Review Sushi Bistro - Banff

Tenai Berry
Hands down one of the best sushi restaurants I've ever been to. The staff are amazing, the food is so fresh and you get a lot for your money. I would definitely recommend this restaurant 5 stars.

The shrimp tempura sushi rolls tasted like the shrimp been made the day before as it was dry and chewy (see picture). The shrimp tempura was incredibly greasy. Spring rolls bland. And to top it off we were given one less piece each in our sashimi orders of 5.

One of the best sushi restoran. Everything what we ordered was fresh and delicious! Server was nice, order came quickly, definitely will come again. 🙂

Amazing spot, great fresh fish and good size. Service was lovely, would recommend for sushi lovers. Open later too, until 9:30. Great for a full meal or small snack. Pair with the warm sake!

Best sushi experience in banff friendly server, quick and delicious. I will definitely come back next visit.

One of the best sushi I've ever had. Really friendly staff and good prices!
Kat Eleanor
The food here is really good, and reasonably priced. Service was a little slow, but not too unreasonable with how busy it was.

I called this place making a $160 order thinking they were in Calgary. After walking into the wrong sushi place here in Calgary, I realized I made the order in banff The place I went to here in Calgary suggested calling them and paying a fee given it’s not fair. I called and the lady who helped me laughed and said it happens all the time and that it’s ok I then offered to pay $20 and she put me on hold to asked the manager. She returned to the call and said that it’s ok Will definitely go when in banff Professional business make professional food!

Really terrible!!!! Especial the waitress service, and the food is not fresh. The worst sushi I eat. I will never come again. Avoid this place.
TLDR: one of my favs, must try for Banff

This sushi restaurant has a very special place in my heart. Everything here is so good and fresh, service is very friendly. My favorite is the giant scallop roll!
Preferred this place for lunch during my visit to the lovely town Banff. This outlet is located near Banff avenue, next to Banff tea company. Ambience was pretty decent. The service was lovely 😊.
We ordered Raman noodles, salmon fish, crab roll, sushi rice 🍣 and octopus 🐙!!!
Well this is the first am rendering my taste buds with very much scantily cooked sea food!! Indeed tried sushi bistro to get into this and I loved.. the octopus 🐙 was the scene stealer!! It was pretty much raw and were laced with chilli sauce and ginger!!! It was fleshy and tasty 😋
Salmon fish was ok, crab roll 🦀 was good. Raman noodles was perfectly blended with spices and the soupy texture gave the exact lilt!!
When you are heading to Banff, don’t miss to try sushi bistro!!!

Food was horrible. If you love sashimi, AVOID THIS PLACE! It tasted like the sashimi was hoarded in the fridge. Not fresh.

Gyoza was overcooked, the wrapper was solid crunchy???

The rolls and tempura were at par. And the teriyaki yellowtail was ok.

Service was nice.

Sushi was great, service was extremely friendly. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone. The prices are also fantastic, we had 3 kinds of sushi, and an appetizer for $21. You can't go wrong.

I'm surprised at the negative reviews. My daughter and I went here for lunch, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The sushi was fresh and yam tempura was very tasty. The sushi was NOT huge and heavy- which is good. Finally, fresh bite-sized pieces. The spicy tuna was done the way it should be - without being slathered with sriracha mayo, just sriracha. Much better that way. The service was great and very quick/polite. I'm sorry to see the negative reviews, as we thought it was great.

There's not a lot of choices for sushi on main street Banff. For a quick affordable meal, Sushi Bistro is fine. We spent about $40 for four people.

However I can't say the quality is there. The batter for the tempura was a bit thin and hard. And the rice used for the sushi rolls broke apart quite easily. We had many pieces sitting on our plate at the end.

Not a place I'd choose to go to over the other options in the area.

If I have time while visiting Banff alone this is the place I head to for a quick meal. The sushi is not the best I've had but it's still pretty good and well priced. The location is cozy and the service is always very friendly.

Bad Service. It wasn't busy when I got there (dinner time past 7:30) and maybe because there were only two people serving but their service was slow. We had to be waited to be served and we were completely ignored for at least 3 mins when we entered (not even acknowledged or told to wait a moment).

Not good. Was not a fan at all!!!
Did not taste fresh and was poorly made.
Agedashi Tofu was served in a miso type broth (not the norm) & barely fried. More like reheated.
Takoyaki was off and too much mayo sauce. Kamizake roll was bland. I like trying new rolls but this wasnt great. 2/5
Service was slooooow. 2/5

Rolls. Good sushi for a good price. Fast and friendly service!

Expensive and poor quality. This place has no idea how to roll a piece of sushi and with their expensive prices in comparison to an average sushi place I am very disappointed would not return!

Affordable Sushi & Entrees, Sub-par Service, but quality of food is there. Sushi Bistro is a little hard to find with its lighting interior, and it being tucked away between Bear Street and Banff Avenue (but is located on Caribou Street, near Touloulou’s & Banff Tea Company). The quality of the sushi is good, and the sashimi is at a great price of 5 pieces for $6. Husband and I also recommend their Sake Bomb drink variations (we had the Ninja, and I had the Snow) for the delicious and pleasing notes to the tongue (these are $6 a glass). The service is not the best, but it is decent and certainly not the worst in Banff. Their food looked affordable too. FYI: If you want to give Sushi Bistro a try, when first going through the entrance, walk further into the restaurant – it’s hard to see any customers near the entrance because of the way the restaurant is spaced, so this will ensure you get seated right away and don’t have to wait!

Very poor service!! Waited at entrance while wait staff failed to acknowledge our presence, order taking was done without the exchange of any words from waitress, therefore drink order was not offered, waited for bill for so long we just stood up (right in front of them) and started to put on our coats & they just looked at us. I wonder if they would have been pleased if we had waived to them & left without paying. But here is the twist...... Food was great, fresh and interesting!!! Loved the miso soup, wasabi tempura shrimp ect.

Sushi bistro came highly suggested by our hotel, so we plain and simply decided to go. This is where the story gets interesting. We arrived at 630pm our first night and placed a large order for assorted rolls and tempura, two other tables where seated after we arrived and ordered after we did. We did not receive our food on this visit after a 45 minute wait in which both tables seated after had ordered, received food and finished. We approached our server who seemed confused but the language barrier didn't seem to give us a answer as to why our food never came. We left both very disturbed by what just occurred. After thinking it through we thought we would give it a second chance the next day, we did not see the same server again and it appeared she was not working that day. We ordered the same items and we had no issue and the food arrived quickly and was good! We would return again, and will be very aware of our service on the next visit. Sometimes second chances are worth it. Just be sure your order has been placed and isn't taking 45 minutes to arrive. All in all, not bad and decent sushi.

Very fresh, n the price is so cheap

Overall good.. Smaller portions, reasonably priced. Excellent quality. Service was good, even on a busy night. Will return.

Been waiting for 15 mins and more at the entrance. Poor service! My presence has been absolutely ignored!

Sushi. Some of the better sushi in town and at a great price,. We went in for an early dinner and the restaurant had maybe 2 tables of people, the service was terrible, very slow, the waitresses were to busy talking to each other and not checking tables, we had to get up and go over to them to ask for the bill.
Jon_w_holmes
Forget those Korean/Canadian all you can eat sushi joints, this is the real deal! I had the best sashimi outside of Maui, absolutely a must try

This is the second and last time I will be dining at this establishment. First time was good but I'm not too sure what happened this time round. Service was ridiculously slow for an empty restaurant and the fish was grey - no exaggeration it was disgusting. Move on - there are better sushi restaurants in town.

It was great! Quick service and extremely friendly. We had two rolls, an appetizer and green tea for under 16$. Was a perfect lunch.

Blah. Waited 30 minutes for bland, just ok sushi. Rice in rolls and nigiri tasted like cardboard. Fish was ok but neither fresh nor flavourful. What's up Banff???
Marc LeBlanc
Wow! Great service, great and fresh sushi. Best sushi I've had outside Japan.
Foodie
Food out of a box from the supermarket. Not sure what's happened to this joint in 6 months but it's gone from ok to the worst Japanese I've ever had. And poor service to go with it.
Justine Parks
Good...but not the best. Outstanding service, rolls are much cheaper than calgary, the rolls were big. Taste didnt come up to par compared to some places ive had in calgary. lots of areas of improvements

WORST service ever!!!!. This restaurant has the worst servers ever!!!! I was there waited for 10 mins to be seated, one of the Japanese server came out and cursed me out of the restaurant. It seems like they don't care to have customers to eat there. I would rather to spend my money to somewhere else.
TMS
Not bad. Amazed at how fast thy made it! Sashimi was meh... Little warm - but try the Spicy Scallop roll. Teas surprisingly good. Basically a good roll joint, cheap(ish), but can compare to the big city Sashimi.
Susanne
Worst service ever. Walked out before we ordered. If you feel like being abused by your evil aunt who swears at you in Japanese, give it a try!
Greg Ley
Met my expectations. For being in the Canadian Rockies, it really was quite good. The service was exceptional, the food was good (rolls were made well, rice was flavorful and cooked correctly, and sashimi tasted fresh (though the pieces were small)), and the prices are great considering the town. I've had better sushi, sure, but this was a great deal and we left happy.

Best sushi in Banff!. Amazing sushi, and cheap too! Service is always wonderful!

Good food, atmosphere, and service. Their menu is simple and straight-forward --- a good selection of appetizers, a lot of standard fare for nigiri and maki, and a few "jumbo rolls" as well.

The fish was reasonably fresh and the sushi was overall quite good for the price. The jumbo rolls were unfortunately packed with a lot of rice to create more volume -- I would just opt for the regular maki only next time.

The takoyaki was delicious and definitely a worthwhile appetizer to order if you are visiting.

Service is attentive and food arrived at our table reasonably fast. The restaurant has a casual atmosphere and we did not have to wait at all to be seated (arriving on a Sunday around 1:30pm).

I would definitely visit this restaurant again!

Good. We arrived at 2:30 in the afternoon after hiking Johnston Canyon. We were rather hungry. The service was quick, attentive and the food was very good. We did have a Japanese server. The portions seemed to be on the small side but they were tasty.
Foodie
Excellent sushi and wonderful service at fair prices. The tacoyaki was the favorite of all of us. Spicy tuna roll , spicy salmon roll, salmon and avocado roll, octopus sushi and BBQ eel sushi were inhaled quickly also. Highly recommended

Worst in town! Serving sizes are small, quality of food is very poor, service is always slow with multiple mistakes. I have been four times and each time it gets worse. Never again.

Average - but with some above-average choices. Sushi Bistro is an odd restaurant for one that is owned by Japanese : the sushi just isn't very good. It's fine, but passable fine - and it doesn't compare to even their _own_ sushi from a year back.

Also, the service is hit-and-miss - unforgivable, to be honest, in a Japanese-owned place. The problem lies with the Chinese-Canadian staff they have working there, one girl of whom is obnoxiously chatty, fake, and annoying when she isn't inattentive and abrasive.

The Japanese wait staff deserve to be distinguished here - one waitress, Hiroko, in particular is kind and very attentive. (I think she works Sundays. Ask for her if you can. say this because if you get her rather than the Chinese girl, your experience here will be better.)

With that said, the place does have excellent non-sushi fare. The teriyaki salmon is a clicheed 'fusion' dish, yes, but ask for it with miso and with the salmon atop a bowl of rice, and you will really enjoy it - it's done eally well.

And most of all, the Banana Tempura at this place is really nice, almost as good as Sushi Zipang's. It comes with a dollop of whipped cream and ice cream and is the best dessert in Banff, I think.

Prices are reasonable and the sushi is infinitesimally better than the horrible, horrible food and service at Sushi House Banff. As far as price, service, and quality as a balance go, this is the best place on the whole in Banff for Japanese.

Do check it out, but don't rely solely on the sushi, and get yourself a Japanese server.

Wow. What a surprise. Amazing service great food and great prices. You get 6 pieces in a roll order. Nice to see two extra pieces for the same price as Calgary. My lunch was amazing, I will be back for an evening meal.

Jay must have had a bad night because my meal there was really great! Service great. Food great. Good prices too. Go there!

One of the worst experience in Japanese restaurant food being bad is understandable, I wasn't expecting best sushi in banff anyway however servers were very unprofessional and tacky I love to describe detailed experince in here then I wouldn't know where to start it is such a shame people like that are in service industry I have utmost respect for Japanese people and their service oriented mind however none of the person working at this place had any professionalism and interest toward their clients restaurant like this should not exist anywhere it's up to u to decide but I wouldn't go near this place if u don't want to ruin ur banff experience

A+ Customer Service. Sushi is pretty good here. Not the best i have ever had by any means, but still a great spot to have sushi. What really made me have a great overall experience, is the servers attentive customer service. Mind you, it wasn't very busy, but we were taken care of from start to finish.

Definitely would recommend this place!

The salmon & avocado rolls were tasty, as was the spicy tuna. The kamikaze roll had crunchy bits of tempura with spicy mayo and avocado - it was okay, but I probably wouldn't order that one again.
Happy Sushi Belly
I found that the flavor of all three of my pieces was good, but...the pieces were fairly small.

We started with Deep Fried Chicken which came out in a little plate. The chicken was delicious and juicy and fried really nicely, not greasy. Then, we got in a little bowl, which we thought was strange, our Salmon Sashimi , the fish was really fresh and the portions was quite generous, especially for the price ($6 for 5 pieces). We had an assortment of sushi’s that we like so we ordered some Surf Clams, Inari and spicy tuna roll. All the sushi was delicious and fresh and tasted really good! Our last item we ordered was on their menu under Ramen Noodle and it turned out to be a big bowl of ramen! It was delicious and i
