Thai food this person ever had before eating here and recommending it was a President's Choice frozen tv dinner (which I am convinced would taste better).... The final verdict - (It may sound mean of me, but here it is): Thai Garden is a second-rate Canadian Chinese restaurant that happens to stock coconut milk in its kitchen. I guess it's their last attempt in redefining their fledgling establishment that is tucked away in a non-visible corner of a Upper- Bedford plaza.

This is a fantastic place for Asian cuisine. Pad Thai is fabulous as is all that we have tried. Staff are always extremely pleasant and helpful. We order from here once every month.

Great food whether you like Thai, or the Chinese options on the menu. Have been here regularly. Enjoy the Pad Thai, Drunken Noodles, egg rolls, pad prik curry.
