Review Seoul Country Korean Restaurant - Banff

Ordered takeaway Seolleongtang (ox bone soup). Wondering is the portion same as eating there? It's half-filled on the given bowl, and side dishes are very little too, should have ordered 1 more side... Nonetheless, taste was ok - the essence of the bone was well extracted into the soup. If you don't compare it to those in Korea, should be ok to try.

I came here before and the food was excellent, I went on Google to find the place again and saw it only had 3.5 stars.. that’s total BS! The food is amazing as usual the service is very kind and polite and the prices are great. Come eat here you’ll love it. :)

I really think this restaurant is underrated. Great service, excellent food. Even your banchan(s) taste wonderful! Honestly did not expect much of Asian food in Banff just because it is harder to get all kinds of the right ingredients but surprisingly this was one of the best Korean food I have ever had! Very well done chef!!! A little but pricey but understandable since it is in the tourist destination. Thank you for a lovely dinner. Highly recommend and will def be back! ❤️

Tasty food, first real Korean meal, so a bit more guidance would have been appreciated with regards to the side plates. The waiter helped to cook up the meat and vegetables. Really fast service and food considering we cooked it fresh. Will definitely make a point to visit again.

A nice place that serves delicious Korean food - worth a try, especially if you are craving for some Asian food

Always the hunger buster! We always come here after a long days walk. Assorted seafood hotpot is the best seller.korean servers seems to very well know how to best serve its customers. Happy customer here. My family love it.

suddenly we’re looking for some asian food where in banff. then we’re choosing this korean restaurant. the food was fine, but there were some tough and fishy meats. i think the service must be improved. overall, not bad.

One of the worst customer services that I have experienced . The food was ok but I won’t give a good review as I faced a racist waiter.

A group of friends and I visited Banff for a day. We decided to have some Korean foods.

The waiter was a bit rude to us when we ordered the foods. No smile what so ever. I didn’t realize that he actually treated differently to the customer next to our table until I overheard the conversation and saw that he actually smiled nicely. It happened that customer is a Caucasian.

I believed that waiter is a Korean from his English accent. Does he have to treat us differently who are not Caucasian? He should remember this is Canada not South Korea.

Overall the food was good not super authentic. We get it cause we are in the middle of mountains.Very good service even super busy at supper time still got seat and food very fast!! Seem a bit pricey but everything pricey here can't complain.

Wouldn't recommend this place. If you're looking for authentic Korean this place is not it. Ordered a bibimbap and spicy beef soup. Both were just meh. I ordered the non hot stone bowl bibimbap but didn't think that it will come out cold. Gochujang sauce is bland. The banchan are just alright. Spicy beef soup also bland. The taste and punch that is familiar with Korean food was just not there. Overall disappointing experience. Service was just okay. A little bit in the pricey side as well but that seems to be the norm being in Banff. Wouldn't go back.

Worst Korean restaurant!!

Don't waste your time here. Don't go here. Service is non existent, food is terrible and very small portion. This place is terrible. Worst Korean restaurant ever!
Ordered the bibimbap, had no clue that they serve it cold. I've been to a lot of Korean restaurants usually bibimbap is hot stone bowl not cold and It didn't say on the menu that it was serve cold and I was told i had to pay $2 more to get it hot, Seriously ?? The waiter needs to be trained properly. Service is so terrible no wonder there's barely any one that eats here. Inform ur customers that a dish will be serve frozen cold and tell them if they want it hot! This is the worst Korean restaurant ever!

Food portions smaller than other Korean restaurants. Service was also non existent had to ask for service. This place used to be really good a few years ago. Quality of service and food has definately fallen since. Avoid. Also tips are already included so you cant tip based on service

One of the worst Korean places I have ever ate. Their service is horrible, and they seem to have forgotten about our table of 10. The food portion was super small, we ordered 2 jap chae's but one plate was significantly smaller then the other .. And we are paying $22 a plate. Just doesn't seem fair. Secondly everything is an extra cost, they wanted to charge us extra $5 for more onions. They also ran out of bean sprouts which is part of their 4 main side dishes that come with the meal. I don't expect much from restaurants but this experience at this restaurant overall was very poor.

Service? Non existent. Do NOT even think of going here unless there's no other place at Banff serving food. I have to ask for water twice. Side dishes? You have to beg to get if you're not speaking the language.

Was extremely disappointed with the service. We had a party of 15 people and the waiters were all rude, asked for take out containers said no, asked for knives to cut our meat response again was NO, no reason just No... when it was time to settle the bill the manager demanded nearly a 25% tip, when the person who was paying for the entire bill said that I will leave a tip but not that much because, we were not happy with the rudeness of the servers. At that point the manager called this person cheap and that was the final straw settled the bill, meanwhile the bus boy came out with is rolling cart to clear the tables when we were still all sitting at the table, and rammed is cart into the first table which I thought was an accident until he did it again to the second table which then we then realized he just being aggressively rude and we made our feelings clear to this person that his actions were absolutely unprofessional and that we would not return. Have never seen this kind of service anywhere just brutal treatment.

A traditional place representing south Korean culture. Please reserve early if your coming in as a large group (10+) as it can get busy due to the fact that tour groups eat here. The space is big, but it cannot move tables since it is connected to a gas line, but there are tables for 10.

I highly recommend the item #5 spicy squid stir fry (o-jing-uh bok-keum). It has the right portion size, seasoning, adequate spiciness, and the squid is cooked right (not rubbery).

We wanted to try something different, so we went for the item #30 spicy seafood hotpot (hae-mul jun-gol). It was really good, right amount of servings (crab claws, shrimps, scallops, and mussels) served with my favorite type of noodles (udon noodles).

The service was friendly and accommodating to our needs for more side dishes and clean up of the tables. On a side note, this was the only Korean restaurant I have been where it served pickled spinach. I would recommend to give this a try when your in Banff.

The soup wasn't good. We ordered soups but taste wasn't good. The manu said have beef slices in the soup but can barely find them. Should try the BBQ instead of soup.

A must. Whenever my husband and I visit, we have to eat at Seoul Country. Always satisfying and a great experience. It gets busy here frequently especially at dinner and some visits we have had to wait a little. It's worth it!

Racist restaraunt. I am an average white female who loves Korean food. The spices the textures the people, everything about it. I visited this restaraunt with my philipino partner in crime for dinner, did i add we are from calgary? We both love food of all kinds, and at one point we were seated and my friend mentioned that while we were waiting for our food, every single other table of food was served before us who had arrived after us. It took 20 mins for our order to arrive and a table of twenty people who came in after us was served in 10. We were not offered refills for our waters and to top it off, when our food came we were told that the cooks did not spice/season the meal because 'we were not sure what your tastes were like so here is some salt and pepper' i am sorry but i love korean food and i ordered what i did because it looked delicious, i had to add a ton of salt and pepper to my soup to make it taste a bit better. They racially profiled me and told the cooks not to add spices because of my white skin in fear that i would have different tastes. They did not treat us very well at all. I grew up thinking a person is a person, i did not see skin color and this offered me perspective as well as making me NEVER want to come back here again. I eat Korean food at least 4 times a month and i love it, but they chose to assume i didnt want thier spices and such. Total crock if you ask me. I would NEVER go here if you are not Korean, you will not be served properly and you will not enjoy your experience. I have read more reviews stating the same thing than i can count on two hands. Wish i could have spent my money elsehwere

Poor service, Average Food, Pricey. The restaurant is very busy due to no competitions. The food is standard, tour group restaurant. Servers were OK, but the owner/manager was rude.

My girlfriend and I have come here many times (unfortunately because there aren't any other places to get BBQ or hot pot in the area.). Usually the service is pretty poor, but we put up with it due to the lack of other korean restaurants. Today's service was exceptionally terrible. We came in at 2:45 pm, there was one table with 2 guests, and one table in the far corner where the owners were eating lunch. We were seated upon arrival, but then we sat for almost 10 minutes with no one to take our order. We could see the server sitting at the front counter, just staring off into nothing. We raised our hands, and he smiled at us and nodded, then turned around. Another almost 10 minutes went by before one of the owners who had been watching us went to him and said something in korean, then he finally came over. He asked what we would like, and as soon as we said we would like the hot pot, he took the menus, and left quickly, he left us a tea pot and a pitcher of water, did not say anything and did not fill our glasses (and didn't ask if we had even wanted anything else to drink.)

While the food is always good, there just seems to be a rather frustrating air of "I don't care" in this restaurant. We will be returning, because we like korean food, but if we had any other choice, we would take it in a heartbeat

If you are not Korean watch out!. I just created an account specifically to write about our experience here, it was THE WORST experience ever, we did not get to try their food because they just COMPLETELY ignored us, first they told us the wait time was about 20 mins and now that I think about it I see they were trying to get rid of us, after they seated us they helped people who arrived after us (of course they were Korean and we weren't) but we still patiently waited for a very looong time. The other people were already eating & once we realized they were not even going to bring us water, we decided to leave the place because we just could not tolerate such rudeness. I have never felt like this before but from the comments below I see we were not the only ones who were discriminated. So sad.

Always eat everytime we come down. Love the hotpot. However, I wish they would continually refill sides because my husband and I enjoy it so much. Was never a fan of BBQ but tried the ribs and found them delicious. In terms of service, they're really busy here but I find the service satisfactory. Highly recommend!

Worst korean food ive ever had. The beef was tasteless and unsalted. The waiter was very vague with his service. The server doesnt seem to like that we are keeping the bbq longer to cook our meat.
Pointure
Pointure Evaluation. Seoul Korean Restaurant Evaluation:
Summary:
Seoul Korean Restaurant is a very refined and high-end business that customers can see through the quality of service provided. The food was exceptional, the décor was very well put together and warm, and the customer service was very friendly and attentive. However, the price of the food, the level of English from the waiters, and the marketing campaign are several characteristics that need improvement. From a stereotypical youth’s perspective, this restaurant is very traditional and every aspect matches the restaurant’s purpose.
Décor:
Simple, yet effective, the décor in this restaurant makes the customer feel like they just stepped into a room of their own home. However, with this cozy and warm feeling, a customer may feel that the atmosphere is a little suffocating and stuffy especially with the barbeque smoke around. The seating arrangement varies from plenty of space to being quite crowded in some areas, as it is difficult to move in and out without having to ask a person to move in. The lighting is very soft on the eyes and is very effective in contributing to the “homey” look. However, 3 lights bulbs were burnt out during the duration of our evaluation. Additionally, our table location was VERY chilly and was quite uncomfortable.
Customer Service:
Despite the atmospheric issues, the customer service is exceptional. Despite the busy hour (5:30 pm), we were seated within minutes of our entrance with a group of 5. However after sitting down, the waiters denied our request to move tables even though there were at least 5 open tables at the time. Our waiters (Joe/Joseph) were highly attentive and checked on our table 8 times without us having to call him. In addition, right as we were seated, they brought us water and tea. They also were very knowledgeable of the menu and provided recommendations based upon our group size and taste preferences. The waiters also accommodated our various food allergies with ease.
Food:
The quality of the food was quite good but the quantity of food given does not match up with the price at all. While it tasted very good, the presentation of the food was quite lacking. Our stir-fried noodle orders of 24, 25, were simply thrown on a plate and at the price we paid, we were expecting a little more presentation in it. The samgyupsal was also given to us partially frozen. While we understand that we were the ones cooking it, for charging $20.00 for the dish, the meat should at least be completely thawed out.
Payment:
After finishing our meal, the host was very understanding in our need for a split check and accommodated us with a smile. The free yogurt drink after our meal was also very nice and made us feel like we would want to come again just for the drink.
Consolidation of Online Reviews:
The general consensus of Seoul Korean Restaurant is that the food tastes great but is a bit pricey. Some reviews have also mentioned that the service was not very good because of the lack of English knowledge as well as not being attentive enough. Another review also says that the seating/clearing the table process took almost 50 minutes. Easily the worst bul-go-go I have ever had. Seemed authentic until the server came out with scissors to cut up the beef frying on the hot plate. He likely needed them to cut up the plethora of grissle on meat. Not much flavour. Cold rice. Lukewarm tea. Meh :(

Errrrrr. Even I can cook better Korean food than here

This is a hidden gem. Despite arriving at a peak time with over a hundred Korean guests in the resaurant we were immediately seated and treated to a deli cious authentic dining experience.

We admitted we didn't know what to order and were delighted with our waiters recommendations.
Keep in mind Koreans don't dawdle over their food. So the staff aren't used to providing the service you might expect- but if you can adjust your expectations you'll be rewarded with a delicious me served quickly btw their "pizza" is to die for... (it's an egg seafood delight!)

1

I dont know what happend there but if I came with my friends ( we are not korean) there was many table free and we choose one. The waiters pointed to us and in few minutes came one waiter zu us and said that they are complete reserved although it were no sings on tables. With it there were just people that saw like korean.???

Bad service!!!!!! Actually the worst service ever! Food was good but server acted like he could never see us and only paid attention of the Korean customers. Will not be back.

I for one am Korean but the food at my house is better than the food here. There is good service and nice atmosphere though.

Awesome. The food is excellent here. It is better than most of the Korean food that I've had in Calgary. Tried the bugogi, spicy seafood stew and seafood pancake. The bugogi was served with lettuce for wrapping, rice and a nice mildly spicy sauce. The seafood stew was superb. Can taste the flavor in the scallops and oysters, The pancake was a bit unusual as the top was crispy. Other versions I have had it was more like omelette, soft. I prefer crispy.

I have a suspicion that a lot of asian tourists stop here.

So it seems unlikely that one of the best Korean meals I’ve ever had is in this small community, a missed opportunity for how many years. It only makes sense that I had to visit Seoul Country Korean Restaurant for both night’s stay during the May long weekend and share it with my readers! The restaurant itself is located on the second floor of the Sundance Mall on the main street of Banff Avenue. Just be on the lookout for a crowd of people watching staff make fresh chocolate-y goodness at the Fudgery and you’ll know it’s Sundance Mall. Head into the mall entrance towards the back.
Jules
We went here for a big family lunch right after the gondola ride. This restaurant is pretty hidden if you're strolling down Banff avenue without knowing exactly where it is. It's tucked behind the same building as my favourite candy store in town, The Fudgery.

Overall, the dining experience here was great! Be warned though, afterwards you do smell like bbq!! We tried doing Korean BBQ at home before and it was too much smoke to do at home as the smoke alarms kept going off… so, if you enjoy doing that, here’s a great place to go!
